As it Stands...

Here's the local baseball schedule for today.

El Rancho's Joe Sanchez

La Serna's Ryan Cordova

California's Nathan Blount

DEL RIO LEAGUE

Santa Fe at La Serna, 3:15 p.m.
California at Whittier , 3:15 p.m.
Pioneer at El Rancho, 3:15 p.m.

Standings
League Overall
El Rancho 4-2 12-3
La Serna 4-2 8-8-1
California 4-2 8-8
Whittier 3-3 7-6
Santa Fe 3-3 6-8
Pioneer 2-9 0-6

Are the top teams rising and the bottom ones sinking or is the Del Rio league battle more than a three-horse race?

What about the Suburban League? La Mirada (11-8, 4-1) opened up with a loss to Norwalk and has won four straight. The Matadores have rebounded from a tough start to win 8 of 9 games and host Artesia (5-11, 1-2) today at 3 p.m. Will the Matadores be challenged or are they just waiting for Mayfair and Bellflower?

Is it possible the area's most concerning team owns one of the better records. That's the case with Whittier Christian and its 12-6 nonleague record. Unfortunately for the Heralds, the Olympic League is no joke and they're currently tied for third in league with Valley Christian as both teams own 2-3 league marks. The Heralds host Los Angeles Baptist (6-9, 0-5) today at 3:30 p.m. in a game they could use to build momentum heading into next week's critical two-game series with Campbell Hall (11-4, 4-1).

As for St. Paul (12-7, 4-1), the Swordsmen are hoping to finish off a sweep of Bishop Montgomery today at 3:15 p.m. in Del Rey League action over in Torrance.

First of all it was BASEBALL not FOOTBALL. They are not," baseless rumors" I decided to personally ask the assistant, and he said he would take the job " if a teaching position opened up'. By the way it has everything to do wuith Almont League coverage. He is a great coach, this move would only make the league much more competative. Thanks for your (lack of )in depth reporting.

Swordsman's doesn't play jc baseball, but you all just feel good Lol, burke who?

On Tuesday, Ben Burke beat the #2 ranked Cypress JC pitching for Santa Ana JC who is currently ranked #1 in Southern California JC's. He is 4-1 and has 8 starts according Santa Ana's stats. SA now has a 2 games lead in the Orange Empire Conference.

Oiler Parent,

I've deleted both your posts because they're baseless rumors. This has nothing to do with Almont League coverage.

This has to do with an anonymous parent taking shots at the Schurr High School football program. When and if your claim becomes true, then I'll will post something about it.

Liebert was a heck of a pitcher with a heck of a temper. Always a standout form back in his PONY days. I heard that he went to Cerritos right after he graduated, then quit. Don't know if that's true, but as you said, it is almost as much about mental toughness, stability, self-control, etc as talent at the college level. The coaches at that level can be brutal! If you have buttons that can be pushed, they will find them.

Actually, quite a few DRL players since 2006 have played at least some college, and several are still playing. LS has had 8 that I can think of. Cal, ER, SF and Whittier have some as well. What ever happened to Ronnie Palacios, one of the most talented DRL players the last few years? I know he has back issues, but I'd thought for sure he'd be playing somewhere this year. A college level center or right fielder, for sure.

fact: You are right..college level talent is hard to find. Do you know anything about Liebert? Is he still playing. He is not on Rio's roster. Burke is doing well over at Santa Ana College (last I looked). It can get pretty mental when you get to college.

St. Paul kings of baseball? When it comes to Amat you are just the court jester. LOL!

Why do you always leave out the Montebello schools out? also la habra and W. christian. be fair

DRL is down in pitching- there is no Ben Burke, Soto, Villalobos, Liebert, Muniz, etc. of the last few years- but leagues go up and down like that. Pinedo is a good pitcher, and C. Burke does a good job for a non-pitcher. What DRL does have is some pretty strong youth leagues feeding its schools, so the competitive level is always pretty good, even if not always full of college level talent, like the present time. Whittier area baseball has always been good, going back decades. You SP and BA nut-huggers are a riot. Get lives, dudes!

Whatever! Post when the Big Dawg of Baseball comes into the area to beat up on your teams. Thats right. Cantwell and St.Paul are shaking in their boots just by the mention of big bad Amat.

This young man (J. Sanchez) is getting some playing time and making the best out of it. I think they just brought up another freshmen and he rip a double in his first at bat. League is tough because Cal Hi and La Serna are strong this year plus anyone in our league can mix it up. Good luck guys.
