Great weather, good baseball, who could ask for anything more?
St. Paul scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat La Serna, 5-4, in a North Orange County baseball game Saturday at Rio Hondo College.
A great setting, excellent facility, outstanding weather, good baseball, good programs, playing the game the way it's supposed to be played. Couldn't ask for anything more.
A real rivalry could be developed here, with the teams playing their opening games of the season against each other on a regular basis.
Something to think about.

The ad from Cal hi......what?
Karl Perez coundnt make grades,hum.. and we knew something was wrong and thats was not right. Hes hardship is that he got a raw derl.Let him play.
The kid can play.
yes, there may be 2 young pitchers (juniors I think)on this team that may go D1. I do not see any others.
To add to the list of St. Paul graduates playing College Ball there was also Dwight Tardy 05 was a D1 prospect but chose to play football, Rudy Quinones signed with USC and transferred to Fresno State. Steve Salas was drafted. I am sure the current St. Paul players also have the talent to play D1 baseball.
Sports fan original & Big Daddy 22
You mentioned you wanted to know recent SPHS graduates that are playing college Baseball, I know Anthony Aguilera Class 05? is playing Division 1 Baseball for San Jose State.
Big Daddy 22
Name all those Division 1, 2, and 3 teams St. Paul beat. Did those teams make the playoffs, or were they "lower level teams"?
"God Given Truth?" Come on!
And, Can any of you list the recent players from St. Paul who have moved on to college baseball? I asked two weeks ago; or more. NAME THEM!!
Or does facing teams like Cantwell and Ontario Christian limit the number of players who are qualified to move up.
I am just asking, not putting down St. Paul.
Another subject: is Karl Perez going to return to Cal to play football? He is inelligible if not released by Cal, unless he develops a hardship case.
I heard there was more involvement than just baseball. I do not know about my source though.
I hope he returns. I also hope Cal does not "release" him, because I think it is better for Karl to "beat the adversity that got him here". Not run from it.
The truth and big daddy 22 both of you are fools; private schools accept whoever comes recruiting is a myth. So went we have a good kid who pays there way he was recruited? What about the other schools who have good kids were they recruit? A lot of our kids don’t want to go to cal hi or whittier so the parents send them to SPH!!
The facts BIG DADDY22 are that more kids that play at the next level come from public schools across the nation. You name the private schools that do best and I’ll bet 98% of those kids from private do not make the next level, that’s why private schools go after the most talented to promote their school. Talent and geniuses are at every school and neighborhood. You as a kid have to possess the GOODS!
Not the division……… but the school who wants a kid will say anything, if you believe anything you better believe that!
El Rancho beat Pioneer? Or maybe it was a typo, good luck Pioneer I also think Palacios is a great prospect. I know my Dons are young but one could hope. It’s going to be tough in the second half of the season. I believe Montebello beat La Serna. So maybe anything can happen.
The hatred on St.Paul needs to stop now. Everyone always talks crap about them being in D.IV or D.V. On anyday, any team could beat anyone. St.paul may be in D.IV now but last year when they were in D.V, they beat D.1 D.2 D.3 teams and so on from there. The public Schools got to face the facts, that St.Paul is the place to be right now because they are having the most success than the other schools around them. It sucks to say it but the facts show. I don't hate the other schools around area, but it's just God givin truth.
LS beat PHS 9-8 today in a hard fought game. Make no mistake about it: Pioneer can hit. Both teams had 12 hits. Palacios had a double and homerun and is an offensive force. Aguirre can hit well, as can a few of their other guys. They simply lack the solid pitching and defense to be a great team. If they were in the Almont league, they'd be right there battling Alhambra, Montebello and Schurr.
LS plays Cal at LS on Friday, then plays Covina and Montebello on Saturday in the Northview tournament. Let's see how the DRL's best stack up against some traditionally good teams. Good luck to all the DRL teams in their tournaments.
I heard what I thought was a great comment by hall of fame basketball player (NY knicks = 60's and 70's ) and U Senator Bill Bradley on Bill Mayer (HBO) the other day.
Mayer asked him "what has happened to the Knicks? Bradley ansered "They draft stats, not character".
By the way, all recent blogs have been mine, sometimes I forget to write "original"
Anonymous: I have live long enough that I do not fake.
and "live it". Do not talk about it.

Tell your parents to save their hard-earned money. You are learing "trash talk". Love has many meanings (not 'bumpin'). I enjoy intelligent bloggers comments and expressed it in a loving way. Take some time this lenten season and learn that not all emotion has to be sexualized.
An the fake "original" just does not write the same, so you're not fooling anyone in those last two comments.
Did you notice, Murray posted another blog? We should all start writing on that one, except it's all about the school up in the "friendly hills" Talk about expressing "love"
What a bunch of frikken losers.
Have you all gone back and read what you have all written? What a load of drivel and unintelligble crap.
Doesn't matter if you are a SP guy, a Del Rio guy, a Santa Fe guy or whatever team you are a homer for, none of what any of you have written makes sense.
If this is what our schools (public and private) is putting out then we've got bigger issues to deal with besides whether one team is better than the other.
The majority of you have no clue and unfortunately you give your respective schools a bad name with all the crap you post here. Thank god you all aren't represenative of most supporters of your school.
I'll admit it, I'm a St. Paul homer and it saddens me to see some of the stuff our fans post. It is embarrasing and is not at all indicative of St. Paul. Then there are those of you who say crap about St. Paul. You don't know what you are talking about and you just regurgitate the same old stuff. St. Paul has a fine athletic and academic tradition but you get caught up in your obvious hate for St. Paul that you don't care what the truth is.
What a bunch of sad, sad people.
Sports fan original, we teach God faith classes and our kids come for that reason. Your comment about carry a bible who does? Maybe because you are a pagan infidel you can’t see beyond your little mind. And God loves the believer and not you!!!!! Only believers are accepted not you God forsaken SFO.
Why are we so successful in not only sports but academics? Because it’s God. Shut up! sports fan original.
So HerandHim that’s what Rick James was taking about when he said I went to parochial school “freaks” yes the world needs more love and bumping ugly is a form. I am a Monarch and we own SP in every sport, try and count the years of our prevailing over that school…….. But St Paul is slime and has made no progress and the school is still getting smaller. We’ll see this year I hope you will be there. Please don’t bring “him” but I’m sure it’s not your first rodeo.
is it true that gerber and pampers wants to sponsor the cal baseball team. cry and throw tantrums and they will come. sounds like a movie. i never seem to see any rio hondo baseball coverage anybody know why?
Could we please get more up to date topics for current league activity. All LOCAL schools, sports, leagues, student-athletes. A separate thread for each sport & topic. Who's doing what. Seniors getting looks. Impact players. etc. etc. etc.
I want to clarify something!
Coach Gonzalez is one hell of a baseball coach. I just wanted to give Coach Nieto some credit that is due when it comes to the CIF Playoffs. He has been to the QUARTERFINALS 2 times recently and if my memory is correct that is more consistent than Tony's CIF record. That's all!! The top honor for a high school baseball coach is a CIF Championship and Tony G. has one. There is not state playoffs in baseball like in basketball and football
Santa Fe continues to lose. They usually play pretty well (battling a good St. Paul club and beating a couple of OK teams) early on, but once they lose a couple of games in a row, they fall apart. Someone teach those players that losing is not the thing, it is "how you deal with losing" that is important.
SOMEONE TEACH THOSE SANTA FE PLAYERS "HOW" TO HANDLE A LITTLE ADVERSITY!!!
to Poet:
Anthony G. was very successful at 2 different high schools and has won a heck of a lot of ball games in his long career. BUT, his Cal-Hi teams never got past the first round (or very, very seldom) of the CIF Playoffs except that "ONE SEASON". They finally won a first round game and then went on to win it all. What a group of studs. They also won league that year in basketball. The next year the football team won league and lost to CIF (Shaun Cody and crew) Champion Los Altos 28 to 27 (in the final minute) in the Semifinals.
I watched as the consistent Del Rio League Champions, Cal-Hi lost in the first round a few times to a non league champ from another league. It was La Mirada who beat them a couple of times. Of course La Mirada is far, far from a slouch.
Most important, I never, ever heard of Tony G. Sr. losing a "BLUE CHIPPER". He did built "TEAMS"
to Cal-Hi believe
It has nothing to do with the Bible. If you think the only christians are at St. Paul then you have no idea about people. Sorry to ruin your belief that god loves St. Paul more than he does public schools, but I have lived in Whittier for a long time. I went to school in Whittier and knew kids from St. Paul. If you think the boys and girls from St. Paul were carrying a bible around on friday and saturday night, You are wrong.
Have you ever seen the attitude of some of the football coaches there on friday night? Not too Bible like. I know, football is different!!
