Week 8 results: A trio of tough losses and an upset

| | Comments (36) |

Favorites dominated the winners' circle for local high school football,
but three frustrating losses and one upset stole the spotlight.

Santa Fe 21, California 20
Trailing, 20-14, with 1:39 to play, Chiefs get a 20-yard TD pass to tie
it, then a 35-yard extra point kick to win it with 14.2 seconds
remaining.

St. Francis 15, St. Paul 14 (2 OT)
Visiting Knights rallied from 14-7 deficit with a 6-yard TD run, then
completed a 2-point conversion pass for the deciding point.

Bishop Montgomery 36, Cantwell 35 (3 OT)
Cantwell extends game, stays close but can't win it at the end as
Knights win it with a 24-yard TD pass.

La Serna 35, El Rancho 12
Lancers area's only unbeaten team and sit atop the Del Rio League thanks
to a balanced attack and a complementary defense.

La Mirada 37, Bellflower 14
Matadores storm back from a 14-0 first-quarter deficit to upset the host
Buccaneers and grab an inside track to one of the Suburban League's four
automatic playoff berths.

La Habra 41, Sunny Hills 7
Highlanders stretch their scoring advantage over three Freeway League
opponents to 148-7, and appear primed for next week's showdown with
Fullerton.

Schurr 28, Montebello 18
Spartans win battle for crosstown bragging rights, but may have started
a bit early which reportedly was instrumental in a post-game brawl
between the teams' players..

Whittier 41, Pioneer 32
As usual, Pioneer scores enough points to win, but Titans' defense can't
hold up its end of the bargain as Cardinals' Enriquez runs for 287 yards
and four touchdowns.

Timmy Palomino will not be returning to play ball anywhere this year :((((

Hopefully the condors can pull through as a team and succeed, its gonna be a lil tougher to be league champs now :(((

a lil ray of good news, the freshman on varsity seems to be good and will be a threat for del rio this year and for years to come..and their freshman team looks really good..

..This now means that the Cal returning starters only include Greg Perea and Mike Arceo..other main guys from last year are Shawn Carter and Victor Cruz

basketball season is coming :)
good luck to those in the playoffs for football

White, Yellow or Blue what ever it should always be your school colors. Show your school spirit and support your boys. Play hard tonight and never give up Condors. As for the La Serna wearing black, whatever happen to your school spirit in wearing your school colors, black now come on, what are you showing your students. GO CONDORS, WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!

I know that we are not even done with league in football, but its never to early to talk about basketball :)

letss see...
Cal will be returning three starters palomino, arceo, and perea all of them very good..condors will probably miss drew harris the most from last year's graduating class, but look for others to step up. i believe the main returners are Carter and Cruz

La Serna is going to be very good this year. Although fernando alveres has departed, la serna has Bridge in another very good big man. he is going into his senior year, he has height and a great shot. his weakness is perhaps his strength. la serna also has good gaurds like chacon.

Santa Fe had many seniors departing last year, especially guard Maurice Cole. But it seems like every year they have departing seniors and bring in a new class of seniors from the many juniors on jv. sf is always athletic and will have some height. i believe they have #13(not sure) returning who all he does is shoot threes and can make them if not contested.

Pioneer like cal has three returning starters saldana, crosby and vega. these players were crucial for them last year and will be crucial for them again this year. I dont know how the rest of the team fares but i think that jovan thompson up from jv will be playing a lot for the titans this year, could be wrong though..

El Rancho has a team in which a couple years ago was rebuilding and full of sophomores. now those sophomores are seniors. Perhaps their biggest weakness is their height. they must score on first tries because it doesnt look like they will be getting many boards.

Whittier is returning a few guys i think. they are sure gonna miss big man leonetti from last year. i dont know much about them, but i do know that they play real rough and dirty, and on any given night can beat a team in league.

anyways good luck to all the football teams this friday. gonna be some great games out there, especially the cal vs. la serna game

:)

basketball divisions show why pioneer should not be in the del rio league anymore all the other teams in del rio league are divisions 1 and 2 and pioneer is in d4 wow yet they have to play in the same league against schools with 3 times the amout of kids pioneer can come in third in league and have a better chance to make it deep in the playoffs if they can qualify they can finally compete with those teams too bad the del rio league champ will most likely lose early in the playoff rounds of d1 or d2 hopefully the del rio league will have some parity in basketball this year looks phs and whs will give cal la serna and santa fe a run for the money.... just a funny stat pioneer has split wit cal in basketball every year for the last 5 or 6 years

Basketball playoff groupings are now based on enrollement and comptetive equity.

