St. Paul football coaching position officially up for grabs

| | Comments (51) |

What has been bandied about intensely over the past two weeks became official Friday when Pete Gonzalez met with St. Paul principal Lori Barr and athletic director Marc Hernandez and informed them he had decided not to resign his position as the Swordsmen's head football coach.
Ms. Barr then took the alternative and relieved Gonzalez from his coaching responsibilities.
Late Monday afternoon, Hernandez faxed a release announcing the final action and informing that St. Paul would begin immediately a search for Gonzalez's replacement.
The release was short and to the point and included a one-line sentence explaining that this has been a confidential matter and no further details will be discussed.
Ms. Barr has been unavailable for comment.

Anybody else have the feeling this isn't over ... ?

Wow if this is Aubrey from SP? Maybe he should have stood at Diamond Bar because they provide a much better education. Are they (SP) teaching, instructing or pointing towards books that might help their students? Mrs. Barr has her work cut out for her.

Just in case you didn't read the article from Miguel Melendez on Dec. 9

If Rosemead wins Saturday night, does that mean ....

During the first half of last week's Rosemead-Monrovia game, I walked the home sidelines keeping stats. During halftime, I headed over to the visitors side and talked with a few people before the second half got underway.
Some quick observations:
For one, there were WAY too many people on Rosemead's sideline. Among the masses there I saw three Schurr football players, some assistants from San Gabriel and Alhambra and way too many fans that needed to be in their seats.
Walking the sideline was also St. Paul head football coach Pete Gonzalez. But what struck me as odd was St. Paul defensive coordinator Gil Jimenez on the rise with a Rosemead assistant coach. Jimenez was yelling down plays to the Panthers D-coordinator. I, along with my colleague Andrew J. Campa, saw Jimenez relay plays for the better part of the second half. Others from the Mid-Valley News also saw him and it struck them as odd, too. We wondered if there was some sort of CIF rule barring coaches from other teams helping out. We couldn't think of one but brought up whether it was unethical. It's one thing for a former coach walking the sideline to yell out plays but it's another thing when a coach is up on the high-rise just short of putting on headphones. So if Rosemead wins does that mean St. Paul gets credit for the win, too? That was the initial thought when I found out Jimenez was a coach at St. Paul, but then the Mid-Valley News guys and I figured Jimenez was probably an old friend of Koffler.
I brought up the subject with Rosemead coach Matt Koffler earlier this morning. Turns out Jimenez was part of Rosemead's 1982 championship-winning team, the lone year the Panthers won a CIF football title. As an alumni, Jimenez simply was helping out the school where he once played. Well, that explains it, I guess.

We are backing our new principal. We've spent time with her and she has a great vision for our school and as alums and parents now, we will support her. It's not easy being a small school that receives zero funding from California. There will always be challenges and tough decisions, but being principal is not a popularity contest. Our vote would definitely be to bring in a St. Paul grad as the new coach. Hey, and lets remember these coaches are family men. Don't pass judgement where all can read it. Good luck to all of them in their new endeavors.

I watched the football play several times the past 3 seasons and I always felt they played hard, tough and I was proud of them.

I hope Ms. Barr brings in an alumni but whatever she does, it will be good for the school. The community is blessed to have Ms Barr and the staff who works at SPHS.

As for the rumors and off-color remarks made about people's private lifes, YOU PEOPLE NEED TO HAVE MORE CLASS AND REMEMBER INNOCENT FAMILY AND FRIENDS DESEVE BETTER.

Coach G,,,,,thanks for your dedication and another CIF ring.

All of you SP people who are on the inside know that the firing of Coach Pete had nothing to do with football! So all of you St. Paul haters who are so jealous and hateful and ready to talk nonsense about a tainted title, cheating, and recruiting get over yourselves and give credit where credit is due! Aubrey Haynes didn't bring the title to St. Paul all by himself, although he did play a big part. If you were at every game then you can talk, but I know you were not, so keep your hate to yourself. Every player on that team brought that long overdue championship to St. Paul!!! The effort of the defense at every game was relentless! As a team they never gave up! Best wishes to Coach Pete, Coach Jimenez and the rest of coaching staff. Everyone makes mistakes, nobody is perfect. Perhaps Ms. Barr could have handled this differently, perhaps she should have handled this differently. It was a private matter and nobody's business, but she made it everyone's business!

The reason I came up with David Flores is because of the positive article in the WDN that had him quoted as saying he never worked hard in school until he was influenced to work hard at SP. I have no problem with a family deciding to send their kids to a private school for any reason.

