Cantwell's Smolin to take head football job at newcomer Redlands Citrus Valley High School

| | Comments (37) |

Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary High School athletic director and head football coach Pete Smolin confirmed late Friday evening he is leaving the school to become the head football coach at the new Citrus Valley High School in Redlands.
Kim Taylor, the Cardinals' defensive coordinator, will replace Smolin as head coach.
Assistant athletic director Omar Villalta will move into the athletic director's role.
"It will be a smooth transition period," Smolin said. "Everything, everyone is already in place. The (coaching) staff will remain intact."
Smolin said Citrus Valley will be the third high school school in the Redlands School District and will have an enrollment of about 1,500 students made up of freshmen and sophomores the first year, building to "about 3,000."
"We'll play a freelance schedule to start with," Smolin said, "and eventually we'll be in Division II (Inland Division)."

I just heard another Montebello Offensive Line coach quit the Varsity team this past weekend, that is 2 coaches in one week. At least no one quit under Coach Shah!!!

Was at the Oiler game seems like a very long season ahead. I thought this was a change for the better seems like the same old thing. All the hype about these coaches, seems like an average staff to me.

This Thursday June 11 is the annual Oilers Blue/Gold Game @ 5pm. Come witness for yourself the chemistry between the coaches and players, it is easy to point fingers without seeing for yourself. Roger, I hope you can also cover this event for all the Oiler fans....

MHS parent said:

I have been reading these and I'm wondering why are people starting with these comments. My son is a senior and he is proud to be coached by all these coaches. He said that all the coaches get along well and they have all been on the same page with the kids and eachother. I understand friction will happen but from the kids standpoint they are excited of what is going on the field. Let the crying stop and remember were all here for the same reason. I'm sure all the MHS family will rally together as we always do.

Oiler Pride 84" said:

This is really sad what I'm reading I myself have been to several practices to see whats going on. I must say I am very impressed with the new coaching staff and most of all with the connection that the coaches are making with the kids. Its evident and very obvious that the kids are eager to learn and have a sense of pride that I haven't seen in along time. Sometimes we all need a kick in the butt and hard work to get us into the right direction to participate. As for the age of the O.C. does it really matter? I don't think it does, seeing the O.C. first hand I beleive he knows what he's doing. I spoke with an old MHS coach myself and he told me that the O.C. is doing his job. At the end of the day we all want to improve the program and WIN.

Go MHS lets have a great year.

If you are crying already, it may be best to "take your kid to that other school". Make it Cantwell!! He can play at that tiny and weak program.

Returning starters from so - so team are not that good. Parents like you destroy programs.

You know that`s pretty sad to know that coaches can`t be openned minded to something new. This years staff has tried to include you staff members from last year, but your not open to change, well it`s time to go. Pete keep on doing your thing with those kids and Iknow you will be successful. The kids our responding just fine. I would think your son has worked his but off to get this offense down for these kids to know. Who ever is openning their mouth needs to grow up and move forward.
Go Oiler 09

First of all I'm a MHS parent and we are so pleased with what is going on for our Oiler football players. I'm sure everyone might not be thrilled but I do understand Oiler football is going in a different direction and there are some people who don't like it. Old coaches, kids who don't want to be held accountable and as a parent of a son who loves football I just want to say "thank you". I asked my son about these things that are being said and he laughed, Coach Peter is great with these kids and who cares if he's young. Let the boys get on the field and play and then you can make all the comments you want. We are very excited with whats going on at MHS. Go Oilers!!

Wow, I cant believe what I am reading, a bunch of sour grapes coming from a parent who's kid played on a team that has been 5 and 5 for the past 5 years. Amazing!! First of all let me start with Im sorry that montebello's old staff is upset that their toe's are being stepped on, GOOD if you are asked to do something and you have an excuse or you think it should be done differnt or this the way we have always done it here. Then Im glad that you are being told that is not the way things are going be done anymore, even if it does come from a 21 year old young MAN. Listen Montebello has had it's chance to win, do things right, bring a championship and now we complain about how it's being done.Remeber this staff has done those things and at a much higher level I might add. Peter Gonzalez is one of the smartest, well liked by his players and liked by coaches at least the smart one's that are not intimidated by his knowledge of the game. What should Pete have done, ask for the last years play book and have the old "O" corr run the offense, be serious this is what happens when you want things to change. What is the definition of insanity? doing the same things over and over (with the same old guys)and expect a different result. It Never happens so for all the old staff guys that are complaining, dont go away sad, Just go away. Remember it's not about you!!! it's about the program!!!

