Linemen: football's unsung heroes

| | Comments (13) |

How many times you left a football game raving about the performances
of the running backs or quarterbacks, or receivers, or return guys, all
high profile positions.

How often have you come away marveling at the effort of a lineman? Better
yet, do you remember or even know the name of someone who stood out in the trenches?

We're looking for names of returning high school players who
open (or close) holes for the speedy guys toting the ball, or who
provide time for the quarterback, or put pressure on him.

Guys like La Habra's offensive trio of guards Jake Garvey and Willie
Mayoral sandwiched around center Nick McDermott, or Santa Fe's up-front,
two-way standouts Nick Finney and Ray Pinedo.

Who else, from tackle to tackle, should be on this season's list of
must-see candidates along the line? And maybe a short comment of why.

I attended the HALL OF FAME GAME Friday night . It was an exciting game, with lots of twist & turns. The two kids from Duarte where electrifying ,either one could of broke the game open at any minute, that’s way High school football is so special, every kid plays their hearts out. Special Props to “ Travis Shafer “From El Rancho who was a work horse on the line I think he never missed a down on offence. An interception was thrown at the beginning of the third quarter. Travis kept working, even though the kid was about to hit pay dirt, Travis made the needed stop and save the game from being tie. Both sides played hard. Plus really like BASSETT’S new football field & track, very nice.

Sorry to hurt your feelings Rich but two other O-lines probably ranks ahead of yours at LM. The 1992 class and the 97 and 98 class(back to back CIF finals basically the same group). Those 3 seasons LM played tougher competion and had more productive numbers (more passing yards,(the 98 team might be on the border on passing yards) more rushing yards, obviously more total yards,Higher scoring, and beat teams by a larger margin. but if you wish not to beleive me you could always ask Mele or Cardona to see which one he thought was better.

dont forget the Santa fe line from 2005 they also produced two rb's thant went over 1000 yrds and blocked for one of the best qb's to ever play in the DRL

Rich LM2003,
Best in the area ever?I'll cut you slack cause I don't think you've been around long enough to know any better. If they were the best ever they wouldn't have had 4 losses that year, Los Altos killed them something like 49 to 14, Crenshaw also won big over them. They might have been good, just not the area's best ever. Think of St Paul in the 70's or El Rancho
in the 60's, or even schools like Whittier in 64 when they won the CIF title in the top division.

Rich LM2003 said:

Best offensive line in the area ever has to be the 2002 La mirada offensive line tackle to tackle. They had 8-9 guys in the box because that year there was no quarterback and still produced two 1,000 yard rushers garret busk and kyle gran. Jamal James, shannon Tevaga, Rich Mcintosh Shareef Tevaga and Nick Stout avereged 6'1 280pds You cant beat that.

Those boys from santa fe are going to do some damage this year to other teams. These boys are very dedicated to their football. I really don't believe that their is other teams in that league that can match the strength that these boys have and dedication. Raymond is a beast in the weight room and on the field and that goes for Eric and Artie. These boys are stronger than most men. They are going to surprise alot of people. Good job MY BOYS im Proud of you Show all those HATERS OUT THEIR WHAT'S UP!

Roger,
Watching the Swordsmen practice look for Senior #74 Mario Obando. He plays Offensive and defensive tackle.I noticed he was out in the summer with knee problems but should be a major impact player in the area. I've also been out to the La Habra practice during the summer and saw Jake Garvey, the guy's a complete stud. La habra's other BIG guy is Willie Mayoral. I know what Garvey and Mayoral are about so watch out for these guys

I hope teams try and jam SF with 8 man fronts because their scrappy QB and underrated receivers and tight ends will make them pay opening things back up for Turner and the rest of their speedsters. By no means will this team be one dimensional.

This year the DRL looks to be the most well rounded league I’ve seen in years and should be very interesting from week to week. Stay hungry and best of luck all the teams DRL or otherwise!!!!

well murray...
santa fe's line will be with out a doubt the best on both sides of the ball in the DRL and among the top in the division and area this season....with a whole o line coming back that had at least 6 games starting under their belt and 2 that started the whole year...Ray Pinedo, Efrain Riestra, Sergio Garcia, Nick Finney, and Eric Lopez....not including the other three linmen that could start on any other team in the DRL....are all benching at the least 295...at the most 335 and all of the line is squating 400 and up...they take great pride in working hard and doing whatever it takes to get them to the next level and it will show come september-december
the names that will be on the all area team Eric Lopez #70, Efrain Riestra #54...all leauge ray Pinedo #75, nick Finney #74(D-Line), Artie Reveles #60(D-Line)

Jr. Jonathan Montoya. Started the whole season last year at center for ER, he is undersized, he is all heart and has a motor that never stops. He will likely be an all CIF player by the time he graduates from the ranch.

Jr. Victor Hernandez, another undersized kid, but he is another one with all heart. He was key late in the ER vs SF game last season and during OT. He showed what kind of player he can be even though he was only a sophomore.
