Coin flip eliminates St. Paul from playoffs

| | Comments (30) |

Chaminade High School's upset of St. Francis Friday night created a three-way tie for second in the Mission League and momentarily gave reason for St. Paul to have hopes of a playoff berth despite its 4-6 season record. Alemany (9-1, 3-0) locked up one of the league's two playoff berths as the league champion. Athletic directors from St. Francis (6-4, 1-2), St. Paul 4-6, 1-2) and Chaminade (2-8, 1-2) had a coin flip late Friday night to determine positioning teams in second, third and fourth places. St. Paul was the odd team out in the coin flip, and according to league bylaws that list head-to-head competition as the first tie-breaker, Chaminade's win over St. Francis gives the Eagles second place and the league's second automatic playoff berth. St. Francis will be listed as No. 3 and St. Paul No. 4.

Just a thought here, but any idea which high school we are looking at as far as recruiting? I think St paul did burn that Mayfair bridge......

Tech Savy said:

a source of mine said about coach pete leaving is a rumor and a rumor only nothing definet...St.Paul does have one "Excellent/Talented" kid that will be back at st.paul next year but he has choosen to play baseball only...Rightfully so this kid has an arm like no other at his age ... i hope him the best ...with that said "Tech Savy" out

Hey "Amat is back" whaaaa happened? Talk about our slow chubby linemen and 'Payback!' You get slapped by Poly. Now you know what its like when you're the lil' guy on the block (SP) and the big bully (Notre Dame, Servite, etc.) takes your lunch money. With that said, big props only losing tonight by 4.

That’s okay, the CAL people didn’t think their beloved Dusan was going anywhere either!!!! Time will tell.

Head Coach is gone for ST. Paul said:

Heard at the Firehouse grill that Coach Pete is leaving. He feels that the school is cracking down on transfers and he will not be able to win a championship with what he has. Any truth? I saw another post kinda of asking if its true? Anyone know? I am not sending my son to SP if I don't know who the head coach will be.

SP DAD said:

Hey Anonymous: no ones "chest flexing" over here. Just proud of who we are. And if you were at the Pioneer game (Freshmen) and got there when the game started. We scored on our 1st Drive and blocked their punt on their 1st drive to go up 14-o within minutes of the game. Then the rotation opened up for kids who don't always get in the game. And your absolutely right... they were bigger then us at "some" positions. Who isn't... Loyola, St. John Bosco, St. Francis. They were bigger then us in "every" position. We won those games to. So what's your point????

SP 89 Alumni: Yeah, there's been rumors. But, as of right now they're all coming back. I think they're doing a great job!

Amat is back said:

hey football watcher,
we made the playoffs in the pac5. you didn't make the playoffs in D3. i hope you guys play servite next year, so they can punk you again. short, chubby, slow lineman will not get it done.

SP DAD your using the word WOW? Please, what their teaching is fighting at public events. Do you know what Parochial means? Narrow minded and don’t experience all of life around you, football aside

Anonymous said:

St.paul stop the chest flexing ,when you play the pac 5 schools you get punked. don't talk about your lower levels. I was at the freshman game with pioneer you guys were pretty much the same size and i they may have been even bigger in some spots.

Love us or hate us you are still talking about SP a week after the end of the regular season!

We are in your heads and always will be!!!!!

GO SWORDSMEN!

Is the entire football staff returning next year? I heard rumors otherwise...

SP DAD (Freshmen) said:

I just started viewing these sights this year. I grew up in this area and played in the DRL league. My son is now a Freshmen who attends SP. I used to feel the same way as some of the guys who come on and bash SP. I now understand why people are so Jealous of this program. WOW... the hard work and time these kids and coaches put into this program is amazing. Not only does SP teach these boys about football. But, they also teach them how to be young men. Just a different level of Football. Varsity had a tough season. But, everyone knows, your not gonna win every year. Especially coming off a "Championship" season and losing your entire defense. It doesn't happen at this level. Plenty of talent..Yes. But, not enough experience. Proud to be an SP Parent. GO SWORDSMEN!!

what do you have said:

Who do you have coming back SP that has talent, Tell me offense and Defense who

Football Watcher said:

Hey AMAT is back,

Another ignorant comment allowed to be put on here and by an AMAT "DOG" no less. Good luck with POLY. Enjoy your one week playoff stint. We will see you in THE PIT next year. Where it will be all settled.

play pac 5 teams are get demolished. its one thing to schedule pac 5 teams its another thing to actually compete against them. so stop pounding your chest about how SP plays PAC 5 teams.

St Paul must be so proud!!!!!

Budweiser sales will be down in Santa Fe Springs now that St. Paul is done. SP JV is horrible and the Frosh are "okay", so does why does SP think they will be good next year? They have tiny lineman and very few athletes.

parent of an SP student said:

Hey from the stands....you should just stay in the stands...it suits you best...just remember who plays all the pac 5 teams?...who has the toughest schedule of any team in the area?....and who won a title last year...in DIV III no less?.....only area school with guts to play SP was Pioneer...no other team....yell from the stands....the only place you should be....

from the stands said:

wow SP last place in your league!! So when are you guys gonna put Aubrey Haynes and David Flores numbers on your stands?? Is it not tradition to put ALL CIF players names and numbers on the stands???

Maybe you guys are gonna reload and try and steal some DRL talent to your school, again. Who knows maybe you will go after David's lil bro at SF. The sad part is that the area comes to expect this from your program.

good luck in baseball season and if you wanna watch playoff football you wont have to go far.
SF, CAL, LS , and LH will be playing nearby.

SP you are the best in the area, After two great seasons we are just reloading watch out next year we WONT BE STOPPED !!!!

reloading,,,,,is that what you call it?

Hmmmm....

I love St. Paul football. but i hope that next season they find a stronger line for the offense. in a lot of games the opposition seemed to play with our offensive line. we were too small . looking forward to a better season next year

If you read Campa's article you would think St. Paul ws eliminated by losing the game but in reality were not eliminated until the coin flip.

Again, more of that in-depth, stellar reporting we've come to expect of Campa.
