MVP vs. Player of the Year, it's how you look at them
Some interesting ideas are being expressed concerning who and why should receive the Del Rio League's Most Valuable Player Award.
Keep 'em coming, but consider this: an MVP is someone who, if subtracted from his team, would have the greatest impact on its success, or lack thereof. A Player of the Year is the individual whom, based upon his talent, you would select first if you were building a team.
Coach of the Year should be the individual who gets the most out of his players. This could be the individual whose team wins the championship even if he or she had the most talent with which to work, or perhaps someone whose roster lacked talent or experience and finished well back in the pack.
Any ideas about that one?

basketball iz the baet sport id da world
ok we know that "whitmont" i mean del rio league hasn't lived up to what the former athletes that played in the pass done.I think its just a different era the kids these days are worried more about partying and having fun then concentrating ont sports. If they put half the energy into playing there sports as they do into partyingand other stuff the league will be far more better across the board in all the sports and be more competitive, they would be able to play with the "big boys and girls" in the southern section.I have seen first hand how the schools in the league have gone down talent wise, maybe if the league was better all around, the schools wouldn't loose the key players to private schools. The coaches have a hard enough time working with what they got.So give some credit to coaches that make it,but there should be no way a player on a loosing team should get the mvp.
The league mvp should definitely go to Michael Arceo of California. If you went to Cal Hi you would know that they lost 5 varsity players at the start of the season. One of which was Timmy Palomino who averaged over 10 points last year. The team was completely new except for Arceo, Carter, Perea, and Cruz. the team was over .500 and had some big wins. Michael Arceo i believe stepped up the most for any team in del rio and was clutch in those games. If you look at Cal's losses you will see that Arceo had a bad day shooting wise. Without Arceo, I doubt Cal would have went anywhere.
MIKE ARCEO MVP.
Does anyone know who made All-League for girls basketball in Del Rio League?
HS BB fan
The Whittier Union High School District does not care about student/athletes excelling!! They have not for years. If you do not believe me, look who LS Basketball hired while Coach Lowe was not coaching. (I think he was watching his son play. THAT IS GOOD!!!)
Cal-Hi had an Ancich. They let him go. Santa Fe baseball continues to do zero. They are even losing brothers(or cousins) of past Santa Fe baseball players to St. Paul (Encinas). Their freshmen teams do well, then by the time they get to Varsity, SEE YA!
They are yet another team that has not placed better than 3rd in the last 12-13 years.
Come on principals: help your athletes.

CONGRATS TO THE DEL RIO LEAGUE MVP AND ALL LEAGUE TEAM
YOU ALL MADE IT AN INTERESTING AND UNFORGETTABLE SEASON!
fan of basketball,
I posed the question before and all I heard was crickets....So, again I challenge you to ask yourself (and anybody else out there)
Would it have been fair for Kobe to have won MVP last year over Paul Pearce in the NBA Finals series?
So why would Saldana or Crosby get it over Arceo or a kid from La Serna?
Just a unbiased thought process, here
Now tell me what makes a MVP of the league? Everybody talking about the kid from Cal, the kid from La Serna. And the kid from Pioneer. La Serna came in 1st, Cal got 2nd, and Pioneer finish 3rd.
Looking at the stats the kid from Pioneer has the best stats in league. So why can't a kid from a 3rd place team get it?
Please help me out and understand. And please be nice about it.
Hi Harriet,
I'm sorry about your comments regarding "racism". My kids have never mentioned any mean spirited behavior.
To SP HimandHer, I’m just a mom
Isn’t everyone paying taxes? Even the parents that send their kids to private school; so there’s a choice. You say if you as a parent spend more money you’ll get more lol. If a kid wants to learn, they will learn that’s taught by the parents, every school provides it, education. Now as you say the close environment and faith formation. Then why are the kids from these close environment so racists? The prejudiced runs deep with these schools and the kids aren’t objective? A kid should be taught to think analytically and yes at times critically about the world around them.
Arceo for mvp. No doubt about that.
I do not comment about track or water sports. I do realzize that La Serna and Whittier have had some great (very competitive in CIF, not only league = great)water polo teams and I think both have won CIF Titles in the past 5 to 6 years. Boys and girls.
I stick to what I think I know
With La Serna losing in the first round again, which local teams have had the most success lately?
MOST SUCCESS == CIF PLAYOFFS!! NOT LEAGUE ALONE!!
