idk Tyler Leibert has got to be pretty decent leading his team to 2 quarterfinal appearances in a row and a 1.8 ERA both years also a 2 time all-cif player and 2 time del rio league pitcher of the year. only player to get each award twice in cal history and we all know about the great pitchers that came out of cal. every loss he had this year was was by 1 or 2 runs. could
have gone either way. but victor and chris are great pitchers have to give it up for sure
Santa Fe Parent: You are absolutely correct. Ariel Mendez, Santa Fe's fine junior catcher, was inadvertently omitted from the All-Del Rio League softball first team list. She is a first-team selection. My error. And my apologies to her.
We havent heard anything about Coach of the Year, who is it going to be Roger?
Congratulations to Ariel Mendez (Santa Fe HS) for making 1st Team. Her name was left off.
yes it should have only been villalobos for mvp if la serna would of finished first than ok but they could not finish the big game again
Girls Softball.... Sorry baseball fellas ..... congrats to all boys and girls selection .... but after watching some of the girls games there are 2 noteable selections that should have recieved a vote somewhere on this list and those 2 players are catchers Ariel Mendez (Santa Fe H.S.) and Alysha Atwater (Whittier H.S.). Just want to give those 2 players for doing a great job behind the plate for your respective teams!!!!
i think villalobos should have won outright...without him i dont think el rancho comes close to winning league...you can make a decent debate for soto but i believe chris was a very valuable to ER's success...plus ER won league...
I played college baseball for 4 years, semi-pro for another 4, and have coached and umpired for lots of years, so I've seen a lot of high level games. I have to say that Villalobos is one of the absolute best PITCHERS I've seen in all that time. I've seen three complete games of his and an inning here or there a few other times, and the young man has good stuff- 80-85 MPH with a nice slider/curve and split, but what makes him so good is something I'd call "presence" on the hill- great composure; a bit cocky in a good way; good pick move and fields his position well; and of course, great command of the strikezone. In, out, up, down, faster, slower. He had the command every time I saw him. Truly, the kid deserves a D1 shot.
Kids like Villalobos and Soto are unfortunately victims of what a lot of really good HS pitchers suffer from- not having either 90 mph+ and/or being an average sized 5'10 - 5" 11" guy like Chris or Victor. It sucks, because guys like Soto and Villalobos could compete at D1 or possibly even at the professional level, but simply because they are 6' or under, or are not a lean body type, they hardly get a look. Soto was sitting at high 80's all season, and even hit 91 a few times, yet he hardly gets any notice! Seriously, make both Vic and Chris 6'3" - 6'5" with the same stuff and success, and they'd be CSF or UCI recruits and likely draft picks. But the kids know: these kids are D1 level. Vic Soto beat the huge guys from Crespi who all have D1 committments, just as the smaller LS kids hit their big stud pitchers just as well as Crespi hit Victor and Casey Serna. Chris would have done the same. Baseball is about heart AND talent, and these kids have both.
One old guy's opinion: Villalobos goes down as one of the top 5 all time DRL pitchers. Let's hope we hear more great things about him in the years ahead. And Victor Soto may be going to Northern Colorado, so at least one DRL guy will be playing D1 next year. (Anyone know of any others?) Good luck, Chris and Victor, and congratulations on great high school careers.
Co-MVP is the right call, WDN.
VILLALOBOS SHOULD BE PITCHER OF THE YEAR NOT MVP SOTO SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN THAT CUZ HE PITCHED AND HIT WELL AND TAKING THEM DEEP INTO PLAYOFFS VILLALOBOS DIDNT HIT WELL TO BE MVP
Congratulations Francisco Fuentes!!!
Thats a big pile of crap, Villalobos should be outright mvp, not a co mvp. This was proven in the last week of the season.
I've gotten off work early several times to witness (ER) Chis Villalobos strong performence and he reminds me of the Flores bothers from EL RANCHO, which both are in the big leagues, but he might have a little of both type of pitching in him. We will see him at the next two levels. Also he umpires my grandson's games, plus he calls a good game.
Co-MVP? Villalobos led his team to a championship. Soto had a great year. But MVP? Beat El Rancho in game 15 and maybe a share is deserved. But this baseball fan doesn't think so.
But the coaches agreed on it and it's their call.
Congrads Chris and Victor.
