Just stuff, and not all football ...
How about that Whittier girls water polo victory over Harvard/Westlake.
20-19, in three overtimes. Has to be the best game of the season.
More on that later. Unfortunately, the Cardinals' season ended Friday
with an 11-7 loss to Riverside Poly. ...
In other area results in the sport, La Habra reaches the CIF semifinal for the third consecutive year after defeating Upland, 6-4, in a Div. V quarterfinal today. The
Highlanders will play Arlington at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Woolett
Center in Irvine. ...
No word yet on La Serna-Corona Santiago D-III quarterfinal played today.

And Montebello will host Royal in A Div. II quarterfinal at 4 p.m. today at
Commerce Aquatorium. The Oilers won their opener, 15-5, over Mission
Viejo Thursday. ...
El Rancho running back Marcus Galan signs a letter of intent with the
University of Minnesota, Crookston during a ceremony at the school this
morning. Coach Rick Zepeda put some time and effort for a good cause in
this one. "When you're 2-8 (overall) and 0-5 (league), a lot of
recruiters don't come calling," Zepeda said. It sounds like a perfect
match for both signer and signee. ...
A tough, tough. tough loss for Whittier in their Division II-AA girls
basketball first-round playoff game Thursday. A battle throughout to
stay close and find a way to win it at the end, looked they would have
to settle for a tie and try to win it in overtime, and then lightning
struck in the form of Erin Ruiz's game winning shot from behind midcourt
at the regulation-time buzzer. ...

Roger: I try not to comment to you, but.
I look at the paper this morning and there you go. Whittier High School Softball NUMBER 1 in the area, ranked above Powerhouses La Mirada and La Serna.
When is the last time Whittier has made the Playoffs? When is the last time Whittier Softball has won a CIF game? Maybe as long as the baseball team; probably 10 to 15 years, but maybe longer.
You speak of a coach. She has done a good job, but come on, they have not even made the playoffs and now # 1.
Well I have laughed at your ratings before. You sometimes jump on the bandwagon like with Pete Gonzalez presently and long ago it was Ramon Juarez.
Gary Martinez and Tony Hernandez also played at La Verne.
Brandon Bejarano got a scholarship to San Diego State in 1990. He played with Marshall Faulk.
Jim Arellanes went to Northern Arizona, redshirted, then played two years at LA Valley College, before transferring to Fresno State. In his junior year he was Top 10 in the nation in QB rating. I believe he didnt play as much his senior season after he got hurt in the beginning of the UCLA game.
A.J. Toscano will be the starting Quarterback at Charleston Southern. He will be playing against the Florida Gators in early September.
I am glad to see Marcus getting an offer like this. A free college education, you just cant beat that. I wonder had he stayed at St. Paul, would Pete Gonzalez tried to promote him and get him a scholarship. Given all the drama at St. Paul, I sincerely doubt it.
This is a good lesson to all you Pico kids. You can play at the next level!
Mom of former condor
You have that right. DEREK WILLIAMS IS A "LOCK". He is by far the best basketball player to come out of here lately.
No player in this paper's area can come close to him. And his teams win in the CIF Playoffs. Look what La Mirada has done over the past 3 seasons. And tonight the SEMIS versus Loyola.
He took totally over this year and has had plenty of help in years past (like Kaupang who is hitting 490 with 4 homes at Cypress, Josh Robbins who is catching plenty of passes at Cerritos, and Siemens who is playing baseball at Cal Baptist).
Boy, La Mirada has put out some excellent athletes lately.
No one can touch Derek
aj toscano is also another ER guy on scholarship playing I-AA in south carolina.... congratulations galan
who cares about football? The best sport is finally here. Make way for Baseball.
Word on the streets... is that Pete Gonzalez got the job at MHS.
Whittier Alum
Whittier high school has shown over the past 10 to 15 years that they do not care about student athletes. They have not tried hard to find coaches that could be successful at whittier. They do what is easy!! Status quo.
NOTHING!! Whittier has athletes, but the school only cares only about academics, and that philosophy is very unfortunate for the student athletes.
Murray
I just got word montebello new football coach is Pete Gonzales. I guess the school wants to win at all cost.
Come on murray lets see how long it takes to put this on the blog.
THE TIME IS 2:23PM
Yo Murray! whats the word on Montebello High Football I know they have been conducting Interview since last week. any word?
Dustin played at Tusculum College in Tenesee.
murray
I just heard that at the boys basketball all league meeting. Whittier head coach Varos nor his asst were there to represent, Whittier or the boys on the team. This guy needs to go. All he cares about is himself, and he is also the AD for Whittier. Whittier needs someone who cares about all the sports, not just varsity basketball, oh I guess he doesn't care about them also. From what I hear none of the other head coaches in basketball like him, don't the people at Whittier see what is going on there. This guy had a asst coach on the team for most of the season, coaching the kids and the asst coach did not have his paper work in to the dist. Their were two other coaches in winter sports who also did not turn in there paper work to the dist. Is the same going on at the other schools.
arrellenas was a junior college transfer from la valley college. He never did make an official regular season roster
Jim Arellanes also was the MVP of the World Bowl which is the Super Bowl in NFL Europe. He also played in the XFL.
Arellanes did attend Northern Arizona first and then trnasferred to Fresno State. I believe Jim was at NAU for 2 seasons. He succeeded Trent Dilford as the Bulldog QB.
Jim played in what was NFL Europe. He played in the NFL on both the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers rosters. He also played in the Arena Football League. He was an assistant coach at El Rancho and now is the Head football coach at Covina's Northview HS.
Great job Marcus! You really made some ER alumni and ER Faithful proud. It makes it an even bigger deal that you were able to accomplish this goal despite the fact that this last year's team wasn't too successful.
