Calpreps: St. Paul No. 1, La Habra No. 2 in preseason division football rankings

| | Comments (24) |

Western Division (III)
1. St. Paul (Mission),
2. Palmdale (Golden), 3. Gahr (San Gabriel Valley), 4. Alemany (Mission), 5. Dominguez (San Gabriel Valley), 6. Palos Verdes (Bay), 7. Redondo Union (Bay), 8. Quartz Hill (Golden), 9. West Torrance (Bay), 10. St. Francis (Mission), 11. Chaminade (Mission), 12. Culver City (Ocean), 13. Warren (San Gabriel Valley), 14. Leuzinger (Bay), 15. Beverly Hills (Ocean).
Note: Good for the Swordsmen, although I doubt first-opponent Servite will be overly impressed.
Southwest Division (VI)
1. El Dorado (Century), 2. La Habra (Freeway), 3. Trabuco Hills (Sea View), 4. GG Pacifica (Garden Grove), 5. Fullerton (Freeway), 6. Cypress (Empire), 7. Tustin (Century), 8. Kennedy (Empire), 9. Placentia/Valencia, 10. Western (Orange), 11. El Toro (Sea View), 12. Troy (Freeway), 13. Foothill (Sea View), 14. Anaheim Canyon (Century), 15. El Modena (Century). 25. Sonora (Freeway), 27. Sunny Hills (Freeway), 30. (Buena Park (Freeway).
Note: Move La Habra up a notch and let the rest of the division take their shots at the Highlanders.
Southeast Division (VII)
1. South Hills (San Antonio), 2. Diamond Ranch (Miramonte), 3. Charter Oak (Miramonte), 4. Muir (Pacific), 5. California (Del Rio), 6. West Covina (San Antonio), 7. San Gabriel (Almont), 8. Pioneer (Del Rio), 9. La Serna (Del Rio), 10. Schurr (Almont), 11. Los Altos (Miramonte), 12. Pasadena (Pacific), 13. Alhambra (Almont), 14. Bonita (Miramonte), 15. Burbank Burroughs, 17. Santa Fe (Del Rio), 19. Whittier (Del Rio), 20. Bell Gardens (Almont), 21. El Rancho (Del Rio), 27. Montebello (Almont), 29. Mark Keppel (Almont).
Note: Whew! Can California and Pioneer live up to such high expectations, and can Santa Fe live down the lack of respect?
Southern Division (IX)
1. Laguna Hills (Pacific Coast), 2. Irvine University, 3. Westminster (Golden West), 4. GG Santiago (Garden Grove), 5. Bellflower (Suburban), 6. La Mirada (Suburban), 7. Irvine (Pacific Coast), 7. Ocean View (Golden West), 20. Cerritos (Suburban), 23. John Glenn (Suburban).
Note: A bit surprised about La Mirada's acknowledgment, although reports continue to drift in about the good things happening among the Matadores.
Northwest Division (X)
1. Oaks Christian (Tri-Valley), 2. Gardena Serra (Del Rey), 3. Santa Clara (Tri-Valley), 4. Harvard/Westlake (Del Rey), 5. Oak Park (Tri-Valley), 6. Morro Bay (Los Padres), 7. Torrance (Pioneer), 8. Santa Maria St. Joseph, 9. Nordhoff (Tri-Valley), 10. Carpinteria
(Tri-Valley), 11. Cathedral (Del Rey), 12, South Torrance (Pioneer), 13. Bishop Diego (Tri-Valley), 14. St. Bernard (Del Rey), 15. Pioneer Valley (Los Padres). 21. La Salle (Camino Real), 23. Cantwell Sacred Heart (Camino Real), 25. Verbum Dei (Camino Real), 28. Bishop Montgomery (Camino Real), 29. Mary Star of the Sea (Camino Real).
Note: Cantwell wins a few games and the Cardinals get moved in with the likes of the potent Tri-Valley and Del Rey League powers. What kind of a reward is that?
Mid-Valley (XI)
1. San Dimas (Valle Vista), 2. Paraclete (Olympic), 3. Cerritos Valley Christian (Olympic), 4. South El Monte (Mission Valley, 5. Rosemead (Mission Valley), 6. Northview (Valle Vista), 7. El Monte (Mission Valley), 8. Baldwin Park (Valle Vista), 9. Whittier Christian (Olympic), 10. Monrovia (Rio Hondo), 11. Blair (Rio Hondo), 12. Los Angeles Baptist (Olympic), 13. Covina (Valle Vista), 14. San Marino, 15. Arroyo (Mission Valley), 20. Village Christian (Olympic).
Note: Re-read Northern Division note above, only insert Whittier Christian for Cantwell, and consider the value of the Heralds' reward.

Thanks Bigjer!

