CIF schedules, and more random thoughts ...

Note the adjusted start times for some of Friday's first-round football playoff games:
Four of the seven local entries will play their games starting at 7 p.m.
The CIF office suggests a 7:30 p.m. start, but the time may be changed so long as both coaches agree.
Local teams playing the earlier starting time are Santa Fe (vs. Burbank), La Serna (vs. San Gabriel), La Habra (vs. Anaheim) and La Mirada (vs. Corona del Mar, at Newport Harbor HS).
Local teams with 7:30 starts are California (vs. Crescenta Valley, at Glendale HS), Schurr (vs. South Hills) and Cantwell (at Santa Maria St. Joseph).

More random stuff ...
If Qb Greg Perea remains sidelined by his ankle injury, should coach Jim Arnold go with a single wing attack? Backup QB Eddie Artiga shows promise for next season, but a beefed up ground attack coming at them in bunches might surprise the Falcons ...

Can playoff enthusiasm overcome any potential disorientation for Cantwell caused by the long drive to Santa Maria? Focus will be key, and it often is more easily accomplished at home ...

There is much talk -- and rightly so -- about the huge impact of running back Aaron Turner in Santa Fe's offense. But don't overlook the Chiefs' rapidly improving passing game and the development of junior quarterback Alex Flores. Having tight end Nicolai Crouch and wide receiver Adrian Mahlstede to throw to makes it a bit easier ...

Said it before, saying it again: QB Ben Burke may be the catalyst for La Serna's offense, but wide receivers Jonathon Rodriguez and Freddie Sanchez are the Lancers' big play guys.

Why does someone feel the need to spread the rumor that St. Paul football coach Pete Gonzalez is leaving. At this point, at least, that is not only untrue, it is without basis even for consideration. As for the innuendo-laden rumor that St. Paul will no longer accept transfer students, someone who would know says there is no change one way or the other. "The critieria is the same as always," said one source. "The applicant has to be a qualified student and a good kid who can contribute to the community." No mention of athletic ability was mentioned ...

One of St Paul's players was told by little pete that they were out of there. They need to be careful with "who knows what" and with "how much they talk". Some times it is better to remain quiet. Oops, I should practice what i preach.

Just back from the SGV blog. As usual, there is alot more actvity there. Is there more passion in the SGV than the Whittier area or just more schools covered?
It is also disappointing to see the poor showing of the Almont league and Del Rio in the first round.

Yo Murray, nice WDN articles on Cal’s Jones and La Serna’s Burke. My only question is was there no one on the DRL Championship team worth writing about? Alex Flores is not a prototypical QB but his huge heart, gutsy play and weekly improvements helped guide SF to another 5-0 league championship. What about Adrian Lopez who is a stand out on both offense and defense not to mention burning LS on special team which was a HUGE way to start off the DRL title game? Or what about the entire SF defense that held the high powered LS offense which some boasted that no one could handle their 2 big receivers to 7 points and not giving up more then 21 all season.

Don’t get me wrong, I am glad for these 2 athletes getting some love because they deserve it but it honestly seems like SF’s accomplishment this season is some how belittled. This wasn’t a team like last years El Rancho to seemingly come out of nowhere to knock of an unbeaten Cal team but rather a “band of brothers” that took everything everyone had to say for their down year last year and fought each and every week doing whatever it took to win. Everyone seemed to agree that if you cram the box and stop Turner SF will fall but yet as his yardage diminished the victories still came.

Best of luck to the DRL, make us and your league proud!!!!!!

Yo, The Eye: Actually, I meant the single wing.

Murray-
You might want to read up on your football history. I hope you meant Wing-T or Double Wing for the Condors - the Single Wing is a complex offense that very few young coaches are familiar with. You'd have to pull those schemes from Roundy, Mele, and M. Ancich - I don't think even Mahlstede is old enough to have seen that live. The Wing-T is what Whittier runs, the Double Wing is what Markham has spread around - which puts the QB as one of the lead blockers. In either case, a huge transition to make for a spread team. Is the Crescenta Valley team the same school that St. Paul played when D. Tardy scored 9 TD's in the playoffs a few years ago? That would be a huge drop to go from Div. III to Div. VII. Has anyone researched that?

Even you laughed at your paragraph on St. Paul. That idiot coach would do the program good by leaving. If it wasn't for his coordinators that program would be in real trouble.

How about doing a piece on the Southern Conference Champions, Fullerton College. They've got locals Joe Morales (SEM, SP), Jose Perez (SP), and Albert Hernandez (SF).

Yo Mr. Murray,

How about doing a feature article on the Cerritos College football team making a bowl game for the first time in about 5 years and narrowly missed the chance at a league title in a tough league that features 2 of the top 5 teams in the country and they beat the top team in the country this year. There is a alot of local talent on that team like Matt Moody (Sonora), Drew Harris (CAL), David Flores (SF,SP), and there are more
