La Habra/La Mirada Football. What's going on?

| | Comments (50) |

I've been a bit surprised with the growing animosity between La Habra and La Mirada High School football fans, parents and even a few a coaches.

La Mirada logo.jpg

Since about January, the rhetoric between parents from both schools has grown from murmurs to shouts.

Over the last two weeks, a few angry La Habra parents have called the paper to complain about the coverage slant in favor of La Mirada.

One anonymous parent (they're almost always anonymous too) was upset the paper didn't have a write up about the La Habra Spring Game but had a notebook about La Mirada football and its recruits (nevermind the second half of that notebook talked about La Habra).

Even a La Habra coach told me La Mirada's "golden" recruits were a none story. That basically, until these players sign, they aren't Division 1 prospects.

On the La Mirada side, I've spoken to a couple of coaches that weren't pleasant when talking about La Habra - alleging the Highlanders have begun the unsavory process of recruiting players. One even said the Highlanders were the "public-school version of St. Paul."

There was a lot more from both sides but I'll leave the trash talking at that.

I was stunned at the comments, especially given both teams don't often play each other and aren't in the same division or league.

Sure the cities are neighbors but are they really rivals?

My take: I'm disappointed some La Habra backers feel the need to take shots or attempt to take down La Mirada because of its recent success. The Matadores have worked hard the last couple of years to reach their success and should be applauded, not scolded. A strong La Mirada football program only legitimizes the area and La Habra's dominance.

On the flip side, it's premature for La Mirada backers to take shots at La Habra. Let's make one issue clear. La Habra is the cream of the area and has proven that with five CIF-SS championships since 2002. I congratulate the Matadores on their success last year but remind them their one defeat was a 54-13 loss to La Habra. That isn't to say La Mirada can't take this area over. It's just going to take time.

It is interesting, though, that some of the same LM people yelling (as opposed to asking) for extra press are some of the same folks that also went mum over the firing of co-coach Ollie Lynch. I liked La Mirada's quiet composure last year, when the only noise you heard from the program was the grunts out of the weight room.

As for the talk, let's hope it settles down a bit on both sides. After all, it's not even summer yet.

Not too long ago I got this freaking amazing gaming computer, with about 6 Gigabytes of memory and it is so AWESOME! I can play the new Sims, StarCraft 2, and The Impossible Quiz and with no lagg what-so-ever. I purchased mine from HP, all for like two hundred dollars all in... pretty good deal in my opinion.

La Habra played San Clemente and Los Alamitos the past two seasons and this year will play Orange Lu, Servite, and St. John Bosco. Where are you getting your info?

anonyslime,
Come on you can do better then that . No one and I mean no gets in with 4 f's on their report card . Just because your little cow pasture of a school is in a huge slump because really who wants to go to a school built on contaminated soil anyways . Maybe you guys should take a bloggers advise and try 8 man football because you are headed there any how.

WHAT NERVE,

Let's get two things straight, Amat gives alumni scholarships to athletes so yeah the tuition gets paid but who cares where the money comes from right? Secondly, Amat is allowing anyone to get into there school due to athletic ability. I know for a fact of one incoming 8th grader that was expelled from his jr. high and is coming in with 4 F's yet he was still accepted to attend Amat. Stop looking at the situation with blinders Amat wins at all costs. No big deal but when you compare academic institutions to others your school rules in eligibility tactics.

WHAT NERVE said:

Swordsman,
I believe in those last 4 or 5 years you speak of St Paul fell to us also . What grounds do you have to even put in your 2 cents when it comes to AMAT. Everyone who attends pays and makes grades not like some school we know . Give the reasons for the downfall of your once a long , long, long time ago great program. Is it true AMAT called St Paul for a game and refused because they could not be competitive at the present time. Well when will they be ready ?

THE BEAUTY OF THE BLOG said:

See this is the beauty of the blog . People like anonymous can come on here and make such a statement as to put his foot so far down his mouth that he would be able to walk again and never come back to face his stupidity. Well anonymous I question you again , how did Amat stink up the Serra by winning the league championship last season? Also who do root for on Friday nights . Easy to talk but take a stand little man. Or should I say little boy.

Swordsmen said:

So that's what its come to?..
Amat said:
Oh yes anonymous a league championship is really stinking up the joint. And the teams we have played in the O.C. were not soft. Mater Dei, Orange Lutheran and Servite are the opposite of soft. You must be living in a cave or under a rock if you think they are soft. FACT we play the best and do it well. PERIOD. Nobody can dominate you indirectly especially when like i said we have a winning record over the top of their county the past few years.

So a one win against teams who are weak lately, now, you guys have won one playoff game in six years. And before that, amat did not make the playoffs for 4 or 5 years. Kids paying to attend your school don't play, its the recruits who play.

hey sports fan,you stated that LH does their talking on the field, yet, on other newspaper blogs your fans are saying that their game with st. john bosco will be a cakewalk. Its ok to have confidence but do not underestimate your opponent, especially a trinity league opponent. You guys are notorious for smack talking.Remember SCHURR ?

anonymous,
How did we stink up our league by being the SERRA LEAGUE CHAMPS last season. Answer that one fool. Now who's the moron idiot.

Anonymous said:

to the Amat moron. Okay you can beat up on soft OC teams, but in your own league you stink up the joint. They make you look like St. Paul. HAHAHA

sports fan original said:

Amat and others: You guys are a darn good team. I am not ignorant. I have been around noticing for decades. You guys have always been at the top except quite recently.

I can remember Division 1 CIF Championships in Baseball and Football in the 80's and I think 90's.

