Parental Concerns
Normally, I don't voice my opinion on this blog for several reasons (one being I don't think anyone is interested). However, as we start the spring sports season I can only hope the parental/fan behavior improves.
Over the last few weeks of the playoffs, some of the actions by local fans have been downright embarrassing.
Let me list a few examples.
At the La Serna at Sultana girls soccer Division 4 semifinal game, one La Serna parent/grandparent crossed the field after the game to the Sultana side and attempted to break up the team's huddle because she was disappointed with the officiating. This parent went as far as to yell to the Sultana team "that you were good but you didn't deserve the win."
At the Montclair at El Rancho boys soccer Division 3 second-round game, one El Rancho fan stepped on the field of the play and ran up behind the side judge to surprise him and scream about a questionable offsides call. Luckily, play had been stopped during the penalty. However, the official felt threatened enough that he asked for an administrator, which of course, led the parent to quickly flee.
At a Del Rio League wrestling meet, a Santa Fe parent called out a volunteer scorekeeper because the scorer was having trouble working the scoreboard. The parent even went as far as to suggest the scorer's motives were racist, not knowing that the scorer is a local administrator and has worked with children from all backgrounds for years.
Folks, let me reiterate that we all have a right to be upset, disappointed, maybe even mad at a call or an official or a slow scorekeeper. Also, there have certainly been several bad calls, such as at the La Serna match and at Saturday's St. Paul girls basketball game, that affected the outcome. However, WE DO NOT have the right to berate opposing teams, officials or scorekeepers as those people, for the most part, are just doing their jobs.
On the flip side, I was more than impressed with how many athletes showed grace and class in defeat. In many cases, these youngsters were examples to their parents.
It's time for the parents/fans/grandparents to take a cue from the kids and grow up.

Last comment here - SP Swordsman - I will be first - I am honest and I do have integrity. I believe in kids and will support them until the end no matter who they play for. I believe that we - as parents - need to step back and let our kids be coached by the coaches. The coaches will not be perfect and neither will their bosses in life - their spouses, etc. It teaches them how to live life - how to problem solve and how to cope. I put my childern (and I have a lot of children)in sports to learn dicipline, self control and many other of lifes lessons. I have been lucky and have had 2 D1 full ride scholarships for my kids with a possible other one coming. That is an added plus - but they have learned the lessons that I hope will serve them well in life. What more could I ask for?
Hum..just a mom said:.....You first, you need to have those attributes before you can point them out or are you married to sports fan original?
St. Paul Swordsman - what do you say I said? I never said anything about the paper -if yo want to quote something you need to do it honestly. Integrity is something that is hard to come by, I guess.
Well, it seems as if La Serna does not believe that their soccer parents can behave with such bad behavior but I have specifically heard a parent that I know say to take a girl's legs out. That was a few years ago and I know that the mom in question is the mom of a senior and a junior on the team. I have respect for the coach who does not condone this behavior at all, but I have heard this myself. There are many other instances that I have heard over the years and my whole point is no school is perfect, but it seems the parents and the sidelines are the ones with the bad behaviors from all the schools. The athletes might have some attitudes during the games but they walk away friends. The athletes are the ones with class and are the examples to the parents.
Fan - I have heard this myself and you were wrong with your statements with Campa and you are wrong with me. As far as being disrespectful to your girls - never. I do not say anything about the players at all. As far as your sidelines - maybe you need to stand back and just listen. It IS pretty bad and maybe the parents should carry themselves with a little more class.
Helena - How rude to call Santa Fe ghetto - there are some wonderful athletes there as well.
I am not part of either of these schools and no school is all perfect and no school is all ghetto. We all need to grow up and respect the athletes on either side4 of the ball in every sport.
Hey 'fan': Thanks for the support.
'Just a mom' has her head in the sand. Regardless, I stand by my previous post.
just a mom,
You need to back off those ridiculous statements right now. Those type of statements are NEVER made on the La Serna sideline.
I don't even to post something long because what you are saying is false and just downright disrespectful to the players and parents of La Serna.
