Breaking News...Gil Jimenez Gets Back in the Game

| | Comments (70) |

Former St. Paul High School defensive coordinator Gil Jimenez is inching his way closer to the area as he's recently accepted the head coaching position at Warren High School.

Jimenez was last in the area in 2008 in the final season of a three-year stint as defensive coordinator with St. Paul under Pete Gonzalez and helped lead the Swordsmen to a 2007 CIF-Southern Section Western Division Title.

The Utah State alumnus spent last year as the defensive line coach at Rosemead High under coach Matt Koffler. Jimenez was also the head boys basketball coach.

Interestingly enough, it was Koffler who spoke highly of Warren and recommended Jimenez not pass up the chance to take the job.

Koffler spent the 2002 season as the outside linebacker coach with the Bears after leaving Artesia High.

Kofler has since named Larry Flores, formerly of Los Altos, as his new line coach.

The credit for the breaking news goes to blogger "Football Man."

Well, there is so much to say about coach Jimenez. He left SP because of personal reasons and was trying the public system. Yet, his heart had always been at SP and was offered a coaching position which he evaluated and left all the benefits of Glenn to come back to SP and make a difference. He believed that the players at SP had their heart to win but were not physically fit (height and strenght) to beat the other players from other teams.

He eats, sleeps and breaths football and it is constantly thinking on how to improve. Nevertheless, his temper strikes out when he does not meet his objectives and fails. Being a failure has been an issue of him and unfourtunately he takes out his frustrations on the players. He has failed in many aspects of his life and still lives on the past when he was an atlhete in High School and expects everybody to live up to his expectations.

He is dedicated, he means well and trully has a good heart but he is a person that does not think before he speaks. I know it sounds contradictory but for the "football Guru" the game it is really all he has to prove that he really isn't a failure. So in a way give the man a break, talk to him and tell him to get an anger management class because he can sincerely get to appreciate your kids.
As far as loyalty, hmm only to his friends as I have seen because he is always craiving attention and believes he was brought into this world by Zeus.

He is arrogant, he does think he is better than others and will tell you in a heart beat. Eventhough I do not wish him any wrong and do not wish him any well either. I believe after reading all your posts that God is trying to teach him something but he has not really learned anything yet.

Mel Gibson was playing the field. He wasn't hitched, engaged, or even cohabitating along with her so that is not a issue. They do know they aren't going to discover anything. Just hoping to discover an additional bottom feeder like Oks. Goal would be to smear his name yet again. Disregard the Russian mafia, this is really a mafia of a completely different flavor backing up Oksana. They are simply getting ever more anxious and I don't think the judge is loving it at all.

I never thought I would agree with this opinion, but I’m starting to see things differently.

I agree that the Montebello football program has finally taken a turn in the right direction, and now finally after several years of losing seasons and poor coaching, we can be proud of our program again.
Good job Pete, I just heard about your new coaching staff and all the experience and titles they bring with them, Oiler football is back baby!!!

True Blue & Gold said:

First of all... I have been in the stands during the first two weeks of spring ball at Montebello, and each day I have observed carefully the energy and enthusiasm this team has this year, WOW... is it scary. For the first time in years, this team is finally showing "Unity & Pride", I get goose bumps watching them work as hard as they are. We may have lost some Coaches to other programs in the off-season, but now I realize they would have never understood about Oiler Pride!!

Coach Gonzalez has brought a whole new level to Oiler Football that has been missing for years, these kids are finally working hard not only on the field, but in the classroom, thanks to the mandatory study hall program that the team enforces each day year round.

For years Montebello has failed to live up to the level of "Tradition & Pride" they once had. But I believe this is going to be the year that we rejuvenate and regain our strength and dominance in the area once again.

All of the pre-season rankings I have seen so far do not even consider us a playoff thought in this new division we have joined. That is just fine, I think we are better off flying under the radar, and surprising everyone in the end.

Gil Jimenez is a good coach and definity deserves a chance at Warren. My son played for him and watching from the side lines and during games, good coaching do not make up for bad behavior. He was crazy to say the least. Some call this passion. I call it "You need to change your attitude and keep your passion in check to succeed". He left a program to go to another program and this seems to be his MO. Maybe he will stay more than 1 year and prove himself. Happy he has left the Rosemead building....

