An overall less than satisfying weekend for area teams. Our teams can play with the "big boys" and I strongly feel that we have some pretty good teams in area but their performance this weekend does not support that.
Starting off with St. Paul losing 10-2 to Esperanza. The Swordsmen coming off a win over Mater Dei (who beat Capo Valley on Saturday)had according to the box score, 5 errors. Someone is being very generous. I think they stopped counting after the 3rd inning. You can not put that many runners on base and expect to stay in the game.
Sonora lost to Marina, La Mirada to Dana Hills, Whittier Crhistain to Capo Valley Christian and Chris Salinas at La Habra could not contain Brea as they lost 5-0.
Granted, they lost to some good teams. But for everyone to take our teams seriously they have to win these games.

Wish I could of seen that Edison-La Mirada game. Owens 1 hits La Mirada but the Matadores were still in it until the bottom of the 7th. Couple of unfortunate events led to the Edison win. Good job by LM to hang tough with a very good baseball team.

If you want to make the drive to South Orange County Whittier Christian takes on Capo Valley Christian at JSerra. Then at 2 tomorrow you have Beckman at La Serna and Brea at La Habra.

Surveying the local baseball scene over the past few years, it is clear that Whittier PONY has nurtured some great talent. This season, there's Encinas, Oddo, Chico, Tim Gonzales at St. Paul. Jared Garcia, Mitch Atilano and Barragan at Cal. Salinas and Cavazos at La Habra. Litchfield and Levesen at Sonora. Nick Loya at La Serna. I'm sure I'm missing many more, but coming after recent players Montoya, Sanchez, Langstaff and Soto at La Serna; Liebert at Cal; Enriques at Whittier; Palacios and Ramos at Pioneer; Garvey at La Habra; and Cacioppo, Cerda, Luitwieler, Nieto, Duran, Danny Gonzales at Sonora, Whittier PONY deserves mention. Those of us who put in the hours back in the day should take pride in how well the kids have done and continue to do.
In Newport Elks games todat Schurr drops a 3-1 game to Segestrom. St. Paul loses in 9 inning heartbreaker 3-2 to JSerra.
St. Paul hosts Mater Dei this Wednesday in a Consolation Bracket game. Mater Dei is coming off a 7-2 loss to Bishop Amat.
I was able to catch the Amat-MD game. I can see why the LA Times is calling Amat one of the top 5 teams in the Southland.

Cal Preps shows 3 local teams in their Southern Section Top 100 rankings. Sonora at 9, St. Paul at 60 and Cal Hi at 83. According to Cal Preps, St. Paul has one of the hardest schedules in the Southern Section.
La Serna comes in at 120, La Mirada at 123 and Whittier Christian at 131. I think WC would be higher but has a bad SOS.
Nice win for La Mirada over Fountain Valley, especially after that debacle with Lakewood.
Next couple of days will shake this all up.

la mirada is a fake and can't compete with real schools, la mirada is always trying to win a CIF ring no-matter what, that has been a goal the school has had for 30+ years. what do their fallers say, the most athletic school in the area. BS!
What about that Cantwell pitcher striking out 17 and losing to a 2 hit shutout by Santa Clara. Cantwell's offense had better step it up come league. Different team from last year though. Last year Cantwell would of been giving up 10 runs thourgh 3 inn.

In Newport Elks pool play yesterday St. Paul gets lit up by Capo Valley. La Habra loses another one after giving up 5 runs in the 2nd including a grand slam. Whittier Christian overwhelms a scrappy but undermanned Saddleback team.

Encinas didn't have a good game and it is early but its game #1 of the season, coaches might of over work him or his arm. He did play alot in the off season. He'll have to improve because amat is waiting.

Tough loss for La Habra. Salinas throws a one-hitter but the Highlanders give up 2 in the bottom of the 7th to give Patriot the game 2-1.
Schurr gets hammered by Costa Mesa 15-1, La Serna battles to a 5-5 tie with Irvine and Whittier Christian blanks Godinez 7-0.
If the games aren't canceled today there are some good games on tap led by St. Paul visitng nationally ranked Capo Valley. Locally, Saddleback is at Whittier Christian, Laguna Hills at La Habra, and Tustin at Schurr.
Not a bad opening round showing for the area teams in what has become one of the better baseball tournaments in the OC.
Hey anonymous: did you forget that La Serna and Cal made the quarters two years ago, with LS beating Montebello and Crespi, before losing 2-1 to South Hills, which went to Dodger Stadium. Last year, LS beat La Quinta in CIF, before losing a close game to Beckman, who made the championship game, losing to South Hills. Baseball is baseball, and the Whittier area kids have played as much travel ball as the OC and IE kids. DRL may be down a bit this year, but it is still a stronger league year in and out than Almont and many others in the area. In 2007 La Serna played Arcadia in their tournament- a D1 team that was supposedly pretty good- and LS beat them and was the better team. DRL is not that bad, anon.
And No Way is Freeway better than DRL. LS whacked La Habra in a pre-season game last year, roughing up Salinas and shutting them down. LH will be lucky to beat Fullerton and Sonora this year.

