Random thoughts after a great weekend of football

| | Comments (31) |

Can anyone contain La Serna's three receivers - Jonathan Rodriguez, Freddie Sanchez, Kyle Gluck ...

Although occasionally erratric, La Serna QB Ben Burke's performance, that is delivering in the clutch and making big plays at the right times, running and/or passing, was the best in the position I've seen this season ...

Games starting at 7:30 p.m. are killers for the WDN deadline, especially when the last three or four minutes can take as many as 20-25 minutes ...

Teams that win games they are supposed to win should be judged on that basis, and not on the perception of how big the point differential should have been ...

La Habra's (and San Diego State's) Ronnie Hillman sets the standard for versatility, a superb running back and an outstanding receiver, but the Highlanders' best ball carrier may be Joshua Quezada. And he's just a junior ...

In terms of dependablity and performance, week in, week out, Whittier RB Daniel Enriquez ranks with the leaders ...

Montebello 34, Alhambra 16: Trying to figure out how high Montebello has climbed or how far has Alhambra fallen ...

It may be because of the size of his school or the division it's in, but somebody should be paying more attention to Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary QB Cesar Hernandez, who keeps putting up big numbers. This week, it was four TD passes in a 50-7 rout of La Salle to keep the Cardinals in playoff contention ...

Those who question why St. Paul needed a comeback and then overtime to defeat a team with a 1-7 record shouldn't let the score cloud the fact the Swordsmen needed a W and got it. Consider that underdogs often rise to the occasion in hopes of playing the spoiler ...

So much for the rumor Montebello QB Eli Mendibles broke his hand punching someone during the melee following the Schurr game last week and wouldn't play against Mark Keppel Friday night. He played, the OIlers won and another rumor down the drain ...

Disappointing to see empty seats on La Serna's side of the field. California clearly won the battle of fan support Friday night at Cal High ...

Deliver us from public address announcers who seem to think they're on the radio and feel compelled to explain to the crowd what the spectators can see themselves. And even worse, become very vocal cheerleaders for the home team ...

Stay tuned ...

What do you expect from an AMAT "DOG", all about SP envy. Thats ok, good luck with LB POLY. We will see you next year in THE PIT.

mr hmmm,

aww..yesir you are correct, it was the ol' Whitmont league. you have thwarted my smart a** attempt to make you look dumb. but in all fairness we were pretty much saying the same thing about LS and respect; you just went a little deeper than I did. And since LS lost, they will have to get respect in the playoffs. it's always fun debating and arguing on the blogs (even though I was only responding to Mr. Murray in the first place.) sorry for calling you an 'idiot' as well, I'm sure your intelligence is , at the very leaset, slightly above that of a moron. (being a smart a** again, can't help it)

so I will part by saying good luck to all teams area heading into the playoffs and may no player get injured.

The Del Rio league didn't exist in the 80's I believe it was the Whitmont league and i believe he was refering to the years since the del rio league was established.

mr hmmm,

So what have you said that I already haven't? I've merely stated that LS will get respect if they beat Santa Fe; respect from the league and the division. Are you dumb or can you just not comprehend anything? La Serna has one the DRL title before... way back in the 80s. Everything you've just said reinforces my "rant."

If you, are attempting, to point out the fact that I went off topic by attacking Murray's analysis of the game and my prior comment, then yes, I went off topic. Congrats, but in the future specify on what I exactly need to get a clue on.

So in summation, you're an idiot and everyone on this blog is now dumber for reading your comment. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul. (couldn't resist a paraphrased line from Billy Madison, my apologies.)

Yo, Fire Mike,
Santa Fe may have something to say about that.as for giving La Serna credit, you havn't been paying attention. The Lancers are ranked No. 2 in the area. No. 6 in the division Actually, I put them no. 5 on my ballot in this week's CIF rankings.

To all you del rio bloggers the problem with the del rio is that there schedule strength is weak!!!!!!! meaning 8-0 means notha no championships notha!!!!!!! get it notha!!!!!! ha ha ha ha ha. were is a team from the mission league ala St.Francis,Alemany,St.Paul,Chaminade.THERE SCHEDULE STRENGTH IS IN THE HIGH 20's or 30's were Sant fe 14 La Serna 7 GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEAD YOU WILL NEVER, NEVER WIN NO DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIPS PLAYING WITH THAT WEAK OF SCHEDULE.But with all due respect I wish the best for all.

Cal Fan said:

First off, props to LS for whooping CAL. As much as I hate to say it, that is exactly what happened.

The LS/SF game should be interesting. La Serna's passing attack against Santa Fe's smashmouth attack. I believe the key is La Serna's ability to stop Aaron Turner. If they can do that, they have a very good shot. Good luck to both teams, whoever wins deserves the DRL.

