Winter sports are on the scene

| | Comments (22) |

The area still has a football program alive in the CIF playoffs, but the winter sports - boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, girls water polo and wrestling - are starting and deserve some acknowledgment.

This doesn't mean football is ending on this blog, but there's room for everyone here. It's doubtful the other sports can/will match football's intensity, but the opportunity for posting thoughts and opinions clearly is encouraged.

La Habra's versatile Jordan Sachs opened the season with a 47-point performance in the Highlanders' first game. Has anyone seen anybody top that?

La Mirada's 6-8 center/forward Derrick Williams, who recently signed with USC, will be in action Friday night when the Matadores travel to play St. John Bosco. Game time 7.

The Forum is open. Have at it.

Im sorry in the stands...what division does SP play in??? Mary Star of the Sea??? All seniors on the LM team have ALSO been together for 3 years. SP has a nice lil guard on their team, but so did SJB and he had his moments but was no factor in the end. LM has it's share of rings also SP so relax...again what division does LM basketball play in??? When you get to semi-finals and have to face a Demar Derozan Compton, and lose by 6, and then a DIVISION 1AA CHAMP Jordan Hamilton's Dominguez and drop it by a few...then talk to me about playoffs. Like all have said, LM and LH would DOMINATE SP.

Artesia had a huge fallout with their basketball program-players and coaches. In the stands; you’re not too sharp but that’s expected right? LM and LB would destroy SP!!! Once you kick the barn door down if you could, you’re see the two horses are gone to the championships.

To Suburban League Fan,

Artesia OVER RATED. Handled easily by the Swordsmen in first game of Cantwell Tournament.
This SP team has been playing together for 3 years under Coach Miller. First year, one win away from playoffs. Second year, one win away from the FINALS. This year we are kicking the darn door in and taking the PRIZE. Another RING to add the the many already at SP. Where are yours LM??

LM said:

Wilson beats La Mirada 62 to 54, but Derrick Williams had 34 points and nine boards six dunks, He was double and triple all night, great game.

Mr. Murray and Mr. Campa - football is over. What about some basketball coverage?

There is some great basketball being played over at the Cantwell Tournament and the area being represented by several teams and all we get in the paper is some box scores.

If I have to read about another soccer game........

Congratuulations to Jordan Sachs of La Habra- he just signed a letter of intent to play Basketball at Westmont College- he is averaging 32 points per game in leading his tem so far this year- good luck Jordan!

I agree with you Suburban League Fan on St. Paul!!!!

St. Paul juss always wants to get mentioned eventhough they dont play anyone good on their schedule!!!!

Go check out the REAl big boy area teams play @ El Rancho's Blue Pride Classic in Friday's Semi-finals and Saturday for the Championship!!!

Montebello,La Mirada,La Habra!!!!

Have the All-DRL football teams been announced yet???

hey murray why not posting the All League Players either on the internet or in the paper.

Good one St. Paul alum...Sorry but get by Montebello, Artesia, and Amat, then we'll see. I think you better watch LM before you head to the bank. They're playing @ The El Rancho Tourney this week. LM destroyed HP and Warren. They play Santa Fe on thursday, come and check them out. Not sure when LH plays, but they'll be more than a handfull for SP.

I know La Mirada and La Habra get much of the well-deserved attention, but I just though I would mention St. Paul and the high hopes for this year..
Steven Saenz and Willie Duff are probably two of the most underrated players in the area.
Saenz was an All-League and All-CIF player last year, yet WDN failed to put him on the All-Area squad. What a shame.
Also, Jacob Garcia and Adrian Flores look much improved after successful seasons last year.
And guard, Kevin Garcia, will make an impact after a successful football season.
Look out for the Swordsmen!

I agree with Anonymous that Cal. will be a strong opponent for La Serna, but La Sera's preseason schedule is brutal facing Mayfair, Walnut, Serrano, Santa Ana Valley, and Granite Hills will only prepare them for League and CIF just like La Habra Football played San Clem. and Los Al. Amanda Broussard put together a great schedule for this team.

The Cal La Serna will be a great game with Cal's defense and La Serna's strike anywhere offense and Iron Curtain defense (Godinez, Quijada, Garwacki, and Stanovich) AKA "The Fearsom Foursom"

SP Alum said:

???,Suburban League Fan; Dont leave out St Paul, Swordsmen will give any one of those teams a run for their money. You all can bank on that.

??? said:

Oh no doubt that La Mirada And La Habra are the 2 best teams in the Area followed by Montebello!!!!

Derrick Williams is the best player ive seen in years!!!
he can score and rebound but also play some "D"
and thats what counts!!!

Jordan Sachs is pretty good, he can score as well!!

Michael Carabes of Montebello is a good player with a great shooting touch!!!

Suburban League Fan said:

Sure Montebello will wipe up every team in DRL, Angulo has a nice team, with a great future. Glad to see young big developing. If you want to get them in the mix with the big boys of the area, La Habra would definetly be a big challenge for the Oilers. Don't think they would be ready for Sachs and company. I'm not even gonna put them in the same breath with LM. LM would destroy Montebello. Too big, too strong, too fast. I'm tired of hearing everyone talk about LM is just an offensive team, LM went into bosco and shut down a team that would handle Montebello quite easily, with there defense. This year's LM team is for real. I encourage all local fans to come out and watch the reigning area MVP, Div 1AA first team, McDonalds All American hopeful, USC signee Derrick Williams. There hasn't been a talent like this in the area since Whittier High Grad and current Cal State Dominguez Starting PG Mike Hernandez. The LM boys have there eyes set on league champs...then on to state champs.

wonder who'll win the del rio league in basketball??

1 thing 4sure is that montebello will mop up every team in the del rio league!!!

Santa fe faculty said:

Santa Fe is not looking very well in the early going. They suffered a defeat to Montebello by 39 points. The defending del rio league champions dont look like they're going to repeat this year. With 1st team all league guard, Frank Corona and Del Rio league MVP, Maurice Cole graduating, they seem to have no chance at all to defend their title.

James said:

47 points, that is amazing. Hes already made 1st team all area im sure he will make it again.

Pioneer Parent said:

That's amazing 47 points, the most I've ever seen was in the 2000 season when SG Jesse Serrato from Pioneer had 48 points with 11 (3's), and then followed it up with a 46 point game against El Rancho.

SF said:

SF so the other sports at SF aren't real? Our wrestling team mates play football and other sports/get a grip St Paul talks like that, that's not us. Public schools rule always.

SF said:

Good luck to Santa Fe Wrestling ... The true sport of the school ...

Girls soccer will be very interesting to watch this year. La Serna is know as the area elite but Cal looks like they will have the talent to match La Serna this year. We will see. With the loss of Dolbin and Reed, La Serna will have to regroup but they always do. They have a very good JV team this year and also have a strong freshman class coming in next year.