CIF rules imply that there must be "hardship" case for the student to be eligible at the next school. If not Karl needs Cal's principal to give the OK. If the principal does, then it may tell all Nieto's players that if you "leave" just go to another school and the principal will sign you off. It would be a "knock" to Nieto from his principal. Not good future "coaching conditions"
I know Karl, and I like the kid a lot. I wish he was still at Cal. Like I said a couple of times before (I had hoped that that kid on St. Pauls bench against La Serna was not Karl. And I supported it with the blog on the MVP in California who had trouble at Cal) Cal needs to find a way to hang on to these guys. Not just for the wins, but for the Kid.
to DRL alum:
I agree. If the player is a "problem" to the rest of the team, then pack it up. A coach usually tries to create a "TEAM". And teams have rules. In this case someone said he could have taken a suspension, but he decided not too.
St Paul is always right down the street and hopefully the CIF will not allow them to "suck up" too many players.
I am very interested. Could someone list the names of St. Paul baseball players that have moved on to college baseball recently? I know there are some.
Hey Whittier,
Come on over for some love, too. I won't tell HIM. We need more love in this world.
sports fan original you're a St Paul guy right or not her but Him? your attacks are obvious. But like said, I am in love with you and Poet, hey it's a threesome with mad love!!!!!! Get on with you're bad selves.
I ask why you guys are wrestling with a good kid’s decision. He is a victim of predatory opportunism
SPHS dispatches their parents to prey on the wounded. Only to snatch the brightest from the area and say look at our school. I say to you SP develop the kids just like the teaching from the Bible, look for the kids with needs that your school and its beliefs’ in God with the ultimate power and love that He possesses. If SP believes God can change anyone or what the scriptures do actually say then why not go after the kids most challenged? Good luck Perez!! I hope there are some Christians there.
HeradHim your recent post name. I know what you’re saying. I played football, baseball, and when I was about 8 years old I played basketball all until I was 13. but when I was a freshmen at my Alumni-school!! Where my parents sent me. I experience some of the atrocities that no young kid should endure. Pinata is a good word that I wouldn’t have thought of. At first it seems like an allusion for me but when I think back I know it’s not just rough criticism. I dropped every sport after high school and wouldn’t watch or go to a game at any level. The ramifications stay with you forever. I if I ever have kids won’t send them to a religious school.
to Disappointed Santa Fe Baseball Fan
I do not know, but I would guess that coaching at Santa Fe will not improve.
Does the Athletic Director (the last head coach) have the guts to search for and hire a quality baseball guy. I predict no!! He may not want Santa Fe to win under new direction. That might hurt him. Hey, I might be miles off, but I have seen it a few times before!
One more chance! Does the principal care? Not based on the past!! I think that is strange because her husband was a head varsity football coach.
I have known some and I still believe that there are quality "baseball in mind" teachers that would love to take over that "stagnant; unimproving" program. A good program to take over: if you win you did a great job. If you are below average then you are like the other guy. It is almost a "cannot lose" situation!! Both new, young teachers and experienced older teacher coaches may be interested.
Do you think there are "future teachers" that played ball in college and want to continue in baseball (because they love it!) and teach in the classroom. There always has been some and I believe there still is. Are there good coaches elsewhere that may like a change of environment? Maybe!
One problem; you have to look for them. Or, send out flyers like many good, athletic minded institutions do! That takes effort. And Whittier Union High School District usually does not take make that effort when it comes to sports.
Even a small amount of "scientific behavior" by the A.D. or the principal. It would be a simple question. Would these athletes have a better chance at success if we tried to get a good coach to coach them? Then search, hire, and watch the results. If not, what is lost?
But I don't think it will ever happen. Egos will not let it happen. And, do they really care about the student athletes?
First of all "friend", there's a key on the keyboard that reads "caps lock", try pushing that first before you make everyone's eyes bleed.
Second of all, I know the story. I know the story of a certain St. Paul Dad being at Cal High's practices all the time. I know the story of Perez living with that certain family. I know the story of him being in St Pauls dugout two days after leaving Cal. Now doesn't it seem weird with all the talent the Swordsmen have, that Perez wouldn't have second thoughts about transferring unless he was previously GUARANTEED a spot on St. Paul's team?
And of course you're going to believe the boy, why would he say that he was recruited? Why would any player say they were recruited? Because they would get the school in trouble. Think about that for a second, why would Perez come out and say that he was recruited?
People should stop blaming Nieto for kids problems. He doesn't care how good you are, if you're not going to play by the rules, then theres the door. Its how all programs should be run. Not like these other area programs that led kids bend the rules just a little bit because they are great talents.
to Herand Him
yes, Jason Dovel. They also won the 14 year old Little League World Series. It was coached by Kaupang, the head basketball coach at La Mirada
other stuff: If Perez did decide to leave instead of suspension, then I am not against the school if they do not give him the OK to play elsewhere.
Suspension is a warning signal. Not a cut from the team.
I seems some of the best personnel do not get along at Cal.
cigar tony rules.some of my best childhood days were spent playing and watching baseball at caufman field, hit a home run free pizza at shakeys.allstars ,local area championships (majors) there was alot of kids in little league since there was no pony baseball, just in whittier was at least 4-5 seperate leagues. enough of the fun stuff, now to a sore subject Anthony should be a baseball coach again HINT HINT HINT. GO DODGERS !!!!!
Original sports fan: your comemnts are astute. The thing that I like about the DRL today is that so many of the kids come from just a few youth leagues, played travel ball together and/or against each other, etc. so they come from the same basic skill level as youth players; this makes for good competition. Whittier area youth baseball has been very solid for many years.
In Pioneer's case, I think they will surprise. They have some good guys- Palacios is one of the very best in DRL; they had 10 hits yesterday against Whittier. Always the same with the Titans; not enough pitching to win consistently. But I actually think they could get on a roll and compete for a playoff spot this year. You heard it here first! (but hey, I'm an old Pioneer Little League player who played for Anthony Gonzales- I may be basing it on heart as well as head) At one time in the late 70's and early 80's, Pioneer was a very good program, built by Anthony Gonzales, Sr., who then went on to build an awesome CIF-wining program at Cal. I'd love to see coach Magallanes win. He seems like a good guy, and he's had to cope with lots of tough seasons, usually with only one coach helping him. No freshman team again this year at PiHi. Sad to see. Go Titans this season!
As regards to coaches running rough with their players,
we have a nephew that this happened to. Played only baseball through youth, travel, and high school. All the the high school team, the coach is bustin' his chops, using him as the pinata whenever he had a bad day. This coach had multiple fits of throwing chairs over fences and tantrums. Well, the first week of September his Senior year, the team meeting begins and here go the coach comments, our nephew is fed up and walks off. He was a quiet kid, if anything he may have had a little arrogance (but many athletes do) This causes a chain reaction where he completely stops playing baseball and decides to join the armed forces. Nothing against joining, however, this kid was a pitcher, had ASU monitoring his studies and play, good prospects, and immediately stops playing and a month later signs up. Coaches need to control emotions, they have a lot of impact over players. Even if this boy wasn't primed to play at the next level, why should there be this emotional drama going on.
Sports Fan-Org.
That La Mirada High team sure had some talent 2006-07. Jason Dovel is at CSUF Titans and pitched in last year's College World Series games. This is the group that as 12 year old La Mirada Little Leaguers, they won the Little League World Series title in Cooperstown, NY.
HEY I KNOW THE WHOLE SITUATION I HEARD IT FROM THE BOY HIMSELF. HE SAID HE LEFT BECAUSE NIETO TOLD HIM LEAVE OR BE SUSPENDED NOT BECAUSE ST.PAUL RECRUITED HIM. PLUS KARL HAS BEEN WANTING TO GO TO ST.PAUL SINCE HE WAS A FRESHMAN BUT HIS PARENTS COULDNT AFFORED IT TILL NOW. HE WOULDN'T OF LEFT IF IT WASNT FOR THE COACH. SO DON'T SAY ST.PAUL RECRUITED WHEN YOU DONT KNOW THE REAL STORY DRL ALUM.
about Cal-Hi Baseball
About 5 years ago (maybe less) there was one heck of an athlete (quarterback in football and center-field in baseball) who had trouble his junior year and he tried to come back his senior year but it did not happen!
Well, he played at Fullerton J.C. and was the "Most Valuable Player" in the state. Seriously. No kidding!
Then he signed and is playing in the "Minor Leagues". I do not know what happened at Cal but I do know that "Blue Chip" ballplayers in this league are hard to find. No, I do not mean there are not good players around. Do not accuse me of something I did not say!!! I mean "Blue Chippers", kids that can do what this kid did after high school, against super competition in the "Orange Empire Conference"!
This kid could possibly have helped Cal win some more ballgames that year. Yet, I do believe discipline is important also. Like I said, I do not know exactly what happened. I think it would be hard to coach everyday with a group of undisciplined individuals. It may be tough to coach with only one or two. Maybe that was the situation. High school coaches do not make enough money (Head Varsity Coach maybe $3,000) to put up with ? everyday!
