Santa Fe's Geren opts for family over coaching
No surprise here.
His wife Veronica is with child and due to deliver within a very short time, and Santa Fe basketball coach Mike Geren was faced with a dilema.
Continue coaching and miss valuable time with their first child, or give up coaching and be home with his son.
A no brainer.
Geren resigned and the school is looking for a replacement. The search has been narrowed to a half dozen candidates and athletic director Steve Hendry says he hopes to fill the position within the next two to three weeks.
Geren's coaching record was under .500 (117-166), but he leaves on a high note after back-to-back Del Rio League championships in 2007 and 2008, sharing the latter with California.
Geren said he was leaving the door open for a possible return to coaching, but definitely not for a while, and not in any form..
And then again, perhaps not at all.
Geren is the best coach a player can have. He teaches much more than basketball. He makes his players become better people as well as better basketball players.
Mike Geran is as classic of a coach as you can get.
Watching Mike Lowe set the bar as coaching as ethics go. Mike (Geren) set his goal to be like Mike (Lowe). He wins with class and can lose games with class. And that is hard to say about some to say about some Del Rio league coaches.
Mike Geren, you will be missed. But Del Rio watch out the LOWE is back.
