On rumors, rants and reasons ...

Your opinions are greatly appreciated, but ...

Why are so many performance evaluations of high school coaches based
upon how many CIF championships their program has won? Even worse, teams that get to the finals but don't win, forget 'em! Teams that have
CIF titles, good for them. But not having a championship ring does not
mean that a coach or his program is not worthy of positive
acknowledgement. A committment to working hard in practice and playing
hard in games should be the basis for all evaluations, regardless of the
event's outcome and not influenced by personal agendas. .....

Truth be told, the area is blessed with many outstanding coaches, some
of whom are being unjustly vilified for things such as not winning
enough, or not using the right players, or not winning big enough, and of
course, the personal agenda thing. Sometimes, it must be considered that
the other team just had better players who performed better. ....

When and where has it been announced that wherever recently removed St.
Paul football coach Pete Gonzalez lands with a new job his staff will
land there, too? ....

About where St. Paul's outstanding defensive coordinator Gilbert Jimenez
will wind up, has anyone considered that his real passion is basketball?
It is said by those in a position to know that as good as he is in
football, he is even better in basketball. ....

High on the list of enticing football coaching openings is South El
Monte's. Has it been made public why head coach Erick Escamilla decided
to leave? His will be a tough act to follow. ....

Coaches should be rated on how good the program was before they took over, how good the program did under their guidance, and what happened after they left.

Quality coaches keep good programs good or improve them, or they improve non successful (non winning) progams.

Look at La Habra. Those guys took over a perennial 3 and 7 type of program. They won big pretty quickly.

Now they have the pleasure of retaining that very high quality program with open enrollement in the district and the "heritage program" in which quality football players can use to get into the school if they are outside the district.

Mazzotta and his staff deserve this advantage because of the great job they did in those early years with the 2 and 8 or 3 and 7 types of players

One huge question about coaching though. Why do unsuccessful coaches hang on so long? For years, never getting the potential out of their players. I am thinking of a Del Rio league football coach and a del rio league baseball coach.

GIVE SOMEONE ELSE A CHANCE FOR THE SAKE OF THE STUDENT ATHLETES. WINNING (HOW YOU BECAME A WINNER) CAN TEACH A STUDENT PLENTY!

Come on. Give experienced varsity basketball coaches a little respect. How could you suggest Coach Jimenez is better at coaching basketball? Has he ever coached varsity basketball? Sure, he is a heck of a defensive coordinator. Do you have any proof, other than bloggers, of Coach Jimenez being a good basketball coach?

Murray what happen to Swordsmen Dad’s comment on seniors from St. Paul receiving a lot of offers. SP Dad you put the names out there LoL. Maybe as you say there needs to be a new legacy, SP Dad, I say the legacy of truth and not tell the kids what they would love to hear. mr. Big from SP believes in only the coach or him can help any student to USC,UCLA or LSU, or any where if you do what he says and only work hard enough LoL.

Yo, Red Bird: It would appear, at least for the moment, that Lauren Yao, Cantwell's super infielder, will be the only Cardinal who signed. Both Taylor and Tillman reportredly are experiencing problems with paperwork and communication between the Cantwell office and prospective colleges.

Teams all have their own chacter, which includes the coach and his/her coaching staff. A good coach might not have the horses year in and out, but he/she will always field competitive teams because they teach the skills well. Great coaches not only are always competitive, they attract other coaches, good players who go to school because of the coach, and truly build a program and program pride from the freshman year. Often these guys are tough to play for, but it is a deep experience for the kids. This ain't rec ball.

Good luck to St. Paul and all the area schools. There is high quality in athletics (watch out for SP and LS in the upcoming baseball season)in the area. Thanks to the kids and coaches.

Hey Roger, with Jeff Taylor and Kimble Tillman from Cantwell getting serious D-1 (football)looks let's not forget to mention that senior Lauren Yao signed her letter of intent with Penn State University to play softball. That's three kids from Cantwell who will sign D-1 athletic scholarships in one year. Cantwell has never been looked at as an athletic powerhouse but the last few years has seen an positive upswing in talent at all athletic levels. Both boys and girls basketball teams this year are having good seasons with the girls potentially challenging for a Div 5 championship.

Can we put Signing Day into perspective. It is a nationally recognized day for Seniors to sign with there future colleges. It does not mean that offers stop. Just because players aren't on ESPN watch or your local newspaper Sports front page, doesnt mean they dont have offers. In fact there are some who receive offers after the Official Signing Day has come and gone. So how about we applaude those who get the limelight of Signing Day and then applaude again to those who get to sign later on down the line. Hopefully this paper will print those also, no matter what school they are from. Good Luck Class Of 2009.

A game for 3rd or 4th or who really cares. Good one Murray. Whats a matter you had to pay for your hot dog and coke, so now your shunning SP Boys BB.

Some positive things going on at St.Paul are the some of the seniors receiving offers. Osagie Odiase has gotten offers from SJSU, Idaho, and Northern Ill. I heard that SP linebacker David Flores (08) will probably sign with Cal Berkley. Mike Demery and Mario Obando are also guys that should have offers to the next level. I recently talked to Pete and he said Andrew Canales, former QB, also has some opportunties. Not everything is so bad. I love St. Paul and the next coach will be another positive addition to the legacy.

On a lighter note, with signing day approaching La Habra junior running back Joshua Quezada has received his first offer to play at the next level. Quezada has a whole year left to play and receive several other looks.

When it comes to rumors and rants, verbal rocks, there isn’t a blogger and I mean from any school or class, geographic location without a rock in their hand. Now there are those who throw a rock and hide their hand. And those who cry foul seem to throw the most rocks. If you dish it out you better be ready to receive. Every comment desires a response, whether you or we agree or not, it’s all opinion. Murray provides a format for all to express their opinion. It’s great!! I agree there are some lines that bloggers should not cross, but that’s up to the owner of this blog site.

Murray anyone’s evaluation of a High School coach is integrity; it is at the top of the list, and wanting to help kids to be their best as humans. Football is great but it’s small in comparison to the kid’s future. Now that said commitment and hard work, just like the coach is going to ask of his kids, he has to have the same qualities. A huge love for the game. This is just my opinion the coaches from St. Paul don’t match up

Good comments, Mr. Murray. Everyone needs to take a deep breath and get the inappropriate, taunting comments under control. Parents and athletes have many options in the greater Whittier area to enjoy sports. We need to support these coaches and students. I just hate to read personal comments regarding young athletes. It crosses good taste too often. And, why are there so many SP haters? So much ranting from people who do not walk our campus, just passing old, tired gossip. My two kids are very happy there.