Here is what's really going on.

Scoop
Sounds like your source is a coach from last year’s staff that can't handle the pressure of actually having to be accountable to the kids. My son is a returnee also and we love what is going on! Who are you Johnny Macias or another disgruntled coach from last year. You never did anything at Montebello! My son is actually getting coached for the first time in his high school career. If you think the grass is greener. GO! PLEASE! cuz that attitude is what exactly what has been going on for years her. It sounds like that source can't hack it so he is knocking it. I also heard that same coach is going down to freshmen level! thank the lord! in my opinion he and all the staff from last year had their chance, and I am so relieved to get those coaches off the field. Maybe its you that has a problem with Peter, maybe its because you feel threaten by a 21 year that actually has more football knowledge than you. That is typical instead of embracing and learning; your ego will not let you humble yourself! Get used to it! New Oiler regime is now in place and they are FINALLY going to bring that thing you guys have been talking about for ages that you could never bring, PRIDE!

Scoop said:

Ok here`s the Scoop,

I just heard not from my son, but another source that one of the O-line coaches has stepped down from the Varsity team and will coach on the Freshmen level this season. From I was told he decided to step down because of the lack of planning, communication, and alienation from Offensive Coordinator Peter Gonzales. Now let me tell you I`ve met The Head Coach before and he is a nice guy who seems dedicated to taking Montebello to the next level, but come on what`s goin on? who else is going to leave? It`s like I stated on the last thread, Peter seems to be showing his lack of experience, maturity, and communication skills. Do I need to take my son to another school. My son is a returning starter and I would like for him to have an enjoyable senior season and hopefully make the playoffs. I don`t want him to regret anything about playing at Montebello. Maybe I will call Principal Shwartz or the AD Murphy to find out what`s going on.

Her`s what`s going on at Oilerville,

There are 120 kids out for spring and they our working very hard. My son is on the team and told me that there seems to be a little tension amongst the offensive staff. He feels that coach Peter Gonzales, the head coach son is trying to coach every position in practice ans stepping the toes of the other coaches. Peter I believe is only 20 years old and I think was named offensive coordinator. My question to his dad Pete how can you name a 20 year old kid as OC. I would think he lacks experience, possibly comunication skills, professionalism and most of all matuity in working with coaches and calling an offense. We at Oilerville want experience coaches who wiil guide our program to the nexy level, not use our team as a means to give a kid the rains to the team. Too many bad things can happen. nerves, game planning, game adjustments, patience and panic. Come on coach let your son coach a position and allow him some imput into offense, but not all, alienating the other coaches wil only bring strif, which is not good when trying to take the Oilers to the next level. Yo, if my son can sense it how many other players are seeing this. Pete do the right thing.

GO OILERS 09

you are obviously not the real Lawrence Rock.
If so, why didn't you mention that you were also one of the softball coaches who was involved in the decision making process?

lawrence said:

I just read my blog and let me clear some things. a jr. player who played for j.v last yr as a soph. came to play for us last yr when we lost our catcher in the playoffs. she did very well and adjusted well. this yr she is a jr and these coaches repay her by leaving her down in Jv. wow... she is fast, which we lack. she could of played outfield. leaving our starting catcher in. not in the outfield. now lets look at the starter we had and guess the reason why.... lives have been changed... because a young lady who should be playing varsity her jr yr will now get a letter her sr year. I witnessed girls work thier you know what off. and placed on j.v. our j.v team had 19 girls. unfair, and unbelievable. I think two or three could of played varsity. we had two frosh. preseason one pitched great , held her own. I thought we would have the best 1,2,3 combo which is rare in softball. another hit and played the outfield awesome. but the season roles around and they did not get a chance. im done for now, but i'll be back everyday till they are gone. or they block me out.

I wish the best of luck to both coach Smolin and Coach Taylor on their new beginnings.

By the way, what is going on in Oiler-ville, it has been a while since we have gotten an update on the new football program. Just curious if they have any passing league games coming up, so I can see for myself if the new coaching staff has turned the program around.

