Morales named St. Paul athletic director
Casey Morales, a member of St. Paul High School's 1981 CIF Southern Section championship football team and 1982 graduate of the school, has been named the Swordsmen's athletic director.
Morales, (age) replaces Marc Hernandez, who resigned Thursday to take a position with a firm outside the teaching profession.
"It was something I knew that before I finish (retire) I wanted to be an A.D.," Morales said after Monday afternoon's football practice. "I know what it takes and the kind of guys to get in place to coach and run a program.
"I always wanted an opportunity like this, I just didn't expect it to happen so quickly. It's a little earlier than I figured, but I'm ready and I'm looking forward to the challenge."
As for immediate goals, Morales said, "Of course, we're trying to increase enrollment, and we still want to put out an A-plus athletic program.
"We've had a lot of success over the years, and I want us to continue that success. And, of course, it's got be academics tied to athletics."
Morales, who was an offensive guard on that 1981 championship team, moved on to play football and baseball at the University of San Diego before graduating from the school in 1986.
He actually began his coaching career in 1985 at University of San Diego High School.
He had coaching positions at St. John Bosco, Santa Fe, Glen A. Wilson (Hacienda Heights) and La Serna high schools before returning to St. Paul in 2005.
He has coached softball and track & field at St. Paul and is currently an assistant football coach and head baseball coach for the Swordsmen.
A release from the school cites Morales' "vast coaching experience and positive relationship with the school and surrounding community that will serve him well as he embarks on this new challenge."
Morales has had a long connection with St. Paul. He was the first of four members of his family (a brother and two sisters) to graduate a Swordsman, and his wife Julie and daughters Cassie ('02) and Christina ('03) and son Daniel ('08) are St. Paul graduates, and daughter Katrina will be a Swordsman senior this year.

Against LM you cant win with kids from pr dons or anyone from the local area. At least not now. Coach Pete had it right, bring kids from outside the area. Every private school we play against does that very thing.
St.Paul's offense did not show up against La Mirada.
Swordsman defense was on the field nearly 3 qtrs. As always these kids played with hearts and guts. But, the offense needs some tweeking. Can't run the same offensive look without big studs on the line for 4 qtrs. Finally, can't have your best athletes on the sidelines for such a long time. La Mirada much bigger seemed to wear down the defense. Need week Garfield will run 3 yds and a cloud of dust and use up the clock if you don't bring your A-Game. Good Luck!
La Habra-still laughing !,
Keep laughing maybe you didn't understand the logic. I know SP is no where near the success SC has accomplished on the field but as far as traditions are concerned they are similar.
Answer these questions I was confused by your post
SP is the same as USC?
Is that a question? No stated they were the same if that's what you are trying to state. It was a uniform comparison.
I don’t where to begin with this one.
hmmm???
This is a classic (R)ridiculous statement LOL.
enough said
i can guarantee you that Morales will make a game with La Habra top priority to show who really is the areas best
You have to be a complete idiot,…DYNO MITE:
St. Paul sure does work out in the old weight room and if you went there you would understand the pride that all alumni have in the school's weight room. Compare it to USC's weight room if you have ever seen it, which I can assure you haven't. It's not the facility the breeds the athlete it's the preparation that gets them there. Uniforms, SP does have the same uniforms ala USC but I know they purchased new sets last season.
SP is the same as USC? I don’t where to begin with this one. This is a classic Ridiculous statement LOL.
When do we play la meirda?
I have to laugh at some of these positing that try to downgrade St. Paul High School. They are coming from public school parents who get a get a free ride from the taxpayers for their childrens education. These are the same parents who probably never set foot on their kids campus. They seem to be afraid of the success of at St. Paul High School and they keep dreaming of trying to replicate that success at their kids schools but try as hard as they can they always seem to come up short.
So in order to pump themselves up their only recourse is to jump on St. Paul and to try and bring them down to their level. but try as hard as they can they just cant seem to bring down the mighty swordsmen and this just makes them madder and madder than ever. you can just see the vile they spew while they try to kick at St Paul.
