St. Paul Pulls off the Upset
I received a call this morning from my distinguished colleague, San Gabriel Valley Tribune Editor Fred Robledo, going on and on about his favorite team, Bishop Amat High School, and about how it was playing for a national championship and was going to beat up St. Paul and blah blah blah blah blah.
Then St. Paul goes out and stuns the Lancers, 3-2. While I usually don't take sides, great job men.

Remember, Amat entered this game with a 37-game Del Rey League winning streak and was ranked No. 2 in the nation according to Baseball America. Had the Lancers won and ran the table in the postseason, then they would have had a chance for a national title (for whatever that's worth).

So, kudos to coach Casey Morales, who's been looking for this elusive win since the 2008 CIF-SS Division 4 title game. Kudos to Gabe Encinas, who got the win and ended a couple of year's worth of frustration. Lastly, kudos to the St. Paul bats, who finally got to Amat hurler Paul Paez, who was beginning to look more and more like Cy Young with each game.
Great job guys. Where are the St. Paul haters now?

Nice!! Great Ifo. Great People. Great Blog. Thank you for all the great sharing that is being done here.
All this time thinking they were a great team for the last 4 years, was all BS.I watched them play bisop and St paul rivalry. Thinking how could BA beat St Paul 4 years Straight, there is no way, especially when you have a pitcher like Encinas on the mound. Encinas who dominates at many show cases and area code games with better players up against him and to have these Ba players not even close to that talent step up and cheat is wrong. If BA needs A rolled bat To beat Encinas then it tells you what kind of program they are running. officials need to open up there eyes, lakewood and every team that have lost to Ba to investigate. When ever BA needed something big that blue bat came out of somebodys bag maybe nietos.it is sad to see that in high school baseball just to win.If Bisop Amat loses in the playoffs, then you know why. no more blue bat. Good Luck Nieto Cheaters never win.
La Serna, my real point was about baseball. Mentioning football was an aside. BA has been highly successful in baseball for quite awhile and should be playing in a higher division. They also have considerably more students than some of the other schools in the league. Also to Cal Hi. SP beat Mater Dei and La Mirada, so it hasn't been luck. SP has good pitching (not just Encinas), good D and timely hitting and a never say die attitude. After losing to Amat twice they could've folded and quit, but they didn't. By the way, the softball team also beat BA, depriving them a share of league championship with St. Joseph. Good luck to all the local teams in the playoffs.
So what that the Bishop Amat players and parents cried after the outcome of the game. They felt bad inside as anyone would. Losses are bound to happen. They diplayed good sportsmanship after the game because of the respect they have for St. Paul. Bishop Amat has a quality baseball program, a great coaching staff, are blessed with an abundance of baseball talent, and have played well for a number of years as judged by their national ranking. Wednesday's game was a well-played game and St. Paul came out on the winning end. The St. Paul coaching staff and players performed in an excellent fashion and deserve a lot of credit. We should all feel grateful that the boys on both teams are getting a good high school education and can compete in the sport they love and at the high level they perform. Let us all reflect within ourselves and find something good in this long time and non-bitter rivalry.
Once a swordsman, because amat is not that good even in football, to move up in baseball, no. They have won one football playoff game in five years and against mater dei a private school. If you recruit in your area and they amat recruit outside the area and still don’t win. The last 6 years amat made the playoff twice, the last time amat was good in football was 1995 and in that year they did not have a lot of players go to the next level because of football.
ok
swordsmen you got lucky
Hardball Fan,
Really!!! We have some kids coming trust me.
Amat has a great baseball program. They get the best players in their end of the Valley. They play D1 football. Why are they NOT playing D1 baseball instead of D4. It's past time for them to do so. Are they afraid to move up, where they should be. Great win SP. Five more games.
Yes everyone know's that Casey Morales was talking to the official before the game about a bat in BA ammunition. i believe it was the BLUE EASTON he was talking about. I've been watching BA and SP very closely this pst years. Always go to the game that seems better to watch that week. To me it seems no offence BA but that bat he cried about was a good call. Mondays game between SP and BA #6 i think his name is Zabala hit a bomb that was easily 520 plus feet. That was a blast. In my eyes that kid doesn't have that kind of power. There is no way. Then i started putting two and two together. I watched the South Hills vs Amat game. Rio was using a Voodoo the whole game until amat needed something big to happen for them to win. All of a sudden he breaks out the BLUE EASTON and hits a jack to win the game. I don't want to say it but if BA needs rolled bats to win. I'm going to lose all respect for them. Wed. game without that the BLUE BEAST in the BA players hands, they didn't do anything. Hopefully the rumors aren't true about the shaved bats because that would be an all time low for BA and people would lose all respect for them as well.
what a joke st.paul is going to win this years cif championship and it started off by knocking of amat i hope they make it to the chamionship so st.paul can rub in there faces celebrating a cif chapionship go st.paul!!
