Okay, if you say so, but...
can you give just a little credit to the current and past high school coaches...Manzo, Gonzales, George,
Lopez...?

You MISSED the point!...Go back to "There was no development"...FACT:All the years of development & preparation took place prior to entering LSHS,(or any HS) on the other teams these players were on, PONY,LL & TRAVEL TEAMS. With the latter providing a much more consistent, higher level of competition(coaching in some cases)than even HS ball.

As far as the del rio league, BASEBALL SEASON is over. FOOTBALL SEASON is here, like it always has been. Welcome back football fans its time to let everybody know whats going on in the football world.

Del Rio League alumni, Langstaff was a sophomore last year and started most of the games at first and hit 6th/7th most games. Nathan Garcia also played a bit, but spent most time on JV. Next year's team should do very well.

Your point is right on, along with Insight, that coaches Gonzo and George have developed all of the players- the returners and the new guys. All are better as a result of the practices and disciplined atmosphere up at LS now. Good luck to the guys in eth game today.

That's exactly the point. Manzo was their previous coach. So give him some props in moving the program in the right direction...also give some credit to the other 'previous' coaches (some of whom are still in the program).

After all, wasn't Manzo Coach of the Year two years
ago?

LH,

we're not talking football because it's still BASEBALL season. have a clue!!!

Del Rio League Alumni said:

Insight,
Your completely right about the coaching situation at LS. N on E mus is really misinformed about that whole thing. Manzo did not develop these players, Gonzo did. Many of these players contributing are players Manzo did not play last year or kept down on JV because he felt they werent ready. There are 4 current players at LS that were starters or part time starters last year. Montoya, Burke, Soto, and Sanchez.

hey mr. murray..i keep reading your blog and wonder what makes you think la mirada is part of whittier ? If so why are you excluding norwalk high schools? they are closer than La Habra and in the same district and division as La Mirada. It makes no sense ..provise me an answer please.. thanks

It's all about the circulation area of the paper. Why talk about Norwalk teams if no one in Norwalk buys the paper? The area La Mirada High sits is in the circulation area.

How many times does Murray have to explain it????????????

Hey ElRancho: Now that Villalobos and Vargas graduate, who on the hill is going to beat a Lancer team with Burke, Montoya, Langstaff, Sanchez, Garcia and DeCorte returning? Could be a blowout next year like it was when the 09's were freshmen.

Have you ever heard "in order to be the best you have to beat the best"?...It's a common known concept in life. It also translates well in sports.

Teams need to get out of their comfort zone, and challenge the players mettle. They will become more accustomed to overcoming adversity, thus making them stronger.

Wouldn't you agree this approach can improve a good team, helping them become a great team?

Both LS & Cal are the only DR teams to play outside the Zone. Cal went to LV to play in Bishop Gormans Tourney and did well against some every strong teams. LS chose to play D1 Los Al & Arlington, plus other top ranked teams and did well. How are they doing so far in CIF?

Success is where Preparation and opportunity meet.

By the way, I also make an insane chicken salad...Bon Appetit

The team had plenty of raw talent in'06,and won the games they did based on that. Unfortunately there was no "development" or substantive direction or game plan or enthusiasm (synergy)etc.etc. If there had been LS would have at least made it to CIF last year ( 4th place last year not 2nd) It's also unfortunate you decided to mention the coaches removal. I'm sure it would have been fine letting it go, but since YOU brought it up....All the aforementioned aspects of coaching were only a few of the reasons (too many to mention) for the need of a new coaching staff. The move has proved to be the right one. LS Baseball is back on track to being a dominant force in Del Rio and CIF-SS. It's also very clear that the parents and previous coaches of these players were responsible for their development, and want to continue to provide them with the best opportunity to excel in their sport.....Mystery Solved

It doesnt matter who you play in the preseason you have to have the horses to be able to compete and win. Obviously La Serna and Cal have good baseball players and thats why they are winning. You tell me that if you play in a tough pre season tournament that you are going to be successful you are kidding yourself. Remember you cant make chicken salad out of chicken *&@8

I told you people all along that La Serna was the team to beat they are on a roll and they are bringing back the Lancer pride of the late 80's. I hope all of you doubters think twice before talking crap about those Lancers. We are going to come up victorious again to move on to the semis. See you folks at Dodger Stadium

People really need to lay off the Crespi gave LS the game wagon. Crespi did have errors but LS stayed in that game the entire time. They kept chipping away and it paid off for them.

Luck may have been part of it, but i wouldnt mind being lucky and continuing on in CIF. El Rancho and other teams would love to have some luck. La Serna is the team that has it on their side, mix that in with talent and heart, its a dangerous combo.

N on E mus said:

Congrats to La Serna's boys baseball team (and also to the girl's softball team) for moving on.

Wow, Coach Manzo must be real proud at their accomplishments. He won league and Coach of the Year two years ago. Last year, he came in second place in league with basically this same group of players...developed them as sophs and juniors... Then, he got fired! It was a mystery!

elrancho said:

Ya we shall do well in the montebello tournament, it will prepare us to beat LS again for league.