Kick away my friends because you will never knock St.Paul off their feet, they will ALWAYS stand taller then you at the end of the day.
With the New Principal, Ms. Barr, The new AD, Morales and all of the outstanding, dedicated teachers, staff and coaches at St. Paul their greater days lay ahead.
Maybe because his son wouldn’t make grade at St.Paul. Parents will take their kids were they have a chance to play, those kids would not make the team at SP so they have to go to a weaker football school. Drama my axx!!!!!!!
Just the Facts,
No one is bringing La Habra into any drama. I will try to answer all of your facts. Let's begin:
Yes, Mazzotta is an alumni, but the fact is that he did not even enroll his 9th grade son at your school.
Mazzotta is the head football coach as well as an educator at La Habra, right, why on God's green earth would he pay for tuition at SP if he can go to La Habra for free and get a quality education as well as be with him on campus. Also, when coach Ancich was at Tustin his sons both went there because obviously he coached and taught there.
Also- our starting quarterback's parents are alumni from St. Paul.
I am an alumni of SP and my son doesn't play there. So automatically that makes my alma mater a bad school...NOT plus also ask Sierra where he was going to go as an 8th grader and his dad also went to SP. The connection between the schools is inevitable.
Also many boys who attended St. Brunos are on the team.
I am sure many schools have a solid core of St. Brunos kids as well as other parochial school kids. SP has many St. Bruno students attending, not a big deal. All St. Bruno kids good luck at whatever school you are attending.
and of course or starting center left your school after 1st year. That says a lot.
Josh is a tremendous athlete and a phenomenal person. I had the pleasure to watch him play and see him develop. Ask him what he thought about SP..you will be surprised at all the good things he has to say about the school.
The program is completely different from St. Paul.
It sure is and right now La Habra is doing a great job of getting people to the next level and playing good football.
St. Paul still works out in the same tin can weight room - same old uniforms etc..
St. Paul sure does work out in the old weight room and if you went there you would understand the pride that all alumni have in the school's weight room. Compare it to USC's weight room if you have ever seen it, which I can assure you haven't. It's not the facility the breeds the athlete it's the preparation that gets them there. La Habra is progressive with training and speed training. Please stop including La Habra in your DRAMA.
La Habra does have an excellent on staff speed coach in Cody and they are pretty fast. Do you really think SP gets better athletes than La habra? The thing that I believe makes SP so special is that they have turned under achievers into believers and into winners. Whether you want to admit it or not SP coaching style has been spread around California football regardless if you like it or NOT!!! That is a FACT! The reason La Habra is brought into most topics of conversation along with SP because hands down they are the two top programs in the area. I know that SF will contest that claim as they have every right, but I think the simple fact that they have never won a title excludes them from this debate. All of this back and forth over who is better will truely never be resolved until the game is played on the field. Does anyone know the all time record between SP/La Habra? I think at this point La Habra does have the upper hand due to their recent accomplishments. Best of luck to both programs on a succesful and injury free season.
Can we please get a game set up between SP/La Habra?
Just the facts
said it perfectly, there is few SP alum left that will send their kids to SP I know many people that refuse to send their kids to that declining school
As for the old tin room, uniforms, ect that is 100% true what a joke I can't believe parents pay to send their children to SP there freshman and Jv uniforms look like the 1980 whittier redskins practice jersey not to mention there sorry stadium they call the pitt WHERE IS ALL THE MONEY GOING
Truth Hurts
Dear Justhefacts,
Not including La Habra in any drama, in fact I was giving props for having a good program. But since you suggested that St. Paul HS football is still stuck in the 70's & 80's with your reference to our weight room, and plain uniforms we have wore for years, let me state the facts. You don't want to play us because it just won't be good for your program. Because what excuse will you have with all your programs as you mentioned when we beat you on the field if you ever decided to schedule us. No drama man, just plain facts, schedule us and see how progressive you really are.
By the way you talk all you want about how good your program has been, your titles, coaching, talent, ex-St. Paul kids going there, and transfers from ST. Paul, but it comes down to simply playing us!!!! There is nothing you can say until you prove yourselves to us on the field.