Way to finally get the monkey off your backs, Swordsmen! BA is a great program with a smart coach, and they benefit from a really strong travel ball presence in the SGV. But, with Gabe Encinas on the mound, any time his team wins it is hardly an "upset." The kid is one of the best HS pitchers in California and is capable of shutting down any HS team on his day. And SP does have quite a few good players at this time. Difference between BA and SP? When the current seniors at BA move on, they will continue to be a strong regional program; after Encinas, Chico, Oddo, Willson, etc. leave.....good luck with that, Casey...
Amat players were in tears......parents were in tears....but now they want to say the National Title was no big deal!! LMAO. Swordsmen outplayed amat AND were simply the better team yesterday and Gabe E was the better pitcher yesterday. Amat had a chance for an undefeated league but St Paul seniors kicked their butts and sent them back to Bassett in tears! GO SWORDSMEN! Great win Coach Morales!
It's really tough reading some of these blogs, most of all for ALL our boys. We are the adults and if we are asking them to be their best than we need to ask the same of ourselves. Yeah, one can say in the name of competitive sports, but where do YOU draw the line. Yes, and I'm sure folks will say it's a big tough world out there and these comments are what make a man. Really... How about honor, respect, dignity and character. I've never posted a blog but feel the need to do it now, so, it's gonna be a long one.
First and foremost, let's thank God for an injury free game for all our boys. Yes they are all our boys. These young men are our future leaders. Don't we want them to continue to grow and be Faith Filled Leaders? Boys, keep playing, twice as hard, and enjoy, twice as much, for the youth that cannot because of disabilites or illness. Enjoy and thank God FIRST, for your ability to play a sport you love!!
AMAT players, kudos to you for all your success. Paez, you are an awesome pitcher and we have had our challenges against you, it's been tough, no doubt! You have a great team backing you up and you should all be proud.
Although there has been a rivalry for years and will continue to be, there is a difference between being competitive and continuing to fuel a "bitter" rivalry. Whatever school you are a fan of, maybe, just for a split second, and even if it's just a little, you can congratulate and be happy for these young men from ST. PAUL, especially our seniors who have battled against AMAT since freshman year. You don't have to remind them of the Ws or the Ls, they have lived it!!! It was a GREAT win for them and ST. PAUL! Way to go Gabe! You played an AWESOME game and your team backed you up. It was a great way to end the league season! Whether Lancer or Swordsmen, we got in common how we hate to lose to each other. But, maybe this time, you can put yourself in their shoes and feel what they were feeling, if just for a moment. Again, when our kids succeed, whether they are Swordsmen, Lancers, Condors, Dons, Monarchs, Friars, it is a memorable moment, FOR THEM and WE should be happy for THEM.
Playoffs are next and for all these young men, stay strong and healthy. We are looking forward to some great baseball!! God Bless all our kids! For those of you graduating and beginning the next chapter in your life, remember, Keep the Faith, Respect, Honor, Dignity and Character. No matter how many games you win if you don't have these, you limit yourself and what it is to be a true champion! You have the ability to make a difference, so be all you can and remember to always be the best YOU God has called you to be!
Great Job St. Paul, even if it was the first win in 4 years! When you're going up against a team like Amat and beating them, it tends to be somewhat unbelievable. It was a great accomplishment. There will always be people putting St. Paul down but yesterday's game proved that we can compete. Amat has an outstanding group of ball players and I wish them the best of luck during CIF playoffs. Congratulations to the St. Paul softball team for beating Amat as well. Keep it up Swordsmen!
St. Paul makes it seem like they've won the CIF championship. They won a league game. oooo...woooow...big frikn' deal! Can't wait to come in here and rub it in when St. Paul gets bounced from the playoffs. Remember, You can't pitch Encinas all the games.
Wow coming here calling St Paul slime, you sound like a hater yourself. What should we call you guys after losing, throwing their gloves around in the dugout, crying. Is this what you teach your kids, if you don't win to whine and cry. Amat has a hell of a team, no one doubts that, but St Paul played a good game and won... end of story....... Sounds like you are a bit upset... Good... Deal with it
You make it seem as if Amat cares about National title. One win in 4 years right I said one in 4 years. Really should be just happpy. Do not celebrate as if was league title or CIF champs right you have not won one yet. (slime). Will not happen. Second place is good for the slime. Way to coach Morales we saw crying to the official before the game about bats. Lets not start and what goes on in the trailer. You know what we are talking about. As for St. Paul this is your game of your life now pack it up it is time for the real season.
Congratulations to St Paul on a big win yesterday . Great pitching by both AMAT and St Paul . Sorry to burst your bubble anonymous but the dream is a CIF Championship not a ranking nor a mythical National Title . That kind of stuff is just icing on the cake if and I say if we win a CIF title.Anonymous are you a St Paul backer or just another hater who has to get their daily fix of hate on AMAT by posting bs on AMAT .
Beat the Dogs,,,,oppps, I mean the Lancers! Great win St Paul.......no National Title for Amat, just a league loss and broken dreams!
