Stern hooks up with Utah State University
It took a while, created some anxious moments and required a lot of patience, but California place-kicker Eric Stern finally joined the ranks of the recruited.
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Condor graduate was offered by Utah State University and accepted about three weeks ago, although the announcement was made Monday.
The delay was a surprise after Stern's illustrious high school career seemingly would have earned considerable interest among Division I college recruiters.
"Eric is one of the top kids in the nation coming out this year, without a doubt," said Brad Bohn, Stern's kicking coach. "Cal and Oregon signed (kickers) this year and he's just as good as they are. Eric is a real competitive guy. He has a very strong leg. Utah State got a steal with Eric.
Stern made eight of 11 field goal attempts this season, including a pair of 57-yarders against South El Monte and Santa Fe. He also averaged 41.8 yards as a punter.

Jeff you're a little late or did it take that long to come up with your story.
First off, regarding "Dwight Tardy" as a personal friend, he never lived across the street from St. Paul. He lived in walnut. That can be checked with your local papers and the city of walnut. It is amazing to me what people will write to get attention and defame others in their own loss of fame and unclaimed life.
Roger,
I don't see Eric Stern's name on the football roster at Utah State University and it includes incomming freshman?
if this is you Ramirez go back to elrancho because you stink as a coach!! Our baseball Coach fired you. We need real coaches, like Ancich.
Not evolved my axx st paul, how can you question if we teach leadership? Did not Sp's administration just fire all their coaches? Why, I'll tell you why, because of a lack of morals.sp don't judge or throw rocks. Because it will always come back.
California High School said: Hum! (bigger problems)
With the recent news, what is Arnold teaching his "CAL" players?
From what has been reported in our local paper. He's not teaching leadership. Or maybe you tell us!
Because it looks like SP players were not involved.
Cal:
Coach Arnold was the Head Football Coach at Sunny Hills for 3 or 4 years after he was an assistant at Cal-Hi.
Gamer: Community College football is good!
Calpreps has Santa Fe, Cal and La Serna as the first three teams in the preseason rankings.
Thank you, Mr. Murray.
It has been a real pleasure reading your articles and blogs...
Good morning..
Yes it is true.
Nick begins Fall Football practice/training at San Jose State on August 5th as a "walk-on" recruit.
Wish him luck!!
Dwight Tardy’s family rented the house across the street from (SP) the school. That home wasn’t a section 8 property. What was amazing Dwight broke every record (RB) that was around for almost 49 years and in only two years. That really upset a lot of Alum. Therefore, the witch-hunt was on. I guess for some folks cherish their records.
Murray did you say scholarship or walk on? There seems to be some major discrepancies.
A very nice article “Andrew J Campa” in this morning’s paper; I knew Coach Gonzalez was doing good things at Montebello. I hear it from my cousins all the time.
This year MHS comes to the Ranch, it is going to be a fun hard-hitting game. Just like both schools like it.
Fantasy my azz, we have placed plenty of kids recently. That is why the talent shows up. They know you cannot go to the next level without SP. Why did Dwight Tardy attend SP? Because we train him and push him when he didn’t want to do the work. Come on where would he be now??????
To CALALum said…….. Maybe his coach should get out there and shop him around instead of waiting for coaches to call hi him. Maybe because Coach Arnold should shop around for his players,……Because Arnold (Cal Hi) did not play at the next level and he never started at La Mirada his prep school............................ Coach Arnold only coach as an assistant in all of his prior coaching position. He does not have the connections, and would not know how to go about it. So its left up to the kids and parents.
Who does St. Paul send or place at the next level? Are you serious? Other then Dwight Tardy please tell me? Are you refering to guys like Ramses Arceo two time All CIF all divisions OL. Placed at Cerritos. Or David Flores All Cif Division 3 player of the year placed at Cerritos. Or maybe the running back from that year where is he playing at. What kids are you talking about? What Kids. Please tell me. You guys get the best talent yet still don't do any job placing kids then any other area team. Fantasy Land.
To SP and St. Paul:
Several kids from last year will be playing at 4 year school and several more at 2 year schools. They did all the work themselves.
This year we have at least 2 that will play at 4 year schools.
I'm not saying they will play at the likes of USC, UCLA, etc.
But a free ride to any school to continue their education and still play football is great thing for these kids.
Don't sell our kids short.
Congrats to Eric, he deserves it. It is true that Nick Finney will walk on at San Jose.
What? Our sons our told they will be recognize for their talent, as what, beach warmers? What are you saying; that SP will say anything to get kids to come to our school? My brother played in 1991 do you remember Ron Henke, the same year? I knew things are low “Facility” wise but what I see at the school it’s bad. I knew we were in need of funds. I already felt it for some time. We need certified teachers and good men to lead the way, ‘no lies’. And the parents are very different now.
Well St. Paul if you’re refereeing to last years kids that went to a JC?... That work only entails ‘sign-up’.
At St. Paul 99 & 3/4% of the kids aren’t going anywhere and that’s a fact and this year’s football squad most likely none. You can’t make something out of nothing period. Our kids will complete like always and that’s very good. When a kid has talent, no kid or parent has to ask a coach for help, he (coach) knows what is standing in front of him. Because in return it will bring more kids.
Good for Eric! that kid has a serious leg on him.
Also heard that SF D-lineman Nick Finney was recently accepted by San Jose State University as a "walk-on" recruit. Anybody know if it's true?
St.Paul said:
I totally disagree anon, with your (You can't expect the coaches to do all the work to get a kid recruited). At St.Paul we try and place (recruited) every kid that is worth (recruiting) placing, most kids don't have it and can't be place. A kid like Eric Stern has the talent. Right now the kids we have don't have the talent to go to the next level. Good kids but average at best.
St. Paul:
I have to disagree with you. I think St. Paul has done a lousy job in getting kids placed. And who determines that the kid is worth placing? Not all kids will play at the next level but for some kids there are programs they fit in to.
St. Paul has several kids from last year alone that will be playing on Saturdays next year but they had to do a lot of the work themselves. Sure, some of the coaches stepped in and helped some when asked but the kids and parents do most of the work themselves. Same thing applies to the 2006 and 2007 squads.
I think you underestimate this years team.
The guy was in the paper, had his stats and ability all over the place. Realize that's why some kids go (parents send) to the bigger D-1 schools to get their notice.
I totally disagree anon, with your (You can't expect the coaches to do all the work to get a kid recruited ). You can't expect the coaches to do all the work to get a kid recruited. It really takes the involvement of the parents.
I don't know what process Eric went through but the important thing is that he will not only be playing at the next level but he will be getting an college education to boot.
Congratulations Eric!
Congratulation Boom Boom magic leg Eric Stern. The area is proud of you, good luck and God be with you!
Way to go Stern!! I saw him kick at the games and he's got talent
With Stern's leg he should have landed somewhere bigger than Utah State. Maybe his coach should get out there and shop him around instead of waiting for coaches to call him. It's sad that so much local talent goes unnoticed because coaches are too lazy to make phone calls and market their players.
