Heading into the Final Week -- Girls Hoops
Now that the boys week has been laid out, let's talk some girls hoops.
As with the previous post, let's start in the Del Rio League -
In girls basketball - Wednesday's Games Friday's Games
all at 4:30 p.m. all at 5:15 p.m.
T1. Santa Fe (17-8, 7-1) California at La Serna Pioneer at Santa Fe
T1. Whittier (16-9, 7-1) El Rancho at Pioneer Whittier at California
3. California (14-9, 6-2) Santa Fe at Whittier La Serna at El Rancho
4. La Serna (8-16, 3-5)
5. El Rancho (7-13, 1-7)
6. Pioneer (5-18, 0-8)
Thoughts: Of course, the monster game is Santa Fe at Whittier in Elbow Fest II. I don't remember looking forward to a girls basketball game this season as much as that one. I love the grit from Alexus Guerrero (Santa Fe) and Loren Gurrola (Whittier). It should be great. The interesting team may be Cal-Hi. The Condors already knocked off Santa Fe and will host Whittier in the season finale. The Condors are hoping the Cardinals top the Chiefs so that they will have a chance to split the DRL crown.
Here's the rest of the area squads -
Schurr (12-11, 5-3) clinched the Almont League's final playoff position on Friday by virtue of a 39-37 win over Bell Gardens (10-12, 3-5). The Spartans swept the BG season series and close at Montebello on Tuesday and versus visiting San Gabriel on Friday. Both games are 5:15. While the league title is out of reach, the Spartans are hoping to catch Keppel (11-13, 6-2) for second place and a possible first round home playoff game.
Montebello (6-18, 2-6) is out of the playoff picture but can still end its season on a positive note with a home game versus Schurr (12-11, 5-3) on Tuesday and at Bell Gardens (10-12, 3-5) on Friday. Both games are at 5:15.
Cantwell (17-8, 5-2) has only one game left on its schedule at St. Monica (14-11, 3-3) Thursday at 7 p.m. Should the Cardinals win, they would clinch at least a share of the Camino Real League crown. The Cardinals have already clinched a playoff berth.St. Paul (15-9, 1-5) has to hope for a wild-card berth in the playoffs as it is currently in fourth place in the Del Rey League and cannot reach one of the league's top 3 guaranteed spots. The Swordsmen host St. Joseph's (9-16, 0-6) on Tuesday at 7 before traveling to Serra (19-6, 5-1) on Thursday at 7.
Whittier Christian (14-9, 5-3) is in the fight for its playoff life. The Heralds' 44-42 loss to Valley Christian on Friday was tough as they now have to rebound on Tuesday at 6 p.m. versus league-leading Winward (11-9, 6-1). Whittier Christian, which is in fourth in league, finishes at Montclair Prep (17-5, 6-2) on Thursday at 7 p.m. The top three teams in league all grab playoff spots.
La Habra (8-16, 2-6) is out of the playoff picture but still has quite a challenge in hosting Troy (21-3, 8-0) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before ending the season at Sunny Hills (14-10, 2-6) on Friday at 6 p.m.
La Mirada (5-15, 2-7) concludes a tough season on Friday at home versus Norwalk (10-14, 2-8) at 5 p.m. Previous to that game, the Matadores are on the road at Cerritos (15-7, 7-1) on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
