Did you happen to catch...

perhaps the biggest upset in the young Del Rio League boys basketball season.

Last Friday, Pioneer (5-15 overall, 1-2 in league) upset host Whittier, 55-54. The loss created a four-way tie for first place between Whittier (9-9, 2-1), California (8-8, 2-1), La Serna (9-10, 2-1) and Santa Fe (6-9, 2-1).

Apparently emotion can be very useful.

Pioneer first-year coach Brad Willis said his kids "were really excited."

Willis further commented that "they wanted to win the game really bad. They played under (current Whittier coach) Joey Mata for several years. Seeing that he went to Whittier made them play even harder."

The Titans won when sophomore guard Josh Fitten converted the second of two free throws of a double-bonus situation with 3.8 seconds left. Now that's pressure.

Anonymous and another Anonymous: I have been thinking..... and I have some information for you. This took a lot of thought though and some info could be a little off; like the years.

I must correct you. The only sport at Whittier that has not been successful is football.

Let's see....Basketball...Varos' first couple of seasons his teams won league. Yes he had that Hernandez kid and some big kid (about 6ft.6). OK....that little, italian, older baseball coach in the early 2000's won league a couple times. The Aldrete brothers I think.....
Boys and girls Water Polo has always been good and each won a CIF championship.... Girls basketball has been a league power lately.....

If we bring in other schools in the area, there has been a lot of success...... even Pioneer..... Football...they had some transfer from Crenshaw and then Ricky Reyes I think...well they were very good for about 4 or 5 years and even won a CIF game I think.

La Serna Football even won some CIF games in the past 7 or 8 years.... La Serna baseball has been strong in the CIF Playoffs under Brock....and Cal Football and Baseball has done very well as of late, both in league and in the playoffs.

Santa Fe, of course, in football was dominant, except for the past two or three seasons.... Even El Rancho under Coach Patricio in the late 90's won league two or three times.

EVERYBODY BUT WHITTIER FOOTBALL! ONLY WHITTIER FOOTBALL HAS BEEN LEFT OUT

Whittier has never been good or successful at any sport, so sport fan original you are asking the impossible. Remember EGYPT was the first place of learning not Whittier right? Now sport fan original don't start with 1993, because Whittier

another Anonymous said:

sports fan original what other sports has whittier ben successful in. Not many why would you expect them to be good at football?

sports fan original said:

Anonymous: there you go again! Claiming no talent. BULL! And...new administration? Come on. They all know the past. Where did they come from? EGYPT? Is the new administration totally unaware of the past? If so, what a terrible hire.
And I know you cannot win with one or two players, but Whittier has a lot more than that!

ANSWER THE QUESTION!

anonymous said:

What question are you talking about? The current administration has only been there for like a year and a half. They current athletic director is brand new this year. They cant worry about what happend before they came they are going off what they are seeing now currently. They see things moving in the right direction and yes even in football.

And going to a few games you mave have seen some very good individual athletes but in football you need more then 1 or two players with talent and it think as the numbers go up on kids coming out on the lower levels such as the last few years. Like for instance the freshman team winning a league title for the first time in over ten years the overall performance will go up. Whittier is imporoving and the adminstration is going off what its seen in its tenure. Before you talk about the numbers. Not making excuses im sure that they could have been more successful in the last 15 years but i think there making there judgement on now.

Why don't you awnser my question. La serna doesnt have talent in football and basketball or soccer this year? you praise them. what about El Rancho and Pioneer you don't get on them. El Rancho adminstration has ruined there sports program especially there football team. They have a great feeder system the pico dons. They get a 120 freshman out every year and over 40 kids with football experience. And have been awful. Whittier gets 1-5 kids with experience and only recently have there freshman numbers gone up to compete with the schools. Mainly because families don't send there kids to whittier not because of there sports programs no being successful but because of there academics.

Cal Hi is and santa fe are the ones that thrive in football. Cal Hi and El Rancho get twice as many kids going to there school. And Santa fe constantly gets kids from outside there area.

Ms. Longo doesn't have power at whittier. But she does run the booster clubs and raises thousands of dollars personally for the program which has little to no parental support. In a school thats students are mostly all economically struggling families.

Sports Fan Original said:

Anonymous: Coaches respecting one another is one thing. And the admisistration "witnessing" the effect of a "positive coaching change" is another!! NICE TRY!!
YOU CANNOT EVEN ANSWER THE QUESTION I HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR 2 MONTHS NOW. AND....LONGO...WHEN I SAW HER AT WHITTIER PONY IN THE 90'S SHE BRAGGED ABOUT HER POWER AT WHITTIER. I DID NOT BRING HER INTO THIS, ONE OF THE FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS DID. WHEN I SAW HER NAME ON THE BLOG I QUICKLY REMEMBERED HER TALKING ABOUT HER POWER AT THE WHITTIER PONY BALLFIELD.

