La Habra ready to take dead aim on Southwest Division
His team moves up a notch from the Southeast Division to the Southwest
Division, by the roman numeral from Division VII to Division VI, but La
Habra football coach Frank Mazzotta finds his team at No. 2 in Calpreps'
preseason division rankings.
Asked about his team's chances to repeat as a division champion, he
merely expresses concern about, among others, two-time defending
champion El Dorado, No. 3-ranked Trabuco Hills (No. 3) and fellow
Freeway foe Fullerton (No. 5). He also adds he is excited, as are his
players, about being in this new division. He talks about "having a lot of
fun, getting to play some new teams and welcoming the new challenge."
He also quietly adds his Highlanders, who are coming off a 13-0 (4-0
in league) CIF championship season, should be pretty good. No
arrogance, no boasting, no chest thumping, just answering a question.
He has always been that way.
Clearly he has the credentials to thump some chest.
In Mazzotta's 10 years at the helm, La Habra has posted a 91-30-1
record overall and a 41-8 mark in league. Over the past six seasons, the
Highlanders are 27-2 in league.
His teams have won seven league championships, six of them with
undefeated records. They've reached the CIF Southern Section division
championship finale four times and come home with three CIF titles
(2002, 2003, 2007).
Has La Habra replaced Santa Fe as the area's most dominant program?
Perhaps, if that is of any importance. What is more important is what
the players are getting out of being part of and playing in Mazzotta's
program.
Sometimes one wonders if the community realizes what the program
provides, or maybe they know, and because of its consistency, merely
takes it for granted.
La Habra begins it's bid for more trophy case hardware Sept. 12 on
the road against Downey. It should be a good opener, not necessarily for
the host Vikings.

I have heard about the "Firehouse" grants. I thought it was BS. I have heard that it does really exist from a former player (last year). I feel for the hard working parents who struggle to pay that monthly tuition bill. SP still gets rolled next week. Servite 38 SP 2.
Wrong again. I wouldnt even know who you are talking about. It is illegal to invite kids to the school and talk to them and promise them free education and scholarships. That is not legal, it is called undue influence. I also fail to see where you say they give academic scholarships, name one kid? SP is now a dump run by people of unethical morals and standards, I hope the new principal shuts it down. We will see how you guys think after SP goes 3-7 and misses the playoffs. This is the beginning of the end for SP. SP will never be a D1 school and they will show off their weak D3 championship rings. I applaud the kids but have no respect for the weak unethical football coaches. We all know why a female coach left, is the d coordinator next? Pretty sad how you resort to Mater Dei as your big brother at least Servite is in D1 they would both crush everyone in your pathetic division.
Den Master?
Come correct already and tell everyone why you were tossed out of SP. You cant live your whole life being bitter. Don't be bitter be better! How are you going to explain football at Cerritos College? RR we all know who are. Stop hateing on your school. Get over it!
By the way the Firehouse has great chicken wings.
Also, I read your bio in the schools web site, stop saying that you were a good football player. I saw you play and I was not impressed. You were horrible, slow, dumb and can't tackle! Have a nice day....
SP 24
Servite 21
CREDO , ARE YOU OVER HERE GIVING ST PAUL FAITHFUL A HARD TIME?
COME BACK TO YHE OC BOARDS AND GIVE US HARD TIME .
SCARED??
SEE YOU SOON !!!
credo don't be angry .. you can borrow my ring if you'd like.
St Paul has had transfers way back since the 80's.
The 81 CIF Title team had key starters from East LA, Cerritos, Gardena as well the all the local cities surronding SFS. These players were very popular with their teammates and classmates and Im sure these current transfers will also form lifelong friendships as they attend SPHS.
As for alumni sending their kids there, some do and some don't. But I have yet to hear of an alumni rebellion .
Catholic schools have always offered "academic scholarships" to students who want to attend a catholic school. Mater Dei does it, Servite does it, Loyola, Cathedral, Bishop Amat do it.
It is true and many go to top notch athletes but the majority go to deserving students whose parents could not afford a private school education.
Its all legal and those parents complaining is probably due to their kids moving from starter to 2nd string but thats life, its a tough world and learning how to deal with roadblocks is part of growing up.
I agree I think SP will shock the world if they score.
Pitman,
That is the new era at SP now a days. No wonder none of the alumni send their children there anymore. Lets hope the Ms. Barr cleans house. Once the alumni return then the school will return to prominence. How do the parents that work hard to send their kids there feel about the football transfers that get their tuition paid for thanks to "Firehouse" grants. Week zero Servite 42 SP 0.
Anonymous ,
I think you are first guy to bring up his wife and her
career. This a football blog so what are you doing here. SP will shock the world next friday. I think we can score at will. i have seen our offense.
Swordsman,
Depends on the year,01,04,05,06 West Co could play with St.Paul, last year was a very good year for you, don't think you will be as good this year, my guess is that WC could play with you this year.
Pitman,
Sorry for sounding like an "elitist", maybe its called being educated.
Target date for the WDN football tab is Wednesday, Sept. 3.
Anonymous,
No one cares where you went to school or what your wife does for a living. This blog gets pretty heated, so if you can't handle the heat go fix your tie and order and Starbuck's latte. At least Credo4Life has a take and doesn't sound like some Servite elitist, as you do. Go Swordsmen.