Apparently, Mr Friday forgot about the civil rights movement, believes "Brown vs Board of education" should be rescinded, voted against afirmative action, and perhaps Rosa Parks should have gone to the back of the bus!

honestly you have to ask yourself where does SF get all these random players from? then they still go and talk about the whole grigsby situation that happened like 2 years ago. get over it! SF is done its time for a new dynasty! lets see where santa fe finishes off this year. and keep a look out for grigsby's younger brother this season

Not everyone has the means or opportunity to move their family just to make sure their children are able to attend good schools. Sometimes other sacrifices have to be made by parents and students. You have to understand that the education at some schools is not on par and that many of those same schools can be very dangerous. What is wrong with trying to get the best you can for your son or daughter. It seems to make perfect sense.

Mr.Friday said:

If that is the case, don't make excuses for not attending your local school.

Team Parent said:

Mr. Friday night,

It shouldn't matter who lives where, if your child is smart enough, or the best at a position, he will get in the class or play on the field. No excuses, it is what it is.

Mr.Friday said:

I have made huge economic sacrifices in order to afford to live in a desirable neighborhood with great schools, while some parents conviniently get a "permit"
for their kid to attend an out of the way school. If you are strongly unsatisfied with your local school's academic or athletic program, move! It is not fair for that local student to lose a spot in a gifted class
or a starting position on the football team to an outsider.

Chieftain Alumni,

Nothing happened to Cal or La Serna for the transfers you are talking about!! Of course the St. Paul to Cal transfer (Grigsby) was cleared, CIF looked at their books as you put it and found nothing wrong. Was it totally illigal, of course, but CIF saw nothing wrong with it. The other transfer you are talking about (Jordan), there was nothing illegal about the transfer from Schurr to La Serna, the Jordan family still lives 9 houses above La Serna, the move back to Schurr to graduate was illegal, but that is something you might want to bring up with Schurr not La Serna.

The division ranking were always exciting for the team in retrospect it brought a continuity and help synchronize our focus for the moment. Coaches would bring that prognosis into what was a clear focus. Anything could happen up or down. I played youth football at P.R DONS , and can still remember my Dad taking me to Anaheim Stadium to see MATER DEI rank #1 in the nation about early 90,s ? Mater Dei had a huge crowd the BIG RED MACHINE lots of cheerleaders and fans on the sideline. When they ran on to the field with a large team it was very intimidating , it was the zenith of high school football. Opponent (EISENHOWER ) walk on to the field not fully dress, maybe 40 players or so. Suited up in their end zone.
S.F. 49ERS Ronnie Lott was on Eisenhower’s sideline. SCORE 50 TO 3,Eisenhower. I think Eisenhower had two loses that year. After coach Rollinson M.D was interviewed, he said he was contemplating retirement. Glad to see him still coaching. So anything can happen, listen to your coach.

These rankings were based on last years records...Alot changes in a year and Im sure its safe to say that most if not everyone agrees that Santa Fe will be alot higher that 17 in the division

BRAVO teammom!!!

But it’s to bad that some people who take shortcuts ruin what other good people do by the book or without hidden agendas.

None of what you wrote could possibly apply to a kid that bounces from SP to Cal, back to SP only to end up back at Cal just as league starts having his parents claim hardship giving a motel address as a residency or to a kid that ups and leaves his football teammates after winning CIF to play football for another school in his senior year where his daddy gets hired on as a coach only to return to his old school that same school year to play baseball. Naturally when people start pointing out the elephant standing in the middle of the room others try and deflect the obvious by pointing their fingers elsewhere. I applauded you for doing what it takes to try and give your boy the best opportunity in life and even more for doing it right. People love to point the finger at SF but they must be doing things right as I know they welcome CIF to look over their books any day.

I know the same old backlash is coming for my words but I just don’t ever remember anything ever happening there at SF like what happened with those two mentioned.

I've been reading these blogs for some time now, and the same ole issues keep coming up: Transfers. Once a team starts winning, everybody wants to complain that the kids dont come from the area. Well, it needs to stop.

Being the parent of a kid who is on "permit" at SF (which is the only way a kid can transfer, unless you move into a particular area or go to a private school) you dont know what sacrifice my son makes every morning to get up every day, drive 20 miles to school, spend upwards of 10-12hours in a city with practice and his other school activites, and come home every night most times after 7pm. Not to mention, he still has to do his homework and his chores.

"These kids" you are referring to are coming from substandard schools in other areas where there are no books, metal detectors and staggering dropout rates, where walking to school is a task in itself (you read the papers--you know what I'm talking about). I chose to not put my kid through that, researched schools in other areas, switched jobs, and obtained the appropriate forms and signatures to get the best education for my kid--having a good football program is just a perk.

