The St. Paul football suspension & investigation story has really blown up over the last few hours since it was reported here and on a couple of sites that head coach Marjion Ancich and the majority of his staff were suspended indefinitely while the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles is investigating allegations of hazing.

St. Paul High School Principal Kate Aceves suspended the varsity football coaching staff Thursday and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles launched an investigation Friday into an alleged hazing incident involving players at the school last weekend.
Neither school nor archdiocese officials would provide details of the incident, which occurred in the school's locker room on Aug. 14.
Aceves sent an e-mail to parents Thursday, informing them of the incident, the coaches' suspensions and of the joint investigation by the school and archdiocese.
Tod Tamberg, the archdiocese media relations director, confirmed Friday that St. Paul head coach Marijon Ancich and all but two of his assistant coaches "were put on leave" while the investigation is under way.
"The whole staff was put on leave initially," Tamberg said. "But two were reinstated after we found out that they weren't involved."
Tamberg confirmed offensive coordinator Visko Ancich, Marijon's son, was one of the two coaches who had been cleared.
"I can't comment on the specifics of the investigation," Tamberg said. "We're interviewing the coaches and players to determine precisely what happened and when."
Aceves did not return phone calls Friday.
In her e-mail to parents, she wrote: "In order to assure continuity and that our student athletes are provided with practice time and conditioning without interruption, I have asked the freshmen coaching staff to conduct varsity practices and, as needed, to coach varsity games on an interim basis.
"In the investigation, we will be working with the archdiocese and will be reviewing the entire hazing matter in accordance with our school policies which are outlined in our Parent/Student & Faculty handbooks from both a student and staff perspective."
Tamberg contends hazing incidents within the archdiocese are rare, but he said St. Paul had been warned last year.
"The football program was put on notice last year and it happened again this year," Tamberg said. "It needs to be dealt with."
Despite Aceves' e-mail to parents, Marijon Ancich said Friday he was unaware that either he or any of his coaches had been suspended.
The 33-year veteran, who once owned the state record for career wins with 347, was given a clean bill of health to coach the team on Friday afternoon by his personal physician.
Ancich said he "hoped to see all his coaches and players" at today's St. Paul blue-white football scrimmage.
"This is all internal and it's being handled by the front office," Ancich said. "I can't really verify anything or get involved."
Athletic Director Casey Morales, who is in Indiana with his family, directed all questions to Tamberg.
CIF-Southern Section Director of Sports Information Thom Simmons said the Southern Section office was unlikely to take any action.
"That's not something that we normally get involved with," Simmons said. "It's a school district issue in terms of the discipline of student-athletes."
Tamberg said there was no timeline for the investigation's completion. He did not want to discuss potential disciplinary action yet, but made it clear the archdiocese was not pleased.
"This was addressed as something that shouldn't happen again and this is the second year that this has gone on," Tamberg said. "This is the end. It's not going to happen anymore."

I definitely give credit to CBS, which unlike Fox, actually did some of its own investigating. They actually gave an alleged description of the hazing, which was a tough walnut to crack. I spoke to about a dozen people and couldn't get more than a vague description. I like how both newscasts took the same photo of Ancich from his days at Cerritos College (it's one of the few clear shots that comes up on Google). The other funny thing was the clip of St. Paul football (which looks like a Long Beach Poly clip if I'm not mistaken) on CBS 2.

Hazing has gone on for years, hum....... As you, backward SP people say, well so has every criminal activity gone on for years and hazing is a crime in California. Keep teaching your kids to be criminals as that are what you SP people desire.
It's amazing SP fans all have the same answers its ok, no big deal...it is a big deal ask the kid they kicked the crap out of lastyear I know that wasn't a hazing incident but this is what they do. SP is a joke and they are on a downward spiral students jump ship while you can. Coach A is known to always let his football players be involved with hazing. Be careful what you wish for.

its a different time and todays kids are different. i bet when you grew up boys and girls played outside played tag raced each other and competed and we taugh ourselves about winning. today kids stay inside in front of the TV play on the playstaion and when the going get tough they press reset. not going to say what happen at st.paul is good or bad because i dont know what happen. i could see if they do these type of traditions to get their players ready for the weekly battles of a football season.

They had a good coach who won the CIF within 2 years after Ancich left for Cerritos. Fired him and then brought Ancich back. I cannot believe that a player was hazzed. If you can't measure up you should not be on the field. Discipline is the name of the game in football.Ancich is a professional who has mostly student players from former team as his assistants. Football is what made SPH in the beginning.From 5-A to 3-A and they still can't win.Once Ancich get cleared I would just walk away from this school. His glory years are long gone as his player ability to play with the big boys.It is really a shame because it a symptom of the character of the individuals we have today.If you can have it your way run to momie, the government,or the principle.Look at out guys who went to Viet Nam and who did the job.If you are crying at this level God help us. 1960 GO BLUE!!!!!