First, Im not related to Pete Gonzales or anyone in his family. Second, I didn't blame the kids for lack of talent. It is what it is. Anyone with a football background knows this.I meerly said that they do not have the talent to match up with other teams. Nothing wrong with that. It's the truth. You can't make talent. Your born with it. You can't make a big kid be a stud. He is or he's not. Bottom line.
Third, you said there was a lot of talent. Who are you refering to? I didn't see one kid get a ride to a four year school . Did you?
As for being an old oiler that never won. Think again mouth. My team went 12-1 my senior year twenty years ago. So to answer your question, We have won before.
It's weird that you say your a parent. Did you not see all the progress the kids made outside of football? School and study hall etc.. I did because I asked. You only see what you wanna see. Open your fat eyes and look outside the box. It takes leadership to make kids follow you . I saw that this year. As for the rumbling, who really cares. I know I don't. It's was not my decision to hire him but I'm glad they did. Anyways I hope things get better because your right about one thing. 4-6 is not very good. Things can't get worse just better. I hope you support the Oilers this year and be a leader and not a bigmouth like your showing......

Oiler Football said:

Oiler Pride,

Wow blaming the kids! Either you are Pete"s Family or One of the old oilers than know absolutely nothing about Real Football! Any Oiler that claims they actually had good football there doesn't know squat! I am a oiler parent and you must have been on the sidelines with your Family because there was a lot of grumbles in the stands! I didn't come on here to defend anyone, I was just simply stating that both the offense and the defense were to blame and that has to be the Head coach that takes responsibility. But you assume to know who I am because you don't want to think that there is someone actually criticizing your precious blood! There was a lot of talent on last years team and to blame it on the kids is pathetic! I hope none of the kids on this years team reads this because they will feel horrible! That doesn't sound like you are a true oiler but rather someone related to Pete. If we fail this year who are you going to blame?

You need to pull your head out and look again. I have been apart of Montebello football for the last twenty years. I played there and have went to just about every game since then. I was proud of the job they did with what they had. The talent level at Montebello stinks. You "say what about this and that." I say they are finally being coached since Rihn left. Coach Gonzalez is a breath if fresh air as far as I'm concerned. You can't teach talent and every game they were not playing against the same level of talent. But they still were in every game except Rowland. A few scores here and there and they have a great season with crap talent. This is either Johnny Macias or one of thoses jerkoff coaches that just quit. Every parent that I spoke with was happy with the coaching staff. Most of the kids are doing things they have never done like lifting weight and study hall. Being held accountable for the first time. Football is a privilidge not a right. So to all the haters out there, Go somewhere else if you don't like it. We at Montebello support Coach G and his staff. Keep plugging away and bring Montebello back to where we used to be. It's going to take time we true football fans know this. We need the talent to compete. Any good coach or anyone with any kind of knowledge would know this. Good luck this year. Oilerville is on the right track!!!

Oiler Football said:

When did Montebello's Offense Score 40 points? if I remember correctly that game the defense scored once, the special teams scored once and then the special team or defense (I can't remember) recovered a fumble on the 1 yard line. So at best the offense scored 21 points. How about the Alhambra game when Montebello was going in to score the winning TD and they call a reverse pass in the redzone! And the Schurr game once again the defense scored first and the alhambra game the defense scored first as well. Or how about the Bellflower game when Montebello is winning and its the 4th quarter and the offense throws and INT! Why were they throwing the ball anyways and it gave the ball to bellflower in the redzone Luckily the defense bailed us out! No one should be blaming the Offense or the Defense,if there is anyone to blame, blame the HEAD COACH after all he hired both of those guys! Anyways I hope the Oilers get it fix this year cause We are better than 3-7!