Big Oso, how can you say that Perea has not been put in the right situations? It's an offense which allows Greg to run, scramble, and run option well when Urquiza was healthy. He has prospered and done a great job for the Condors all year long. They have tried to run the power I at times this year, the problem is the line is not physical or strong enough. They ran power successfully one game against SF with Avila & Rojas in the backfield and unfortunately it took its toll on the defensive side of the ball for the Condors.

STEP UP SENIORS, the playoffs start Friday! Don't go out like that.

say what,

leave the blogging to the people that actually have a clue. If your gonna rant and rave for a while please make worth the time to read.

As for the big game of the year in the DRL. Its gonna be a great game for the league title. LS trying capture its 1st DRL ever i believe and SF tryin to add one more the trophy case. This game is bigger than just the DRL title its also about respect. LS is tryin to get the resepct their fans feel they deserve which is hard to get respect when #1 you play a cupcake schedule and #2 LS has never done in anything to get respect from the DRL and the Division. This years SF team wants to re-establish SF as "THE PROGRAM" in the DRL and has to go unbeaten in league to do that and earn that respect back.

and football watcher,

its funny how you call it swordsman football but if you ask the bloggers its more like RENT-A-SWORDSMAN FOOTBALL around here...and why would the local paper want to cover a game between chaminade 1win vs. SP 3 wins before they beat 1win chaminade in OT?

WTF said:

What dropped passes at the almighty St Paul? How can this be when their team is so much better then everyone else? And let me guess even though your record reads 4-5 it’s actually like 7-2 or 8-1?????

Give me break, you’re as bad as those certain CAL fans that couldn’t handle losing to SF and came in here blaming the refs. Just like Cal you SP will be fighting for their playoff lives this week so suck it up buddy!!!!! And if those butterfinger receives happen to be juniors it’s okay because I’m sure the scouts can find other ones to replace in their senior year.

Football Watcher said:

Dear Mr Murray,
If you pulled yourself away from your beloved PUBLIC school games and drove out to see SP, you would of seen that we should of won the game out right if not for serveral dropped wide open TD passes. The defense held them to an honest 14 points although it shows 28 and the offense was moving, but some reason on several 4th and inches to 1-2 yards we opted to punt instead of sneaking it as we have been doing and been successful recently. So please Mr Murray don't write an absurd segment about if anybody questions, come on out to a SP game sometime and not send a corrospondant, and see for yourself that there is football outside your beloved sheltered little world of DEL RIO. Its called SWORDSMEN FOOTBALL.

say what said:

yo Murray,

Wow you're actually showing love for LS? Never thought I'd see the day... little FYI, I'm a LS football alumn and LS supporter/coach. LS has earned respect from the opponents that they have beaten, but they still need to beat a 4-0 Santa Fe team. In reality it does come down to one game, because this team should win all their games.

And if YOU saw the game, you would know that both stands were packed. Furthermore, that those "empty LS seats" were reserved for the band. Oh and weren't you the one to pic LS to lose almost every week, especially against CAL? I wonder if you will pick Santa Fe to win... please do, we just love the way you have not expected us to win. I agree that LS has earned respect, but to earn total respect from the Del Rio and the rest of the South-East division, Santa Fe needs to be beaten. Without a doubt if LS shows up to play they will beat SF.

So go ahead and write your poorly covered articles and leave the blogging to the people, because we obviously have more insight than yourself. That goes for you too Campa. Wondering if you'll even post this.

Much love,

Say What

Roger Murray Author Profile Page said:

Yo, say what: If you saw the Cal-La Serna game, I would think you'd agree La Serna already has earned respect. It's not going to come because of just one game. The Lancers have displayed improvement in nearly every aspect of the game over the course of the season. The program appears to be on solid ground.

It's called a BLACK OUT people! It's just something that get's the crowd involved and excited! Traditionally, from what I am told, the lights are supposed to be shut off at half time so that one side looks completely black... hence black out. Of course the only way that could happen is if LS played at Pioneer stadium, since those lights can be turned on and off without any time wasted. The black jerseys were a last minute deal.. it's just something that gets the kids excited.

But I have no idea why volleyball has black STRIPED jerseys...

Good year of football in the DRL, everything is gonna be decided this week.

LS vs SF
The winner is gonna be league champs and the loser is 2nd place

Cal vs Whittier
The winner 3rd place and probably the last playoff spot

Pioneer vs ER
The winner finally gets a win in league and doesn't finish in last place

Good luck to everyone and good job on a good season

Can some please explain to me why La Serna wore black jerseys in the football game versus Cal? Then I caught a look at some pictures of their girls volleyball team here on the WDN site and their uniforms are predominantly black and gold. What is that all about? Naturally I can see black lettering but for it to be a prominent overall color seems a bit off. I even thought I might have missed something so I checked maxpreps.com and calpreps.com and each site list La Serna’s colors as Crimson/Gold/White. No where does it mention black.