Despite speculation, Pete will end up at ELAC, Jimenez is headed to Mater Dei, Casey Morales who is the head baseball coach is going to stay as just a baseball coach. I have been a SPHS supporter for over 25 years and Lori Barr is going to bring back Coach Ancich for three years but with a successor as the assistant head coach. The assistant Heach coach looks to be Servite head coach Troy Thomas who seems to be under the microscope at Servite due to lack of any CIF titles. Lori Barr seems to have a connection with Thomas. Marijon Ancich will be the "head coach" and Thomas will run the program. Thomas will bring with him the Crespi/Servite philosophy to SPHS, which will work out tremendously because the Willigs recently proposed a huge donation to the program if Troy Thomas, family friend is hired. That is the INSIDE SCOOP from a SPHS insider.

Last time I checked, I got myself into college. Not the coaching staff. What are you talking about? If a school wants a kid they will get him. A coach can't wish for a scholarship, he can only hope. So wake up and smell the whatever.....Also, that coach at Diamond Ranch is a joke. His best player last year was Sermons. And yes, he is a transfer. What a giant hypocrite.

PAUL will be come a better academic, athletic, Catholic, and college prep institution when decisions like these are made. Kudos to Ms. Barr. Continue to improve our school for our children.

I can’t believe how ridiculous so many of you sound. In regards to transfers all the good programs have transfers, that’s how they remain so good year after year. They will say they don’t recruit but they do. In many cases they recruit the in coming freshmen so they don’t have to get a kid to transfer.

Every December every high school football player evaluates his situation.
Will I start next year, will I be featured, will this coming season give me the opportunity to be get a scholarship are all questions the players and their parents must ask themselves. If your kid has the talent to get a scholarship but it may not happen because the player ahead of you is better ( no playing time), or the player is the coach’s nephew, or the football program doesn’t get looks from scouts should you just stay “BECAUSE IT’S RIGHT TO TRANSFER”?

For all those against transfers, have you ever left one job for another because you thought it was a better opportunity for you and your family, well then you were a transfer too?

Goog luck to them all where ever they end up, hopefully they can stay together.

FanintheStands, you're tired of hearing about transfers, Well i'm tired of hearing from SP people that think they know what's going on. The Highlanders are not hiding from you and I'm sure the other schools you mentioned are not hiding from you either. You're not as good as you think you are. Schools have committments to play other teams on their schedule and usually honor those.

Rosales said:

You don’t believe in (scrupulous) ethics, it’s obtrusive. In your mind a fraudulent CIF ring is auspicious, but it is a transgression!!! Now you bring up David Flores, so without SP’s coaches him David Flores would not be enrolled at a JC college? Mr. Faninthe stands your recruiting here on this blog, Ms. Barr bring your boy!!!! Your boy! And improve our school for a championship, are you nuts?

FanintheStands said:

I'm tired of hearing people cry about transfers. It would not be fair if St. Paul was in the DRL but they are not. All the teams in their league are private and they all have transfers. If you don't think it's fair, be like La Habra, Santa Fe, Cal Hi and La Serna who turn down (HIDE) non league games against SP every year. My hats off to El Rancho, La Mirada and Pioneer. They challenge their kids by taking on a program like SP. SP takes on the likes of Servite, Bishop Amat, Notre Dame, and Bosco year in and year out. Who knows? SP could of played a week non league schedule and ended up 8-2 and earned a spot on the Whittier Daily News top 5???. I hope Ms Barr hires a qualified coaching staff that works as hard as the Gonzalez staff. I was not personally a big fan of the staff but I can't argue the fact that they worked hard and put the kids in a position to win each week. The scouting reports were great. Also my son admires and respects all his coaches. No matter what anyone says those coaches loved their players and did what they could for their boys. Future D-1 David Flores as an example. Good luck coaches. As for next year the new coach better not screw it up. The football team has the talent to bring back a CIF championship in 09. Ms Barr if you believe in your improving the school bring your boy.

Fact not Fiction

The story comes out of the SGV Tribune. A typical St. Paul response, "If it is true". Your antics over the years are catching up to you, the implosion is almost complete. Nobody wants to play you & your reputation is what your school has created. A "Win at all costs" attitude doesn't earn respect within the community. Morals, clean play, & playing by the rules does. Ms Barr is the best thing that has happened to your cheating program, she will have to weed out the garbage before she can restore whatever tradition you may think you have. The question is whether she will be allowed to complete the process, I doubt it.

just a story? said:

The big “Question “if this long story is true or even part true, how does SP get away with it? Why doesn’t or why didn’t the CIF people do something? Don’t they (CIF) set the rules? So they should enforce the rules. This story isn’t true or someone has deep pockets at the controls.