St. Paul, La Habra, La Serna and Whittier Christian are all in the Newport Elks Tournament. While they are all in different brackets it will be a good test for all of them as they face some of the best teams from the OC and the IE.
where do we get the schedule for the 17Th annual MHS baseball tournament, that I think starts Friday?
We will know how real St. Paul is after the Newport Elks tournament this week. The Swordsmen play some of the top teams in the Southland including Capo Valley, JSerra and Foothill. Because of their bracket they have the potentail other top teams like Mater Dei and Amat. Some of you need to get over your personal bias against SP and acknowledge the talent they have this year. 8 returing seniors and they already have 4 guys committed to playing college ball.
Personally, I would not of had a problem with La Mirada being #1. They have the pitching but lets see what their bats can do before we pronounce them King of the Area. However, they are a very talented squad.
La Habra with only 5 returners will need to step it up to be an area elite team but having the Salinas kid doesn't hurt at all.
Cal Hi, La Serna, and Whittier Christian will make some noise this year.

Give Whittier Christian a look, they have a lot coming back this season and look for them to play some tough schools in the Newport Elks tourney. They also play La Mirada in the St. Paul Easter tourney so that will be interesting.
Should be an interesting season of baseball.

La Habra will be very good. Surprised the name Aaron Porter was not mentioned in the blog. The kid may potentially be a player of the year nominee by seasons end.
Cal will be tough to beat with such a great pitching staff. They are well coached and will be stronger than last season's team.
Can't wait for this season to start.

The movie is more about women fighting for their rights than the game on the field, but the women are credible as baseball players, except maybe Lori Petty. The movie also brought attention to a forgotten piece of baseball history, and it gets extra credit for adding the line "There's no crying in baseball" to the vernacular.
7. The Natural (1984)
Another movie that tends to divide peoples opinions, It's a sentimental view of a slugger and the game. It's based on a novel by Bernard Malamud and features a strong cast led by Robert Redford. Baseball romantics love it and see it as a fable, while more jaded fans say It's overrated and simplistic. Either way, It's a lovely and influential movie.
6. The Bad News Bears (1976)
The best pure baseball comedy, this movie reminded everyone what Little League was really like. Walter Matthau and Tatum O'Neal were perfect in their roles, and all of the foul-mouthed kids fit together beautifully. Don't hold it against this movie that it spawned many more unfunny movies that tried to be like it, including "The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training" and "The Bad News Bears Go to Japan," which somehow starred Tony Curtis.
5. The Pride of the Yankees (1942)
This classic is about baseball the way "Steel Magnolias" was about hairdressers. Much is made about Gary Cooper (as Gehrig) not really being lefthanded, but in this movie it hardly matters. Viewed today, It's a hopelessly sentimental movie, but it was made in a different age and is the best of the baseball melodramas. And at the end, when Cooper gives the "luckiest man on the face of the earth" speech, You'll shed a tear in spite of yourself. Bonus points for appearances by actual Yankees, including Babe Ruth and Bill Dickey.
4. Eight Men Out (1988)
A thoroughly modern look back at a simpler time, this movie does not romanticize baseball's history and captures the time of the Black Sox scandal in an authentic way. John Sayles wrote and directed the movie, based on a book by Eliot Asinof, and does a great job of bringing the complexity of the story to the screen. A great cast helps as well. About the only thing the movie lacks is emotional intensity.
3. Bang the Drum Slowly (1973)
This is the baseball version of "Brian's Song," only better. It started a period of great modern baseball movies and is still regarded by many as the best of the bunch. The movie helped launch the careers of Michael Moriarty as the star pitcher and Robert DeNiro as the dying catcher. Some prefer the Mark Harris novel (he also wrote the screenplay) or criticize the details of the baseball in the movie, but that is quibbling. It's a truly touching film.
2. Field of Dreams (1989)
Only the truly cynical aren't taken by this movie, which captures better than any other the mystical hold that baseball can have over people. Kevin Costner and the rest of the cast are great in this adaptation of W.P. Kinsella's novel "Shoeless Joe." It seems that everyone latches on to something different as their favorite part or as the message of the film. Like baseball itself, It's a simple movie that also proves beautifully complex.
1. Bull Durham (1988)
And It's not even that close. First, "Bull Durham" is far and away the most authentic portrayal of the game, both on and off the field. Baseball is treated with casual reverence: It's a great game, and we love it, but it is a game. Costner is at his best, and Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon are perfect complements. The romance between Costner and Sarandon is also just right. It's all thanks to writer and director Ron Shelton, who spent five years in the minor leagues and cared about doing things right. He avoids the usual sports movie clichés - he filmed Costner catching a foul pop just because he said movies never show the routine plays and creates characters that we like and a world that we don't want to leave.
La Mirada and La Habra should be 1-2. Doesn't matter, they are both the real deal.
St. Paul doesn't have the pop you mention. Chico and Wilson isn't enought. Gabe Encinas can't pitch every game.