RE: Not a concern parent said: ...YOU DON'T MAKE ANY SENSE....SO IF YOU SAY IT WAS RECENT, HOW IS IT THAT YOU STATED "It looks like the hazing incident will not be address, that’s sad and inexcusable"...HOW DO YOU KNOW THIS? ARE YOU THE COACH, THE DIRECTOR, THE STUDENT....NO! YOU ARE NONE OF THE ABOVE. YOU ARE JUST ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE "TRYING" TO MAKE THIS A BIG DEAL. THE PROPER "PROFESSIONALS" AT SP HAVE IT UNDER CONTROL. YOU NEED TO MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS. LIKE I SAID...IF YOU ARE GOING TO TALK, MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE ALL THE FACTS STRAIGHT AND THAT YOU ARE NOT JUST TALKING OUT OF YOUR...WELL YOU KNOW THE REST :-)
predicted score for st paul vs la meirda st paul 28,la meirda 13 st pauls running backs r gonna show them what hard work is all about...oh by the way starting center at san jose state is an alumni from st.paul......somuch for the st paul kids dont advance to d1 programs theory, success on any level is still just that.............sucess!
Dear SPHS Fan-
Please do not drag La Habra into your DRAMA.
Yes, Mazzotta is an alumni, but the fact is that he did not even enroll his 9th grade son at your school.

RECENTLY SAW SP PRACTICE .......PEOPLE I DONT THINK THEY WILL BE AS BAD AS ALL THE ANTI-S.P. BLOGGERS THINK (OR HOPE),THEY WILL BE OH BY THE WAY ITS VERY HARD TO DENY THE FOOTPRINT S.P. HAS LEFT ON ALL THE PROGRAMS IN THE AREA.....WE RAISED THE BAR THAT YOU ALL STRIVE TO REACH.....AND THAT IS THE TRUE REASON FOR ALL THE IMPROVEMENT IN ALL THE FOOTBALL PROGRAMS IN THE AREA ,YES THERE IS MORE PERIODY,AND AS AN AREA FOOTBALL FAN IT MAKES FOR BETTER FOOTBALL WHICH MEANS EVERYBODY WINS ESPECIALLY THE KIDS WITH THE HELMETS ON ,SO NO MATTER WHO YOU SUPPORT MAKE SURE YOU REALIZE THAT IT REALLY TRUELY FOR THE KIDS!!!!!!!!!!
TO THE CONCERNED PARENT AND DONALD. SINCE YOU ARE SOOOO CONCERNED AND YOU WANT TO BRING UP OLD NEWS, I SERIOUSLY SUGGEST THAT YOU GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU START SPREADING RUMORS...THE HAZING INCIDENT WAS ADDRESSED AND HAS BEEN DEALT WITH....THERE WAS NO PUNCH IN THE FACE...IT WAS NOT A 2x4....THE SITUATION WAS DEALT WITH....THE PARENTS OF ALL PARTIES WHERE INVOLVED...IT WAS INVESTIGATED..IT IS OVER.
REALITY CHECK - START ADDRESSING YOUR LIVES FIRST AND THEN MAYBE WHEN THAT HAS BEEN FIXED AND IF YOU STILL HAVE THE TIME....FEEL FREE TO BE CONCERNED WITH WHAT IS NOT YOUR BUSINESS.
It seems to me there are many out there that would like to see SPHS just crash and burn. How sad are you that you have to wish ill ways to us rather than schedule us next year to prove that regardless of enrollment decline, not division 1, non-creditial teachers, and my fav no talent we'd kick yours butts without question. Why? Better coaching, tougher workouts, brotherhood between players, and a strong core of parents that support the program and their kids.
About La Habra, sure they have a great program and I believe their head coach is an old St. Paul guy that took with him simular qualities he learned there and is appying them successfully as you can see. Having said that my money is still with St. Paul, a bit bias I may add!!!!
Good luck to all of the kids, may you enjoy your high school years as they are a time you will always remember. God bless you all.
2009 football preview section scheduled to publish Wednesday, Sept. 2.
what the word on the football preview? when is it coming out?????????
