Over the last week, I've surveyed six Del Rio League baseball head and assistant coaches to get their opinions about both El Rancho and Santa Fe.

We have a big day of games listed here. Hopefully, there will be some decent crowds.

There are two locals on the ballots - Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria (Rio Hondo College) and New York Mets catcher Rod Barajas (Santa Fe High School).

Here's the rundown with today's baseball and softball schedule. I know there were some rescheduled games. If I missed any games, please feel free to list them here.

Former La Mirada High School linebacker Jack Francis recently signed a letter of intent to attend Idaho State University of the Big Sky Conference and NCAA Division 1 Subdivision (formerly 1-AA).

Montebello High School football coach Pete Gonzalez took some time out of his busy schedule to sit down with the paper on Wednesday afternoon and discuss the Oilers upcoming 2010 schedule.

I know of about 6-8 area players that are close to signing their letters of intent over the next few weeks and others that will do so not too far after. Please feel free to use this blog as an outlet to announce where you'll be going in the future.

Is it me or does the greater Whittier area badly need its own baseball recovery act in terms of stadiums?

One of the most celebrated runners in Whittier High School history, senior Christine Cooperstein, has decided where she will do her running over the next four years.

After a successful six-year run that included two CIF-Southern Section Championships, Whittier Christian High School girls basketball coach Bill Crammer is taking the next step.

It wasn't even that close at Saturday evening's 6th annual Sargent's Sporting Goods East vs. West All-Star boys basketball game at Whittier College as the East side went up by as many as 31 points before cruising to an 89-75 win.

The 6th annual Sargent's Sporting Goods East vs. West All-Star girls basketball game at Whittier College was a pretty entertaining affair won by the East side 68-65.

I'll be the first to admit that these rosters are WAY overdue but I've been working with the fine folks over at Sargent's and this is what they gave me.

As far as game info goes, the girls all-star game is set for 4 p.m. on Saturday at Whittier College while the boys game is slated for 6:30 p.m.

Gates open at 3 p.m. and admission is $10 while children 5 and under are free.

I had hoped to walk away convinced from Thursday's championship game of the St. Paul Tournament of who was definitely the area's best team.

The Whittier Daily News Boys Basketball All-Area First, Second Team and Third team were announced in today's print and online edition.

St. Paul's 5-0 win over Simi Valley and La Mirada's 15-1 victory over Santa Fe in Wednesday's semifinals of the St. Paul Easter Tournament sets up the area's dream match in Thursday afternoon's tournament championship game.

Montebello High School basketball senior Andrew Torres called to confirm he made a verbal commitment to Division II Humboldt State in Arcata early this morning.

St. Paul baseball coach Casey Morales said Monday's second-round action of the St. Paul Tournament has been postponed until Tuesday because of inclement weather.

I must apologize to the La Mirada football faithful, I thought I posted this info about junior running back/linebacker Max Gama up two weeks ago.
