As the season is heading into the final weeks, here is the WDN Volleyball Top 5.

1. La Serna (9-3, 7-0)

The Lancers are just head and shoulders above everyone else in the area. Senior Kyle Smith dropped 24 kills on Cal-Hi on Wednesday. Could clinch a share of the Del Rio League title Friday with a win over 3-time champion El Rancho. A win over Santa Fe next Wednesday gives the Lancers the title outright

2. Santa Fe (11-6, 5-2)

Chiefs are a solid No. 2 in the Del Rio League after sweeping El Rancho in three on Wednesday. Santa Fe faces Pioneer on Friday and then hosts La Serna in a huge match Wednesday.

3. Cantwell-Sacred Heart (14-2, 6-1)

While the Cardinals travel to St. Paul tonight at 6:30, they know their big game is next Tuesday on the road at St. Monica. A win would would put them in a position to share the Camino Real League title.

4. California (10-10, 3-4)

Coach Jennifer Eastlake knows the talent is there, but the Condors are just too inconsistent and sloppy at times. While their five-game loss to La Serna Wednesday is evidence of their ability, their loss to Santa Fe last Friday shows that they need work.

5. Whittier (5-5, 3-4)

This was a team talking about a league championship during the preseason. But Whittier has suffered some tough losses at home, including a five-game defeat to El Rancho last week. Next Wednesday's game against Dons might determine who gets the DRL's final guaranteed spot. Big game Friday against Cal-Hi.

On the bubble:

El Rancho (5-12, 3-4)

La Serna hasn't been mentioned enough for this fan. Last year they went to CIF quarter finals and not much was written about it. This year they are looking to be league champs and are undeafted and still no article about La Serna and their players since early April. I agree with the one fan about seeing this sport get recognized with an all league team just like all the other sports.

i remember it being an amazing season and hardly any of the schools were mentioned for volleyball. You people concentrait sooooo much on other sports, volleyball such a great game. Take the La Serna vs Cal High game last week. One of the most amazing come backs ever and it was never mentioned. What about the Cal High vs El rancho game. No one ever mentioned the 51 assists or the 22 kills that happened in that game. Lets see one of you guys do that. Anyways you guys really should consider going to a volleyball game more often

I hope there will be space in the prep sports section to feature the 1st and 2nd All League/Area Boys Volleyball team names with pictures just like all the other sports. Last season there wasn't even a writeup or mention of the all league honorees. Give the guys their well-deserved recognition for their high achievement in the underestimated demanding sport. Thanks.

Kyle Smith is a great player but how about mentioning some of the other players in this league. Last Friday Darius C. from Cal High got 22 kills and Keith Smith from Cal High got 51 assists. I am sure there are other great players from all the other teams who deserve to get noticed. Cal high although inconsistent and losing some key matches in the 5th game are a very young team. The middles are juniors, the setter a sophmore and really will be strong next year. How about noting some other players then just Kyle Smith from La Serna.

Thanks!