BEAT TEAMS FROM OTHER COMMUNITIES OF PEOPLE! NOT ONLY YOUR LITTLE LOCAL AREA!!
La Mirada basketball for the past 3 years. They have had some awesome multi-sport athletes. =
Kaupang (basketball and baseball)- cypress baseball 1B
Josh Robbins (basketball and football) cerritos football
Tyler Siemens (bsketball/baseball)cal baptist baseball
Kyle Risser (bskball/ football)
Gillette (basketball and state long jump winner) (LB State) and of course this year's Derek Williams
La mirada baseball to the finals a couple years ago
La Serna baseball to the quarters last year
Of course LA HABRA FOOTBALL!!!!I take that for granted
Calhi football to the Quarterfinals and SEMIS 2 of last 3 years (in football it is easier to move up with only 16 team CIF tournaments, not 32 team playoff brackets like basketball and baseball. In basketball and baseball you have to win 5 games to win a CIF championship. In football you only have to win 4.
Wild card victories not counted because a win allows you to get to Round 1.
Look! Has CALHI BASEBALL made the CIF Quarterfinals the last two years? I think so. If not 2 of last 3 years? 4 CIF VICTORIES!! Sounds good to me. Especially because I hear a heck of alot about LS Basketball, so dominant. Only in league folks. After that it is a no brainer. Cal-hi baseball has snuck up a little and has competed really well at a much HIGHER LEVEL!
ok what an embarresment for the del rio league- all the boys and girls teams out in the first round and most of them got blown out badly. What is it going to take to get the league more competitive?? the league gets weaker every year. is it coaching, lack of talent or both? At least we have some local schools such as La Mirada and La Habra that are doing a great job. and my vote for player of the year-what about a tie?- Williams from LM and Jordan Sachs from LH- CO MVPS-THEY BOTH DESERVE IT!
Preseason Baseball Rankings are out and the local schools are well represented:
La Mirada #9 in D2
Cal High and La Serna are #6 and 7 in D3
St. Paul and Sonora are #3 and 5 in D4
Good luck this season to all teams.
La Serna Fan: i was reading what you wrote on Feb 10th and i would like to thank you for recognizing Joey Marquez from Santa Fe as a deserving player for all league, you state that he is responsible for turning around santa fe's season I couldn't agree with you more. He's only a junior and this is his first year on varsity and with all the obstacles the team had to overcome this year, your recognition of his hard work, leadership and passion for the game of basketball is much appreciated.
Well, I've got to agree with MVP who says that Cal's Michael Arceo should be Del Rio league MVP. He is clearly the leader of the team. I watched alot of games this season and this young man would lead by example and like MVP said the way Arceo goes so does Cal go. Plus, he is a great kid who's humble and really cares about his team. Cal is going to miss him next season but watch out for the up and coming bench players if Barber is not on the sidelines again.
To LS Mom and Dad,
As I said in the previous comment, Coach Lowe does NOT discourage kids from playing other sports. After watching them play, I am sure that he wished some of the other athletes at LS would play basketball because Valdes is the only athlete on the floor. The Del Rio League was weak this year and none of those teams can compete in the CIF playoffs. San Bernardino was terrible but much more athletic than LS. Enjoy the off season, I am sure Lowe will figure out how to win league because he gets alot out of his players, no matter how unathletic they are. Read my previous comments again.
Del Rio League Fan for Life:
Track and Baseball are not the only spring sports at LS. Most of the same kids listed that played another sport and basketball also did swim and one also did track. That is a 3 sport varsity athlete. So now what gives? Baseball coaches are notorious for not letting the kids play another sport and I know from the class of 2007 a kid who had to give up varsity basketball for baseball at La Serna. I know another that had to give up baseball at Cal in 2004-5 because baseball coach forced him to choose or he would ride the pine and not play. This whole thing is going know where and I think that everyone has pretty much made their case against what you are trying to say. Bottom line as I stated earlier Lowe doesn’t make a kid choose; their talent, work ethic and determination do. My kid played multiple sports (3 varsity sports) and played for Lowe and rode the pine (TNP) somewhat. Big deal! There were others better than him on the team who also played 3 sports and played, so life is tough. This is not NJB and Lowe didn’t have to let him play a qtr. and he choose to stay and stick it out 2 years at varsity. Never was he told he couldn’t do both. He was encouraged to do one but not forced.