There is no recruiting; these coaches aren't driving these kids to school everyday or taking them home--its the parents who are doing this..sacrificing for their kids futures to insure its as bright as your kids....

So the next time you see one of "those kids" on the street or hanging out at a fast food joint (most likely waiting for their parents to get off work to pick them up because the metro rail is just as dangerous--my son has been stopped twice), just smile and say hey. A little understanding and kindness goes a long way

How and why is Pioneer even ranked? As bad as Montebello has been the last 5-6 years, they still deserve more respect then being ranked below Pioneer. Pioneer=talent, but no results!

To Anonymous let me give you some advice, before you submit your comment please make sure that all your words are spelled correct. If your a teenager it's O.K, but if your a man then your better hit the books again. It kinda makes you look like a dumb*** especially when you say something negative.
I just want to say that the SF chiefs will when the division this year. I don't believe that any team in that division can keep up with them. The line on both sides of the ball are very strong and fast. Many of them have dedication on the field and in the weight room. For all you HATERS out there remember these numbers when you watch this team, #4,#5,#75,#70,and #37. Good job MY BOYS I'm very proud of you, show all these HATERS what your made of. The calpreps are ranking the teams by won-loss records from last year, but this is a new year.

STOP THE WEEKLY CRYING CHIETAN,HOW MANY KIDS DO YOU HAVE ON THIS YEARS TEAM THAT LIVE IN THE DITRICT AREA. ITS STRANGE, THAT YEAR AFTER YEAR YOU COME WITH THESE ATHLTES, YET IF YOU VISIT YOUR CITY YOU NEVER SEEM TO RUN IN TO THESE KIDS.IT MAKES YOU WOUNDER WHERE ARE THEY COMING FROM.

Santa Fe has one bad season (to SF standards)
and Pioneer, Cal Hi, La Serna are ranked higher?

thats a big slap in the face to our program, especially with Pioneer's ranking Cal hi has finally gets a league championship on a SF off year.

Del Rio better watch out SF is reloaded this and for the next 3 year and got something to prove and respect to gain back good luck to all teams (remember they are just kids) play hard play safe

GO CHIEFS!!!!!

PS I really hope Pioneer has a good season this year
they seem to always have a good team but lack support

Are those Roman Numerals correct? I know that the Suburban League has been very disappointing for 3 or 4 years in the playoffs, but a 3 division drop is pretty rough! La Habra is good, but they did move up a division and the team ahead of them has two CIF titles in a row in that division. Let them sort it out on the field. About five minutes of research into the programs, coaches, and returning athletes will tell you that most of those rankings are done with a blindfold. Start the season already...

SP Class of 83 said:

As a Swordsmen from the Class of 1983, when I think of Servite, I remember my Junior year beating Servite 2x's in route to a 14-0 season and CIF Championship.

The first game was close and the playoff game at Cerritos College was a rout.

But that was over 25 yrs ago and Servite is back and has a top level program. But St Paul is back as well and has a very good team. I am glad St Paul is playing a top notch opponenet in pre-season.

Servite/St paul have a long and tradition-filled history and this years battle will just add to that match up.

I just hope this year St Paul sticks around for the drill the Friars do after the game. I hate it but thats their tradition and it should be respected.

But Im old and maybe its a new era. Maybe Coach Pete will take his team off the field again this year.

Observer said:

Obviously you havent researched your numbers too well SP has at least 30 players with tackle experience. They have 17 players with 4 or more years of tackle experience. SP has 71 players on the frosh team if half of that have tackle experience big difference in numbers. Servite is still the heavy favorite at all levels. SP is expected to lose but I do believe the frosh game will be alot closer than people might think. Makes for a good first week of football though.

Credo4Life said:

I agree, that compared to Servite's last two classes the frosh this year might be a little weak. Jako and Welch must be going nuts. I also know that half the SP frosh have never strapped on a helmet or shoulder pads. They have alot of flag football guys. I don't know how you can say they are the "strongest in years". The Servite frosh has 12 good athletes. It should be enough to beat SP. I can't say the same for the rest of our schedule. Could be a long year. The sophomore and junior classes at Servite are loaded with talent, they could go 2 or 3 deep at every position. Pulling flags is one thing, tackling a RB head-on is something totally different.

Muir high school plays Diamond Ranch first game og the season then we will find out wich is a better team.

Observer said:

Credo4life,

I have strong ties to both programs (SP-Servite) I will doubt that at the frosh level Servite will wax any booty. Var and JV well that is another story, I do believe the young frosh class at SP this year is the strongest its been in years. Other than De Rosa not really sure how Servite will win that frosh game. Just an observation it should be a close game. Whats your take on it?

Credo4Life said:

Mr Murray,

You're right,we are not impressed. Servite looks to wax that booty again, on all levels!!!!
