Big wins for Santa Fe, El Rancho in DRL race

| | Comments (35) |

The Del Rio League baseball race tightened a notch as Santa Fe and El Rancho, seemingly destined to battle for third place, stepped up with victories over DRL leaders La Serna and California.
Santa Fe rode the pitching of senior Michael Muniz and sophomore Marcos Casillas, and home runs from junior Chris Esparza and senior Javier Saenz to a 5-1 win over La Serna.
El Rancho downed Callifornia, 5-2, behind the 6-hit pitching of Joey Moran and Esteban Soto and three runs batted in by Marcus Aldecoa.
La Serna and California still share the league lead with 7-2 marks. Santa Fe improved to 5-4 in third place, and El Rancho is 4-5 in fourth.
Whittier, a 6-0 winner over Pioneer Friday, is 3-6 and Pioneer dropped to 1-9.

The last time Pioneer had a League MVP? ??? Well Palacios is the best player in the league by far!!

Cal vs La Serna Huge week

An article from last week or the week before on Schurr baseball still has a chance to make the playoffs. Whittier beat Schurr by 20 runs!

That Almont league is miserable.

This is a sports blog. The "Distinguished School" argument should be on an education blog, not on the sports blog.

sports fan original said:

Who ever said La Serna is not a good educational institution. I am talking baseball and an advantage that an athlete has if he did not enter school according to the state recommended system (start one year after that).

If Ben, who I know is a great athlete, did start according to the state system (like about 95 % do), then thank you for clearing that up for me. And, there is a system! I was told that Ben was older. I never suggested his parents are not great people. Never! I never stated there was something "wrong" with it either. I only spoke of the very possible advantages that age brings. I witnessed it in my life.

Of course their are younger players that are as good as some older players. Of course.

I never indicated La Serna was cheating or not a good place for education. Some of you got off topic.

I know people who held their kid back in 5th grade for the purpose of bettering their son in sports. The parents are still my friends. They are regular people. And their son was always a good athlete. But at 18 1/2 or 19 he is better, thicker, and smarter than he was a year ago.

And the parent thing and Manzo; there is not much anyone could say to make me believe they were not very much involved.

Anonymous,

I wouldn't be saying that 5-4 SP win over LSHS is considered, in your words, "[taking] lshs lancers to the wood shed." But a win is a win, no matter how ugly it may have been.

As for your remark, "Ok let’s not start lying about 4 california distinguished school":
LSHS California Distinguished School

1996
2003
2009 (recently announced)

One says he is 18 another says he may have just turned 19. If he did just turn 19 then he IS 1 YEAR OLDER.

It is not against CIF rules! If it was no one would do it.

What the Eff: If he is 19 and you do not think it is an advantage then you are the moron.

If he is 18 and will be for a few more months then he entered school at the right time.

I never said he was 19!!!! I asked because that is what I hear around.

One thing I did call though. Magallenes finally started Palacios and look at the results: IT IS SIMPLE COACH: WHEN YOU HAVE NO PITCHING YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT, TAKE THE GREAT ATHLETE AND MAKE HIM A STARTER!!! NOT A CLOSER!! It is not like you are winning all kinds of games and you need a closer to finish!

Put him on the hill in the first and let your competitor go to work

No improprieties "What the Eff". I am just curious what Ben's age is. I never stated La Serna is breaking rules. You may need to take a little reading comprehension.

Poet: Baseball experience is not the issue. Human Phyiology is. The maturing of the body, etc. Question. If you were a coach, would you rather have an older team or a younger team? No brainer

Thank You all for replying.

still read all the junk about LSHS - sour grapes -
Ben Burke, ALL the Burke kids have been raised to be outstanding athletes and humans - Great Job Parents!
Last I looked this is only his 4th year of high school, he has just turned 18 and will have great choices for next year...enough already.

Matt has had a good season at Rio along with Victor, Rio Hondo finished up as confrence champs - Not that it is anywhere in the paper! But it's wonderful to read that LSHS Baseball has continued to grow and be sucessful
Good Luck guys in the rest of the season & post season as well.
Good job coaches & players

What the Eff said:

Sports Fan original,

Call on CIF. Hand them your evidence of improprieties LSHS has committed so that they can investigate. And after all is said and done, don't be surprised if CIF ends up handing LSHS an award for Great School Character and Sportsmanship, to go along with its fourth California Distinguished School.

Ben Burke is 18 yrs old. He was the Del Rio league MVP in football and may be the MVP in Baseball. He leads the league or close in several categories and broke almost every passing record at LS. When was anyone the MVP in 2 major sports? He is a good kid with good grades who handles himself with respect and plays the game the right way. All athletes should play the game like he does.

What the Eff said:

Sports Fan original,

Ben is not 19. What a moron you are.

Come on people... Encinas pitched a PERFECT game at the HS LEVEL thats quite an feat, and deserves props regardless of the opponent. Way to go Encinas.....

Is there any more unrated and undertalked about player in the Del Rio League than Kevin Gallardo (sr) Cal High?
Here is another undertalked about senior player doing well.

Fransico Fuentes (Santa Fe)

Sports fan: Burke, like quite a few high school seniors, is 18 or perhaps just turned 19. Soto was also 18 last year, so your analogy is false. It is not nearly as big a deal as you claim. Nowadays, with the 100's of games of travel ball the majority of these kids played over the last few years, some of the young kids are just as good as the older guys, and it has always been so- if a kid can pitch, he can pitch. Some 16-17 year olds are ready for the next level already. You can't over-generalize. Encinas has had some of the best stuff around since his freshman year. Gonzales over at St Paul, Casillas at Santa fe- they are sophomores and can compete very well. Burke has had a very consistent year, with good command and a consistently high 80's fastball. His season shouldn't be marred by some crap about him having an unfair advantage. Last I checked, this is his 4th year of high school, like his fellow seniors.

