September 2010 Archives
After a shaky start, the Spartans (2-2) are back to .500 after a closer-than-expected win over California. Credit the Condors (0-4) for not letting injuries play a distraction and battling Schurr until the end. Here's the game recap.
Here's Thursday's injury report

La Serna had a trilling victory and Cal and Santa Fe couldn't rally for wins. Here are the game recaps for Thursday night.
Sorry for the delay with the Week 3 picks. Injuries affected the picks but everyone, including the computer, posted a better than .500 mark.
Since injuries are becoming more and more prevalent, and unfortunately, affecting games at a more frequent pace, the paper is going to start posting an injury report here on Thursday morning/afternoon.
Here's the first report.

While the La Habra High School football team deserves much credit for defeating La Mirada, I was more impressed with the play of the Matadores.
There were a couple of upsets last week that ruffled the records of the paper's designated football pickers.

With all sports in action this week, which include girls volleyball, cross country, girls golf, girls tennis and boys water polo, there are two ways to get results/box scores in the Daily News sports section.
There has certainly been a shuffle in the order of the Daily News Top 5 rankings. Here are the rankings.
What was supposed to be a showdown between Daily News No. 1 La Habra and No. 2 La Mirada, the CIF-Southern Section Southwest Division champ vs. the CIF-SS Southern Division champ and Orange County vs. Los Angeles County, has fizzled a bit into a battle of two 0-1 teams on Thursday at 7 p.m. at La Habra.
Coming off the most lopsided win during his two-plus-year career at El Rancho High School, Dons football coach Rick Zepeda deflected personal praise following his team's 41-0 victory over Los Altos in Friday's season opener.
I hope everyone had a restful Labor Day weekend. Before we talk about the upcoming schedule, let's give a couple of game balls to the Week 0 performers.
Whew! What a great first day of games. I posted the scores and game stories. Enjoy.
Well, I along with Calpreps and my fellow reporter Eric Terrazas were proven wrong by the gutty St. Paul High School team. The Swordsmen upset Southern Division champion La Mirada 24-17 Friday night at Goodman Field.
The win was St. Paul's first in a season-opener since 2004 while the Swordsmen snapped the Matadores 12-game winning streak. More on this game shortly. Congratulations St. Paul. Now that was heart.

The paper stopped by Whittier football practice on Tuesday afternoon, as the team was preparing for today's four-way scrimmage at Lawndale.
Too often the L.A. Times get bashed for its lack of local coverage of high school sports (I'll admit I do it often) and in particular how it often neglects or forgets the area.
However, I'll give the Times credit for recognizing some of our players and teams the last couple of weeks.
It's on to the final of four video prediction/breakdowns with SGVfootballer Aram Tolegian. In this video, we talk about the season-opening rivalry game between St. Paul and host La Mirada on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
According to Drake Griffin's legal guardian and uncle Jayvon Logan, the La Habra High School senior was cleared by the CIF-Southern Section office to play this Friday and for the rest of the season.
It's Week 0, as in zero, and time to initiate the local pigskin pick'em. This is where the paper makes picks on the weekend's game.
Obviously the format will be different, as staff writer Eric Terrazas fills in for the retired Roger Murray. We're both going head to head against each other and the computers over at Calpreps. I'm not sure what this is going to prove but I hope either Eric or myself come out on top. Otherwise, the robots may take our jobs.
It's on to the third video prediction/breakdown with SGVfootballer Aram Tolegian. In this video, we talk about a major showdown between La Habra and host Orange Lutheran (the game is at Glover Stadium). On Thursday, I'll post the last of our videos - St. Paul at La Mirada.
I hope everyone had a chance or will have a chance to pick up the PrepXtra football preview that debuted today. It has a preview on all 13 area teams along with some other interesting stories.
