Against Division 1 Teams...
Since we don't have a Division 1 high school football team in the area, the measuring stick for several area fans has been their team's ability to compete with D-1 schools.
I decided to look up the numbers since 2001, the last year we had a Division 1 team (St. Paul), and see how our schools have fared against D-1 competition.
Here are the records -
St. Paul: 3-21-2 (wins over L.B. Wilson [2001, 2004] & Alemany [2001])
La Mirada: 2-2 (wins over L.B. Cabrillo [2003] & L.B. Jordan [2006])
Santa Fe: 2-4 (wins over Fountain Valley [2005] & San Clemente [2009])
La Habra: 1-7 (win over San Clemente [2009])
California: 0-1
La Serna: 0-1
Cantwell: 0-2
and winning percentages -
La Mirada: .500
Santa Fe: .333
St. Paul: .173
La Habra: .125
So, what do we have to learn from the numbers?
The first thing that jumps out is the number of Division 1 teams St. Paul has faced this past decade.
The Swordsmen have played 26 D-1 teams, that's more than the rest of the area combined (22 games). St. Paul definitely deserves respect for putting together a formidable schedule year after year.
However, perhaps the record validates the Swordsmens' move from Division 1 to Division 3 before the start of the 2002 season.
I know there are fans who believe St. Paul should be in Division 1. However, the numbers just don't support that claim. St. Paul also hasn't beaten a D-1 team since 2004.
The team with the actual best winning percentage is La Mirada, who is 2-2. In fact, outside of the 2008 loss to Division 1 runner-up Tesoro (57-21), the Matadores were competitive in their other three games.
How big were last year's wins for Santa Fe and La Habra?
The Highlanders would still like to get over the hump versus Los Al but that 29-28 win over San Clemente is definitely a positive step for the program.
As for Santa Fe, the win only makes me wonder how good the Chiefs would have been with a healthy Alex Flores.

I am not in truth sure if greatest tactics include emerged nearly stuff similar to that, except I am certain that your huge job is obviously identified. I was questioning if you offer any registration toward your RSS feeds as I would be extremely interested.

Ok what are both you guys blathering about rather. The topic is about football teams playing against the Pac-5 division. What does that have to do with pitchers transfering to other schools?
"What? said"
Yes I comprehend. My comment on Encinas was a reply to "SGV Guy" who commented on St. Paul beating Amat with a transfer from SFHS.
He must have been talking about Encinas, and I replied the move from Santa Fe to St. Paul to play under Morales was a great move. Santa Fe under Hendry was miserable considering the talent they have.
This year the new coaches led the team to a second place, and Santa Fe had not done that for years under Hendry. The only success Hendry had is when Kotsay was on the team. 1993 or so.
Now who is not comprehending?
coach A was well cook years ago, coach Avina and Munoz who kid attends SFHS.
SP will not do anything with Coach A at the helm. Realistically he "WAS" a great coach but time has passed him by and the game has become way to complicated for his 36 power brain. Please Marijon retire and let someone come in with a true staff and lead us back to a competitive program. Lord Help Us....
WOW…….sad to see the change in Jack Mahlstede now that he is on a 2 year program. Ahhh, the things grandparents do for their grandchildren!! That’s right Chief fans, rumor has it once the golden child graduates Jack is all done!!! Now you get to hear words like cuts, drop him and who gives a crap.
Sorry AMAT 73, you are right Good Luck St Paul. I think it is time for other schools to beat you. Maybe you can try 8 man football. And for SFO Encinas was on the Fr. league champs football team at SFHS, as their QB not just from the SF area.
Hey we could have won in 92 and 93 but for some reason the team couldnt get it done in those years.
get over it.,,,,,,,,pioneer is going to win it anyway!