Sonambulist(hit your dictionaries!): The last sentence in your post is classic! Could not be said better!

burke is only 18 just like most of the kids he is playing against he wont be 19 until long after the season

Fan- sphs-Swordsmen ! said:

We all knew Bruke was held back a couple of years. Plus everyone knows la serna isn’t a baseball school. but I guess they will do anything. Schools should teach integrity and honesty. A schools who is so set on just trying to promote it self will never get away with it. St Paul’s baseball coach is one of the best in the State. That why the kids come.

big deal pitching a perfect game vs a JV squad.

Sports fan original said:

Dr Del Rio and Anonymous

Encinas is a real, real good pitcher. But Cantwell is the worst: 1 win and 16 losses. They are tiny.

And La Serna win a CIF Championship? Not!! The last time they did (about 1991) they had a pitcher named Adams, who pitched at Stanford. No Adams this year. They do not have the pitching to win it all in division 3.

Is Burke a year older than 95% of the players he is competing against. Big advantage at this young age. difference between 19 and 17 is huge.
It would be like bringing Victor Soto back for another year!!

That age factor may have caught up to his older brother when he entered college. If he was older he also had a big advantage in high school. Then he had to go try and produce against a higher level of athlete, and they were his age. Much more stress. A "whole new ballgame"!!

If he his not, PLEASE RESPOND. He seems to have a few fans on this blog.

I do not mean to be negative. I am just stating facts. 19 year olds are usually competing in college right now. Yes he is one heck of an athlete, but he does have a big advantage. If he is 19, the family planned it well: for success in high school. Actually, is it fair to those student/athletes that entered school when they were 5 and ready mentally to enter to have to compete against athletes that their parents waited an extra year so they could have greater success on the sports field ?

I do agree on one thing. An older player has an advantage and possibly a better chance for scholarship. A good way to save a lot of $$$$.

Somnambulist said:

Hard to ignore all the rhetoric eluding to improprieties at La Serna's baseball program. So what's going on that is so egregious it compromises the well being of the student-athletes? If you have FIRST HAND experience or information, let's hear it. Otherwise it's just a bunch of whiny, bitter, narrow minded, uneducated coulda-shoulda-woulda beens pissing & moaning.

it appears you know whats going on over at lancerville . so obvious , everyone is so clueless.the anonymous coach needs some new stuff to write on his bio so coaching a league championship or cif champs would make the made up over exaggerated info even better.

I stand corrected. There was something in the paper this morning.

Wow, he fans 15 of 21 batters! This game comes on the heels of a one hit shutout he pitched in his last game.

Gabe Encinas of St. Paul pitches a perfect game against Cantwell and no mention in the paper?

I know Murray/Campa can't be at every game but you would think they would of least mentioned something.

Are you really a "DR"???...must be a proctologist with the kind of scatological babble you've been spewing. Not one positive contribution to any of these blogs from you. Just cynicism, finger pointing, and poorly worded jabs at people....enough. OFF with your head.

On a more positive note: 6 games left in DRL Baseball, the teams are coming into their own and should make for a very interesting race to the 1, 2 & 3 spots for a CIF berth.

Cal High Dad said:

I watched Joey Moran of El Rancho pitch a gem against us. He hit his spots everytime he got in trouble. And they had a some monster keys hits, to go along with some solid defense. Props to the young men over there for rebounding and making things tighter in the race..

Yes we may perhaps lose that first playoff game but you surely can’t win it if you’re not in it. You got believe to achieve. Good luck Swordsmen, from a Don.

sports fan original said:

There was never a "real" co-coaching situation at La Serna. A couple (or few) "very important parents" wanted Manzo out and Gonzalez in. That is it!! One of those parents is actually on the staff now.

The school (who usually "listens and does" according to these parents) camouflaged the rest. It was done in a similar fashion as La Mirada Football.

Make no mistake about it Muschetti is the only head coach. Not Lynch.

It is good to see Santa Fe and El Rancho win over the league leaders.

Anyone in contact with Karl Perez. Get him to return to Cal and play football and come back to the baseball program with a new attitude.

He is one heck of a football player, and not playing is something he will remember the rest of his life.

DelRio6907 said:

dr???del rio, your selective observation leaves much to be desired. La Serna's overall record is indicative of a program being challenged by the coaches. Seeking out strong competition in the pre-season is beneficial to a developing program. This is evident in the "League Standings"...who's on top?....exactly. Now take a look at the other telling stat that really sets LS apart: Points For=137, Points Against=101. They're the only Del Rio team with more PF than PA, and by a considerable margin.... So not sure what your point was, but maybe it's time to renew your crackerjack doctorate;-)

Ok er why make the playoff you just lose again ! watch the Swordsmen and how we do it.

El Rancho doesn’t look to three peat as league champs, and La Serna / Cal Hi are two very strong teams this year and rightfully so. I think them and St Paul should go deep into the playoff we all hope. The good thing we still have a lot of games left before the macabre dry spell and then its football time. THANK GOD.

To my young ER dons, it’s going to be tough the rest of the season, but let’s try and solidified that last playoff spot. Youth is well serve when courage and valor is escalated, so let’s see that rambunctious spirit.

Great job Marcus Aldecoa; I’m sorry I wasn’t able to get off work to see some timely hitting we (El Rancho) so desperately need. To all area baseball fans wouldn’t it be nice if at least half of the HS games could be played at night so the community could support their local kids. For some of us 3:15 is killer, some people have to jump through hoops and switch hours just to make a game. Oh well……………… go DONS!!