I think many of the "real successful" coaches (far in the playoffs; often) have a talent (not common to most coaches)to "reach" these kind of kids. They are "motivators". They make the player understand what is necessary to get the job done. They may have the ability to change a kid's personality a little; to become more of a team player. Some coaches that can do that. Instead of losing a "Blue Chipper" or another player that can win you 6 or 7 league games on the mound, that player becomes a main source of coaching victories. And if I was a coach, I would definitely want to WIN!!!
Well, Pioneer 0 and 2.... will they win more than 1 or 2. And Santa Fe, we will see. But I think these guys may be "products" of the last situation. And that situation was not successful as far as WINNING goes.
Who know, maybe they are building character.
One more thing, about real good ballplayers having moved on to "great college baseball".
to Herand Him
you mentioned Gaylord. One of his teammates at La Mirada, a catcher and third baseman by the name of Jake Johnson (not positive about the first name) played on Fresno State's "National Championship" last season. Thanks for the info!
Santa Fe baseball is going through some major coaching changes....many are happy to see that the old staff is gone but to our dismay the new coaching staff knows nothing about baseball and like Bigdog said, "stick to football." Its sad to see such good talent at Santa Fe High School go to waste because two amateurs don't want to learn the game or take the suggestions of anyone. At the St. Paul, the coaching staff used the sacrafice bunt for about three to four innings straight yet when they needed it the most they didn't call that play. AMAZING! Hey by the way I'm a female and I know when to sacrafice......when your hitter didn't make contact the last at bat you should at least make him bunt to get your tieing runner advanced. Give them some hope.
I agree with the person who said that Santa Fe has real good freshman talent and they don't improve as they move on. Santa Fe has about 4-5 freshmans on their varsity team this year. It's a shame that the coaches do not allow them to shine as they should be. Instead they rather have their seniors who aren't getting the job done do the work. Give the other kids a shot once in a while. Hey it can't get any worse when your losing by 15! And if your reading this Campbell be more aggressive on the bags. That might be your saving grace.
Lastly, Campbell this isn't football. We don't need cheerleaders distracting the boys in the dugout!!!!!! Get them out of there! Save rah rah's for when you are actually winning. The boys have enough cheerleaders sittin in the stands that they don't need distractions. You should have them boys focus on the game as you can tell that they aren't even mentally focused out there because they make simple mistakes.
Big Dog said what do you get, when you have 3 lost puppies, and one old mut.Anwser Santa Fe.Seems like these coaches should stick to football and the other retirement. He should be calling social security instead of pitches. You can't blame the head chief, cause he's taking time off.The lost to La Serna, was embarrassing and worst in school baseball history. At least Steve Hendry kept his games alot closer. And other thing, what makes you think you could win playing at night under the lights, you never had and never will.Your Campbell excuse,we lost to La Serna because we were out of shape and energy. When we played St Paul, tito give me a tissue. Remember coach no crying in Baseball. Like I said stick to football, because thats what the score looked like, two touch downs, safety. to one field goal. But this time La Serna on top. Seacrest out.
nieto nieto nieto , that old saying is help one kid and im satisfied as a teacher/coach. I think you got it wrong screw one kid up and im a success. how many kids do you have to mess w/ b/4 you go. so many kids
, good players ,bad players & bad attitudes it doesnt matter you are the adult, control the situation and gain respect not hatred as you do so well. and another thing its saddening to see you cry so often during a 7 inning game. you throw your rules to abide by and you cant even control yourself much less lead a diverse group of young men to victory by any other way than by intimidation. AGAIN SPORTS ARE FOR THE KIDS.YOU MUST USE ALL SOURCES AND TALENT THAT ARE AVAILABLE NOT YOUR SELECTED SCRUBS.OH YA WHERES THE SUBMARINER ROLE GUY THIS YEAR. SNACK SHACK BABY!
To BigDaddy: Thats not the reason why. Don't make false assumptions about the situation. As I said earlier, the facts are that illegal stuff happened with the Perez to St. Paul situation. Along with that, the problem goes much deeper then the baseball aspect of it all.
To SP Real Baseball: What are you twelve? Don't voice your opinion like you're in middle school. As for the St. Paul not taking La Serna seriously, give me break. Both have great talent.
And just to clarify the whole St. Paul recruiting rumors. St. Paul does recruit. I played in HS a few years ago, and Morales did indeed try to recruit me, as well as two other players. He talked to us after games, we received phone calls from assistant coaches. Its happening whether St. Paul fans want to accept it or not.
St. Paul baseball beat Santa Fe and La Salle by one run each. Wow! Two powerhouses! NOT!!!
State of Cantwell Baseball:
Is there a light at the end of the tunnel? Definately. One year away though. One senior, two juniors and the rest of the team as sophomores. Esentially a JV team playing in a yard full of big dogs. These dogs foaming at the mouth to get to their chomps on the defenseless Cardinals. Just know this, revenge will be sweet. Nothing to say this year. Enjoy your success this year because the following two years will be dominated by Cantwell. So Cantwell, play hard. Take this as a learning experience and unleash your wrath next year. Go CARDS
Santa Fe has had many real good players (sometimes many at once) enter as freshmen in the past 10 to 15 years. The problem is: they have a tendency not to improve. One freshmen team a few years ago went 15 and 0 in league. Then as seniors, that group went 6 and 9 (I believe) and did not make the playoffs.
The program has been stagnant under that coach. I do not think he is a "fundamentalist"
This year Santa Fe is coached by a couple of his ex-players. I do not know much more. Let's see how they do.
to Big League: Santa Fe High School administrators could care less about its baseball program. Evidence? What have they done to try and improve it? Nothing. Many schools in the area do not try to find real good coaches. They just get by with what they have!
Hey Poet! I think I'm in love . . . I like the way you write, think, and support our players in the greater Whittier area. Well you and the 'original' sports fan.
to BigDaddy22: as 'Nacho Libre' would say "take it easy"
(he's a character from a Jack Black movie, great one liners)
Also to add a local player that has gone on to play in college - Adam Gaylord from La Mirada High, is on the Stanford roster. Great bio on their website. He was really involved in high school activities as well as academics and athletics. He graduated thesame year as Kaupang (who went to USD and transferred to Cypress CC).
SP bat woke up tonight. Five home runs! against league opener La Salle High. Good job.
Yo, baseball fan: That freshman kid's name is Rene Medina, but then you really already knew that, didn't you?
hey santa fe did you guys no that was a freshman who closed the game out on saturday whey to go kid keep up the good work #24 whatever your name is
poet said:…….(NO) you are a fool, do you realy think la serna has talent? We didn take you seriously.
In your league ls lancers aren as storys as er or the hated sf and I know c hi condums will whip your axx!
Bigdaddy22 (oh brother) and other SP nut-huggers: yes, SP has beaten the DRL. Every game against LS the last two years has been a very close game except one. LS did beat them in a legion game this summer. The teams are pretty close in talent, with SP having an edge in pitching. They go 4-5 deep in guys who can get outs, while most HS teams are lucky to have 2. Casey's assembled a good team, with lots of local Whittier PONY kids and other recruits like Willson. Good for them. My question to you is why all the boasting, put downs, ALL CAPS, etc? What is your major malfunction, dude? It is sad you don't realize how your posts make you and your favorite team look. Stay classy, BIGDADDY.
A school like St. Paul, which has very good local talent, and can draw form wider areas, and seek out pitchers, especially (Willson and Encinas both went to SP the same year- good job Casey!), etc. SHOULD be better. The bigger story is that the local schools can compete pretty well with a very good St. Paul team. I like St. Paul's team a lot. On a given day, that group could beat any high school team and even some community college teams.
How about this: we support our teams and our players, and also support our area teams. I'm proud of the caliber of baseball in the Whittier area, both at St Paul and in the DRL.
Del Rio League Watcher; what are you talking about? Make some sense. Maybe you should root for your no good teams. Because we won’t recruit them.
If Cal-hi releases Karl to play for St Paul then mybe others will think they can leave one school for another. ???????? Tough Call!
The Catholic Athletic Assn. voted Wednesday to finalize its sports leagues for 2010, with the major change being that it moved Mission Hills Alemany into the Serra League for football.
The Serra League, which competes in the Pac-5 Division, will be made up of Alemany, Los Angeles Loyola, Encino Crespi, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and La Puente Bishop Amat.
A new six-team Mission League in football will include Gardena Serra, L.A. Cathedral, North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, La Canada St. Francis, West Hills Chaminade and Santa Fe Springs St. Paul.
"We have to get a lot better," Alemany Coach Dean Herrington said. "It's another challenge."
Yo Roger,
A little off the subject, but, do you have any information on the 2009, 605 All Star Game?
The O.C. All Star Game is in the works with coaches selected and players nominated.
http://ocvarsity.freedomblogging.com/2009/03/24/football-north-all-star-nominess-named/39007/
YA I HEARD KARL PEREZ GOT VOTED OFF THE TEAM BY THE COACH AND HIS TEAMMATES BECAUSE HE HAD PINK EYE AND DIDNT GO TO PRACTICE FOR ABOUT 2 TO 3 DAYS BECAUSE HE DIDNT WANT ANYONE ONE OF HIS TEAMMATES TO GET IT. TO KICK HIM OFF BECAUSE OF SOMETHING LIKE THAT, THAT IS TOTALLY WRONG. SOUNDS TO ME THAT CAL SHOULD JUST LET THE GUY PLAY AT SP BECAUSE IT WAS THEIR OWN FAULT FOR DOING THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE. WHY RUIN THE GUYS HIGH SCHOOL CAREER? IT'S NOT HIS FAULT THE COACH ACTED DUMB AND MADE THAT DECISION.