To Great Hire

Lets see it was Pete's sons fault that Montebello lost their 1st league last year scoring 40 points to watch Andy's defense to give up 42 points. Or let's see the next league game Montebello scored 28 points but Andy's defense gave up 34 points. Instead of standing up for Andy how about holding him a bit accountable? Should we keep going? Oh we cant because after the next game is when he quit without saying anything to another person or coach. In fact, from my understanding he didn't talk to another coach on the staff for months? Your right this is Pete's sons fault? You would think being a man and sticking through hard times together is what you should be judged on? Great Hire how you defend a man who quit on his team, coaches, a school and a community only shows why people like Andy find someone to defend a person like him. You must obviously hang out with him? I do know Pete and I also know his coaches. He doesn't go around and talk bad about them and that includes Andy. I know he actually protects them the best he can. In Fact if not mistaken he also let Andy work at his Bar and Grill restaurant because Andy needed a job. Ya thats the way a guy like Andy shows how to be a standup guy. Oh ya I forgot "Once a Swordsman always a Swordsman" lol. That must also mean when they fail or quit too. Quit sounding like a jealous person who didn't get their opportunity yet? To also clear the record Andy quit after the Schurr game and since has agreed to coach at El Modena with his buddy Tezannic, then was going to coach at Chino High, then Servite, then took a job at Los Altos and has quit that one to go to Warren all this before the start of spring football? Great Hire!

Football Fan,

As far as Andy goes, your crazy that LA job was a joke. When Arellanes hired him on he hired him on as a DC, then one of his buddies comes along and he gives the DC job to him and drops Andy down to special teams. To top it off the guy he hires has zero experience at DC at the Varsity level. The Montobello job with Pete was another joke. When Pete pulls his head out and is more concern about the team and less concern about developing his son as a coach at the teams expense then maybe quality coaches will stay in the program.

Great hire?
Please go back and read where u said "great coaches will stay at Montebello" Reason being I have no idea who you are talking about. If leaving a program during week 8 as a DC is great then your right. Andy is nothing but a gutless turd for leaving. Go ask the players what they think of him. Who cares what Gonzalez thinks of him . It's the players that replay your legacy not your head coach. It's hard to imagine him getting a job on his own and not through a hand me down like he got with Jimenez. As for those others coaches that left. I have no idea about the greatness your refering to. I have coached with all of those guys and not one of them have head coaching ability except Jimenez. If that's what they choose then so be it. But do it with the pride and honor you preach everyday. Don't just get up and leave like you didn't matter.
I heard that Gonzales hired new coaches that have made a huge difference in a short time. Either way football is around the corner so we will see....

I had the pleasure of working with coach Jimenez at Rosemead High School. He is a great coach that motivated our football program to go beyond the limits, yes some kids did quit but it was because they could not handle the pressure or more importantly the discipline. He gave more than 100% and yes he screamed and yelled but we are talking about football. He has a lot to offer to any school that will have him. Best of luck to you coach.

I won't disagree with Jimenez being a good coach. He is. What I do not agree with is the way he does things. He should really consider who he is taking with him. Andy Guerrero is a king of all bozo's. That guy left Montebello and then left Los Altos in a matter of 6 months. What does that say about his loyalty? The guy is not ready to be a lead guy. Maybe a coach with no responsibilities. But as I heard, he has no heart. I feel torn because I coached with him as well and didn't figure him as a quitter. I hope things don't get bad over there. If they do then look out!

I agree with these past comments. Truth is Coach Jimenez is something else. Parents love him or hate him there is no middle with him. My grandson played for him at SP and he was very tempermental. As for Coach Guerrero he is a weak coach, we ran into him and he told us how he left MHS mid-season and he was with Gil at Rosemead helping out I thought he should be ashamed of himself. Lets see how all these tempers get along on the field. I'm not doubting their coaching abilities but I am defiently wondering their commitment. Good luck to all kids but Warren HS better win.

Dont think Highly of Jimenez said:

Iv heard good things about Jimenez's Coaching ability while he was at St Paul. But, my opinion on his character was changed last year. I was on the sidelines of last years Hall of Fame game, in which he was coaching when I saw him suddendly point at the others sides reciever, who was standing 10ft away and in a loud rude tone told his players, "Thats him, that the guy we are going to cover and knock the sh*t out of all game". When the player looked at Coach Jimenez, Jimenez replied, "Ya you". No class or sportsmanship, what kinda of Coach talks to kids that way and teaches players to talk that way, seriously? Im glad It wasnt my kid he was talking to, good luck Warren Players and Parents. Oh by the way, the player he was talking smack to scored a touchdown in the End Zone over one of his former St Paul corner backs...SWEET JUSTICE!

been to the playoffs. They better win cif, or the city of downey will have their head. Your right.. the grass isn't always greener, ask Gil Jimenez.

Coach Jimenez?