Dan,
One thing about the SGV .We may battle the hell out of each other but we stick together when one of us is challenged by outsiders. Even I refrained from using the term slime because in reality it is sad that a once solid program has gone down so far. The one thing I will never understand is turning down the game with AMAT .I know that no matter how low we were to fall, and you know we have been down we would never pass on the opportunity to kick some st paul azz.
What is Sports Fan Original blathering about? Talk about not being able to read and comprehend subject matter.
When did Mahlstede take Santa fe to the finals other then in 2006. I remember semi-finals quite often. I remember before 2006 Whittier was the last team from that league to go to the finals in 1993 it was a thirteen year drought. Did Mahlstede take santa fe to the finals before that?
Amat 73,
I see that Lancers don't wast any chances to jump on the Swordsmen [I won't call them slime cause that's an Amat rite of passage]. Thanks for the compliments, although to be honest the first game against your Lancers was more embarrassing than great, I realize you were being generous, so much appreciated.
SP,
I see that you get outside your Whittier blog every so often good for you. Your right, ST. Paul has more titles than WC, I'm well aware of your history. Now feel free to intervene but the one time the two schools met was in 1976, it was the third round of the Big 5 playoffs in an era when both programs were at their strongest, St. Paul was a heavy favorite to win CIF that year and was high up in the national rankings at the time. West Covina won that game 17 to 14, so that means that while St. Paul may have a little bit more history, West Co has scoreboard over St. Paul.
That year West Co also beat Loyola in the second round and Eisenhower in the first round. They lost by a last second turnover in the semifinal round to the eventual back to back CIF champion Los Altos who beat Fontana 27 to 0 in the Title game. The funny thing is that West Co had beaten both Los Altos and Fontana earlier that season and beat Los Altos in league for 4 or 5 years in a row during the Conquerers title days, WC was league Champs more than once of what was probably the toughest league in the state at the time. In 1975 WC also beat an undefeated [10 & 0] national top 5 ranked Huntington Beach Edison in the 75 playoffs, only to loose a tough fought third round game to Eventual National champion Loyola.
WC may only have a couple of Lower Div. titles but back when both schools were in their prime [60's and 70's] they could play and beat anybody as they proved on the field with the Swordsmen and many others, and today they can still play with the Swordsmen. One other thing, St Paul was one of the schools that West Co called during this offseason but St. Pauls scheduling didn't work out. Its a shame cause it would have been a great game.
Now that I've enlightened you a little how is that for some history.
WHAT, do you ever buy a football program?...
chiefs - learn your own school history. how many times has Mahlstede been to the finals and blew it? Couldn't have been too many times considering i know they have only been there once since i've been around. Which is since around 1988 or so. So he couldn't have blown it anymore then one time and the one time they went they were hardly considered favorites they actually lost to cal hi in league that year but the win was forfeited. How does one time equal more then any coach in history?
I guess you dont have 5$ to spend?
SP DAD said:.....what.... for the love of God and Mother Mary why would you send your God given blood offspring to a school in total shenanigans and is scandalous at best with Barr the principal now gone. Let’s let anyone school our kids, that is what SP is saying, wow.
SGV Guy....Everyone knows I am not a St. Paul fan, but they beat Amat with that guy from Santa Fe's area (Encinas).
I have a lot of respect for the Encinas family....taking him away from a stagnant program directed by leadership that seldom coached his players to play to their potential.
For example (just one): A freshmen team, not too far back (5 or 6 years) wins league going 15 and 0 (I am pretty darn sure). As seniors they go 6 and 9.
Santa Fe has talent. I enjoyed the year they had this year. They needed a change. Hendry did nothing since his first or second year, with Kotsay and that other pro player, reaching the Quarterfinals. Since then...have they even won a first round game?
I know he won a couple "Wild Card" games, but that is just to get into the "real" tournament of 32 teams!
So Dan how many div. 1 CIF Championships, State titles, your WC have won? Hasn’t the bulldog come more than short in winning in a division that is almost to the bottom? This year your school (coach) claims the strongest team in school history, you will lose early. You know what as long as your schools goes history; in football you have no history!!!!!!