Yo Murray,
When does the WDN football preview coming out?
How many times has Santa Fe beat SP? Oh thats right they have never beat SP. Wouldve couldve shouldve doesnt count they have never beat SP, 0-9
Yo, must go: It should be under the city Montebello
Anonymous,
You should go more in depth with your hw.
SF has dominated the DRL since it formed. That is why I would put them at #2. SF has won or had a share of the title every year except for like 4 or 5. Like i said they never win the big one. They had a stretch from 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 without losing a league game...They even dominated the league in years prior to that. So when they referred to SF as one the top programs in the area that is what they talked about. Some of those teams at SF from the last 10 years would have beat SP or La Habra.
We will never know who would win those games though, but I suggest that when you want to compare programs you take your research further than 2 or 3 years bc a programs success is not measured over a 2 or 3 year run but over decade or longer.
under the find your team link
where is cantwell's link?
credo4life what ever that means ? This is about football , so sharpen your tool or open your eyes . Who is dominant ? SWORDSMEN I'am sure not your intellet or knowledge of HS ball ! Whatch this season and learn .
Credo4Life,
Why so much anymosity towards SP? Lets remember that you are talking about 15-18 yr old kids? I bet that SP poster is one of those kids not even worth the time for a response. My wife graduated from SP and she is an attorney while I went to Servite. My daughter went to SP and graduated from Cal, I dont understand why the classless bashing on the school. It is what you make of it academically, right? If you are here to bash then please it is a football blog not really needed here. Its a shame a fellow Friar would carry himself that way!
To Hmmmmm.....
If you are going to make pronoucements on the top football programs in the area at least do a little more research to establish some credibility.
La Habra - Even though La Habra plays at a different level you have to give them props. A CIF championship is a championship no matter what level they are at. I agree a #1 ranking is apppropriate.
Santa Fe - Quarterfinals in 2004, Semis in 2005 and like you said they can't win the big one in 2006. In 2007 they go 5-6. While a nice run, couple that with playing in an even lower level of football, hardly deserving of #2. At best #3.
St. Paul - Semi's in 2003, Quarters in 2004, 5-5 in 2005, Semi's again in 2006 (with a very young team) and a CIF championship in 2007 in a much higher level of football, D3 vs what? D7 or 9 for Santa Fe? Do you remember where you left your teeth today because your memory is bad if you can only remember last year. Easily #2 in my book and an arguement could be made for #1.
Schurr, Cal Hi, La Serna - Pick 'em for spots 4 and 5.
sorry forgot 4 and 5
4. Schurr- great program in the Almont league and has a CIF title to back it up.
5. I cant think of anyone really to put here...I thought about Cal but SF has dominated the DRL. Cal I think has 2 DRL title and ER and Pioneer have one each of the ones SF has not won
Swordsmen,
Man, you aren't the sharpest tool in the shed are you. Another fine example of the intellects SP churns out every year. My money is on La Habra. They will whoop up on SP. SP is small, slow and unathletic.
DAN OR MIKE Listen , stand at the back of the room ! w.c cant play with us and not la habra !
Most dominant in regards to winning recent football games would definitely be, La Habra. Best area representative amongst other area teams would be Santa Fe. Historically the best program from a traditional standpoint would be St. Paul, they do more with less. Remember Mazzotta at La Habra and Zepeda at El Rancho are SP alums. Up and coming program in the area would be Cal Hi they have dethroned Santa Fe and are the Del Rio defending champs. This year will be a telling one for them. Cantwell is also making strides to become an area power locally. Murray can we get a write up on area players that are at the next level.
TOP 5
1. La Habra- if they win their new division they are obviously the cream of the crop in the area.
2. St. Paul- Toughest schedule around might lose to all D1 schools but no one else in the would win those games either.
3. Santa Fe- Alway a bully in league and always beat by second rate teams in playoffs.
4. Cal Hi- Can Arnold win without Ancichs players, still has a few left? That is the big question.
5. Cantwell- Small school with growing football aspirations.
I agree with Dan La Habra has been the best program in the area. Santa Fe has been THE PROGRAM in the Del Rio League and you cant argue that. And St. Paul also belongs in the conversation. Here are my TOP 5 Football Program
1. La Habra 3 CIF title recently and dominate their league
2. Santa Fe, class of the DRL, but never wins the big one
3. SP. Only really good year was last year in recent memory

SWORDSMEN,
Take a reading comprehension class, I think your a bit confused, my post is under my name not above, and my team is West Covina, last season you might have killed us but this year I think we could play with you, good luck this year.
GO WC BULLDOGS
DAN , ST PAUL will kill your team -s.f ??or are you scare to SAY! What team are you hiding behind ?
"Has La Habra replaced Santa Fe as the area's most dominant program?"
I think you are off your meds again Murray!!! What exactly has Santa Fe won again? 1 Finals appearance. Clearly La Habra is the best program in the area! No need for your responses St. Paul people.
No offense Murray, or Santa Fe fans
but when has Santa Fe ever been a more dominant program than La Habra? I'm not a La Habra fan, but haven't they been fighting for CIF title's for like the past decade? I will say, Santa Fe does have a pretty good program down there, but I think La Habra & St. Paul in most years, would beat any of the locals.
El Rancho, how are your Dons looking? See you on Sept. 5, hope it turns out to be a good game.
Go WC Bulldogs.