One reason I like it is that several teams from the same league have the chance to win championships.

What a game by SF and CAL!!! I dont want to take anything away from this game like CAL FANS are tryin to do, both teams played great and it just came down to whoever made the big plays at the end of the game. and to think SF did without giving the ball to Turner on that last drive. QB Flores once again showed heart and the ability to make plays to lead to the Cheifs to that final score, and a great job to the Oline for blocking and the receivers making plays!

here are this weeks cif polls
maybe if LS beats CAL they will get some respect, ther are 3 one loss teams above them. That will be an awesome game bc not only does a possible share of league title up for grabs but also alot of pride is always a factor in this RIVALRY GAME.

Cal vs. La Serna

La Serna I guess is going to wear black jerseys for the game, idk if pants also?! can i get a verification on what they are wearing?! and their fans are also supposed to wear black...ohh and i heard they are gonna turn off the lights at one point for some reason to make it look like a cemetery, idk?! thats whaaatt i heard...

While CAL is wearing their normal white away jersey and pants, and their fans are also supposed to wear white...

gonna be a great game atmosphere..sorta reminds of the usc vs ucla basketball game played at usc, when the team and fans wore black..blackout..they probably got the idea from that...good luck to both teams :) gonna be fun to watch..Get there early! packed house for sureee

Del Rio League Fan for Life said:

LS will expose your small db's and spread the field which will allow Burke to run or throw. El Rancho, Whittier both tried to drop db's back and he ran for over 60 yards in both games. The passsing will allow Lazano and Gluck to run. LS has stoppped the run every game and having Gluck back will just make it more diffucult. Limit the turnovers and spread the field to allow LS's bigger receivers vs Cal's smaller db's that is the mismatch. Cal runs 80% percent of the time and when they throw 80% of their passes go to the running backs and the tight end. No deep threat just underneath routes and flats. The last time they faced a team that can throw it was Pacifica. It will be fun to watch. Good Luck to Both teams.

Tyler Durden said:

Yo Murray, thanks for your opinion and it is duly noted. Maybe I should have been more coddling like others in here in say that CAL failed to seal the deal but had that been SF that blew a 17-0 half time lead it would be the SF haters in here screaming CHOKE. After having the down year SF had last year I think some of those DRL fans felt their teams would walk all over SF this year but as it stands SF has aligned itself for yet another DRL title should they take care of business these last 2 weeks of the regular season. Pioneer will pull no punches in trying to knock off SF but I just don’t think they have the horses to go toe to toe for 4 quarters and the La Serna game should be another barn burner as they look pretty impressive on both sides of the ball this year.

And while Turner is an extra special player I wouldn’t be so quick to claim him the difference in the game. While there is no denying he had an impact let’s not discount the second half adjustments the SF coaching staff made. I personally sat there in the stands watching them all huddled up as the team went off at the half and thought they seemed completely dumfounded and lost. Luckily they surprised me. And to their defense which held CAL to 3 points in the second half. Knowing Turned I’m sure he’d be the first to call it a total team win.

Roger Murray Author Profile Page said:

Yo, Tyler Durden: Saying Cal choked is a bit harsh. Santa Fe capitalized (read executed) when presented with opportunities, which is a plus for the Chiefs and not necessarily a minus for the Condors. The difference in the game was Chiefs RB Aaron Turner. Take him out of the equation, and the rest of the game was pretty even. And to squash two rumors: One of the two defenders involved in the winning touchdown did not catch the ball and have it taken away by Cameron Oliver. Oliver made an outstanding catch of a ball thrown right where it had to be thrown by QB Alex Flores. Also, the officials did not influence the outcome. Coach Jim Arnold bottom lines it by saying, "They didn't take anything away from us. We had our chances. Credit Santa Fe."