So do think I do not respect the hell out of your school. But when it comes to draw, you draw from a much larger area than La Habra. Those are the rules and the facts! (not St. Paul facts...I have never been a fan of theirs)

Now the fact: this years: You are talking about beating everybody, but the facts of this season are:

Amat 10 and 2: If I were a player or coach, I would not mind going 10 and 2! You are talking about "Orange County Football" right?

Well, Lakewood beat you by 17, Edison beat Lakewood by 8 or 9, and Servite beat Edison by 10! Those are the facts! So do not talk about the OC. They kicked your butts this year. Indirectly, but they went much further into the playoffs. That is when teams want to peak.

Sports Fan Original said:

Amat: Let us get one thing straight! Your recruiting territory is much bigger than La Habra

COME ON NOW said:

SFO,
You are starting to sound like all the big windbags . LH could beat you, yea right , you only say that because you know they don't have the nads to schedule Amat for a game and it will never happen. Just keep telling yourself that and beating SH is no big feat so don't try and hang your hat on that victory . At least St Paul will play us but no other team from your side will come across the hill to play any of us. And by the way we have had 2 straight years that were very good with more to come .

Amat said:

Sports fan original i have already read your nonsense on here before. You have your nose in every topic. Of course we pull athletes from all over. St. Paul does the same thing. So does every private school. You bragged about La Habra has the right to do so. What a hypocrite. Get it done more then one year? We compete against the best of the best game in and game out every year. La Habra plays good teams two or three times a year and has never defeated a team the caliber of Amat FACT. We don't even care about La Habra the comment was to the slime. And those talking about the O.C. Last time we faced Orange Luthern we won. Last time we faced Mater Dei we won. Last time we played Servite we won look it up. Cant remember the last time we lost to the SLIME St. Paul.

SAVE THE GAS said:

anonymous,
You mean teams like O Lu or Mater Dei . Anyways that post was meant for the slime not some no name wannabe like your anonymous self. Who do you rep because you surely can't rep the whole oc or are you a classic bandwagon fan.

Sports Fan Original said:

LA HABRA IS THE CREAM OF THE CROP AND I HAVE NOT NOTICED THEM DOING ANY SERIOUS TALKING. They do their talking on the field.

As for LM, I agree with Campa. I liked it last year when they just quietly won CIF.

The way La Habra beat up on La Mirada speaks for itself.

Sports Fan Original said:

Amat Talker:

You should be much better than other teams. You draw from the whole San Gabriel Valley and at times even the Whittier side of the hill!

No Brains! One very good year and Talk, Talk, Talk!

La Habra can beat you. Do it two straight years then pop-off!

Anonymous said:

had to see it for myself. Why would we go over the hill to see a real football team when we can pass the hill and go to the O.C. to catch real football.

HAD TO SEE FOR MYSELF said:

Someone mentioned to me that there was some hot air being blown around here by some slimesmen. Whenever you guys feel your program is up to it just come back over the hill and see what a real football team looks like. You know the saying every swordsman wants to grow up to be a LANCER.

Area Fan said:

Well,,, is there any report on the La Habra Blue and White game? Mr. Campa?

Anonymous said:

This is why St. Paul is the center of all of your minds. This story is about inferior teams and you are chatting it up on St.Paul

Swordsmen 4 life!

high school sports fan said:

anonymous- you mean the st. paul team that got blown out the last 6 games? the same team that called Bishop Amat and backed out of their game this year cause they werent good enough to compete? that team?? you guys are center of the universe? what a joke!

Enough Already said:

That was a good, poor attempt at trying to get everyone to jump all over St. Paul. The article is about La Habra and La Mirada. Everyone in the area hates St. Paul either because their kid isn't getting, didn't or won't get recruited or simply got denied admission so don't give them any "help". Just like over on the other side of the hill, St. Paul is hated like Bishop Amat by their neighboring public schools because kids leave their inferior programs to compete against better competition. Why is that?
With the exception of this upcoming season, NOBODY in the area other than St. Paul has had the cajones to schedule bonafide Division I schools. I respect La Habra for scheduling the three they did this upcoming season. That will be exciting to watch! I wish those boys well and hope they earn some respect! So until La Mirada starts scheduling TOUGHER schools (and we know they won't because they know they CAN'T compete) you're just a one-hit wonder as long as you keep winning Division IX championships. Can you imagine what it would be like if La Mirada scheduled La Habra's upcoming schedule? Wooo! Come on Brooks, schedule some respectful programs. La Habra's the only one you had last year. You barely beat a dreadful St. Paul squad and they're rebuilding again this year. Who else is there on your schedule who's a legitimate contender?
Oh, that's right... You just got moved up to Division VII. Let's see how you do against some different competition... Santa Fe, Cal, La Serna, Diamond Ranch, Los Altos, West Covina... Now you're moving up. But after what La Habra (Div. VI) did to that championship squad last year, one can only wonder what lies in wait for them in their new division.
But I understand, those are some proud parents over in La Mirada; rightfully so. But there's a difference between being a proud parent and an out-of-their-mind FANATIC. The parents over on the 8-man squad schools are proud of their championship squad too.
La Habra has earned the right to pound their chest. They have plenty of rings to back it up. La Mirada on the other hand, you win one DIVISION IX championship and now you're the cream of the crop and earned the right to smash on other local schools and what they've established through longevity? Let's get real.

Please...everyone knows that St. Paul is where its at. Center of the Universe. All eyes on the swordsmen. Who cares about these two nobodies? I'd rather read up on Whittier or Pioneer...better yet Cantwell.