Miss Bar is hoping for a miracle, because she doesn't want to raise tuition again but it looks like she has too.The near by communities can't afford much according to her.
all schools have kids and parents who make mistakes but Sp swordsmen can't point a finger, because from what I remember it was ugly against other Catholic schools especially the likes of Sp vs amat, is was a gang fight with the parents, kids and both schools knew it. I took both my kids out and enrolled them in Pioneer a much better atmosphere, environment.
just a mom said:.....its what has been happening for years, the whittier new paper has always given them a free pass. and their behavior comes from up-bringing. "so shame on you"----St Paul said:
How ignorant "SP Swordsmen" is for that post! I'm ashamed for him.
who's ignorant you!!!!!!!! SP's softball and baseball will teams kill the area programs.
Unfortunately it IS the reputation of the sidelines of La Serna's girls soccer team to be very rude and that is a shame. For years - they bully and often yell such things as "take out her legs". This has been going on for years and is very disappointing. All of the best girls play together in club and we all know each other pretty well. Every school and every sport has its poor sports but La Serna is pretty well known for the bad attitudes of the parents. I really hope this improves because after all it is a game and the athletes are doing their best on both sides of the ball. Maybe parents should all take a deep breath from both sides and step back and just let the kids play.
Andrew,
Thanks for posting this. As a local DRL coach I have zero tolerance for any of my players or parents approaching the officials or the other team after a match. I have a meeting with the parents prior to the start of the season just to make sure they understand this rule and more importantly what is expected of them during the season. I may not always agree with the calls and I may voice may opinion to the refs during the game, but must all try and remember that we are there to support these young athletes.
When can we expect to see the All Area teams???
Campa, I'll admit that I was wrong since I now know who you were talking about.
La Serna did not condone what the parent did and we apologize to Sultana for that. It had more to do with the granddaughter not playing many minutes in the game than the loss. Its unfortunate that you always get that one parent who makes the fan base look bad.
And SP Swordsmen, that is a very ignorant thing to say. Unfortunately, these types of incidents happen at EVERY high school athletic event at one time or another. La Serna is not known for this behavior either. It happens, but its laughable that you try to make it seem like its their reputation. In fact no school in the area has a reputation for parent misconduct. There are always incidents, but one school does not carry the title of acting out of line.
How ignorant "SP Swordsmen" is for that post! I'm ashamed for him. NO! La Serna is NOT known for this kind of behavior. I know several current students and athletes plus several who have since graduated and to say they are known for that behavior is ignorant and out of line. Perhaps you have seen one example of a parent or fan that has crossed the line by cussing at the officials or opposing fans and/or players, or even threatening them. We all have at every school. But don't classify them as a whole that "is known for this kind of behavior." And "Anonymous" this applies to you too. You people show how ignorant and uneducated you are when you slam each other's schools. Thanks Andrew for addressing this issue.
Don't take the inane mutterings of a person who calls himself a Swordsmen to be the way the rest of us Swordsmen think.
It is unfortunate that several individuals who claim to be Swordsmen come on these blogs and then post comments that reflect badly on the rest of us.
I've seen that behavior at St. Paul games. Parents: its just a game. Let the kids play on the field.
No surprise that Santa Fe wrestling parents/fans are causing problems! They are the definition of GHETTO!! When things don't go their way they cry and complain. They still have a parent involved with the program who attacked another parent at a YOUTH wrestling tournament. When will they learn?
La Serna is know for this kind of behavior, this time it was only the parents/grandparents.
Fan,
I don't think we're talking about the same person. I was standing on the Sultana side waiting to confirm the goal with their coach when this parent/grandparent crossed over to the other side.
This person first came up to me and asked "where the officials ran off to?"
I physically had to put my hand out to stop this fan from heading into the huddle.
This same person complained to me about the officiating (not about anything else) and continued to raise his/her displeasure over the officiating while he/she was about 10 feet away from the Sultana huddle when the final comment was made.
It got to the point where a Sultana assistant coach walked over and was about to say something just as the parent walked away.
Campa,
The La Serna example you gave was really horrible and was not how it happened.
The parent was pissed at that student who took off his shirt and was running around the field yelling Sultana and who even ran near and behind La Serna's huddle and yelled it more and more times.
The parents were disappointed already with how the game ended and that kid pushed some of the parents to the point where things were said on both sides.
Should the parent have said what they said? No not at all. But to make it a one-sided story making La Serna look bad is a really bad journalism job on your part. If the kid wouldn't have got near the La Serna sideline, it wouldn't have been said. And what the parent said, was towards him, not their entire sideline.
Thanks for that post....The fans do get completely carried away at these games...The atheletes themselves for the most part do show good sportsmanship and class...keep up the good work Andrew