And rumor has it that a lot of the Schurr Coaches are gone this season to other programs, is this true?

so whats next said:

the head coach said nothing at senior day. and said nothing at the banquet. you coached girls for 4 yrs and couldnt think of anything to say. an award was given to a girl who did not make grades. when blanco was head coach girls who didnt make grades were not considered for post awards. the same problem the football team had. is now going to happen with softball. the girls know unfairness, and when two players have a better practice than the coaches you pay. why should they produce. the girls held some saturday practices to prepare for the new league. the coaches didnt show up. if im paying $6,000 and another $250 to play. give me and my DD a dedicated coach who knows what he is doing. not players. (although I loved the workout and dedication) p.s. coaches DD did not show up either. once again the school is not listening they laugh it off like its a joke. telling players that the same coaches are returning. even though they have complained. listen to the girls who pay your salary. if there is smoke in the woods, there's probably something about to catch fire.

lawrence said:

card dad, I dont know who you. but you know me cause my name is right there. we played st joes for the past 2 or 3 seasons and lost to them by no more than a run or two runs. and all our girls were frosh and sophs. now their sr's and jr's. so what are you talking about. dont disrespect these girls like that again. we have two girls going to div 1 colleges. and most likely a couple of more. so set the sails we rolling on baby. good luck and bye bye.

lawrence rock(concerned parent) said:

There has been a problem for years too bad. having great players and winning in div. six does not mean everything is going well. lives have been changed. positions have been changed. how do you put a 1st team all league catcher in the outfield? there were girls on j.v who could of filled in just fine.in fact one who came through for the team last year in the playoffs.there are frosh who could of played very well, with a little coaching. I say lives have been changed because seasons dont go away. you remember high school 4ever and what could of been. the 1st thing after Mr. Villalta changes his name plate to athletic director he should hire new softball coaches. parents see it. fans see it.umpires see it. and the girls see it and know it. all the parents that complained had a legit right too. with maybe one exception. I have coached this sport for 12yrs. rec level, travel, and h.s. so im not just talking out of my mind. cantwell has a chance for something huge, and will last for years if they make a change. period....

To parents and grandparents of CSHM behave yourselves and your kids will do the same. Hold your coaches to ethics and what’s good for your school. Unfairness in softball or any sport shouldn't’t be tolerated at all. This coming year could be better.

I think CSHM just stunk because now we are in a better league and play better teams. Its only going to get worse, CSHM is a division 12 team trying to play with D3 teams, its just not going to happen. People face reality we were overmatched and it showed during league. I am glad my daighter is graduating and wont be there to see this ship sink!

How can you say the softball team was doing fine when in fact you only won 1 league game! That's pathetic!! I guess that's what happens when a coach has a daughter on the team and with their own personal agenda and not in it for the betterment of the WHOLE team.

Can you say 'Nepotism'

Thankful future CSHM parent: said:

So glad to hear that the softball coaches are gone as well. Too bad the softball coaches didn't know how to lead that dream team to CIF! True, in the very start of the sofball season they were winning all their games and were impressing many schools. The pitchers were being rotated and gaining confidence. They were ready for anyteam. But the selfishness started within some parent's, player's and coaches. Pitching rotation pretty much became extinct and many other great players were becoming benchwarmers. I am now deciding within Bishop Amat or CSHM but I would truly love to have my freshman daughter start at CSHM next yr. A fresh new coaching staff is desperately needed at CSHM real quick!

concerned grandparent! said:

We all know that there was too much unfairness going on in the Cantwell softball team. To begin with from what I saw Mr.Smolin never had anything to do with softball and that was the problem. Coaches did whatever they wanted and made terrible decisions. Player's weren't given an opportunity to play and demonstrate their skills. Leadership, sportsmanship and respect should of been the #1 concern at CSHM softball but instead it all became an ugly battle amongst the player's/parent's. There was no control at all! Some parent's didn't complain they just seeked fairness and maybe some possible game victories. Many qualified players sat the whole season which cost the team to loose all but one league game. Very seldom was there ever a catcher/pitcher rotation. This season should of been outstanding and attractive for future softball players but instead it became very discouraging. This is definitely a wonderful move for all sports at CSHM Athletic Dept! Good Luck CSHM!

the softball team was doing just fine until a few selfish, not "concerned," parents started causing problems when their daughters did not play. fortunately (with the exception of #9) their daughters are graduating this year. with 9 of 10 returning starters back (including the starting DP), next year should be an improvement.

Moving forward, Coach Smolin was very good to the softball program over the years and will be missed. Good luck Pete!
