June 2010 Archives
A few weeks back, the paper ran a small report about the death of a 20-year-old Whittier resident on the 91 Freeway. The person killed was former Condor football player Quinn Luckett.
Over the last two weeks, the California boosters have been putting together an effort to best remember Luckett by establishing a memorial scholarship.
The La Habra and Cantwell Sacred Heart football teams are taking part in a few passing tournaments this week.
There are certain bloggers who just sap any fun out of blogging. And you guys know exactly who you are.
Today's print edition includes this year's Daily News track and field Players and Coaches of the Year along with the first and second teams.
I know there are a few of you dying for some St. Paul info. Thankfully, coach Marijon Ancich obliged and announced his coaching staff.
I know there were some people here who were interested in the coaching changes for Montebello football.
Today's print edition includes this year's Daily News softball Player and Coach of the Year along with the first and second teams and an honorable mention list.
In what has to be one of the more commonly used sports phrases, Cantwell Sacred Heart athletic director Omar Villalta confirmed the Cardinals are "going in a different direction" with the baseball program.
That means second-year coach Eric Reta is out and the position is open to suitors.
It's time to talk a little El Rancho football. With the paper today is Dons head coach Rick Zepeda, who is embarking on his third go-around with Blue Pride.
I apologize for being too quiet on the all-area release dates. The dates have changed about three times now but I believe they're secure.
While going through the selection process for all area baseball, I compiled several offensive stats and posted them here. It's interesting to see who led each category.

There have a been a few developments over the last few weeks.
Since we don't have a Division 1 high school football team in the area, the measuring stick for several area fans has been their team's ability to compete with D-1 schools.
Do you remember those old Wheaties commercials from the 80's up until the early part of this decade that used to tout that old familiar phrase "part of a balanced breakfast?"
Well, that's kind of what this blog is.
I know it's been about a month since I did the last "Your Questions" segment, so let's get started on your questions. If you have any questions, this is the place to do them.
One of the area's formerly premier baseball names is available as one-time St. Paul coach Patrick Fitzsimons recently resigned from Villa Park High, according to the OC Register.
I've been a bit surprised with the growing animosity between La Habra and La Mirada High School football fans, parents and even a few a coaches.
The rumors are true again. Schurr High School athletic director Tom Thompson confirmed the Spartans have hired Adam Millan as their new baseball coach, replacing Ken Marrero.
La Mirada High School athletic director Kim Brooks confirmed openings at head coach in two of the school's premiere sports - boys basketball and girls soccer.
As a few days have passed since the Major League baseball draft, the four locals who were drafted - St. Paul's Gabe Encinas, La Mirada's Daniel Poncedeleon and Adam Gaylord and Sonora's Garret Levsen - all have big decisions to make.
A couple of coaching changes have recently been made while another rumor was denied at Santa Fe, St. Paul and Whittier Christian high schools.
UCLA men's basketball assistant Jason Ludwig is hosting his annual JL Hoops local skills camp on Saturday at Norwalk High School.
The camp runs from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and costs $25.
Registration can be done online at www.jlhoops.com.
Two more local players were drafted as the Major League baseball draft wrapped up today.
Whittier resident Garret Levsen and La Mirada alumnus Adam Gaylord were the last two locals to receive calls.
With the New York Yankees selecting Gabe Encinas, the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays countered with their own right-hander, selecting La Mirada senior Daniel Poncedeleon with the 731st pick, which happened to be in the 24th round.
Start spreading the news...St. Paul High School senior Gabriel Encinas was just selected with the last pick of the sixth round (#205) of the Major League Baseball Amateur a few minutes ago by the New York Yankees.
A couple of local softballers, La Habra's Kayla Klein and Whittier Christian's Amanda Perez, recently announced their verbal commitments to four-year universities.
The Major League Baseball Amateur Draft gets underway this afternoon with the first round and supplemental picks going today.
A St. Paul official confirmed that principle Lori Barr is out and has been replaced by activities director Kate Aceves, a St. Paul alumnus.
The East all-stars, once down by 12 points, outscored the West 25-7 en route to a 25-19 win in the 43rd annual 605 All-Star Football Classic on Saturday at Cerritos College.
Many of the area football seniors are suiting up for the final time in today's 605 All-Star Football Classic at Cerritos College at 6:05 p.m.
In case anyone missed it, the Whittier Christian High School Softball team captured its third divisional title in six years by virtue of a 4-0 win over South Hills in Friday afternoon's CIF-Southern Section Division 5 championship game at Deanna Manning Stadium.
The area's final team looks to win its second straight divisional championship and third in school history as No. 1-seeded Whittier Christian takes on South Hills today at Irvine's Deanna Manning Stadium at 5:15 p.m. for the CIF-Southern Section Division 5 softball Final.
For the second year in a row, the area's lone championship representative is the Whittier Christian High School softball team.