OK I DONT KNOW WAT YOU GUYS ARE TALKING ABOUT. I WAS AT THE GAME. I RECALL SEEING SANTA FE SCORING NOTHING ON THE STARTING PITCHER THAT SP THREW. THE ONLY WAY SF SCORED WAS BECAUSE OF AN ERROR FROM THIRD BASE. OTHER THAN THAT THE SP PITCHER OWNED SF ALL DAY. HOW DOES SF NOT SCORE WITH ONE OUT OR NO OUTS AND A MAN ON SECOND OR THIRD. AND WHEN SF DID MAKE CONTACT AND GOT ON BASE IT WAS BECAUSE OF AN ERROR SOMEWHERE. I ONLY SAW 2 GOOD HITS IF ANYTHIN FROM SF. SO I DONT KNOW IF SF IS HAPPY THEY STAYED CLOSE WITH SP BUT I BELIEVE IF SF AND SP WOULD PLAY TEN GAMES IN A ROW THAT SP WOULD GO TEN OUT OF TEN. ALSO LAST TIME I CHECKED SP WAS WHAT 4-0 AGAINST LA SERNA CONTINUING FROM LAST YEAR AND 1-0 AGAINST SANTA FE AND 1-0 AGAINST WHITTIER LAST YEAR. DOESNT THAT MAKE THAT OWNING THE DEL RIO LEAGUE. JUST FACE IT EVEN ON A BAD DAY THAT SP HAS THEY STILL TAKE THE DEL RIO LEAGUE LIKE NOTHING.
The FACTS are that the whole Perez to St.Paul fiasco is being investigated due to illegal things that are against CIF rules.
But it goes A LOT deeper then just baseball. We'll just leave it at that.
Watch out ....new coming freshman from Lake Center Middle School....Hes a big lefty...and got a great glove for first base....Going to Santa Fe.....
The Santa Fe Springs community, and the Santa Fe High sports fans asking why he left. That guy is coach Corona. Corona was the best thing that ever happened to the Santa Fe program. He brought the best out of those kids. He went back to his roots to help that program, instead to my knowledge was disrespected because of some egos. You need to set egos aside,to be successful. I know Corona he is a great coach and deserves better. For those of you who do not know Coach Corona,he was one of the best pitchers at Santa Fe and area in the 80s. I watched him pitch at Santa Fe,college, and pro ranks.Corona knows his baseball and has very high qualities,at the competitve level. For Santa Fe Baseball to lose a guy like Corona , tells you why i don't here much about that program. Corona if your available come coach for me.I need a pitching, catching coach, up here with the Big Boys. You know who this is,I scouted you, drafted you. You could find me at the college, A jobs waiting. Your still the left handed pitcher i know with alot of heart. As for Santa Fe Baseball goodluck.
looks like the talent at el rancho is all gone sad to say because thats a great baseball school

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that I hoped the "new" kid on St. Paul's bench (from Calhi) was not who I think it might be. Well, it was. Karl Perez. Cal needs Karl now. He was all league as a sophomore, but may have a character conflict with Nieto. Karl is one real good player, who hits well and even more important, he can pitch. As a matter of fact I think he would be one of the best players on the team, if not the best.
What happened to him at Cal?
quit screening your blogs .remember freedom of speech
OMG, SP…. I watch the Del Rio League. If I were Whittier Area Watcher, I’d probably talk about St. Paul (sp there) . Public vs Private (Saturday night) SF 2 vs SP 3. The rookie coaches (and their players) did fine against your power house.
I know Coach Morales and root for him and his players all the time. So how about rooting for your school and keeping us informed about your next recruit.
Just heard that Cal High has hesitated to release Karl Perez from their school to play baseball at Saint Paul. The word on the street is that they had already signed CIF Official paperwork and didn't forward them to Saint Paul. Also, heard that they signed the documents but then whited their signatures out. CAL HIGH JUST LET THE KID PLAY. WHY RUIN HIS HIGH SCHOOL CAREER. Just because he wants to transfer out. Does Nieto have problem with him leaving? Does the school?
The Catholic Association Members voted , and by a vote of 16-7, the Serra League will look like this in 2010. The best thing about it? Three teams are guaranteed playoff spots. The Mission League is also below.
Serra League:
Alemany, Bishop Amat, Crespi, Loyola, Notre Dame.
Mission League:
Cathedral, Serra, St. Paul, St. Francis, Harvard-Westlake, Chaminade
So How will this affect St. Paul's schedule? besides a lot of time in traffic.....before too long the CIF board will get to vote on the separate (private school) playoffs they attempted to vote on last year, but was scrapped when the Coaches year 'round association rule vote overshadowed it.
La Serna's blowout win over ER ws not unexpected. Even though they were 1-5 going in, they had played probably the toughest schedule of any DRL team going into the season. Losses were to Laguna Hills (6-2 record), a very good St Paul (3-3), Fullerton (6-2), D1 St. John Bosco (6-1), and Westminster (3-6). They had a real chance to win each of these games. LS is striving to compete with the best teams in the area, regardless of division. This tough pre-season schedule will help the Lancers the rest of the way. DRL will be wide open this year, though LS has the most horses. Look for PiHi and WHS to battle for playoff spots.
Oh No! I just read the paper and saw that Bishop Amat beat Cantwell-SH by 17-0 yesterday!! SP, you better wake those bats up!!
I agree with "Coaching" regarding some of his coach comments. Why have unbalanced coaching teams. Varsity gets 5 coaches and then a school's lower level teams get miscellaneous coaches: too young and inexperienced or not necessarily "baseball" coaches. How does that prepare your Frosh/JV players for when they move up to Varsity? Don't you want them to practice and learn great fundamentals? It seems that would make for a stronger Varsity team. I know sometimes it may be difficult to find a lower level coach, but schools need to try their best to find them.
Coaching said, you and anonymous are flipping out. SF is stable not like SP, most schools would love the opportunity that we provide. It’s one of the best schools public or private in the area.
Hey delrioleaguewatcher who cares about those schools? You guys don’t play real baseball,
SP has the kids to go all the way, no one can stop us maybe amat has a chance. But you local cream puffs no way!!
Anonymous, I think i struck a nerve and that's exactly what i wanted. Because you and I both know what I'm saying is true. Not to be a jerk but I did want to wake up someone. I'll give you an example. Let's take the boys varsity basketball team this year. I know for a fact that there were college bball players that went out for the job. Did they get hired? No! They went on to coach at a rival high school and the program exceled. Yet Santa Fe hired a coach with no experience. You did have a good team. They had lots of potential but how can one coach run the team without the help of assistant coaches. Most of the time he seemed lost. I agree with the blogger who said that the reason Santa Fe doesn't appoint coaches that know something of the game is because of ego. As for your comments about loving the game and the kids, it doesn't sound so loving when you make comments about the kids being ungrateful and all they think about are the stat girls. If you had a program starting from the freshman level you'd probably have a better chance at the kids being grateful at the varsity level. This way you'd teach them the game from the bottom up. So if you really don't have the heart for the game and your there for the stipend maybe you wanna be coaches should stay home and spend more time with the wife and kids. Because any sport you coach takes time and dedication.
Was at Del Rio opening day; Calhi vs Whittier. Great day to honor Jared Garcia and hope the best for him.
And another good day to see Coach Nieto time after time complains about an umpires judgment. Coach, please stay in the dugout. Anyway, Whittier Coach Marty Flores is doing a good job with the Cardinals; they looked like a team with a goal. Well, welcome to the Del Rio. It should be a competitive season of close games. I hear La Serna pounded on El Rancho. No news on the rookies at Santa Fe vs (how many wins will they get?) Pioneer.
BTW, at the Cal game, I could still see shades of GREEN.
Well it looks like DRL is underway. I realy didn't have any doubt that La Serna would come out on top against El Rancho in yesterdays opener they have been playing realy tough teams in the pre season, so the big score did not suprise me. Now for Whittier and Cal, I was at the game and Whittier played very good defense and their bats were solid. Both sides played well one or two errors on both sides but a well played game. What was a little disturbing was Coach Tony Nieto throwing temper tantrums through out the game and almost getting thrown out a couple of times. Then at the end of the game when Whittier won 6-5 he displayed the worst case of bad sportsmenship and character when he and his team walked away without the typical shaking of hands. The assistant Coach for Cal (Jacob Ferris) called his boys back and made them congratulate the boys from Whittier, WAY TO GO COACH FERRIS!!!!!! Come on Coach Nieto get a little class.
I want to correct a mistake I made in my blog on Pioneer never winning much.