La Serna Team should be MVP not one player. Just an idea.
Well ANATOMY OF SPORTS IN AMERICA:
I hope you are not suggesting that basketball fundamentals are more difficult than baseball. If you are what can you say about performing 3 out of 10 times and being considered very good. Or even football for that matter.
The younger Burkes are two sport players. I do agree with some of your "anatomy", but I am very aware of players playing a sport year round. But, it is not always necessary to "zone in" on only one sport to make it to the next level. Mlti-sport athletes playing at the next level include:
Drew Harris = Cerritos College Safety
Victor Soto = Rio Hondo Baseball
Jack Francis (la mirada football/baseball) = Cerritos college football
Matt Rush (La mirada football/ baseball) = Cypress Baseball
Isaac Garcia = Mt Sac (#2 in Cal) football
Just to name a few (Isaac of whittier hs football and baseball)
I predict all of the above will move on to higher levels of college sports after their 2 years at the JC level. Probably division 2, maybe division 1. Not Divison 3.
Many times that "zone in on one sport mentality" comes from the Parents' philosophy
If I were a Varsity Coach I would want players who are accustomed to "competing". I want "competitors" that are going to compete at "crunch time" Playing different sports can make a player more competitive, because they face adversity more often.
La Serna could have used a little "CRUNCH" last night!!
These multi-sport athletes are just more accustomed to dealing with the "crunch" because they take part in it more often.
Also they learn to play for and adjust to different coaches; different personalities. This is good for their future. They are part of 2 different teams and have more players relying on them. They interact with more people. They compete more often. I know about summer basketball and all that, but summer basketball teams are at times without some of their more dominant players because they may be playing another sport
I could not imagine Coach Mazzotta telling Nygren (la habra quarterback and pitcher and basketball player)or questioning his dedication to football because of time he puts into other sports.
The other sports help his football. He is a fierce competitor.
I could not imagine Coach Gonzalez questioning the Burkes about the time put into baseball being affected by football. It just will not happen
Now, If La Serna Basketball was not a first or second round and "OUT" every year, I could understand. This is not Long Beach Poly football or Mater Dei basketball. It is average, at best, high school basketball (When compared to other communities and not only the weak Del Rio League)
I will say one thing, I was VERY PROUD when I saw Kyle Bisogno hit those two shots vs Calhi. Great kid, great family, great comeback.
It was also great to see the "family" that team appeared to be after the basket at the buzzer. That includes Coach Lowe. One player jumped into Coach Lowe's arms. That was beautiful
MICHAEL ARCEO
MICHAEL CROSBY
MICHAEL SALDANA WITH COACH LOWE
JEREMIAH SALCEDO
MATT BRIDGE

THE CLIPPERS
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
CALIFORNIAS MICHAEL ARCEO
I THINK THIS YEARS DEL RIO LEAGUE MVP SHOULD BE MICHAEL ARCEO. NOT ONLY CAN HE LEAD A TEAM BUT WITHOUT HIM; THEY WOULD OF GOTTEN NO WHERE.. THE TEAMS RUNS ON ARCEO'S DRIVE. IF ARCEO IF HAVING A BAD GAME THERE IS NO ONE TO PICK IT UP. UNLIKE THE LA SERNAS "TEAM" THEY ARE ALL SHOOTERS IF ONE FAILS THEY HAVE A "TEAM" TO GET THE WHOLE TEAM THROUGH IT. THERE IS NO OTHER PLAYER THAT A COACH WOULD WATCH MORE IS ARCEO.. AT EVERY DEL RIO LEAGUE GAME YOU WOULD HERE A COACH YELL, "STAY ON THE SHOOTER" AND THAT WOULD BE ARCEO. HE AT SOME POINTS WAS TRIPPLE TEAMED TO KEEP HIM FROM SCORING ... THAT ALWAYS MADE A TEAMS DEFENCE OVER WORK... EVEN AT THE LAST GAME AGAINST THE OSOS. THE COACH JUMPED UP " SOMEONE GET ON HIM..
ARCEO SCORED 19 POINTS IN THAT GAME.... JUST ASK ANY PLAYER FOR EL RANCHO. WHO THOUGHT IF THEY TOOK HIM OUT LITTERLY, THAT WOULD STOP HIM.. NO OTHER PLAYER IN THE DEL RIO LEAGUE GOT A CHANT OF MVP AT THE LINE. HE IS ACTUALLY VERY RESPECTED IN THE LEAGUE BY ALL PLAYRES. I ALSO HERE THAT HE HAS A 6'2 BROTHER, WHO IS A GREAT REBOUNDER.
