Titans advance

A 5-yard pass from Steven Del Villar to Eddie Aguirre with about 15 seconds left in the game provided the deciding points in Pioneer's 21-14 victory over Artesia Sunday in the second day of the Watts Summer Games at Los Angeles Southwestern College.
The Titans lost their first game Sunday to Los Angeles Banning, 20-9, but the win over Artesia was their third in four games and most likely moves them into next weekend's competition for the Games' football championship.
Pioneer defeated Fairfax, 26-13, and Morningside, 23-15, Saturday.
Del Villar, who passed for three scores against Artesia, made several crucial, on-target throws that were dropped and proved costly against Banning.
"Overall, we didn't play our best football today," Pioneer coach Ramon Juarez said, "but I was pleased with the we way fought back.
"It looked like we didn't have a lot of emotion after losing to Banning. I think the players were a little disappointed after losing that one. We were down 14-6 going into the second half (against Artesia), but we came back to tie the score, and then got the ball left with about three minutes remaining. Aguirre started on a short slant, then released to the outside to grab Del Villar's accurate pass.
A decision concerning which teams advance to Saturday's final rounds will be made Monday, but Pioneer defeated all three of its opponents in its bracket, giving Juarez reason to be optimistic about the Titans' chances to continue.

Big oso: Santa Fe doesn’t think about Cal Hi, they have too many elrancho coaches. Coach Arnold cant get it done. The coaches from the freshmen to jv and the varsity are elrancho fools. The coaches have rode out the SP’s kids. So look for balance in SFChiefs, taking league and CIF.

I will not take back my prediction, its 10&0. Let us forget about our league, right now, St Paul could not beat us. Coach has been drilling us on the basics, we been driving iron like never before. I know some people are afraid to say what is true. Last year we had players that were too in to themselves. Maybe the problem last year was some of the coaches, not real Cal people. So call me what you want.

I believe and I am sure most would agree that it is an excellent thing when students, parents and coaching staff are animated about the up and coming football season. However, it is not a good idea and maybe detrimental, to put down your “definite adversary” this seasons, it is like fuel to the fire. The Del Rio league will be a lot fun, for the mere fact, “new players (teams) seek their own glory days. Making their own mark, trying to set their own records. participating in the greatest sport in the world. Who is going to become the hometown hero from their school? Good luck DRL.

10-0? Try one game at a time, never disrespect your competition and pray the injury bug doesn't bite you in your A$$. Nothing like fueling the fire you moron.

Cal Fan, lets not call the Del Rio League too week. There is Santa Fe.Santa Fe has some very good returning players. Their offensive line, once again will be equal to Cals size and strength. Cals offensive line will be Senior heavy but they are first time starters. There are a lot of good reasons why Cal should compete for League this year. The Offense should be more balance. There seems to be a QB shootout brewing at Cal. Eddie and Adam threw the ball well during spring. It was nice to see a QB stay in the pocket. Whoever gets the nod this year will be able to stretch the field and keep the defense off balance. This years team has all the weapons needed for a great season.

Cal Hi report; much better than last year. Faster& stronger. We’re looking to go 10-0. Don’t see much competition in our league.

whittier's numbers are not down this year. whittier always has a small team. They always bring a lot of j.v. guys up for varsity games to make the team look better. Whittier and Pioneer always get half the kids out that the other league schools do. and yes the district is charging money to allow the kids to participate in the summer. but i know whittier is doing extra fund raisers to cut that cost in half. plus kids were told families with money issues can speak with the coaches and the football program would find a way to pay for it. It also doesn't go to pay the coaches. the coaches do not get paid to coach during the summer.

Running a successful program cost money. $90.00 dollars seems like a very resonable price IMO. I have heard some schools will charge in the neighborhood of $200.00 for summer football. The proceeds are often used to pay the coaches who are there for most of the summer months training and conditioning their boys in preparation for the upcoming season. Some of the proceeds are used to pay for the teams summer shorts and shirts. Most school districts do not allocate any funds to help pay for the expense of running a football summer program. Hence, the need to ask the players and their parents to pay for the expenses incurred by the program. I know that times are tough right now, but I think the benefits out weigh the cost IMO.

I heard a few things this week that maybe you can look into.
1. St. Paul has 45 players out for football.
2. Coach A is trying to get the #'s of two big linemen, from Whittier high so he could talk to them.
3. A ex coach is talking to a Cal high RB, about going to st. paul.
4. No one knows who the freshmen head coach is at st. paul.
5. Pioneer, Whittier, and La Serna #'s are down in football.
6. Whittier dist. is charging $90.00 to play sports during summer. So that the coaches can get paid, and the kids get no class credit for it.
more ? to be asked soon.