Pioneer won 7 games in 97 and 8 games in 99 (not 98) under two different coaches!
to St. Paul
If you could read and interpret a little better you would have realized that I clearly stated "but then I do not know all the names". If I have to spell it out for you: that means there are players in the community that I do not know, therefore if their names are on a roster, I would not "recognize" them. Do you get it now?
Bishop Amat
You too, could use "Tutorial" in an English class!!
hey; her is him! or what!God please help our school.
Sports Fan (TIR),
Shouldn't you be studying? I guess I never realized this blog site was just for high school students. If the parents drop off the comment list, you won't have too much to read or anyone to throw rocks at. I wish you well in your sports endeavors. I assume you play baseball, so maybe my many "gibberish-type questions" may help you get your name in lights.
Mr. Murray? When do the Winter 1st/2nd Team lists come out, or did I miss them?
Oh my gushed, I get so Getty when sport fan writes he knows so much I can’t take it all in on just one day. I feel so good when I rise to know he will speak oh I am so sorry I mean write, but” Him” says it happens all the time. I will try to behave sport fan honest. I would like a lot more tips!! I’m might need more than optimistic. Original her&him.
So OSF (original sport fan) lol what another local kids are on those teams or college schools? Is it only Whittier schools? I ask are you an fxol? Check out Spincostats and ask why you are receiving bad infor.
Where are the St Paul kids? Or any other local school. Mr. knows it all, there must not be any other kid in the area attending those schools.
Roger-
Pioneer's Palacios is #1 or #2 in three batting categories (OB, Slugging and Batting Average)in the state. Check out MaxPreps.
Roger-you might want to get out there and give this guy a lot of publicity. It looks like he deserves it!
Especially from a program that typically struggles.

P.S. Did you ever answer the question as to whether public high school Varsity coaches require a college
degree or teaching credential? It's a relevant question during these times of teacher layoffs.
Servite is loaded this year, my nephew is on the team. Not sure if you are talking about a team other than the varsity, if so we r loaded. SP is good the score was 3-2 and 13-6 I thought SP looked good.
I just checked out Spincostats.com searching for local players in community college programs.
Not many from what I saw, but then I do not know all the names. Steven Kaupang (La Mirada) is hitting 471 with 5 HR's and 38 RBI's for Cypress, a state power.
It was good to see two La Serna players at Rio Hondo.
Victor Soto, La Serna's leader last year, is hitting 289 and is also 1 and 1 on the mound. Matt Burke is on the roster but has only thrown 4 inning this season.
Community college baseball is pretty good, especially the teams within the Orange Empire League.
To COACHING:
Are you kidding me?! This isn’t the pros where coaches get paid ridiculous amounts of money to coach!!! The people coaching are TEACHERS who went to school to be TEACHERS and do coaching on the side, solely because they enjoy the sport and being with the kids. They enjoy teaching discipline and values. If you’re looking for some big fancy program then send your kid to the big fancy schools where the parents have a lot of money to fund the team themselves. And what “PAYCHECK” are you taking about?! These coaches make a total of about .25 cents per hour to coach once you add up all the time they put in!! Their coaching check is not a salary.....it’s a stipend! Before writing idiotic comments make sure you know what you’re talking about! They sacrifice time with their families and time away from their actual job (you know, the one that actually PAYS them) to coach these ungrateful kids who could actually care less about the team they’re on. They are more concerned about what the stat girls are wearing and when they’ll be getting the next patch on their letterman than what’s actually happening throughout their season.
And just so you know, they DO have fielding, pitching and batting coaches. Coach Arnold has been a pitching coach for YEARS!!! And guess what, he’s not getting a check, stipend or any other type of compensation!!! Your critique may have been based on the fact that you were clueless as to Hendry not coaching any more. If that's the case, then get your facts straight before writing.
A person that does not know what they’re talking about (aka. YOU) should not be illustrating their moronic opinions on a public platform. You’re probably that kid that never played sports because you weren’t good enough to make it!
Can SP beat Servite in anything? SP is supposed to be loaded and Servite swept them Monday. Servite is "okay" and we still kicked their butts. This just shows you the difference between D1 and whatever division SP is in.
"Original" is always the best. Thanks for the tips on scouting, 'Sports Fan'. SP lost 2 to Servite, one close, one a blow-out. Looks like Bishop Amat is struggling this year, yet as previously mentioned, it's early and many teams get-it-together and finish strong. I'm feeling optimistic - Can't wait until the Swordsmen add to their losses.
Please try to consolidate your questions, because you’re sounding like gibberish. I am a junior in high school, that’s why I frequent this prep blog. “And you”. I thought you were just a mom? And don’t post much? We students come on here to agree and disagree. Some rocks are thrown but its all good. Are you going to invade every prep party? Is there not an adult blog were you could be just a mom. A mom, don’t think so. I am on campus everyday but I hope you don’t visit much, and you need a dictionary.
I guess you still don’t understand right. Who’s insignificant? How late did you stay up? That you came with an unimaginable word?
Will Pioneer actually win more than 1 or 2 games in league this year. They are off to a good start, but I think they have beaten the same teams Whittier has. I think it has been ten years since Pioneer's baseball team has won more than 1 or 2 games in the Del Rio League. Pioneer won 7 in "97" and 8 in "98" under two different coaches, but not the coach that is there now! Both those seasons the Titans missed the playoffs by one game! It's been a long time Pioneer.
It may be a pretty well rounded league this year. I think La Serna has played the toughest pre-season schedule so far.
Herand Him
Thanks for noticing!!
Hopefully your son will have good days when scouts may be there to scout other players, even from other teams. I would predict that if your teams play a "tough" schedule it would increase the probability that scouts would be there scouting. Or of course if your son's team is special, scouts would probably notice.
I believe some colleges send coaches "postcard" type letters asking them to send back players they have that could possibly play at the next level. Years ago I believe they did this. At present, I have heard nothing (I have not asked). Going "deep" into the playoffs would probably increase the chances of "being seen". Some coaches and schools (because of their backgrounds) produce college players every year.
GOOD LUCK!! Realize, Community College Baseball is darn good, and a lot of players get "Rides" out of there.
Well, St. Paul is playing some tough teams (Servite) in pre-season. And competing pretty well against them. I am not rooting against them, just wondering if they can consistently beat good teams like they beat teams in Division V.
Is Downey that good to pound Cal-hi like that. I checked it out on "Max Preps".
Oh, thanks Roger for letting us know about Santa Fe
From the LA Times Sports section:
After having his team break out green uniforms for a St. Patrick's Day night game Tuesday against Chatsworth at USC's Dedeaux Field, La Puente Bishop Amat Coach Andy Nieto might want to permanently retire the jerseys following an 11-0 defeat.
Green must run in the family?
DRL spanking yesteday. La Serna gives up 7 runs in the first and bearly comes back losing to St John Bosco 12-10.
And pitching gone bad for Coach Nieto at Calhi. Losing a doubleheader at Downey 10-0 and 19-0.
They displayed green hats and shirts in honor of St Pat's Day. Probably matched the color of the squad's faces after the pounding. Anyone for green eggs and ham!
WELL, you better believe you can tell who the "real" sports fan is. He makes sense, write well, and writes about sport topics, not just inarticulate rants. In fact, fake sports fan/anonymous, why not rename yourself THE INSIGNIFICANT RANTER or TIR.
I have a question for those bloggers that have coaching knowledge (not you TIR): I was at a game recently where 3 or so scouts were there looking at a player (college and pro teams). They had a speed gun, so I assume they were there to watch a particular pitcher (from Pacific). I eventually will have a varsity player. How do you get the attention of a college scout to look at your son? His stats alone get noticed... does the program (coaches) contact a college or do parents/players send letters to a college and ask them to take a look? Or, is this where prior team reputations get first look at new players, How? Thanks for any input you can offer.
Yo sports fan: Hendry is taking a year off from coaching baseball. Craig Campbell, an assistant coach in both football and baseball, and Paul Wise are sharing the head-coaching
responsibilities. At last report, Hendry is planning to return next season.
I’m sorry to inform you there are at least three sport fan; so unless there’s expenditure from you to own that (sport fan) name, all obligations are off. The dialogue difference is obvious. Peace out.
to Poet:
I did not realize Hendry left as head varsity baseball coach!! As far as I am concerned that is the best thing that could happen!!
Did they hire someone from the outside? I did not hear about a baseball opening. Or, did they hire one of his assistants who teaches at the school? If you would, please let me know. If you have any other information on him (name, coaching experience, playing experience, etc.) please let me know!
Thanks
Sports Fan
Sports fan: Santa Fe had a very good team in 2007 and came in 3rd in DRL. Lost in first round of CIF baseball playoffs. They have two new young coaches who are motivated. SF will be tough.

I do not hate St. Paul!! But, like I said, I would rather not think of them because they should be way above Division 5 and what St. Paul teams accomplish against teams like Ontario Christian and Twentynine Palms I am not interested.