AND FOR COACH OF THE YEAR THAT WOULD HAVE TO GO TO LA SERNA. GREAT JOB TO ALL
MVP
MVP
RESPECT THE NUMBER 21
del rio league fan for life,
Sorry to correct you
Josh Sheik was an outstanding waterpolo goalie (led the team to CIF Finals in 2004) for the Lancers and was also a pitcher for the baseball team
Sports fan,
In basketball, its difficult to find many multi-sport athletes as the game has become so competitive. Club basketball (not NJB but AAU, real SHOWCASE Bball) or any club sport, for that matter, consumes an athlete's life, leaving very little for much else IF and only IF he/she desires to make it to the next level (talking sports here, only!!!)
That being said, LS has had numerous multi-sport athltes that have bi-passed basketball, to focus on Baseball. A fine example are the Burke boys. All grew up in NJB, but are football and baseball studs (must be in the genes). Its truly about the time the kid is willing to put in to his/her sport. I have heard the same "rumors" about the baseball coaches penalizing players for taking on a winter sport, too close to the spring baseball season. so it runs across the board.
Gone are our days of Bo Jackson. Its our own fault! With the inception of club sports, we want to reward those who ARE willing to put in the time (Gold level vs. platinum level, A vs. AAA, NJB vs, AAU) We have also created (or at least tried to create) the uber-athlete or super athlete, who goes pro straight out of high school instead of developing any and all he could be good at. Right or wrong, that's the anatomy of youth sports (at least in bball) in America today.
A coach...A VARSITY COACH desires to win (lets be honest, here) and can't do it if an athlete isn't able to put in the time to focus on mechanics, strength and condition PROPERLY, learn and develop new plays and spend time to develop, mentally and physically and as a parent of a collegiate athlete, it doesn't get much easier at the next level.
Just an observation from an insider looking out.
Coach Lowe does not discourage playing other sports. Playing Volleyball in the spring is a nonissue because it doesn't effect the summer or fall. Playing football and then going into basketball is tough because of the playoffs for football. Basketball to baseball is also hard because baseball has already started and basketball is still going. There are plenty of athletes that had played all-net growing up that did not play basketball as they got older at LS but that is not Coach Lowe's fault. It comes down to time and preparation. Waterpolo is the only fall sport mentioned and none of the players mentioned ever played varsity in track or baseball.
I want to tip my hat to the young men from Santa Fe who endured ALOT from the very beginning of this year, new coach & new players and MUCH, MUCH more. it was not easy for the players and as a fan i watched alot of heartbreak take place on the court but there were some players that NEVER gave up. I want those players to know, and they know who they r, you r the true MVP's because the lessons you learn from a not so winning team are greater than the one's you learn from winning. Those who vote for MVP need to also take a look at Santa Fe because I can guarantee you will find an MVP in that bunch.
okay La Serna mom and dad
my focus has been on football and baseball and basketball. I was wrong not thinking about the other listed sports. You listed 2 in baseball.
All I know is what baseball and football players have said as they have grown up in Whittier Pony, NJB, etc. and then went to la serna hoping to be a multi-sport athlete. My children grew up with them.
Can you list a football player? Athletes like Victor Soto (not a basketball player) whose coaches reinforced him being a multi-sport (all league football and baseball) athlete at La Serna.
Consider Cal-Hi, Pioneer, and Whittier. They all had football players on their basketball teams this year.
Last year the Basketball League MVP (I think) was Drew Harris, the starting quarterback and DB on Cal's football team.
Who on LS's basketball team will play baseball this year.? I believe none played football.
There are all kinds of really good athletes at La Serna. But the ones who love football or baseball are being "cheated"
After reviewing the blog entries on this topic, I have a question. While I do agree Arceo played his heart out and made the difference (at least for his team), Should the League MVP come from a team that came in second with a record of 5-5? Love the kid and see him as a leader out on that court, but would it have been acceptable for Kobe to be last year's NBA Finals' MVP? over Pierce or even Garnett? (Of course, I say yes! as I bleed purple and gold - but realistically..)
Where was Cal ranked in pre-season polls? and were they suppose to finish ahead or behind La Serna? Who had the biggest battle and biggest odds to beat?