Del Rio League Fan said:

After reading the WDN you only learned how Crespi lost the game. Let me tell you how La Serna won the game.
- Victor Soto threw six gutsy innings and went 2 for2
- The LS defense played flawless, Sanchez played great at shortstop
-Estrada laid down two perfect sacrifce bunts that led to 2 runs
-Montoya throws out 2 runners and his hustle played to wins the game scoring on Burke's grounder to score the winning run
-Ben Burke goes 3-4 with 3 RBI's and tied the game with a two out base hit off Crespi's 20-0 pitcher in the bottum of the fifth to make it 5-5. Did Crespi make some errors-yeah, but no way does that SS turn two with Burke running and Connor Burke scores easily. Crespi made some mistakes but LS WON the game. Crespi is the team who was overrated. I guess Delriohb was right, playing a tougher schedule does pay off in the playoffs. Ask Cal high or LS. Good luck to both teams,as well as St Paul. By the way, good luck to El Rancho and Santa Fe in the Montelbello tournament next year. Cal and LS will be playing teams who will get them better.

Leprechaun said:

Hey Lucky,

Was it luck that kept La Serna within striking distance?????? If you allow a good team to hang around chances are it will bite you in the rear no matter what the sport is!!!!

delrioHB said:

Hey Lucky- are you saying that 20 wins are lucky? How about he sweep of a good Cal team; was that lucky? Branch Ricky said "Luck is the residue of design"--and these kids have put themselves in position to take advantage whan a team makes mistakes.

In both CIF games, LS hit (10 vs Montebello and 7 vs Crespi) and played good defense. They BEAT, OUTPLAYED and OUT-PITCHED both teams. They have a team BA over .300, a team ERA under 3.00 and a team fielding % over .950. Good teams play D when it counts. Obviously you are/were not a true ballplayer, or you would have known that and wouldn't have made the stupid, disrespectful comments you did. Only a pathetic loser like you would look for a way to knock a group of kids in the way you did after knocking off a nationally ranked team. Nice class.

Another La Serna hater- what a surprise. In reality, we paid off Montebello and Crespi- we gave them $1,000,000 each. I got the cash out of may change basket.

of this blog, its one of the biggest days in high school baseball and you havent posted anything about yesterdays games. Get on top of it the guy in the SGV Tribune has his stuff posted first thing in the morning to get everyone going.

Wow! That L on the lancers hat must stand for LUCKY!! Do they have at least one earned run in the playoffs yet?? Can anyone say OVERATED!!!! Crespi was finally exposed. No way the lancers make it another round. Stop dreaming LS fans. I dont care what their record is against the teams that are left. They're done. No way a team in the third round will hand them a game like their first TWO.

Del Rio League Alumni said:

Congrats to La Serna on the upset of top ranked Crespi. Everyone can say that Crespi handed La Serna the game, and that can be the case with 4 errors and botching the potential game ending double play, BUT mistakes are what teams need sometimes to win a ball game. Thats baseball for you. Even when down 3 runs, LS stayed poised through the game, and it paid off for them in the end.

Good luck in the next round against South Hills, will be another battle.

Also Congrats to Cal on their victory of La Quinta. Im glad to see LS and CAL both representing the league well, maybe we can have a DRL final? That would a sight to see.

For the record, La Serna had 6 hits. Cespi had 8. Crespi's pitchers, the best the Lancers have seen this year, had a little something to do with only 6 hits. La Serna continues to play good D, taking advantage of other teams' mistakes. That's what good teams do. The team has heart and competes for every at bat and out.

An intersting note: of the 8 teams remaining in D3, LS has a 5-0 record against them (3 over Cal, and wins over Paloma Valley and Elsinore). This could be the year for DRL to make it to the big game. Good luck to our great DRL representatives.

Not sure what player you are referring to off Santa Fe’s JV team that’s been kicked off but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit. For some reason a few of the younger varsity coaches over at SF think they are bigger then the program. One in particular actually wouldn’t even put any time or effort into a 6’-6” 340lb kid as a sophomore or junior but rather waited until his senior year to try and develop him. Trust me when I say all his development came from his own hard work and a JV lineman coach that was will to work overtime with the kid. Then last year this same coach bumps heads with a 6’-4” 300 plus kid and when the kid can’t take it anymore he finally goes off on the coach so he’s dropped to the JV team for his entire junior season. Early in preseason a starting tackle breaks his leg and yet this kid remained on JV. Trust me when I say when things started going south for SF’s season this kid could have been a huge help if it wasn’t for said coach and his soberness.

Here is some football news, that I have heard.
1. Santa Fe kicks off best player from last years jv team, after he gets into it with one of the coaches. Player is told to come back next year.
2. Pioneer has 130 boys sign up for football, but only 50 show up for practice.
3. El Rancho had about 120 boys out at practice. and about 11 coaches.
4.Cal hi there numbers are down from last year. and they have pick-up a # of coaches from last years ER team.
Murray, now get on your mule and ride.