It looks like the hazing incident will not be address, that’s sad and inexcusable. Back in the day,” maybe” it was common but now 21 Century, no way! Do the coaches understand the ramifications of an incident of that caliber?
Isn't that the problem (accountable), the freshmen kid is he alright from the hazing? SP hasn't change in years. Lets move into the 21 st Century.....CM......... Best wishes to AD Casey Morales. Be a leader and make students and coaches be accountable in how they represent their school. (And I don't mean in the win/loss category). Its all we hope her&him.
sports fan original said: its only a delay. the suds are taking you over. go back to whc the good people.
I wonder how those bloggers that were saying Morales was going to be fired as baseball coach (last spring) feel. I guess those parents are nowhere near as powerful as they thought they were!!
Thank God!!
what TF, you people are arguing about an old ass game, when SP is falling apart, pay attention to your school news letter. our freshmen class is smaller than last year. but you knuckleheads want to talk about some score that the kids who played in the that old ass game don't even care about anymore. Swordsmen get to work!!!
I was looking at upcoming job openings in the WUHSD and it looks like ALL local high schools are having coaching replacements. Check out their website. It looks like Whittier has no coaches lined up for Spring sports and Santa Fe and Cal are looking for Fall and Winter coaches. What's going on at those campuses? Maybe the "drama" is that public or private schools have change going on continuously - that's just the nature of that enviroment.
Any coaches among the bloggers looking for a position? Check it out. Lots of openings.
Best wishes to AD Casey Morales. Be a leader and make students and coaches be accountable in how they represent their school. (And I don't mean in the win/loss category).
A few Santa Fe fans come on this blog so high and mighty. Sure you have a winning program, why shouldn't you. You have a great tackle program that feeds into your school, but what have you done in the play-offs lately??? When was the last time Santa Fe won a CIF division? Keep in mind that some of our public TAX dollars pay for your program. But you can still hate us.
My daughter states coach Morales is a great teacher.
Congratulations coach!
SF won't be a factor in the Del Rio...DONS BABY!!!!
I recall the last time SP played SF was in 94 you are correct, the game was played at Pioneer High, SP won 28-0, in 93 was when Willie played a great game and SP came out on top by 1 point is the game you are speaking of. Please research before you speak and make yourself look like a moron. How many times has SF beaten SP oh thats right they are 0-19, please. What is SPs overall record against Servite?
The correct scores are as follows:
92' SP v. SF at Pioneer... Kotsay was quarterback for SF..
28-14 SP
93' SP v. SF at SPHS... Willie kid had the game of his life
26-24 SP
94' SP v. SF at Pioneer... Complete blowout, some SP
starters out at half time. 28-0
That was the last time the two schools played each other. SF has never beaten SP... you can't argue with numbers gentlemen...let's worry about teams we play this year. Support our kids who are there now and get off of this whole ridiculous banter. Good luck this season!
Funny how SP people can quote scores versus Santa Fe but their memory goes blank when it comes to Servite.
Yo Murray…..when does the football preview coming out?
I stop by the blog every couple days. Seems like SP is here everyday. Is this a condition of unemployment?
do you think casey morales will follow up on the hazing that broke a 2x4 on a freshmen or how about the punch in the face..... is casey up for the truth at st paul or will lori barr step up to do the right thing. i am surprised the freshmen parents have not raised holy hell......

As I recall last time SP played Santa Fe the score was SP 28 SF 0. Not sure if a last second field goal would make up 28 points.....
LMFAO!!!!!!
lets make a correction, learn your history before you blog the last time Santa Fe played Sp was at SP 1994 sp could not stop Willie kohulakula (aka free willie) santa fe was up in the 4th qtr 24-23 and as time expired sp kicked a lucky field goal that bounced off the goal post to win 26-24 in 1993 sp scored 28 points off sf turn overs in the 1st qtr and never scored again sp won 28-14 sp should beat sf point is they struggled to beat a div 7 team and thanks to last sec field goal they won now thats pretty embarassing
Anonymous
just goes to show you never played a down of football in your life you fake and stop bloggin about a school you know nothing about
But when one mishap at St. Paul took place, it turns into a big fiasco....... Are you crazy? the whole school is a fiasco!!!! enrollment dropping for 10 years now. I know, you're thinking if you close your eyes and don't see it, it cant be happening. Crazy=crazy isn't a mishap. So keep moving everyone around. I am sure you think it's gotta work someday=Crazy!!!!