Also there are two blogs I did not write. I have no idea why someone would write using my name.
They are the blogs beginning with:
*"That question about foul language"....
and
*"Audacity; you started"....
SPORTS FAN DID NOT WRITE THE TWO ABOVE BLOGS. YOU CAN TELL BY THE LANGUAGE ALSO
HEY! PICK YOUR OWN NAMES. DO NOT USE MY NAME!
to COACHING: I could not agree more. And Santa Fe baseball could be a good example. Their Athletic Director is the baseball coach!! For all of their teams to excell at one time or another lately, baseball has not since 1992 or 93 when they had the great QB and future major leaguer Mark Kotsay and his buddies.
Like I said in a different blog, Why do so many coaches hang on sub-mediocrity? Give someone else (and the players) a chance. Is 15 to 20 years not enough. I think many of these guys are scared to give someone else a "shot". Their egos might be hurt!!
Maybe we are wrong, but all other Santa Fe boys teams have excelled lately, even in basketball (2007 or 2008 CIF Quarterfinals)
Why not baseball once in a while. When is the last time they have won a CIF game? And I do not mean a Wild Card game. Well, when is the last time they even earned a shot at a Wild Card game?
St. Paul is the same slime as always. They are who they are!!!!!!!!!!!! Close the school down and bring good to the world!!!!! Ordinary is to good for SP.
To Sports Fan,
What? Audacity? Chavinistic? I'm hoping our (my school) coaches will read this (that's the 'right' people). I want them to change their policies. Hey, just forget I brought up the subject. It hurts me to say anything negative about our school, I know they are not perfect. And all sports experiences are life preparations - anyway, that's what "HIM" tells me all the time, and HIM was the more athletic of the two of us. And, I'm no philosopher, so I'll keep my opinions quiet from here on.
I just read our school newsletter. All four of SP winter teams had the league MVP. Camino Real League -Boys BB-Steven Saenz, soccer-Adrian Montecinos, girls soccer-Justine Telles, and Del Rey girls BB Adrina Rendon (jr). Montecinos is attending the Naval Academy upon graduation. Congratulations MVP and to all local school winter sport players.
BA Lancer,
My son plays at El Rancho and I havent seen any player that will be good enough to play at SC such as the Flores boys. I just watched Amat play Ayala and after watching both Saint Paul and Amat, I hope you guys are ready this isnt an ordinary Saint Paul team from the past. Good Luck this season
Just wanted to make a comment on coaching at the high school level. From experience of having to leave a school to beable to get my son into a better sports program. Some athletic directors have no shame in hiring just anyone to run a program and a principal who will let it go on. How are you going to hire a Varsity coach to step on a baseball field if the only coaching they've done is football. Would you put a Golf coach in charge of a basketball team or a Tennis coach in charge of water polo team if they knew nothing of the game? A coach that does not know the game can hurt a kid physically and mentally. I've seen it happen to the students in the Santa Fe High community. They hire just because they're friends. Just for the paycheck. Not because they know the game. Believe me Santa Fe has had great athletes come through it but you can tell which sports have the coaching experience. Wrestling, football, softball, girls basketball and track. Santa Fe Springs is a baseball community with all the little leagues around Santa Fe High, so you would think that they would hire a top notch varsity baseball coach to bring out the best in these kids. You can't just throw anyone out there. You can ruin kids arms (which has happened in the past) if you don't know the game and how to take care of them. You have to have pitching, batting and fielding coaches. It's a game of technique. I hope that someone from the high school reads this and thinks about it. Academically they are a good solid school. Can you imagine if they cleaned up their act in the athletic side? People would actually be beating down the doors to go there.
It seems your predisposition is all knotted up. Her&Him SP is too well know and it’s too late for surreptitious. This year’s baseball season is going to be great. I have a cousin at El Rancho, look out for him; he’ll be at USC someday like the Flores brothers. Listen Amat’s team is talented and your school who I don’t like has no chance. No more nice guy.
Audacity; you started with an (chauvinistic) statement, the right people read this blog, and going very much against what is thought to be sensible or reasonable. I ask are your thoughts premeditated. Should a parent conjure-up assumption on people they don’t know? If you have self pride, dignity your kids will possessed it for the game or in life. Remember where ever you are there you are!!!!!!!
to sports fan,
Maybe I'm hoping the right people read this blog. I agree with you comments, I wanted to hear from everyone so that whoever logs in can get the message. And players, if you're reading this, you can do the right thing too, whether a coach asks you to clean up the bad language or not, just do it to maintain self pride, dignity for the game.
SP is notorious for its appalling comments towards other schools. And yes SP has a choice they have always choose where it’s more advantageous for success. So they can use in recruiting. But the light is on!!!!!!!!!!
Her&Him; Consequential your prayer is ridiculous, not of considerable importance or significance value because GOD has, oh you wouldn’t understand! Amat’s win will seem catastrophic but it just an easy win for us.
That question about foul language has to be the most outrageous request coming from someone tied to the number one perpetrator; SP coaches have a long history with profanity. Her&Him you should talk with SP coaches and see if zero tolerance can be implemented, but with the culpable right in front of you it’s ludicrous. Profanity is not tolerated by rule on the field.
Roger: Is there a requirement that Varsity
Coaches have a college degree and/or teaching
credential? Especially in this environment
of layoffs and cutbacks?
Sports Fan:
First of all, St. Paul is D IV this year. Do you think they have a choice in which division they are placed in? The league they are in (Del Rey) was placed in D V.
Your hatred for St. Paul is obvious and I feel it doesn't matter what they do, you'll hate them anyway. So I guess it doesn't really matter what we say here or what our teams do.
Nothing wrong with having passion for your own team but to hate on a team and its kids is just wrong.
I'll admit it, I'm a big St. Paul homer but I also appreciate the other area teams. Did you got out and watch La Mirada basketball this year? Montebello water polo? La Habra football? Santa Fe wrestling? Then you'd be a true sports fan.
to Anonymous
I am not trying to disparge Coach Morales. To say he has not been successful at St. Paul would be ignorant.
I just would rather not think about St. Paul for various reasons. One of which is they were in Division 5. To me that is ridiculous. A few years ago the Girls basketball team, playing in a tiny divison, made the CIF Finals and lost to Twentynine Palms. Come on!!! Boy, those girls got so much press coverage.
On the other hand, for example, you have Whittier High School several years ago having a great league championship season and they have to play CIF powerhouse (before Fitsimmons' arrival) Villa Park and Whittier loses 3 to 2. (baseball)
Did Villa Park go on and win it? Maybe
Villa Park has not done as well since Fitzimmons' arrival. One of his St. Paul teams also made the CIF Division 5 finals (I think) Now he is facing much better coaching!!!
I can name many more examples.
St. Paul in the playoffs is beating teams like Ontario Christian (in Division 5)and other local ball clubs are facing much better programs.
It is mostly for those reasons that I prefer to forget St. Paul.
Now, that Division 3 Football Championship beating a powerhouse Dominguez was the real deal.
The real deal because they are playing in a good Division, as they should be, not the caliber of much weaker division teams.
OK! Yesterday St. Paul lost to a previous Division 4 power Pacifica. They battled La Serna in a game that could have been won by either team. These are the teams that they should be playing in the playoffs, not the likes of Ontario Christian, Twentynine Palms, etc.
If they perform well in Division 4 this year, I will give them more credit. But can they?
Mr. Murray: I vote for 'Poet' to do some writing at the paper if you and Campo get behind on the local coverage. He's in-tune to our local kids and writes well and optomistic on young players.
Got my "comic relief" this morning - thanks BA lancer! I'm so praying the Swordsmen sweep Lancers this season!
Here's a question for coaches and parents. What are your rules on the field as regards to foul language? As a parent - my opinion is 'please have zero tolerance'. There is never a good time to swear profanity, but when you are in the vicinity of parents, students, grandparents, young bro/sisters,I say no-no-no, come-on. I think if I was coach, I'd bench a player that said the big four letter word in front of the fans, and ump. I expect better, and everyone can do better. What say you-all? Boys will be boys? or can we make our corner of the world stay wholesome as long as possible.
North Orange County??????????
I played in the early 80’s at ST Paul and my kids from my second wife attended and played sports in the late 90’s to 2000s for SP, now “her&him” if you’re cognizant and a bit objective you would and should concur that the school has denigrated immensely, the shenanigans where and maybe are still too much. I have hope for years that change would come, but from what the reports are, I strongly recommend that parents send their kids to public schools and just enjoy them. Education is much more adequate there. Kids will learn when their parents are behind them.
It is really early. Last year's la serna team started 1-3, and wound up 20-9, so you can't jump too far, too fast with trying to assess how the season will go. But, based on last year's performances in CIF, DRL is as good or better than San Antonio, and would battle Miramonte. I actually think that the good D4s this year are as good as the top tier D1 and D2 teams. Northview and El Toro would be an even game. Sierra is very tough But my point in these posts is that our local guys are just as good as the kids in other areas and leagues. Hey, LS beat Crespi last year, and then lost a totally even game 2-1 on a 6th inning 2-run homer to South Hills in the quarters, who almost beat SO Notre Dame for the championship at Dodger Stadium, losing 4-2. Whittier beat Notre Dame in a tournament last year (the DRL #4 team). Cal did great and knocked off higher ranked and "bigger name" teams to get to the quarterfinals. Heck yea, DRL is good! Baseball is baseball, and lots of teams have at least a few kids who could possibly play at the next level, are well coached, and will battle you. DRL is no different.