Yes SP go ahead and fire away. We have a few kids who go both ways and so did WC when they came calling us for a game but I guess it's not in this new breed of swordsmen to go both ways when needed . Not much you can say to Dan because WC unlike sp took us head on and gave us a couple of great games. Don't forget sp when you guys feel you are up to it we will still be waiting for you . From what I have been reading things must be real bad at sp when you can't even get up for a game against AMAT. I mean come on the hated LANCERS and you guys have no fire or desire to have at us . That is one sad piece of news and a sad day to be a swordsman. sp I'll bet you one thing about WC , if AMAT would have called them to have at it 2 more times the answer would been a loud WHERE AND WHEN . By the way sp, who do you consider your rivals now.
chiefs - learn your own school history. how many times has Mahlstede been to the finals and blew it? Couldn't have been too many times considering i know they have only been there once since i've been around. Which is since around 1988 or so. So he couldn't have blown it anymore then one time and the one time they went they were hardly considered favorites they actually lost to cal hi in league that year but the win was forfeited. How does one time equal more then any coach in history?
SP,
I follow West Covina, go ahead and fire away.
Santa Fe Head Coach retired; that would be great, he's been in the finals more than any coach in HS football histroy and has come up short ever time. Maybe we can win one, and not have to deal with his family and friends. All the talent and no rings!!!!!!
Dan who is your team, you know what I mean? Are they better than SP, I’ll bet not! And to you “high school sports fan, Are we SP as you said, “simple- you guys chickened out-its pretty sad when you back out of a game against your rivals” , will your school play us? I have the answer “no” because their chicken.
That tied El Rancho game in the Colesium with SP, both Offensive lines bedded down in Pico that night, all Pico boys.
Check enroll area of SFHS. They get kids from SF, Whittier, Norwalk, and small area of Downey. I remember coaches from SGV always saying well coached teams at SFHS, We will miss Slime Paul! Nice job on beating Amat this year with a pitcher that transferred from SFHS.
SP, Whats there to learn?
Seen plenty of Swordsmen football, but from back when they could play with the big boys, which they haven't been able to do in a long time. Seen them from the days of Martin Medina when they tied El Rancho in the Colesium, on thru Ricky Velenzuela to Chuck Willig and their Title loss to Los Altos in 77 and on thru to their championship team in 81. I may go down and catch an SP game every couple of years but the only thing to learn from watching St.Paul today is the vast difference in caliber between those teams and today's St. Paul teams, God bless their effort, the kids play hard, but your not even close to the St. Paul of old.
to SP DAD- you guys called and cancelled the Amat gane cause you didnt want to play them-plain and simple- you guys chickened out-its pretty sad when you back out of a game against your rivals- why is it when SP is good you guys want to brag about how great your program is but when you lose and back out of games against good teams you come up with plenty of excuses?? and you mentioned recruiting well i guess you guys arent even good at cheating anymore.
sp,
What could anybody possibly learn from slime football other than to turn tail and run when the phone rings for a game.
SP Dad, why is enrollment down and has been going for 9 to 10 years now?
dan, you got one thing right in your ramblings,.....your quote...But your right I don't know much about Highschool football.... end quote.
PS watch Swordsmen football and learn!
SP would continue to be in Div 1 if the enrollment wasn't so low. In order for any school to compete in Div 1 you have to have the man power, and you have to do a good job of recruiting. That's what it comes down to. LH coach has scheduled some D1 teams this year because he knows he has the man power to compete with those teams. Amat isn't on our schedule this year. But, not because we didn't want to play them. We kept it real. We just don't have the man power this year. Kids will have to go both ways all game long and those aren't teams you can do that with.
Rod SP.