It appears she is still powerful. I does not matter that she is a basketball booster.

I have watched a few WHS football games over the past 10 or 15 seasons and consistently I have wondered why they cannot win a little more consistently with the good talent they have. Especially lately. Over time, there can only be ONE ANSWER.

oiler rob said:

the oilers of montebello need to get a little more ink they have lost only one game all year they would win the drl hands down good luck oilers the rest of the season

anonymous said:

Yeah sports fan original they have names for people like that "band wagoner's" lol. And just to show how much about whittier sports you don't know. Longo runs the boosters for the basketball team as well. sorry. Coach Mata and football coachs are supporters of each other and respect eachother as coaches. As a matter of fact the OC for the football team is on mata's staff. The fact that you were a Varos supporter shows you knew nothing about what goes on at whittier. And i don't really think Coach Mata wants your support considering you belittled his livleyhood. Because apparently you are the judge of whats an honorable job and what isn't. I don't care if you apologized and trust me he doesn't either. I know Coach Mata pretty well trust me he doesn't want your support. Neither does Whittier with your axe to grind. You dont even make sense the majority of the time. You praise La Serna hate on Whittier facts are facts this year the only year that counts right now football, basketball and soccer combined records whittier 21-19-1 La Serna 15-24-1. All three teams have a better record then la serna's yet you praise them. Even are girls basket ball team 13-9 La Serna's 6-14. What nonsense are you talking about. Sounds like Whittiers improving and your the one living in the past. Whittier will keep chugging away and working hard. You can keep doing what your doing blogging and hating and jumping on bandwagons. Its basketball season get over your grudge with Ms. Longo.

Anonymous....I know that I preach like I know everything, but one thing I never have preached: and that is I have never predicted who is going to win and who is going to lose. I never claimed to be an "oddsmaker"!

I think I may be becoming a Mata fan!! If Whittier continues to win I will have no choice. EVERYBODY LOVES A WINNER. Including me.

What is so important to me is that Whittier is winning big so far, pulling out close games, winning by one point, etc. Just the opposite of the football team. This basketball team is really dealing with adversity in a big way. They did not do that under Varos.

And you all know if you have been blogging for a year that I did not like the change.

But the change does support, big time, my biggest complaint about Whittier High School. No change in the direction of the football coaching staff. I believe Whittier has plenty of athletes. I have seen some of their football games over the past 5 or 10 years. And I believe they have players.

Well guess what WHITTIER FOOTBALL PEOPLE (LONGO AS STATED BY ONE OF YOU LAST SPRING): Whittier basketball appears to be excelling with the new direction of Coach Mata.

If it continues maybe "the change" will force the administration to THINK and ingnore all the "status quo" football parents.

The proof may be on the basketball court!

Whittier 67 Cal 42. Whittier played so great team ball tonight. Great job Cardinals!!!!

Del Rio Fan said:

I agree with Del Rio Follower. Don't count the Lancers out. They should be 4-0, but they seem to have a hard time putting things together. They are the most talented team this year in Del Rio. The Pioneer Whittier game was great and the story line was perfect. Mata made a good move going to Whittier and the Pioneer boys played a very inspiring game.

Big showdown tonight at Whittier! Can Whittier beat Cal Hi? Sports Fan Original what do you think can the Cardinals beat them?

sports fan original said:

Anonymous: first off, they are not my Lancers. I just made a guess based upon the past years. If they were "my Lancers" I would not continually "put down" how they do well in league and "lose in the first round every year"! That is Lowe's history!!

Yes, it is great to see Whittier Basketball on the move, considering a coaching change. Remember that Mata is in his first year at Whittier but gained alot of experience as a head coach at Pioneer.

Will they continue their run?

To Sports Fan Original:

What do you think know about your Lancers? You know and I know the league is very down this year. Cal Hi and Whittier playing for 1st place for the 1st half. Your Lancers should be 4-0 not 2-2. Give me some input, I always like to hear what you have to say. And first year coach at Whittier is doing a good job. 10-9 overall and 3-1 in league.

SHOWDOWN Friday night at Whittier 7pm. Cal Hi vs Whittier for first place for the first half. But dont count La Serna out.

Campa lets get one thing straight no one cares, now SPSwordsmen are what you need to focus on. Roger knew it. Who would care about a school like Pioneer, just ask sports fan original, if there no good, theres not a need for the the effort on this blog.

It good that Pioneer played hard! Every game you should play hard!!! Coach Mata did not QUIT on Pioneer. His wife and him had their 1st baby and it was a good move for him and his family. He has been working at Whittier for 12 years. And losing to Pioneer or who ever its all about the game of sports. So why make a big deal out of it. Coach Mata gave his HEART and SOUL to Pioneer