The passion for baseball is high in the SGV- Fred's blog gets brutal sometimes- so they think their leagues are better. But it's okay. Fred and Roger's blogs are great for baseball nuts like me and others to share what we know and support our teams. With all of the crap going on with the economy and in people's lives and problems, we're lucky to know and enjoy high school baseball. This time of our lives and our ballplayer kids is precious. Good luck and God bless all of our great Whittier area baseball players.
Poet it sure seems like you’re bias towards DRL players. Please keep it real. Because there’re life beyond that league.
Well Her&Him I see you’ve been knotted up (ha ha not kidding) nice is a perception to some.
Let me put it nice, St.Paul should abandon all “boy” sports and let the girls have the school.
Can you believe it? 36 posts on baseball and not football???? :)
Batter! Batter!:
To add to Sports Fan's list, St. Paul baseball (CIF Finalist last year) is coached by a teacher. So your effort to try and disparge Coach Morales is failing.
Coach Morales is well respected by the school, the players, the alum's and the community.
Quit trying to start stuff.
From Fred R's blog at the SGV Trib. He ranks the local baseball leagues in the SGV. I'm biased but I think the Del Rey should be higher. Where do you think the DRL falls?
The Sierra League has been extremely impressive, with all teams combining for a 17-4 overall record. Damien has started 3-0 in the Chino tournament and will face Yucaipa next. Chino Hills (4-1), Chino (3-1), Ayala (3-1) and Diamond Bar (2-1) all have just one loss and of course Glendora (3-0) is undefeated.
1. Sierra League - See argument above
2. Miramonte - Diamond Ranch, Bonita and Charter Oak. That's enough to make a great three-team race.
3. Del Rey - Bishop Amat, St. Paul and La Salle are all legitimate in what is simply a three-team race.
4. San Antonio - Maybe this sounds crazy, but Nogales, West Covina and Walnut are off to good starts, and there is still South Hills. They might lack the heavyweight punch, but there are no gimmies.
5. Valle Vista -- After Northview and San Dimas there is a big drop. Covina and Baldwin Park need to play better to improve this ranking.
6. Montview League - Gladstone is 3-0 and Azusa will be there at the end. Right now they're just a notch above the MVL.
7. Mission Valley League -- So far, all six teams struggling in tournaments
to BATTER! BATTER!
Like I mentioned a few weeks ago. If you would take all of the "final four" teams in the CIF Playoffs (football, basketball, baseball, etc) you would find that 90% or more of them are credentialed teachers!!
Well, I believe 85 to 90 % of Head varsity coaches at public schools are teachers.
They knew they loved the sport. They played the sport their whole life. They knew that in order to stay in that sport ITwould help if they became a teacher. Some are probably pretty good teachers in the classroom also because they know how to handle teenagers.
Some Local Schools having at least reached the "final four" in the CIF playoffs lately include:
Whittier High School's Boys and Girls Water Polo teams (both coached by classroom teachers)
Calhi's 2007 Football team (coached by a math teacher)
Powerhouse La Habra Football over the past 8 years = 3 or 4 CIF Championships (coached by a teacher)
Bishop Amat Baseball (coached by a teacher)
Santa Fe Football (coached by a teacher)
Wilson Football = final four about 5 years ago (coached by a history teacher
La Serna's Boys and Girls water polo teams (both coaches are teachers)
Santa Fe wrestling (coached by a teacher)
La Serna's softball teams (coached by a teacher)
La Mirada's basketball team (coached by a teacher)
Schurr's championship football team (coached by a teacher)
ENOUGH SAID!!!!!!!!! THE PROOF IS IN THE RESULTS!!
Good coaching involves teaching.
Casey Morales left La Serna to come back to where he belonged at St. Paul his alma matter and has done a great job coaching the baseball team there and just as good a job at coaching football
Thanks for reminding me I'm on the computer too much, Alumni. I check a stock account every day and am so despressed, that I check the blog to give me good vibes on our kids playing sports, or sometimes, comic relief on the really "out there" comments.
I love boys baseball and girls basketball.
I saw Calhi beat our SP girls softball. The coach has a fairly young team I believe so he'll get a chance to mold them into a competitor. And good for Calhi, if my two kids weren't at SP, they'd be there so I've always kept an eye on their teams.
Thanks for the info, Roger. Ronnie Palacios has been a great outfielder since he was a PONY kid. He was on an amazing all star team with lots of local kids who have tremendous speed who're key players now for their schools, and he was the fastest. Pioneer will surprise this year, I predict. They have a few good guys. The DRL is not a pushover- last year's CIF performances proved that- and this year will proabably be as tight as ever.
Player: Good one! LOL... Yea, I love my kid, but I love baseball. Sometimes the order gets switched around...
Another possible college level ability kid from LS I neglected to mention is DeCorte. He's a darn good pitcher.
Wow her&him you sure post a lot I hope you have another job? But like you say “just a mom” now what sport are you really in too? I know you like blogging. And seem to have a lot of info. About St Paul.
I believe California killed ST Paul in softball 9to1? They might need more than a coach? Her&Him they need a little more of something?
Yo, Poet: The decision was made over the summer that Ronnie Palacios would play center field because that was where his future is. When he was played shortstop, he was an outstanding athlete playing shortstop, not an outstanding shortstop. In center field, he is special. The ease with which he covers ground and makes plays reminds one of Ken Griffey Jr. At the plate, it's Darryl Strawberry's swing.
To Poet-
Thanks for all the info on the players. You sure know
a lot about the local players, especially those La Serna players. Thanks.
How about the local coaches? It seems there are a lot of former La Serna players coaching in the Del Rio League, especially at Cal Hi: Jacob Ferris, Michael Gomez and Johnny Navarrete. And at Whittier High,
former La Serna pitcher Marty Flores is the Varsity
Baseball Coach. Why doesn't the district bring them all back to their respective schools? It sure would make a lot of sense. And provide a little more history for the teams.
Additionally, whatever happened to Casey Morales, baseball coach at St. Paul? Didn't he coach at La Serna for a couple of years? He must not have done a very good job because he didn't last very long. Someone said something about a college degree requirement. But I don't believe high school coaches need a degree or teaching credential. They're not real teachers.
Poet, thanks for the info. Your insights are great.
Poet:
You seem to have a good feel for the local teams. Would love to see you post your thoughts on each of the teams in the area. Expand on what you've already written.
Thanks, Dad. Those were very kind words and I
appreciate your support.
to Poet: thanks for sharing names of players to watch. Sounds like you've been real involved in the local youth leagues. Maybe an up-and-comer will get an opportunity and surprise everyone, too.
to prep fan: SP has a new softball coach (since beginning of September. He's a former MLB player, Craig Worthington. I don't have a softball player, but I did sit in on one of his parent talks and I liked what he had to say, focused, seems like he could inspire players. Positive feedback so far from the couple of parents I know.
And to that BA Lancer - get a thesaurus and be more creative with the slurs (ha ha, just kidding). Let's be nice.
SP beat Corona Centennial 8-5 today
herandhim: Lots of local kids could possibly play college baseball somewhere, but most will not be able to play at the local schools because of the competition at D1, D2 and the good NAIA and D3's like Azusa Pacific and Chapman. Even the local community colleges are very competitive; just being All Del Rio is no guarantee of playing at the next level, even up at Rio Hondo. If a kid is willing to go to another state with less competition, there could be more opportunities. College baseball, even D3, is a pretty high level game in So Cal.
Lots of the kids from St Paul- Encinas, Willson, Carillo, Chico, Oddo, and probably others like the good sophomore could play somehwere.
At Cal, Gallardo is a really good player. The kid they lost, Perez, could probably play college ball at some level.
At LS, Burke (and sophomore Connor), Montoya, Sanchez, Langstaff, Baskin and Valenzulea could have a shot to play somehwere next year. Ashton, a sophomore, is a dude who can definitely hit at the next level.
At Santa Fe, Fuentes is one of the best players in the league, and along with Ben Burke, might be the only guy with a shot to play D1. SF usually has athletes, so I'm sure we'll be hearing about soem college level guys.
At Pioneer, Ronnie Palacios has college level skills. He is an incredible center fielder, but being their best player, he's always pitching and playing short, where he is not college level. The kid can run like the wind! Ramos is a good player also.
ER may have some guys, but they lost a lot. Their shortstop from last year is playing at Rio.
To give an idea, I am only aware of 4 players from last year's entire DRL who are still playing. Tough playng at the next level for a whole lot of reasons, including the competition.
