Congratulations to the Whittier Christian High School softball team, which defeated San Marino 1-0 in Thursday afternoon's CIF-Southern Section Division 5 quarterfinals.
I've strung together a few items from today's football notebook here just in case anyone missed them. Now, in today's notebook there were no comments from new Warren High coach Gil Jimenez, who spoke with the paper after deadline. I hope to post snippets of the conversation tonight or by Friday morning at the latest.
There's only one softball game on tap today as Whittier Christian is the area's lone survivor.
The rosters and coaches for the 14th annual Whittier Rotary Club All-Star Game have been announced. The game is set for June 9 at York Field in Whittier for 3 p.m.

The senior-only game is scheduled for Wednesday, June 9, at York Field in Whittier at 6 p.m., following the all-star softball game at 3.
I apologize for a bonehead mistake in today's paper. Both the St. Paul and La Mirada baseball teams are not playing in "Thursday's quarterfinals" because the quarterfinals are on Friday.
Only softball is on Thursday. I apologize for the inconvenience.
Here are today's CIF-Southern Section baseball and softball area second-round playoff final scores. Thanks.
About a month ago, I posted a blog entitled "Area Upgrade" and listed how each of the 13 area schools baseball facilities fared (in my humble and meaningless opinion).
At the beginning of the season there was a vigorous debate as to which baseball league was the toughest in the area.
I apologize for not posting earlier on the Rio Hondo College baseball team. Hopefully, those interested in the Roadrunners progress read the articles in the paper or online.
Okay folks, we're down to the final five area teams in the CIF-SS baseball and softball playoffs. If you have a chance to duck out from work early, please support the locals. I'll create a thread called today's scoreboard at around 6:30 p.m. and starting posting scores as soon as I get them. Good luck to all the locals.
For the sixth straight time this postseason, the Rio Hondo College baseball team found itself victorious. The Roadunners defeated Northern California top seed College of San Mateo, 18-6, in Friday night's CCCAA State Tournament Final Four at Fresno City College.
Here are today's final scores. Thanks.
After a hectic Thursday, today's activity is pretty light. Only two baseball teams are in action. Here's the list.
Oilers baseball coach Ralph Gutierrez checked in at about 9 p.m. last night with some information about a possible protest regarding Thursday's 3-2 loss at South Hills.
Here are some scores for today's CIF-Southern Section baseball and softball area first-round playoff games. I'll keep updating as I find out more. Thanks.
I almost forgot to mention that former El Rancho High ace Cesar Ramos is back in town for a short two-game road trip as a member of the San Diego Padres.
The first round gets underway for just about everyone (except St. Paul and La Mirada). Here's the list. Let's get some people out to these games. As for scores, I'll create a new thread entitled "Today's Scoreboard" and will post scores as soon as they come in.
It was a banner day for the St. Paul High School football program.
The Swordsmen's Daniel Trejo and Mark Cabral signed collegiate letters of intent on their Santa Fe Springs campus on Wednesday.
I know the area isn't a exactly a huge hockey haven but some congratulations are due to Whittier resident Mitchell Callahan.
The 18-year-old recently signed a three-year deal to play with the Detroit Red Wings. That's right... the Detroit Red Wings.
Here are some scores for today's wild-card playoff action. I'll keep updating as I find out more. Thanks.
The CIF-Southern Section pairings came out yesterday afternoon. I'm not sure how you folks would like to follow your teams but I've included a manual list and then a PDF files for the softball playoffs. Good luck to all the locals.

The baseball and softball playoffs get underway today in wildcard action. This may be a good time to start feeling clammy so that you can cut out from work before 3:15 p.m. Here's the list of games. Check back here later for updated scores.
There's a first time for everything and that includes making history.
Over the weekend, the Rio Hondo College baseball team swept its way through the Santa Ana College Southern California Super Regional Tournament and clinched its first-ever berth in this weekend's CCCAA State Tournament Final Four at Fresno City College.
It was at the midway point of the Freeway League season that La Habra, the defending league champ, seemed destined for third place.
Then the Highlanders made their move, winning five straight to force a three-way split between La Habra, Fullerton and Sunny Hills.
The Whittier Christian High School girls softball team picked up the one accolade missing for last year's trophy case -- an Olympic League title.
The Spartans may just be the area's best story. First-year coach Jackie Montanez not only lead Schurr to its first title since 2006 but its first undefeated run through league with a 10-0 mark.
Last week, the California High School girls softball team clinched an undefeated run in the Del Rio League and subsequent league title for a second straight year.
Former St. Paul High School defensive coordinator Gil Jimenez is inching his way closer to the area as he's recently accepted the head coaching position at Warren High School.

I received a call this morning from my distinguished colleague, San Gabriel Valley Tribune Editor Fred Robledo, going on and on about his favorite team, Bishop Amat High School, and about how it was playing for a national championship and was going to beat up St. Paul and blah blah blah blah blah.
Then St. Paul goes out and stuns the Lancers, 3-2. While I usually don't take sides, great job men.
You've gotta give it to coach Tony Nieto and the California High School baseball team. For the second year in a row, the Condors are Del Rio League champions after a thrilling 3-2 win on Wednesday afternoon at La Serna.
Congratulations to the La Mirada High School baseball team for capturing its 11th Suburban League title in 12 years yesterday via a 7-3 win over league rival Bellflower.
It's a good day of action highlighted by a certain rivalry game. Here's the list.
There's no other way to say it, "I goofed." In my advance of today's big baseball game, I listed that La Serna was at California today and then the Lancers were the home team come Friday.
That's a mistake. La Serna is hosting today and California on Friday at 3:15 p.m. My apologies.
There are several important games, including possible league title games including La Mirada baseball and California and Schurr softball. Here's the list.
It's a light schedule highlighted by the Del Rey League and boys volleyball playoffs.

Here's today schedule. There's a full plate of action.
There are only a couple of weeks, maybe a month left in the prep career of Whittier Christian High standout pitcher Courtney McGee. If you haven't seen the Cal Baptist-bound McGee, she's definitely worth it.
Softball leads the way with several big games. Here's the list.
Long Beach Wilson coach Mario Morales was gracious enough to share his West Team All-Star roster. While most of the athletes noted here will play in the 605 Classic on June 5, this roster is still somewhat tentative.
California coach Jim Arnold was gracious enough to share his East Team All-Star roster. While most of the athletes noted here will play in the 605 Classic on June 5, this roster is still somewhat tentative.
About five weeks ago, I created a thread for questions. Here are the responses from those inquiries and here is your chance to ask more questions. If I missed your question from last week, just post it again here. I will try to get back to all questions within a week. Thanks.
In case anyone was interested, here is how our locals are ranked in the latest CIF-Southern Section Polls.
It's a full plate today. Here's the games.