Your a swordsmen fan and your crying about Santa Fe
getting players from out of area! Real funny, I never realized St. Paul was doing it with pure home grown talent all these years. With your vast knowledge of highschool football I'd thought you would of known that out of district players are pretty common these days. Remember Aubrey Haynes? You know that runningback that transfered after his junior year from Diamond Ranch to help bring you guys a title in 2007, I hope your team at least sent Roddy Layton a thank you letter. I'm not a Santa Fe Chiefs fan by any means but even you as a SP fan have to admit that their Pac Five wins since 2001 are better than any others on that list. But your right I don't know much about Highschool football.
Wow LM and LBPoly, "wow"... that has to be an oxymoron, ever said in high school football or in any sport or classroom against Poly. best school in a 100 years. WOW!!!!!!
Go back one more and in 2000 La Mirada beat a very good Fountain Valley! That same FV team that played LB Poly in the Playoffs and came up a little bit short! Also LB Poly and La Mirada are tied for most consecutive playoff appearances. LM has so much tradition just a few bad years. But I will say this we have some great teams in our area! La Habra pulled them selves out of the gutter and well SP is SP! Should be a great year for HS football!
Dan what do you know? I'll bet you nothing about high school football. how many kids does SF recieved from norwalk? and still cant win.
well, Big Chief said:,
your school is still know as the Buffalo Bills of high school football. so who cares who you play, you wont win.
I would have to say that Santa Fe has done the best on this list. San Clemente and Fountain Valley are the more legitimate Pac 5 football programs of this list, more impressive than beating L.B. Wilson, or Cabrillo
L.B.Jordan, What make it more impressive is that Santa Fe dominated those games[34 to 0 against Fountain Valley in 05, and 34 to 21 vs San Clemente last year.].
Its puzzeling that they have these great wins during the season and then loose to lesser teams in the playoffs. Do they loose players to grades come playoff time? injuries?
big change this football season!!!!! WATCH OUT!
I know SF played two very close games in those 4 loses. One was a 17-14 loss to FV and the other was a 13-6 loss to a very tough Edison team. And if memory serves me correct SF was driving late in the game and had just crossed midfield before a fumble crashed their dreams of victory. That game I'd have to say took Edison by surprise. I would like to believe Alex Flores would have made a difference for SF last year because he sure did against San Clemente but the reality of it was that he got hurt in a game that had no business being so close. And before you La Serna fans start popping off just about how good your team was please remember that they turned around and got beat by Pio "freaken" neer. A team that got dominated by SF without Flores.
Re Santa Fe Coach.
Jack Mahlstede was coaching the Santa Fe team back when I played against them from the old Whitmont League between 69 and 72. To illustrate HOW long ago that was, RETIRED La Serna Coach Kenny Lavigne was his center.
And Dick Nixon, another Whittier boy, was in the White House.
Mahlstede is a legend, not only in the SE LA County but adjacent areas too. He seems to have scheduled a barn burner of a preseason too: Warren, Bonita, Esperanza, Charter Oak, and Downey,
Keep stroking Jack.
La Mirada 15, St. Paul 7
St. John Bosco 35, St. Paul 0
Bishop Amat 38, St. Paul 6
Crespi 63, St. Paul 14
St. Francis 34, St. Paul 7
Chaminade 53, St. Paul 28
Alemany 44, St. Paul 14
last year, may have to re-think SP with Amat in same league.
Hear Santa Fe Head Coach retired from Teaching is this true? I know he has a grandson playing for him, and that he is pretty good. Is he going to continue coaching at SFHS I hope so...
St. Paul should be playing in the same league is Bishop Amat- they are long time rivals and its a shame that they arent in the same league and its a real shame that St. Paul cancelled this years game against Amat- I dont care how good or bad your program is you dont cancel a game against your rival= thats like UCLA backing out of a game against USC cause they arent as good- my opinion is that St. Paul should be in a league with Amat,SJ Bosco and Loyola- the answer is to improve your program instead of chickening out against your rival.
