Fuentes' perseverance pays off
It wasn't a game-winner or even necessary for Santa Fe's 10-6 victory over Whittier today, but Francisco Fuentes' 21-pitch at bat might be evidence of the manner in which the Chiefs have approached the last half of the season.
After struggling early, they've regrouped and with a never-say-die attitude, have put themsevles in the thick of the hunt for a postseason playoff spot.
Fuentes' at bat against the Cardinals' Daniel Gomez came in the bottom of the six inning with the Chniefs leading, 8-6. It lasted 10 and a half minutes and ended when he hit a two-run home run to dead center field.
"He was down in the count early," coach Craig Campbell said. "Then he fouled off a couple of pitches, took a ball, fouled off a couple more pitches, took a ball. He finally reached a 3-2 count, and then hit the home run on the 21st pitch.
"It was a great battle on both ends, Gomez and Fuentes doing a great job."

To knuckle head sports fan original, Whittier Christian’s enrollment has dropped from 1300 to 700, maybe because of the decent academic institution? Plus Whittier Christian isn’t down the road= Forest Gump it’s a whole other city.” Jenny “

I believe the reason the enrollment at St. Paul has dropped drastically is because it is not a decent academic institution.
If you guys that are blogging are any "example" of who graduates from St. Paul, there is no way in the world parents who want their children to receive a good education would send their children to St.Paul. Especially with Whittier Christian down the road.
Whittier Christian costs a lot more (you get what you pay for) and the sports program cannot touch St. Paul's but at least they put out some intelligent kids. Well they were probably more intelligent going in also.
You continue to write about football and baseball, but after football and baseball what will you do? Work in a warehouse?
You are embarassing all the smart kids that go through St. Paul. For the sake of "St. Paul's old tradition = good school + good athletes" shut up
St Paul rules and owns Santa Fe Spring, there are no sports worth consideration outside SP, not baseball-football or checkers or marbles. We'll always represent our city.St Paul rules !!!!!
Congratulations Fuentes for making it to the all stars!!!!!!!!!!!
thats my cousin
El Rancho wins; pitcher #3 stood tough and did his part. El Rancho was down 3-0 and then began its come back to win 6-3, next Downey a tall order. My brother Dons; if the task seems tremendous, than victory will be euphoric. You’re in it to win it !!!
New Coaches : same old Santa Fe. Just beat Whittier and you are in. Instead another sub 500 season.
The athletes cannot do it alone. And they have them. If Santa just wins once in a while they probably would have had St.Paul's Encinas. Instead the best are kind of forced to leave.
Since Mark Kotsay: what one or two CIF wins, if that!! Kotsay: that was 1992 was it not?
Who do they hire? Players trained by Hendry. Come on Oviedo. Of course Hendry is not going to try and find a winner. It may hurt his ego!
Poor Santa Fe
First I'd like to congratulate my son for all the hard work he's put into his 4 yrs of high school. Secondly THANK YOU to all his teammates, mentors, friends and competitors. These have been the most nerve wrecking and exciting years. Both my husband and I will miss it.
Thank You All for the positive comments.
Fuentes' Mommy!
That super sophomore that hit the game winning RBI for El Rancho against Pioneer was “Rios”. Good luck today ER against Walnut.
Head to Head in league ER was 2-1 against SF... ER goes to the playoffs with DRL #3 spot.
So with Santa Fe’s lost do the Dons make the playoffs? If so when do the coaches find out? Plus I heard the kid who had the game winning RBI is only a sophomore but that could be wrong; one can’t believe everything that is said at the park. Good luck Dons!
I have to give props to Diego from Whittier. He was the hero for Whittier. As for Chieftans, keep your head up boys!
Santa Fe went down 4-2 against Whittier, Great win for the Dons!!!
El Rancho makes big comeback down 5 – 0, to win. I say Mr. #3 for Pioneer is a talent and maybe league’s MVP?.... Did Santa Fe win?
Fuentes has done a great job all year.. Good to see him getting some press, it's likely he'll play at the next level if he wants...
BTW where did all the La Serna This La Serna That posters go.. How about those Cal High boys?? Props to
Alvarado for the big hit, he has worked his tail off
all year.... Congrats to Coach Nieto for doing it "his"
way (hard work and being TEAM first), "Congrats to the boys who got it done this year... #1 Seed Del Rio League Champs....
Our baseball caps go off to Fuentes’ and the rest of Santa Fe’s team. This year they are the better club, but it will be a battle next year for league. Good luck ……but not in “0 10