WTF??
Ok might as well not play montbello then you'll really avoid anything...
well when i played at schurr, everytime we played montebello we always congratulated each other and yet nothing ever happened. We were always thaught to respect each other, we let the pads and scoreboard do the talking. From what i saw at the game and from what i heard from the players, montebello started the brawl even after the brawl as the players were walking towards the goal line they started flipping off our fans... it was pretty ridiculous. Even their own fans started jumping in...

Tyler Durden said:

what iffff?

What makes you so sure Cal will beat LS and then for LS to turn around and beat SF? First of all Cal had their chances with SF and choked and LS wont be any easier. And if you think Cal is better the LS and SF was better then Cal I like SF's chances versus LS.

A kink in Cal’s armor was exposed last Friday night and I’m sure La Serna is chomping at the bit to expose it some more.

ohhh uhh Cal will beat La Serna this week and Whittier the next week...Santa Fe beats Pioneer...La Serna beats Santa Fe the next week...
= three way tie for 1st in Del Rio League...if this crazy, but yet possible scenario occurs, what would happen? what would determine the number 1, 2,& 3 seeds for the playoffs?...
what if?

i dont believe im the only one thinking of this scenario....

LOL @ St. Paul. Thinking they are all that and a bag of chips until they play with bigger dogs in the yard. Get a life St. Paul parents. Your team stinks.

Big Oso said:

Cal fans,
We got beat by a very good football there is no shame in that. So quit making excuses! We had plenty of opportunities to seal the deal. If you thought Santa Fe was going to play dead during the second half you don't know football. They made good adjustments and stopped the Cal run, forcing us to pass. My only question was why not go for the touchdown when on the Santa Fe two yard line? Sometimes you have to believe in your kids and will the ball over the goal line. With a team like Santa Fe you have to cut the head from the Monster to make sure its dead! The Cal defense played great considering they were left hanging to fend for themselves in the second half. Our inability to have a balanced offense finally caught up to us. Our kids did not give up and am looking forward to seeing how they rebound. All is not lost. Let's finish the season on a positive note and hope we see Santa Fe again. I believe in our young men and feel Greg Perea will be they key to our success. Remember what the late great Woody Hayes said "Anything that comes easy aint worth a dime". Go Condors!

Condor Fan said:

Cal Fan I couldn't agree more. We shot ourselves in the foot, all the penalties, fumbles and what have you. Not to mention the passes that should have been picked...we lost. Look yourselves in the mirror. Let's get it together.

cal will beat sf by atleast 21 pts

Would you like a little sauce to go with that crow??????

WTF said:

How did the Schurr and Montebello coaches not see this coming? They should have seen what was going too happened and prevented it. I know a couple of years ago when CAL beat SF (on the field) the SF staff kept their team on the sidelines not allowing them to meet at midfield to shake hands. The coaches themselves went to midfield to congratulate CAL. SF was called many things in these blogs for that but it would have been better that what happened to those two teams. What a sad thing to happen between both programs. Hopefully no one was injured.

Cal Fan said:

Attention all Cal Fans. WE lost the game, not the refs. Give the credit to SF & blame our inability to seal the deal. It's one loss Condors, not the end. Cal practice hard, LS will be ready & would like nothing more than to beat you. Don't let that happen!

First and goal on the 5 yard line and CAL was denied having to settle for a field goal. You were stopped by an aggressive SF defense....not the refs. CAL could not seal the victory..........DEAL WITH IT!!!!!!

What a shame some of you have had to belittle such a good game by both teams. Maybe you can somehow find a way for SF to have to forfeit the game. Sorry you cant....SF is legit!!!!!!!

It's easy to say it was the refs fault, bottom line Santa Fe shut down Cal second half.Despite what people say it was one hell of a game.

BOOO HOOOO!!!! Cal High needs to quit whining!!!!! EVERYONE has been victims of wrong calls...so build a bridge and get over it. Cal High lost and they need to accept it. You guys are just mad because you are 7-1, not 8-0. It must be hard to accept that the fact that Santa Fe was the better team that night. You never know, you may have to accept another loss next Friday!! Those Lancers are pretty damn good this year!! GO LANCERS!!!!! Stop hatin' and be prepared, because it's not over yet.

Cal High and santa fe played a good game. Santa Fe had a lot of help from the zebras. Cal should have won easily if it wasnt for those calls.
