Former Coaches, Players Defend Ancich
The paper made several calls to former coaches, players, administrators and associates of Marijon Ancich on Monday to see what many of them thought about last week's suspension of the legendary coach amid hazing allegations.

What the paper found out was somewhat interesting. Most people we talked to didn't just blindly defend Ancich.
Many were quite sensible and said they weren't aware of the facts and couldn't speak about what happened.
However, most associates said they never encountered any type of hazing during their tenure with Ancich.
Salesian High coach Roddy Hiatt mentioned during his stint in the 70's it was customary for the underclassmen to perform (e.g. talent show) for the upperclassmen. One coach, current Redlands defensive coordinator Miguel Olmedo, said his experience as a freshman with the seniors positively changed his life.
This article isn't a defense of what transpired last week but rather just some reactions from some of Ancich's former allies. So please take it for what it's worth.
Maybe the most interesting note is that several of Ancich's most recent coaches or players, primarily from 2000 to present, did not want to go on record in defense or against their coach.
It's understandable from a career standpoint but kind of surprising, given Ancich gave many of these players and coaches their break.
The paper used excerpts from interviews with Vern Brock, Ed Carberry, Pat Degnan, Jim Patricio, Hiatt and Olmedo for the article.

The initial reaction was of shock and disbelief for several former players and coaches over the recent suspension of St. Paul High School football coach Marijon Ancich last week over hazing allegations.
Quartz Hill High football coach Pat Degnan, a player on St. Paul's 1972 title team, was caught off-guard.
"I received a call from my dad at 6 a.m. on Sunday that something happened," Degnan said. "Hazing is something that went out of style 20 years ago and I can't believe Marijon has anything to do with it."
Degnan said he never encountered hazing in his playing days and was emphatic Ancich neither accepted nor encouraged such actions.
"We were never hazed. There was a great respect between the seniors and younger classmen," Degnan said. "The difference now is you have this street-thug mentality with the younger kids.
"You have a senior who's been in the program for four years and is deserving of respect and a freshman who will tell him to go screw himself when he asks him to do something."
Southwestern College coach Ed Carberry was a teammate of Degnan in 1972 and Ancich's offensive line coach at Tustin High in the mid 80's.
"While I don't know enough about what happened to comment on the situation," Carberry said, "nowadays anyone can be accused of anything."
Carberry said he never saw any type of hazing at Tustin or St. Paul and described Ancich's coaching as top flight.
"I would tell him to keep doing what he's doing. He's done everything in a first-class manner," Carberry said. "No one stays in the business for 45-50 years and doesn't do things the right way."
One of Ancich's oldest associates, former La Serna athletic director Vern Brock, noted a different atmosphere.
"You just have to be aware times have changed," Brock said. "More parents are involved in all aspects of sports, the media and are a lot more law conscious."
Brock, an assistant coach at St. Paul in the mid-60's, said complaints continually rose until his retirement in 2003.
"It's increased in all sports," Brock said. "If you have just three parents complaining in each sport, you have a mess."
Salesian coach Roddy Hiatt crossed his fingers when he said he never had a hazing problem during his tenure.
Hiatt, an El Rancho graduate, was Ancich's defensive coordinator at St. Paul from 1977-79.
"We never had anything you could classify as hazing," Hiatt said. "We had the lower level kids sing a song or do a dance but that's not hazing."
However, he said players today need vigilance.
"It's the players doing their own little thing," Hiatt said. "The coaches don't condone it but they have to be on top of their players to make sure it's not happening."
Redlands defensive coordinator Miguel Olmedo, St. Paul's head coach from 1987-90 and a senior outside linebacker under Ancich in 1978, was heavily influenced by his experience at St. Paul.
"I'll never forget my freshman year in 1975 when senior quarterback Craig Johnson helped me with workouts and conditioning," Olmedo said. "Those workouts were tough and he helped me get through.
"I can still recall what he did for me and that's a reason I've dedicated my life to coaching."
One of Olmedo's coaches that freshman year was assistant coach Jim Patricio, the physical education department chair at California High.
"A lot has to do with the administration you're working with," Patricio said. "Some may sweep (hazing) under the table and some may freak out."
Patricio said he wasn't sure about the allegations but hazing varies in each school.
"Hazing goes on and some people ignore it and some people think it's wrong and ridiculous," Patricio said. "If it's something like singing a song or wearing a funny hat then it's not a big deal.
"But if there's a physical incident, then it needs to be dealt with. I have no idea what went on at St. Paul, so I can't judge."

Why would the school close?If you are implying it should close because of the poor performance of the football team you are a pathetic loser. It is first and foremost an educational establishment preparing youth for higher learning institutions. People always associate the success of a football team to the actual school. There is many students at St. Paul that are working hard for future success, don't lose the true perspective of what St. Paul is, once again an academic establishment.
