I still believe some coaches in the league, still have hard feeling with the old coach from WHS. He coached a lot of dirty stuff. Coach Mata had to re-teach those boys from not throwing elbow, or hitting the player away from the ball. I think he did a good job in taming them. I just found out that Coach Mata and his staff will be coaching the East Team for Sargents Sporting Goods All-Star game this weekend. What a honor for him and his staff and the school. I heard the East team schools are Cal Hi,La Habar,La Mirada,La Serna,Sonora,Whittier Christian, and Whittier.

Joey should of made it for Santa Fe! The 2 player from Santa Fe that made it are Jeffrey Nadal and redmond Pompa. Wow

Cardinal Fan: your team is in the spotlight in my book!!! just because a player doesn't make the list doesn't mean that coaches & fans don't already know that they deserved to be. every coach, parent and fan knows that whittier deserves ALOT of respect and praise.
Marquez did not make All-Star team, sad that santa fe does not have a representative for that game. i thought each school was to be represented in the All-Star game?? Can't beleive the coach didn't fight harder to have his player represent santa fe.

Both of you guys are right! I'm just a fan who wants his team to be in the SPOTLIGHT! Joey from Santa Fe did played his heart out this year and he should of made the West All-Star Team for Sargents Sporting Goods that will be played Saturday at Whittier College.

And for Whittier next year, yes they get Isiah back and that will help them out alot. I saw 2 spring game at Whittier Christian and Isiah look good he needs to get back in shape.

And For Coach Mata he need to believe in himself as a good young coach in this league. I believe if he did that at Pioneer, they would of won more games then 95 games. He coaches with alot of passion!

to CARDINAL FAN: I'm sure Gamboa is a great player, as many of the boys from whittier are. But your remark about him playing better than Marquez from santa fe doesn't sit well with me, it is much easier to play your best when u have a coach who knows the game of basketball and enjoys watching his players excel, for Marquez and the many talented boys on the santa fe team.....not the case. Marquez played his heart out, coaches placed their vote for him on first team because on game day he was the man they knew they had to TRY to shut down if they wanted a win.
I wish those whitter boys a great season next year, they have a coach who's true passion is to teach the game of basketball. I can't wait to see them win league.

Henry Wineburger what are you talking about. The coaches vote for this not the paper or fans. Okay now at issue is that Whittier didn’t get another player. Too bad, it is not any one’s fault. About Mata giving up his coach of the year for another first team player I commend that. To make Mata look like this great savior of Del Rio, please calm down. He is a stand up guy, but he also had players this year in Whittier and molded them into a team. He also has a very experienced assistant that knows the game. Whittier had more talent than Cal, Pioneer, Santa Fe, and El Rancho. They were younger than LS and that may have hurt them. I named the players that Whittier had earlier that I felt will make a difference next year and throw in Isaiah you should expect them to take league. Now as far as Pioneer having Rios named first league; they did beat Whittier. Marquez on first team from Santa Fe? I would have put Sam from Whittier in that spot. The two Cal Hi kids, Carter and Keith had good years for Cal this season.

Come on Gamboa played better then 2 from Cal and 1 player from Santa Fe who made the 1st team. Rule of thumb, the champion team get most of the votes. Oh well I hope this makes the young cardinals come out and play hard next year.

I see your point, but then gain, you tell me which 1st team Lancer you would replace with which 2nd team Crdinal and then match their game against eachother.....I still stand by the 1st team selections from each team.

Salinas and Ramirez' game far outshined Gordon and Gamboa's.

Yes! Whittier started out with a bang, betaing the Lancers by 5 (I think) but once Lancer's got their groove, the Lancer win was far greater the 2nd round.

I think the balance was the Player of the year and Coach of the Year coming from each team.

Talking to Coach Mata he said he would give up his coach of the year, just to get another 1st team player. Coach Mata is a stand up guy. Things what he did at Pioneer winning 95 games and making the play-offs 5 out of the 8yrs there. Keep up the good work.

But Whittier should of gotten 2 players on the 1st team. Lancer Fan are you telling me Whittier wasn't that good to get 2 players. Come on La Serna had to chase Whittier this year. Whittier was in 1st place from day 1, when league started. With a young team that Coach Mata had this year. I believe that some coaches in league still have hard feeling of the old coach at Whittier (Coach Varos) and that's why. And for Coach Mata being Coach of the Year in the Del Rio League, that was an easy pick for the coaches to vote him in. If the coaches have a problem with the coach they should talk to him and don't take it out on the kids.

much respect to whitter coach who put his ego to the side, learned the game from those who knew it and produced a successful team. Can't wait to see them win it all next year!! The world of High School sports needs more coaches like Joey Mata, he understands that the sports program belongs to the kids and the fans who love them and not to him!!

Yes! I am a Lancer fan and saw every game they played this season, which means I got to see every player in the DEl Rio League play....TWICE.

If you look at the player and not the school he belongs to, THAT IS AN ACCURATE 1st Team. At least from my standpoint. As for the number of votes for La Serna and the number of votes for Whittier, Whittier has 7, while LS has 4, not counting the League MVP.

Standard practice has been for Honorable Mention to "honor" the kids who may be graduating and have given 4 years and a whole lot of heart to the program.

For those who don't agree with the list, post YOUR suggestions for 1st Team and 2nd Team. let the debate begin as opposed to the bashing.

The curse of Roger Murray still lingers on, why not give all the first team votes to La Serna?????

Maybe you're right on ER being on the honorable list. But at El Rancho we love our kids, just like every school.

This was voted on by the coaches not the parents. LS had a very talented team (by Del Rio Standards) and the shared title was just that. LS lost two games in league becasue team was not playing well together early on and both losses could have easily been wins. LS avenged both those losses in a dominating way. So yes LS did get more players voted in. Gary Matthews had a really good season and Sam Gamboa plays a very tight controlled game and Juan Quintero and Kevin Medina will only get better. Next year it might just be Whittier's turn, this is something for Whittier to work off of. Call it a little motivation.

Next year the Del Rio League will be much stronger. There is a lot of talent in the league and now with some new younger coaches with a lot to prove and a lot of energy I think the league is on a good path.

Wow La Serna and Whittier both share league and Whittier only gets one first team player. La Serna gets the MVP and two first team player. I don't understand that.

this is cute! everyone gets an award... how is it that a team can have 7 members nominated for all-league. I thought 1st, 2nd and honorable mention each nominated 5 players? this means that only 15 players from the league would be nominated...not 30. but this is better, everyone is a winner...