Our area has some good baseball, and it always has. Good luck to the local kids and be safe out there---pitchers, keep your gloves up!
By saying St. Paul should beat a good Del Rio team by 5 or 6 runs you are implying they aren't that good. As teams listed in the Top 10 in the preseason CIF D III polls La Serna and Cal Hi shows that others think that those 2 teams are pretty good. With St. Paul ranked #3 in D IV we should celebrate the fact that we have some pretty damn good baseball teams in the area.
I realize that most of the posters here don't reflect the majority of La Serna fans as well as many of St. Paul posters don't reflect the majority of St. Paul supporters.
Most of us appreciate good baseball when we see it and we aren't about hating on other teams. Some of our faithful tend to go overboard with their passion.
I know kids on both the La Serna and St. Paul teams and both teams have some very special players.
If that football and baseball player is who I hope it is not, it's a pretty big loss for Cal.
to Here We go Again: I never wrote I am against recruiting. I am supporting the concept that "schools that recruit have a huge advantage over other schools".
And I do realize that many of these players are not recruited. They choose St. Paul.
to HerandHim:
Well that running back from Diamond Ranch (2007) drove pretty far and so did the 2 Mayfair players in 2008.
And Anonymous: I have never suggested the quality of baseball is not good in the Del Rio League. La Serna and Calhi making the CIF Quarterfinals last year supports that.
Yes, baseballs been good to me, but I'm blessed with Softballers. What's St.Paul,Cal,Whittier, and La Serna up to?
The 09 baseball team will be another Casey Morales flop. He is the area's best coach because of the players not him. They will lose 3 out of 3 to Amat. They will also lose in CIF.
the last two comments, really good. About baseball, not namecalling, lets keep it that way. Who's looking good to go on to play at the college level at everyone's teams? SP catcher? How many other teams have a Freshman varsity. What about Whittier Christian? How do they fall in with the local leagues?
Not much differnece between St. Paul and La Serna. Considering that Casey has done a good job of building the program (part of which is recruiting at a private school, right?), credit is due to the La Serna team for competing with his stacked team. The Lancers are competitive with one of the stronger teams in CIF this year. In reality, almost all of the best kids on both teams were either Whittier PONY, Murphy Ranch LL or Whittier LL products, and most played lots of games of high level travel ball, so these kids have played against each other for years. The Whittier area, like the SGV, OC, the South Bay, the SF Valley, etc has always produced good baseball teams and players. The current area kids are no different.
Some great pitching the other day: Burke was at 86-88 mph and struck out 12. Gonzales showed that he is one of the best sophomore pitchers around. Very polished for a young pitcher. Encinas was athletic and throwing high 80's also. A very good high school baseball game. La Serna may not be the best team in CIF this year, but they most definitely could beat any team in CIF on a given day, and like last year's team they battle for every out, so they should do very well in teh DRL this year. As for St. Paul: watch out Bishop Amat!
You didn't take them seriously??? Maybe you should have started after Burke recorded your first 6 outs by K's. Your team is good but only your first 2 hitters can hit. You were out hit by LA SERNA!! With all the potential D1 players I here you have you should have killed them. La Serna is good and young, they will get better. Both teams will go far in the playoffs. Spare me how great St Paul is. You struck out 12 times and scored 2 runs on 2 sac flys and 2 balks. You guys are something else.
St.Paul slime you better be serious because Amat. Is ready and loading up. You or your team won’t make the CIF this year. We love knotting you guys around in any sport. So pray eat your Wheaties and go to bed early! I am sure you know that’s not going to help but you have to try something. (Hey Batter!)
Sports Fan:
I promise I will learn how to spell if you work on your sentence structure.
It is too bad you don't support your local teams. The Del Rio teams are better than you give them credit for. It says a lot for a program like La Serna to play games against the likes of St. Paul and to play in tournaments like the Newport Elks. Unlike your football team that always plays a cupcake schedule so that they can get eliminated in the playoffs,
Part of the reason St. Paul likes to play teams like La Serna because of the high level of competition it gives them. That is why they play in this tournament, the San Diego Lions and why they invite quality teams like La Serna and El Rancho to their tournament.
Strong teams in the area is good for all teams. Good local talent brings the team in the area a lot of attention which is good for a lot of the kids as it gives them exposure they might not normally get. Look at the attention the San Gabriel Valley gets because of teams like Northview, Amat, South Hills, Cahrter Oak and Glendora to name a few.
To: Sports Fan and Watcher,
I don't know what kids you're thinking are driving in to St. Paul, but most are from the local feeder schools (public or private). What do you call players from, say LaMirada area that choose to attend LaHabra High because they like their football program better or Pioneer High that transfer to CalHi, or to Whittier for waterpolo, etc. Have they been "recruited"? This 'recruit' accusation just drives me crazy! Every school, private or public, have athletes coming and going all the time. Everyone knows someone's kid that changes school for miscellaneous reasons. Maybe your team has 4 catchers on varsity, but the school five minutes east has two. Maybe the kid makes his own decision and figures a transfer might give them more playing time. That's what the district transfer form was designed for. Looking forward to this years baseball season. Go Swordsmen!!
Maybe the kid you are reffering to as a recruit was having a lot of trouble in his old school and had no choice but to leave..........now he can take his problems to St. Paul.........I wish him the best of luck... stay away from the trouble...its in EVERY SCHOOL PUBLIC OR PRIVATE......
Not the "recruit" word again. You bloggers are always using that word while disparaging our school. How are they getting these kids to show up when we are so bad? There's an old expression "You WISH you were a Swordsmen". Maybe the baseball player referred to is just making his wish come true. Maybe he wants to know his fellow students instead of milling around a gigantic campus with thousands of students. Maybe he's a football guy, too, and came because Coach Ancich is back. Who knows, but the baseball team certainly didn't need to "recruit" anybody. They're talented already and returning from CIF final game last year. PEACE and GO BASEBALL SEASON!! GOOD LUCK AND GOOD HEALTH TO ALL THE LOCAL TEAMS.
Knowing the coaches and the players from St. Paul, I know they take each opponent very seriously. To suggest otherwise does a great disservice to our team and also illustrates that those particular bloggers do not really know the team.
Also, to say La Serna is not in our talent league again illustrates the ignorance of some of these bloggers. La Serna is a very good team and will go far this year. There is some good ball being played in the Del Rio this year. Watch out for Cal Hi and The Ranch as well.
Yes, the Swordsmen are very talented this year. They have a deep pitching staff and bench. Having 8 returning starters from a CIF finalist team raises the expectations for this team. They will have to take each opponent seriously and play hard every game just to keep pace with Northview and Bishop Amat.
All of you praising St paul baseball: When a school draws and recruits from all over the area, they should beat a good Del Rio League team by 5 or 6 runs. Open recruiting versus public school with boundaries defining who can attend. No Brainer. St. Paul should have better players. By season end, we should know who has the better coaching staff by comparing Gonzales's 2 seasons at La Serna with Morales's 2 seasons at La Serna. So far it is not close. Advantage Gonzales.
Whether you took them lightly or not does not matter. Can't you understand, St Paul has kids from all over the place and they still win by one.
St. Paul: you should be comparing yourself to Amat, St john bosco, servite, etc. But you do not. Why?
YOU KNOW THE ANSWER!! AND LAST, LEARN HOW TO SPELL!!
Is St Paul at it again? On the bench for St Paul Baseball vs La Serna was a (former?) California High baseball player.
Did Nieto run him off the team or are the Swordsman recruiting again. Anyone know the story?
For the fan that says St. Paul didn't take them seriously.
Look, St. Paul is a great program. They have great players. They were up 4-1 going into the 7th. La Serna battled back and tied the game up.
Coach Morales will be the first to tell you that his team always takes their opponent seriously, regardless of who it is.
OK the kid made mistakes; but his heart is right and la serna isn’t in our talent league, you have to be honest right? You’re right any team can beat any team but la serna lost their chance and won’t get another. I mean the probability when the schools play again the winner will be the same but a larger score. Opportunity is not enough, you need ability.
"SP! said:
We realy didnt take them seriously , but next time it wont be that close. I think our school would love to play them every year and show the wittier people what their missing. So next!"
SP-Next time, at least turn on your spell check, or have someone proof read your text.
When you say we, does that mean you're a player? If so, you "really" are an embarr"ass"ment to your program and education system. You minimize your teams hard work and integrity by saying you didn't take them seriously. Big mistake in any competitive sport. Any team on any given day can and will be beaten....If you're not a player....see above.
I know this is a blog about baseball, but is there any track & field news? Who are the teams to beat in the area? Who are the student/athletes to watch out for?
that freshman kid was throwing up before the game. didn't affect him though
We realy didnt take them seriously , but next time it wont be that close. I think our school would love to play them every year and show the wittier people what their missing. So next!
t freshman kid from st paul is ligit i got to watch him friday at la habra and sat vs la serna and let me tell u thatkid did not get rattled with pressure even though the other teams were trying hard to get in his head keep up the good work look foward to seeing this kid keep growing and the st paul bb team is very good