Cal ranked over LS = LS player for MVP
LS ranked over Cal = Arceo for MVP
(as for which Lancer...too hard to decide. was definite team effort.
Just thinkin out loud, here
To Dad,
Honest, I'm just a mom and have only made 4 or so comments on this blog site(however, I've read quite a few since footbal season began this year). My husband and I just enjoy high school sports and like to see kids we know get their name in the stats. Why do people go to public school and not our local St. Paul? Two separate issues, probably. The families that choose public do so because they're paying taxes, and we have some good educators at our WUHSD campuses. (I was employed for many years there). It is hard to justify the tuition costs. Those that choose other private school maybe feel if they spend more, they get more. However, those that attend value the continuation of their children's faith formation and the small, close enviroment the students and faculty can share. The liturgies the student's participate in are beautiful. It's worth the $$ sacrifice. And for the record, there are many alumni sending their kids there.
GOOD LUCK TO THE BASKETBALL AND SOCCER TEAMS!!
Del Rio bb Fan,
Weak league maybe this year, next year is another year and all the schools have some nice talent coming up. Did LS win because of the system or Talent? I think it was a combination of both. Last year's coach at LS didn't do a great job with the talent he had, and Lowe did take advantage of what talent he did have this year that was left over. It takes players willing to buy into the system to help a team win and that is what the LS players did in league. L.S. has most of their team coming back next year and then some. Cal also has some great young talent moving up. Santa Fe too has some guys playing JV and Fresh. that look good so don't get too disappointed. La Habra and Sonora did play great but they are losing most of their players for next year so let’s see what happens. FYI-L.S. and Cal have a lot of young talent coming up from JV and Freshmen so watch out for the next 2-3 years.
Del Rio Fan Crosby as MVP? No way.
I'm sorry but there really has not been a consistent player in league this year that has kept their team winning. The only one's that I know of from researching MAXPREPS.com and seeing them play is Bridge who has been solid for most of his games avg. over 9 pts and 8 reb. per game and Valdes from La Serna that has averaged at least 10 pts a game and about 8 reb. the games he didn't hit his avg. were games that were blowouts by L.S. La Serna has won 10 in arrow since he has started playing and Desowitz who has avg over 8 per game in league. Take away any of those 3 from LS and they don't finish 10-0. Sorry guys but you need to pick from those guys for MVP. Something to think about. If any of them were on the other teams they may have avg. Crosby numbers. Aside from Arceo who was my favorite until the last 2 games I can't think of anyone else. Their teams records are just too week. None of these other guys really showed up to play against LS when they had to except for one player. Thoughts? (Spell Check/LMU you have me worried about my spelling on blogs now)
HEY - del rio bb fan.....
....uhm, exactly which or what part of Del Rio are you a Fan of or to?
Before you start bashing people and/or organizations you may want to brush up on your writing and spelling skills!
....it's SANTA, not SANA....
Congrats to those headed to the first round! You're Offense has got to come out swinging and you better D'up at the other end!!!
Gentlemen forget the HYPE, just do you!!!
Amat Dad; Her&Him, you as a mom are very involved in blogging about football and not education, you now change your name to HerandHim you see the change because we all do Lol. And we have never heard from Him maybe you’re Him? You seem to be much evolved with football and the coaching staff. You have a number of blogs. In the past you have talk about talent, recruits, opportunity to play at a higher level. Plus you have your history down, but you’re a little wrong. Like you have said, you are just a mom. Will you answer why the alum’s kids go to public schools and other private schools? Now we know you’re not new to this blog. But you say you read these blogs occasionally.
del rio bb "fan?"
Sounds like you are far from it.
Okay Sports Fan where do we begin? Let's just check the facts before we make statements we can't totaly substantiate. I will give you a list of players that have played LS Varsity Basketball, in addition to another sport;
Aaron Valdes - Water Polo
David Wong - Volleyball (Long Beach)
Brian Cybolin -Volleyball(Whittier College-Bball)
Isaiah Valdes - Volleyball
Jeff Greenwood -(6'8") Waterpolo(CSULB/Water polo)
Andrew Valdes- Waterpolo(Occidental College/Water polo)
Nathan Wong - Volleyball
Eric Navaro -Baseball
Eddie Zozaya - Track
We are sure there are more. These are just the ones WE know. Coach Lowe has asked kids to focus on one sport but that is up to the athelete and the amount of practice they can put in without effecting their team members or themselves. He has been accomodating in adjusting practice times for kids who are able to handle it.