To anonymous down there saying our school is a joke.. You should really work on your grammar before you make such comments about St. Paul. Also, you can seriously make no remarks about the St. Paul community if it's only going to relate to football. As a student, I feel that no school is going to have the perfect administration, academics, or athletics. No one will ever seem to be satisfied. I hear of outrageous things that go on at other schools. Although, it's rare when the community knows about it. But when one mishap at St. Paul took place, it turns into a big fiasco. We'll overcome all this though.
I look forward to this year's competition. Congratulations Coach Morales! and GO SWORDSMEN!
Anonymous August 26, 1:18 pm. You have serious problems. A GOOD PSYCHOLOGIST would be best.
As I recall last time SP played Santa Fe the score was SP 28 SF 0. Not sure if a last second field goal would make up 28 points.....
We are not playing ND and Loyola this year because of the Serra/Mission rotation. We play Amat and Crespi (Serra League) this year and go back to Loyola and ND next year, although the new leagues might change that.
SPHS FAN
YEAH MAN UP AND PLAY YOU RIGHT LETS SEE WHAT HAPPENS THIS YR COMMENT AFTER FOOTBALL SEASON IF YOU MAKE THE PLAYOFFS

So this is what “Barr” calls change? Most people would call it musical chairs! How are things going to improve with the same people who are part of the problem, now only in a different location or title at the school? Enrollment is and will continue to fall. What about some new blood? Bring in people who are not tied with the old regime.
THATS IS FROM YOUR OWN PEOPLE HOW SAD YOUR SCHOOL IS A JOKE FACE IT I BET LH WOULD WHOP U GUYS UP N DOWN THE PITT MYSELF I AM A SF FAN & YEAH YOU GUYS MIGHT BEAT US BUT NOT BY MUCH BUT THEN AGAIN YOUR SUPPOSE TOO YOUR DIV 3 AND AS I REMEMBER WHEN YOU DID PLAY SF YOU BARLEY BEAT THEM THAT LUCKY LAST SEC FIELD GOAL OTHERWISE YOU WOULD BE THE LAUGHING STOCK OF DIV 3 OHH WAIT YOU ALREADY ARE YOU PLAY TEAMS LIKE PIONEER, AND LM IS PRE SEASON WOW THAT SAYS ALOT YOUR SCHOOL. MO MO,
Congratulations Brother, you deserve this opportunity. When I heard Mark resigned, My thoughts were for St. Paul to hire you and strengthen the tradition of the Swordsmen. Good luck and God Bless to you and your family.
Former Coach from 2007
Nice choice SP, he will handle that job with honor and respect. I wish him well and the athletic department will benefit in a huge way from his appointment.
For all those out there that keep suggesting that SPHS is on the decline, man up and play us, based on your thinking we do not have the horses to compete. So for all the local schools I would push your athletic director to make a simple call to our new director to first wish him well on his new assignment and secondly to put us on your schedule in 2010. Then we will see who's on the decline!!!
Come on SF, LH, BS & LS put your money where your mouth is.
Way to go Coach. St. Paul has a good MAN, in the right place, at the right time.
Murry enough bout SP already know one cares about that decilning so called school. Open up a blog just for those losers it seems like everyday someone is leaving, got fired, resigned, rehired, transferred, got arrested. Congrats Casey but there are other programs that deserve to be blogged about rather than the drama thats going on there. What about all the other schools that actually are preparing for football season with out all the BS LH,SF,LS for crying out loud the only people who care about SP is the alum and its obvious the school doesn't communicate with them so that's SPs problem not ours.
A great decision to hire Casey, the kids all love him, he was one of the unnoticed forces behind the 07 football team, he worked that senior class hard from the start as head freshman coach, not to mention putting together a great baseball program at the same time.
