Nine local baseballers receive recognition ...
It formerly was called All-CIF Southern Section Baseball teams.
Now, it's the 2008 All-Southern Section Baseball Teams compiled by
the California Baseball Coaches Association.
Tomatoes, tamahtoes, no big deal, although some of us wish the CIF
was still involved.
Nine area athletes have been acknowledged:
In Division III, California senior pitcher Tyler Leibert, La Serna
senior pitcher/outfielder Victor Soto and El Rancho senior pitcher Chris Villalobos were first team selections.
Named to the second team was El Rancho senior first baseman Aaron
Flores.
In Division IV, La Habra senior second baseman Bryan Aanderud was a second team pick. He also was a first team pick as a member of the
Highlanders' CIF championship team.
Division V honorees were St. Paul sophomore shortstop Andrew Chico and sophomore pitcher/outfielder Gabriel Encinas on the first team, and Cantwell senior shortstop Antonio Andrade and St. Paul junior catcher Chris Carrillo on the second team.
Did the committee miss anyone who deserved (legitimate) recognition?
NOTE: We're still rounding up the softball and boys volleyball
selections.

WILL THERE BE A MENTION OF ALL C.I.F PLAYERS ?
Al:
You must be the same guy who predicted that CantDoWell would blow SP out in football as well. As I remember it, it was 35-0 when we started putting in 3rd and 4th stringers in the 3rd quarter in order for us to keep the score down.
I admire your support of CantDoWell. You are true fa, although a bit myopic.
We can argue this baseball thing all year but when SP is crowned CIF champs next year in baseball I will have one word for you.........SCOREBOARD!
Wait until next year. Your team is going to be behind us and BA. Guarantee! This isn't football where you get all kinds of recruits. You are just one team that got a lucky run. Well, your luck runs out when you have to face Cantwell.
Bottom line...Enough Said...move on with you life...Cantwell's Baseball program is top notch. LIVE WITH IT. Jealousy will get you nowhere.
Al:
Before you go popping off about cup cake schedules you might want to take another look at SP's and BA's schedule. They might be in a D5 league but they don't play a D5 schedule unlike the one Cantwell does.
Besides it is CIF who decides what level a league is.
Is Cantwell up to the challenge in playing in the Del Rey, where 3 of the 4 finalists came from? Or is Cantwell going to be another St. Monica that the upper echelon teams can take batting practice against? I think the later applies.
Al, your ignorance is showing....again.
WOW AL,
ST.PAUL DID MOVE UP A DIVISION JUST LIKE U GUYS DID.BUT I GUESS IF CANTWELL IS A CUPCAKE SKOOL?I HOPE YOU KNOW AMAT AND ST PAUL PLAY AT A WHOLE OTHER LEVEL. BEFORE POSTING RANDOM FACTS GET THEM STRAIGHT PLEASE.
Don't worry St. Paul HS, Cantwell is part of the Del Rey League now. We did step it up, but why didn't St. Paul or Bishop move up. Oh they want to keep playing cup cake schools right?
u should have to be able to win and perform well in the playoffs to get all cif recognition that is the only way
Easy, Jovany Avila from WHS.
He is an Offensive and Defensive machine. He batted .354 in 68 at-bats. His OBP was .463. His SLG% was .554. He got walked 11 times compared to only 3 K's. He is also Clutch and is not scared of having the most important at-bat of the game. Defensively he can throw runners at any time during the game. The most feared catcher in the DEL RIO League to run on. Also, he ended his HS career like the player he is with a 4-4 performance. And he is the type of player that improves his performance anytime he is surrounded by talent. He loves the competition between himself and his teammates and best of all he's nonchalant about it. He's a great player and one who deserved Recognition. His brother, should also be recognized sometime in the near future too.
Unless there has been a recent change, All-CIF does NOT mean that a player had to have participated in the playoffs. It just usually works that way because the best players take their teams to the playoffs. The league representative nominates players from the league for the award, with the help of the coaches and the all-league selections. I know there was an issue with the All-CIF awards - was the CIF office ever able to get someone else to take that responsibility?
