California Takes it Again
You've gotta give it to coach Tony Nieto and the California High School baseball team. For the second year in a row, the Condors are Del Rio League champions after a thrilling 3-2 win on Wednesday afternoon at La Serna.

There were so many big-time efforts led by sophomore Nathan Blount.

The youngster allowed two runs on four hits in six strong innings to pick up the win.
What about Jacob Poore's go-ahead solo homer in the seventh or Fernando Pinedo's light's out bottom of the seventh. Sophomore Michael Esparza had a clutch double in the fifth.
It was a great effort all around.
While La Serna played well and almost stole a win in the sixth thanks to a two-run double from Aaron Ashton, I'm baffled by co-coach Anthony Gonzales Jr. and Andy George's move not to insert ace Connor Burke into the game.
I have the utmost respect for both but I strongly disagree with not pitching Burke at all in the championship game.
Gentlemen, how could you lose with your best horse still in the stable?
I can't understand why Burke wasn't brought into the game in the seventh to face California's 2-3-4 hitters. Your team received a great effort from spot starter Derrick Davies. You just tied the game. The last thing you want to do is give momentum back to California.
A manager or pitching coach often tells his pitcher that if he's going to get beat, he might as well get beat with his best pitch. Doesn't that philosophy apply to pitchers? If you're going to be beat, don't you at least want it to happen with your best guy on the bump?

Statistics say Calhi has the best coaching staff in the league. Look at the last four seasons. two seconds and make the cif quarterfinals which is the same as the semi finals in football, (because baseball playoffs are 32 team tournaments and football only 16), then they win two league championships in a row. Hopefully they will get out of the first round this year after losing a close one last year.
Very consistent program.
Could be Manzo karma heading Gonzo's way...what goes around does come around.
Double G's (co-coaches?) didn't look good on that day. Best of Luck in the playoffs to all the area teams.
Definitely have to agree with your sentiments about the Lancers coaching decision.
Davies pitched a great game, but when you are in a must win game, you need to go with your best to get you over the hump.
There were plenty of coaching mistakes on the part of La Serna. Lack of small ball when down 1 run early in the game, baserunning mistakes, and eventually the pitching mishandling.
Usually one run losses are put on the coaches shoulders and the game yesterday was an example of that.
Great job by Cal Hi! Back to back!
Good luck to both teams in CIF.
mr campa, dont you know that papa burke runs the show at la serna.
no way would his son go in when the games on the line and have a chance of maybe losing. not good for the stats or ego
Nieto has always gotten the most from his teams. Say what you want about his annoying attempts to get in players (totally bush league!) and umpires heads, but the guy is a smart coach. Can anyone say that about Gonzales or George?
I completely agree. Burke should have been inserted. Gonzo and George blew an opportunity to keep it close. They must have known that the bottom of their line-up was due up in the bottom of the 7th (all 3 of which didn't do any damage with the bats). They knew that Pinedo was getting ready to come in. Davies was getting hit hard the entire game (many outs where balls that where hit hard right at someone). Instead of making the move they leave Davies in (he was overthrowing in his 7th inning warm up pitches. probably from being pumped up that they just tied the game). The first pitch Poore sees is, you guessed it, a fastball that has a lil more life on it but right down broadway and Poore absolutely lasers it over the left field fence. That ball got out of there in a hurry. Bottom line is that Gonzo got OUTCOACHED by Nieto. The LS coaches got a little over excited from tying the game. They tensed up and didnt pull the trigger. Congrats to coach Nieto on back to back league championships.