It was a great atmoshere to watch a game. I am sure that it will be remembered by all who attended. The LS side turned people away after an estimated 6,000 were in attendance (including both sides). LS coach's exploited Cal poor pass defense and small db's (just like Pacifica did). Cal's linebackers and safeties over persue which made that screen such a great call. LS has more athletes in the skill positions then Cal. Burke had to throw for 300 yrds and had a 85 yrd td called back. Two years ago, LS lost games to SF and Cal and then lost on the last game of the regular season to Whittier. The same match up that Cal has. I still don't understand the 4th and 1 call from the Cal 25? The score was 10-7 at the time early in the 3rd qtr. After that score by LS, the game was over. The announcer from LS is still horrible! The game is bigger then your comments in between every play! Stay healthy and good luck to the selected teams from the Del Rio league in the playoffs. Roger it was PACKED on the LS side. They should have more police there to direct traffic out of the parking lot and onto Mills. It takes forever to get out of there.

Cal > Del Rio said:

I have to give it to La Serna for beating cal on the passing game..Burke and the receivers looked too dominant making acrobatic catches here and there..

Burke out shined Perea's best performance of the year, which had to be replaced idk what for (perhaps b/c he should have thrown the ball away a few times instead of trying to run out of the pocket and lose yardage) but probably because Artiga has a better arm and it was needed late..and i must say he did a heck of a job for the amount of time he was in there, except the last three passes he made

Perhaps Urquiza's return was a bit premature, but TJ had a great game, perhaps Gamino should have been given a few more carries but w/e
it was a good game that was interesting w/ great fan support on both sides..

yeah ssure La Serna had a blackout and wore beat cal shirts but Cal had great fan support.. i saw painted faces, crazy hats, glowsticks, beat the lancer shirts, props to whoever brought beachballs, standing room only practically, and most importantly fans never gave up and cheered till the end....now that i think of it i dont remember hearing la serna fans cheer unless they scored, while cal fans were cheering and chanting throughout the whole game

its unfortunate for the condors but they have to comeout their next friday and beat Whittier so that they can show in the playoffs that once given another chance they can beat anyone...learn from your mistakes and good luck to everyone this week, LS vs SF should be a great game

elrancho said:

Roger I am sure you are talking about La Serna's announcer, that guy is absolutely horrible, I am truly surprised that no one has put in a complaint to the CIF for that guy. What is so hard about saying, ball carried by #32, tackled by #13, or TD El Rancho, or TD Santa Fe... etc.... there is no need to cheer or try to call it like you are a play by play guy. I am glad we have a very professional sounding PA guy in Armie Briones at El Rancho.

Big Oso said:

Congratulations to the La Serna Lancers. It pains me to say this but La Serna came out with enthusiasm that was second to none. La Serna from the start of the game smacked the mighty condors in the mouth, stunning the regal bird into extinction. The Condors played with no emotion what so ever. Maybe it was the lack of respect they had for La Serna. La Serna had a simple game plan. Load the box to stop the run and see if Greg Perea can beat them with the pass. It seems teams are figuring out the Condors aquillies heel. I don’t want to put the loss on the shoulders of one player. Greg is a great athlete and competitor. He has the heart of a lion. I blame the coaching staff for putting him in situations that he has not the physical capabilities for. He does not stretch the defense with his arm. With the offense they are running (spread option) Greg is like a duck out of water. If you are going to use his assets (speed) why not try a more conventional option offense using the power I. You have a great full back in Matt Urquiza and a speed back in Terris Jones coupled with Greg Perea. How can it not work? Has coaching become so UN imaginative? Sometimes you have to build an offensive philosophy with the type of players you have. I love my Condors and I want to see them fly high. I hope the coaching staff does not bench Perea. He is a valuable asset to the team and a great leader. I still believe in this team and they will rebound with a victory over Whittier. I just hate to be the number one seed that has to play these Condors in the first round of the playoffs. Go Condors!

Roger you are crazy!! How can you say that there were empty seats on La Serna's side. I was at the game and there was not an empty seat in the house, there was not an empty area leading up to the snack shack (the fence). You are nuts....I am sick and tired of your lack luster coverage of this area. Your a joke!!! Both sides (Cal High and La Serna) were represented well and both sets of fans showed nothing but class!!

Hank said:

Extremely weak comments. I happened to be at the La Serna vs. Cal game. It took about 30 minutes just to get tickets. If there were empty seats none of those hundreds of people standing along the fence knew.
