Private or public schools, all for one, one for all; simple in description, complex in analysis

| | Comments (10) |

It's only a proposal, at least for now, but the CIF Southern Section reportedly is being asked to separate private schools from public schools in the playoffs for all team sports.
The two major issues appear to be the funding and how its obtained on which high schools operate, and the public schools' resentment for the private schools' opportunities to recruit.

How about it?
Should the CIF-SS split its playoffs into private and public divisions?
If yes, why? And if no, why not?
Briefly, please, briefly.

I think that they should separate the schools because it is onlygoing to make the sports better because now it will give public schools a chance to be more competitive.

Well, the only local threat is St. Paul. Maybe CIF should look at recruiting. Santa Fe HS is the loser at this one. SP takes players away from SF without thinking twice and that’s in all sports.
Probably nothing will ever be done about limitless boundaries when it comes to the big school. Is SP a big school? Not in enrollment, but in the ability to recruit any where they what….

I am torn on this issue. Yes, in football the Privates have the edge but I am not sure about all other sports. In girls soccer for example, you have top team that are Public for example Esperanza, Canyon, Brea Olinda, Pacifica, Troy, La Serna, Santa Ana Valley. All top teams in thier respective divisions. This is just one sport where I think the Publics dominate over the Privates. But then again when people talk about sports in So Cal. its Football and Basketball that get all the talk.

To say that public schools don't recruit is a naive person. Take a good look at the rosters of some of the local schools and you'll see kids that don't live in the district, maybe on paper. Heck how do kids that live in the City of Commerce end up at one the local schools and have helped them win two cif titles.

This debate has been going on for decades. Is it fair, probably not.By seperating the schools all you do is create an elitist society. St. Paul would not of won the Pac 5 this year, And Gahr never would of been in the final either. Enrollment is key. If Bosco moved into the same League with St.Paul they would probably fair much better, but they stay where they are because they want to be the best even if it will never happen. You can't seperate the 2. That would be far worse.

This is a non issue. We are crying over the success of a hand full of Private Schools. I think it’s great to see Programs like Orange Lutheran come from the bottom to a power house sports program. To achieve this status is not easy. It takes commitment from the parents, students and administration. Remember this is being done without government money. With that being said now lets look at the power house public schools. Mission Viejo, Hart(NewHall), Edison, Long Beach Poly, Carson, Canyon, Corona Centenial,Los Alamitos and I will throw in the premier public school in the area La Habra. I can Guarantee one thing that all these schools have in common is a very active booster program. I do send my children to public school and I am proud that my son plays for Coach Arnold at Cal Hi. Most importantly I am very proud of my son for maintaining a 3.5 GPA while taking 4 Honors classes. This is what is important to me. There is absolutely no need to have separate playoffs for private schools.

I can guarantee this...if the CIF does separate the publics and privates the public divisions will turn into the city section and th eprivates will become even stronger. They will get all the talented kids in order to compete with each other. That would be great....

No. Because every high school recruits. They say they don't, but they really do. So saying it's not an even playing field doesn't hold true. Plus, everybody has an opportunity to go to a good Private School, but not everybody has an opportunity to go to a good Public School.

Plain and simple, if private schools want to be part of CIF then they should be held accountable the same rules that apply to public school. If not, then GET OUT!!!!