Dear al,
All cif is based on playoff performance and what their opposing and their own coach's see. And as far as i am concerned you better understand these players roles. Chico a lead off hitter who scores and scores and scores. Encinas a pitcher who keeps his team in the game everytime he steps on the mound, which is his strong point. His hitting simply a bonus. Carrillo is a catcher who can change the game from behind the plate. Allowing only 5 stolen bases all year out of about 20 or 30. and being a contibutor in his hitting. All 3 especially contributing in thre playoffs where they led their team to the cif finals. All 3 will be returning next year.unfortunatley for you cantwell got the pat on the back. its reality.dont critisize players you have never seen and who play 110% all the time.
what a joke is right Al, Serra 1-18, Bosco Tech 9-15, St Bernard 9-15, Cathedral 10-11, and lets not forget Cant Well 13-14, wow what a joke camino Real league, how sad is it that the 2 boys you mentioned had a better batting average then your winning percentage, and looking at your schedule, looks to me like the entire St Paul roster might have batted over 600 playing the cup cakes Cant Well faced all year maybe that is why you did not make it past the wild card game, so please dont discredit the accomplishments of the St Paul boys, Chico batted very well all season and played a good shortstop, Encinas also held his own batting and pitched in a lot of big games, and Carrillo was second on the team in RBI's and lead the team in homeruns as well as there is no better catcher in the league or divison and in the area, just a reminder they were in the CIF Div.5 final and in case you did not know 3 of the final 4 in the Semi Finals were from the Del Rey league, come out and watch next year Al as i believe Cant Well will be joining Bisop Amat, St Paul, and Bishop Montgomery, looks to me that Cant Well will be needing the luck
I agree with Al. We should look at individual stats not what the team accomplished if we are choosing All Area / All first team. Give the boys credit where credit is do. Santa Fe had a not so good season but there is one player in that team that should get recognition (Fuentes #12) lead the league in:
Batting Ave: .487
HR Tied with 5
SLG: .833
RBI: 39
OB Pct: .529
he also pitched well enough to get five victories.
Roger when will you post All Area and All First teams in the Whittier Daily News?
AL's comment; those are pretty impressive stats. Are these guys seniors? If not, we will be looking forward to next season at CANTWELL. Maybe you could post their status for next season.
hey those boys of yours from cantwell better bring there game next yr. then cuz they got st.paul to deal wit now n if yo boys dont do it next yr. then they still dont diserve anythin!
those three st.paul players r some of the best athletes out here! n they'll prove it to you guys again next yr.! so bring your A game cuz they're comin for u whoever u r cantwell!
n by the way cantwell is a joke of a school!
Congratulations to all the above baseball players. Honorable mention to Francisco Fuentes pitcher/outfielder for having a good offensive session. See you next year.
who is el rancho? o ya thats the team that gets knocked out every year in the first round. how can u be that good if u cant even beat wild card teams as a seeded team. looks like llanes needs to find a better tournaments than the montebello and st. paul tourney to play in. and even when they did play good teams like simi valley and servite they got killed. what a team
Yo, ER DON: Absolutely!
Who deserve legitimate recognition (RAY MADRID,EL RANCHO) The senior was very valuable to he’s team winning - LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP, He has Talent / talent / talent! Outstanding outfielder, very good speed and a strong arm.
Tell me if this isn't a joke to you.
Montebello Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary
Antonio Andrade (Camino Real League MVP)
Avg: .542 Hr: 8 OBP: .625
Ralf Weissenberger
Avg: .488 Hr: 5 OBP: .530

Gabriel Encinas
Avg: .340 HR: 2 OBP .425
Chris Carillo

What a joke!
Antonio and Ralf should be 1st team, and those boys from St. Paul should get a pat on the back better luck next year.