ER has not had too many scholarship players since Jim Arellanes, but there have been a few and there have been several non-scholarship players. Here is a list of the ones that I know of.
Mike Quintero- Occidental
Mark Quintero- Occidental
Chris Quintero- Whittier
Jon Baca- La Verne
Ted Aguirre- Cal Lutheran
Jon Uruthia- Kansas (scholarship)
Leonard Alvarez- Whittier
Jamario McClain- OBI Arkansas (scholarship)
Adrian Medrano- La Verne
Dustin Enriquez- Not sure the name of the school, but somewhere in Tennessee (I think scholarship)
Gabriel Garcia- La Verne
Obviously no one has had the success that Arellanes has had, but these people have all represented the Ranch well
Jim Arellanes went to Fresno State and broke every record there, passing and rushing. The passing record was held by Ricky Pope from El Rancho. Jim A. was also a great baseball and basketball player.
Didn't Jim Arrellanes play for the Fresno State Bulldogs.......maybe he went to N Ariziona first?? Either way, great job by Mr Galan and best wishes
Any news on the Montebello coaching situatin?
You might have to go back to 1992 since any ER football player has received a scholarship ride in football. That would be now Northview Head Football Coach Jim Arellanes. His collegiate career was at Northern Arizona.
Galan was an outstanding player on a pretty one dimensional El Rancho squad. Their passing game was sporadic at times and Marcus carried the offensive running game.
To Cal. Hi :
If you had read carefully, I did not suggest Jacob Garcia for MVP. The MVP discussion is regarding the Del Rio League teams. St Paul is in the Camino Real League. I clearly stated that Derrick Williams should be Player of the Year for All-Area, which would include DRL, St Paul, La Habra, Montebello, and La Mirada.
You obviously have not watched Jacob play: he does have handles and is one of the top rebounders for his team. AND if you think that Jacob would not have been a starter for Cal (which was his home school) then you are DELUSIONAL!! Jacob has always been one of the top players in that age bracket--which includes Mike Saldana, Timmy Palomino, and Steven Saenz.
Not much has been written about St Paul basketball this year and I would like to see Jacob's accomplishments acknowledged. Love Michael Arceo, but if Timmy or Jacob were on that Cal team, there wouldn't be a discussion of DRL MVP!
What a great honor to call yourself a Don,when a kid with the maturity and work ethic that Galan has represents our school. This kid has the heart and fortitude to make it at the next level.A lot of credit has to go to Coach Zepeda. I hear he really took an interest in this kid and put his name out there for colleges to see. Congrats to Marcus,Coach Zepeda and the whole El Rancho Dons family.
How about mentioning the fact that Cal High girls soccer won their first game 4 - 1 on Thursday? How come there is no mention of this at all in the paper? La Serna loses and that is mentioned. I understand they were seeded 3rd but how about the fact that we are the only Del Rio girls soccer team left. Well, that's okay because we are used to it. Good luck girls - just do your best and the rest will take care of itself. We are all proud of you!
Just in case you didn't see it in last blog,
CONGRATULATIONS MARCUS GALAN! It's exciting for us to watch someone get the chance to compete at the next level. Your surrounding hometown prep fans will be rooting for you and wishing you well in football, school, and life. GOOD LUCK
Ok former Condor Mom?
Jacob Garcia doesn’t have enough talent to compete with the DRL or La Mirada’s league to be MVP. He’s playing in a much lower level. He lacks speed & quickness, no hops or handles to really compete in the area’s schools. Williams is the man for MVP but there are others that are far above Jacob in the area.
From one Don to another great job; Marcus your game against Bell Gardens “Tenacity “. BG and Montebello were our biggest rivals growing up, because we all played each other in different sports from elementary to high school.
At work I have two lead foreman’s one from BG and one from Montebello on my staff and we have fun with the whole thing, which one wins or loses. But I have to confess it’s always better when we “Dons” win. That’s when I load up both guns with ammo and shoot from both hips. I can bring it. So good luck and do well. ERDON.
How bout mentioning Montebello Hugh School's boys soccer team winning its first round match 1-0 in double overtime.
What a way to really keep a pulse on things, and you say you are a journalist?
MVP for the DRL has also been a political decision among the coaches, so hopefully they choose the most deserving player, instead of the player that most of them will agree to!
BUT for All-Area: Please remember JACOB GARCIA from St Paul! He is a very talented player who at times played the #1-2-3-4-5 spots on his team. In some games, he went from point guard to center. He has range from 3 pointers to put-backs to driving it to the hole! He did an awesome job at rebounding and scoring for his team this season! Jacob is truly a team player who would give up the ball to someone else who had a better shot! No, I'm not his mom--just a huge fan and someone who knows basketball!
Without a doubt, Derrick Williams for All-Area Player of the Year again! Heard he had at 3 dunks in 1st round of playoffs and was dunking all over people in 2nd round! His team is still in the hunt, while Sachs/La Habra is out. Williams is the real deal!!
A big ‘congrats’ to Marcus Galan. All year you showed resilience, no matter what the score was, when the chips were down you displayed evidence of your valor, outstanding courage and tremendous fortitude. We’ll keep you in our prayers.
I got the opportunity to coach Galan his freshman year at SP and wasn't sure what direction he would go once he left. I am very happy for him and wish him the best. Great Job Marcus!
Great news! Proud of the fact that a local kid from Pico Rivera is moving on to play at the next level. Congrats to Marcus and his family, as well as Coach Zepeda, ERHS and staff. Does anyone know the last time a kid from ER has received a scholarship to play football?
Good Job Marcus!!!! PR Don, ER Don Represent!!!