People get your facts straight! Coach Jimenez is one one the great football minds of the area. No doubt. But can you question his loyalty? Yes you can. He is good at what he does but can he do it on his own and not headhunt all those bozo's at Montebello? I don't think so. The word is out. It just goes to show you that those SP people fall from the same tree. It's to bad because the first time that they have any kind of drama Jimenez will try to pull rank. Seen it a million times. Guys like Andy Guerrero will run like a little girl as he did last year. Quitting week 8 and leaving the kids high and dry. These are the kinds of people that he's hiring. I was not a big fan of Gonzalez but I did at least respect the fact he kept his poise and didn't get rattled like the way Jimenez did. How do you live with yourself by acting like a moronic jerk with kids?
These are facts because I coached at SP for many years with Jimenez. I never was a person to argue but sometimes the screaming and yelling get to you. Jimenez needs to remember that these are just kids trying their very best. Sometimes you need to put everything else before yourself and be a man and not a screaming brat. Either way, good luck to Coach.Jimenez.

My favorites, "develipt & fundmentils"

I hope you didn't develipt fundmentils for your son

Lets get the facts straight. When Gil left St Paul he went to Wilson High School in Hacienda Heights for a year and quit to become the Head coach and Glenn after 1 Yr of Head coach he Quit and returned to St Paul and coached for three yrs with Pete. After Pete and crew left St Paul He went to Rosemead to coach Football and was currently the Head Basketball coach and has now Quit both of those jobs after only 1 yr to become football coach at Warren. You are right great example of dedication. So in the last 8yrs he has coached at 5 different high school 2x's at St Paul. He has never coached a second yr as a head coach in either football or basketball? I know people have helped him get jobs back to St Paul and Rosemead as a teacher only to leave? He is a good coach just question his loyalty?Good luck Warren.

ex Cal Parent/under the "man" Ancich said:

Cal has lost some coaches. Zamora to Los Altos and I herd they lost two or three more. Even a couple more from the varsity. Nobody with resposiblity though.

Interesting to see. No Jones, the Kicker, and those two or three big linemen. All started there freshman year in Ancichs program with his coaches he brought in. Good yong coaches and it showed the kids freshman year. They develipt the players by teaching fundmentils early there freshman year and it wasnt only the fundmentils but my son and all the players loved them becase they made football fun. They was great and they remained great with the new coach when the they made the mistake of running ancich out even though we parents made it clear to theadmiinistraation we wanted him to stay.

Arnold definitly got plenty of talen to begin with. Now let see what he has develpt over his first three years. you cant make excuses and say ther is no talint. Calhi has always had talint just look back over the years with alot of diferent coaches. and even under Pitraceo wen they almost beat Los altos and the guy befor Pitraceo. It is the varsity coches job to develip it. Isnt it.

Rosemead had issues this season. A number of players quit the team midway thru league. Conrado Simpson and a couple of linemen. The best player Diaz was unhappy and neither he, nor Simpson played basketball this past season. And Diaz is no longer at Rosemead, he checked out and is now at Arroyo. But everyone I spoke with, including the guys mentioned above thought Jimenez was an excellent coach.

That said I think he can be an overbearing ego-maniac. Very little was ever directed at opponents, but the message was always clear. Yelling at his players before games within earshot of the other coaches/teams. "If we lose to these %$#&%*#@ then I will ^%$%#@#$ kill myself. They are a joke." Obviously I am paraphrasing but you get the idea. I get the impression that he is a lot like the opposing player that you can't stand to play against, but you'd love to have on your roster. Good luck coach.

Gil has only been to three schools in the last 15 years. St.Paul, Glen, St.Paul, Rosemead and now Warren. The only thing Gil promised the Warren Admin is that he will commit to takinng the football program to the next level (WINNING A CIF CHAMPIONSHIP).
The previous coach did a good JOB. Now you say he is stealing coaches from other established programs, well what programs are you talking about. I know for a fact two coaches will be recieving teaching positions. Gil`s coaching staff were more than willing to help him because he is a stand up guy and will listen to their imput regasrding what`s best for the program, along with treat them with respect. There will be ten assistant coaches, Warren has never had that many coaches ever.

Now if that`s not reason enough to give him a try, than go ahead and take your son else were. Remember the grass is not always greener somewhere else.