BigUNK,

What do you know about SP? I played on the title team and yes we brought it home after 28 years. We all understand ur dislike for the coaching staff. But, our coach helped us win a title. I did not ever hear him say how great he was. He always used the term "we or us" . Reading your post makes me realize you have no idea about anything.
Regarding Aubrey Hayes, people say he was recruited. But no one made him come to SP . He did it on his own. His parents are very nice people that don't just make silly judgements. Evident by his CIF ring and accolades. All those people that are crying ,sour grapes! Don't blame the coaching staff for a kid transfering blame the kid. If he was happy were he was at he would of stayed.
Coach Gonzales is gone now. He did what every coach want's to do every year. Win a title. Love him or hate him , you can never take that away from him. In 60 years of football at SP only two coaches have won titles. Coach Gonzales and Coach Ancich. Pretty good company.
Coach Gonzales, just wanted to say thanks for all the hard work. You taught us how to be disciplined and to never give up. In 30 years I will be telling my children how we won the title and that u were our coach! Thanks....2008 seniors

From a Fred Robeldo interview with Roddy Layton, coach at Diamond Ranch:

We had a long discussion about a lot of things. I started to ask about the firing of St. Paul coach Pete Gonzalez, but all Layton could talk about was running back Aubrey Haynes, who left Diamond Ranch his senior year for St. Paul and led them to a CIF divisional title in 2007.

"That's a sore subject with me. They recruited Aubrey. I know it and they know it and I don't care if you write it. I reported it to CIF and nothing happened. They were Emailing him through MySpace, at games, whatever. That's a game I would love to play too. It's personal. What really bothers me is they didn't help him get to college. That's what we're here for. He's a year out of school and is back contacting me to help him go somewhere. That's a shame. It's one thing to steal players, but our job as coaches is to do everything possible to get our players to college. Not all players get scholarships, but they can all go to college. I'm not mad at Aubrey, he's a good kid, and I will do what I can to help him."

What do you mean vacant spot at Rosemead H.S.? When did Koffler leave? And yes he is also shady, recruited his own junior quarterback at RHS to come with him to Artesia, I believe. He then was relieved from his duties at Artesia before coming back to RHS. Perfect example of star players setting the academic bar very low. T. Sumler, probably one the the best backs San Gabriel Valley has had, yet does not have the grades to go to a 4 year college, a product of "special" coach Koffler. Come on who states, "I went to USC to become a high school coach." Maybe this was taken out of context back when he said it in the SGV Tribune.

Football: Salesian hires Hiatt as coach
Hoping to revive a program that struggled the last two years, Salesian has hired James Roddy Hiatt as its new football coach, Principal Samuel Robles announced.

Hiatt has more than 30 years of coaching experience and previously served as the head coach at East Los Angeles College and Exeter High. He was also defensive coordinator at Mesa State College and El Rancho, Artesia and Pius X high schools.

David Cervantes will be the Mustangs' new defensive coordinator and Chuck Willig will serve as the offensive coordinator.

Salesian finished 1-9 overall and 0-4 in the Santa Fe League in 2008 under Coach Chris Griego, who was relieved of his duties after the season. The Mustangs lost their last seven games, including a 21-19 defeat against St. Monica that allowed the Mariners to end a 37-game losing streak that was the longest in California.

Griego concluded his three-year tenure at Salesian with an 11-20 record after going 7-4 and winning a league title in his first season.

pretty neat trick to polish up your image at the right time with a new principal who doesn't really know mr. hernandez. lorenzello[sp?]knew herandez as a coach before he became the a.d. and hernandez knew this was an opportune moment to get his agenda in so he turns in people for doing same things he did but never got tied to.

truth is, this goes on in many schools.public and private.

This is a very cloudy day in the St. Paul community. We don’t really know what happened but with all the rumors flying around and multiple parents talking about it at our St. Paul’s banquet weeks ago, it was just a matter of time that this rumor came true. Coach Pete is a good guy for not resigning but to make a firm decision to stick it out and still be there for these boys. This statement says a lot for what kind of character he brings to SPHS. I know there are a couple of coaches that need to be disciplined or given the axe.

No individual coach is bigger then St. Paul football program.