just an FYI
Yo, sports fan: La Serna sophomore Aaron Valdes, one of the area's fine young players on the Lancers' varsity, is also one of the area's best water polo players for the Lancers.
ok heres a summary of the del rio league season--WEAK!!-this is a terrible league with teams that play totally ugly basketball- CALHI tanked down the stretch with two ugly losses to WHITTIER and SANA FE- Whittiers coach is a total no class fool-its sad that none of the other coaches like or respect him-he coaches dirty cheap shot basketball- can any one possibly defend him??- why is he still coaching at Whitter??- PIONEER is the most disappointing team- they had the most returning players yet lost to teams they had no business losing to and at 4-6 they have no business making the playoffs and will get blown out- LA SERNA their coach is by far the best-they win because of their sysyhtem not because of their talent. and once again LS will get blown out in the playoffs-all in all the league is horrible-it keeps getting worse every year= what is it going to take to improve the quality of basketball? on a positive note LA HABRA,SONORA AND LA MIRADA have had great seasons and will do well in the playoffs.
Why and how can any coach limit a high school player to only one sport. Is sports for the coaches gain or the students participation. The old days it was always the better coaches did well but talent changed every three to four years so success often changed. in four years how many of these kids go on ? let them experience all that they can without any discrimination as so many coaches display when a student doesn't play 24/7 there specific sport. Anybody agree ?
Michael crosby from Pioneer should get MVP , for the Del Rio League. 16.8 pts a game and 9.8 rebounds a game. Nobody is close in the Del Rio League. Check out on max preps.
Pioneer does not deserve the MVP, going 4 and 6. Give it someone on a winning team.
Coach Lowe continues to dominate the Del Rio League. His teams play well and it shows in the domination of this weak league.
But, does anyone notice that Coach Lowe does not keep multi sport athletes? OK, name all the multi sport athletes on the La Serna Varsity Basketball team over the past ten years.
I can name 3:
Jason Koza (1998) = Cal State dominguez hills soccer
chris Weitzel 1998
6 foot ten inch water polo player, Greenwood (2006), who I think was the player of the year in basketball. He could not turn "him" down.
Let more players play another sport coach. You act like you are making the CIF quarterfinals or semi finals every year. Maybe it would be ok limiting "your" athletes to basketball only if you were a CIF Power, but La Serna is far from that.
Hey SJB, is that what you're learning at school? How to put down your fellow Catholic School? You need to mature a little bit.
I'll admit, I'm partial to Swordsmen teams, but Coach Miller seems a great choice. The boys program was never talked about until last two years and just clinched league (first time since, what, 1967?) Girl's team strong competitors and league co-champ. Two winning teams (while sharing one gym for practice). That's getting the most out of your teams.
SJP
With your bought and paid for education that's the best comment you could come up with? 300rd?? 2=2 is still 2????? WT_?
Should have stuck with a public school....at least you would be able to form two comprehensive and correct sentences that make sence.
Get some class and I suggest you get TO class!
Hey Statman: So much for your pipe dream about Pioneer upsetting La Serna and Saldana for MVP...Saldana gets shut out by Desowitz with 3 blocks and 5 airballs! Looks like Arceo will be MVP by default.
Congrats on 10-0 in league LS and good luck in the playoffs!
Yo, oiler rob: The Montebello win over La Serna was the second game of the season. A lot has changed since then.
You might have an argument concerning St. Paul, but the Swordsmen are not the same team, either, these days.
roger you have la serna and st paul ahead of montebello in the boys basketball rankings is a joke mtb beat both of those teams we all know who the top two teams are but montebello is third best hands down player of the year d williams best player i have seen in years mtb has a trio of players all underclassmen who should be on the all area team mtb would have won the drl if they were in it drl league is a little down this year good luck to all the teams that make the playoffs including the girls st paul girls are really good
The Del Rio league is weak!! La Serna will not even get past the second round! Well, have they ever??
After watching La Habras boys BB team play there is no doubt in my opinion that the Daily News player of the year should be Jordan Sachs- he is the ultimate team player and team leader- he loves to play the gam and wills his team to win. He obviously scores his points- i saw him score 28 points in each of the last two games. No offense to any other player- but he is a pleasure to watch - he has a great all around game and should be a solid college player at Westmont College. once again im giving my vote to Jordan Sachs of LH!
Swordsmen Forever; what divisions do you both play in? Like Jesus of the desert. So I guess Coach Miller could be coach of the year at division 300rd, like the film. Hey that’s progress.2=2 means only2 lol.
There are players on each team that could be named MVP but only one that would impact the team if he would not be there and that would be Michael Arceo from Cal. Despite the glaring fact that Barber simply cannot coach his way out of paper bag as shown in the Whittier game, Arceo is the doing the best he can with the system he's working in. He is clearly the MVP, stat wise, presence wise, and he is a great kid.
Coach of the Year - clearly not Barber!
How about Coach Miller fro Coach of the Year . The boys program has clinched a league title and his girls team has cliched a tie with a first in sight tonight at Amat. 2 programs = 2 champs
ok i have a scenario for everyone.....
first if cal loses on friday and pioneer beats la serna on friday they will both be 5 and 5 and will be tied for second after splitting with eachother (tie breaker rules are 2nd round winner) but for the sake of this blog a tie is a tie.
thus if saldana from pioneer has a huge game against la serna and beats them something arceo nor anyone else in the league could do.. i believe saldana has just as much a shot at the MVP as arceo does it should be interesting... even barber knows how deadly saldana is he boxed and 1 on him for an entire game
like i said before there were still games to be played which can make bold statements to other coaches
p.s. la serna has plenty to play for first its senior night and second, going 10-0 is a huge accomplishment there is plenty of fight left in this game
also if pioneer and cal tie for 2nd do they both go in as 2nd place teams because they are in different divisions this could determine between a home game and a road game?

girls fan; its all good, but were not or not realy looking at girls sports. but its all good i guess?
As far as girls basketball, I believe Coach Pittman from whittier high school should have strong consideration for coach of the year. Whittier's point gaurd, (one of the Amieco twins?) Has tremendous skills and Should def be player of the year.
Ok, can someone just build me a "Best of the Best" team! I mean someone put together a Roster...of say your big picks, you're the Coach and you get to HAND PICK your SQUAD!!
Who you got...? Humor me, put some talent on the bench or second string too.....
Come on.....someone......
ROGER????
La Serna Fan,
Love Saldana's game too but how can you have him on 1st team according to your criteria? they didn't win even 1/2 their games.....NEXT?
Del Rio bb fan,
Bridge as MVP?? you might want to look at league stats (via MAX PREPS BASKETBALL) Yes! he's a big man, but it may actually surprise you where he falls in team stats (points, assists and rebounds)...especially for being a big man. My vote (if I actually had one) stays with Arceo
As for Coach? hands down! Mike Lowe. he did in one year what Randy Villegas couldn't do in many (on both JV and Varsity levels). The Current LS team is made up of Villegas' picks. It took Lowe to use them properly.
my opinion on coach of the year is Mike Lowe of La Serna. Its good to have him back coaching after a couple of years off. He gets the most out of his team. They play fundamnentally sound basketball and execute their offense when it counts. His team will go 10-0 in league. The MVP should go to Matt Bridge of La Serna because at 6' 7" he gets big rebounds and baskets for LS - thats just my opinino i know trhere are other strong candidates but i believe those are the best two choices.
Hmmmm, WOW, and Statman have all made good comments on this topic. My point is that an MVP is supposed to perform well in big games and lead his team through adversity to success. You can't have an MVP come from a team that hasn't won at least half their league games and you shouldn't punish players from La Serna because if you put some of them on the other teams their stats would be equally impressive as kids from El Rancho, Pioneer and Santa Fe. That being said....Arceo should be MVP because he has consistently performed well and his team has a winning record in league.
1st Team
Bridge...consistent scorer, rebounder, defender
Desowitz...hit big shots and made key plays, shut down key opponents in big games
Salcedo...big time scorer
Marquez...turned around Santa Fe's season
Saldana...good all around stats
I think Coach Lowe seems to being doing a great job getting the most out of his players to have LS in first place. First class guy, running a first class program.
Now hands down we HAVE to have back to back WDN player of the year!!! You take Derrick Williams away from LM and they do not have the record and current #1 ranking if CIF DivIIA poll. Williams by far is one of the greatest talents we've had in the area for basketball in years. Williams hands down would be my first selection if I was starting a team this year or even in this decade!!!
