Friday Night Scores and Recaps (Week 1)
Another strong week with a few upsets, a few solid comebacks and a couple of monster scores.
Cantwell Sacred Heart 49, Schurr 28
MONTEBELLO - In one of the great efforts in school history, Cantwell Sacred Heart High School running back Jonathan Mesa scored five touchdowns and rushed for 336 yards on 29 carries in leading the visiting Cardinals to a 49-28 upset victory over Montebello intracity foe Schurr on Friday night in nonleague play.
At times Mesa's space was startling, as the Cardinals' offensive line opened gaping holes that led to long runs. Overall, Mesa ripped off dashes of 25, 32, 52, 60 and 62 yards, with the latter two ending in demoralizing touchdowns.
Schurr tied the score 21-21 with 7:49 left in the third when Cantwell took over at its 34 on its subsequent possession.
On the very first play, Mesa flew up the gut and wasn't touched as he scored from 66 yards out while putting the Cardinals up 28-21 after the extra point with 7:32 left in the quarter.
After Schurr punted on a three and out, the Cardinals took over at their 48.
After a holding call moved the ball to the 40, Mesa again flew untouched down the visitor's sideline, this time scoring from 60 yards out to put the Spartans up 35-21 with 4:27 left.
Schurr scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Aaron Cantu to receiver Eric Magos, and Cantwell's last two touchdowns came on a 28-yard scoring pass from quarterback Christian Espinoza to receiver Adam Aguirre.
Espinoza also scored on a 1-yard keeper.
Mesa also had a first half to remember, powering for 158 yards on 14 carries in vaulting the Cardinals to a 13-0 advantage and a 21-14 halftime lead.
After a Cardinals three and out on their first possession, Cantwell's first big play came on a Mesa 33-yard carry to the Schurr 35.
Espinoza (9 for 17 for 145 yards) then hooked up with receiver Corey Collins on a 16-yard shoestring pass and catch that preceded a Mesa 19-yard touchdown.
After a Schurr punt, the Cardinals put together a methodical drive, marching 80 yards on nine plays over 4 minutes and 10 seconds capped on a Mesa 2-yard plunge.
The touchdowns put the Cardinals up 13-0 after a blocked point-after attempt.
Cantwell's final score of the first half came on a Mesa 5-yard carry off tackle left with 3:51 remaining that put the Cardinals up 21-7.
In between and after Cantwell's second and third score, the Spartans battled back.
Schurr pulled within 13-7 with 6:04 in the second quarter when Cantu (15 for 26 for 173 yards and one touchdown) led an 11-play, 80-yard drive highlighted by a 25-yard reception to Alejandro Castro.
Eventually, receiver Chris Chiaromonte scored from 10 yards out, thanks to perfect seal block from Magos. Schurr's other score came via a Chiaromonte 85-yard kick return.
Cantwell's Ernie Narbona posted three sacks, and Aguirre had four receptions for 113 yards.
Santa Fe 20, Warren 7
WHITTIER - Santa Fe High School's football team was resilient in overcoming Warren's stubborn defense 20-7 on Friday night at Titan Stadium.
Senior quarterback Justin Rincon led the Chiefs offense, going 9 of 19 for 106 passing yards and a touchdown to Steve Hernandez.
Running backs Julien Solis, Alex Mirola, and Isaiah Wilson combined for 83 rushing yards to combat the hard-working Warren defense, led by Joshua Callier and Aris Gamboa.
Although Warren running back Jamill MaGee rushed for 143 yards on 26 carries, the Chiefs senior linebackers Gael Esparza, Ricardo Saldivar and William Blauser had an impressive night.
Fourth-quarter interceptions by defensive back Marcos Gomez and linebacker Ricardo Saldivar allowed the Chiefs to maintain three- and six-point leads.
Saldivar's interception allowed Mirola to cap a 41-yard drive with an 18-yard touchdown run to give Santa Fe a decisive 20-7 lead.
Santa Fe's senior kicker Manuel Meza also contributed with a 20-yard field goal in the second quarter and a 22-yard field goal in the fourth to give the Chiefs a 13-7 lead.
The Chiefs began the second half leading 10-0 but gave up a 72-yard drive sparked by the running of Warren quarterback Sam Bettencourt and McGee.
Warren's Anthony Levanos gave Santa Fe wideouts trouble all night with three stops in crucial red-zone situations.
Other solid Chief performances came from defensive linemen Joe Valdez and Christian Mahlstede, who had four tackles apiece.
Warren's lone score came in the third quarter when Bettencourt connected with all-purpose standout Callier for an 8-yard touchdown that made the score 10-7.
The Chiefs play next on Friday at Titan Stadium against Bonita at 7 p.m.
El Rancho 13, Northview 10
COVINA - After delivering a 41-0 victory in last week's opener, El Rancho High School needed almost every minute in posting its 13-10 victory Friday over Northview at Covina District Field.
The Dons scored the game-winning points on their final play from scrimmage. With 13.7 seconds left, Daniel Moriel threw a screen pass to Josh Lopez, who eluded Northview tacklers and scored on a 38-yard reception with 4.1 seconds remaining in regulation.
El Rancho (2-0) secured the victory when the Dons' special teams stopped Northview's Marquise Thomas on the ensuing kickoff as time ran out.
Jeremy Ortega's 32-yard field goal gave the host Vikings (0-1) a 10-7 lead with 57 seconds remaining in the game. The Vikings' lead was short-lived, however, as Lopez's score capped a five-play, 80-yard drive.
Moriel completed all four of his pass attempts for 95 yards and two scores. Troy Campos rushed for 73 yards on nine attempts to lead the Dons.
Whittier Christian 49, Riverside Notre Dame 21
WHITTIER - Stephen Anderson led the way for Whittier Christian High School in a 49-21 victory over Riverside Notre Dame in Friday's nonleague game.
Anderson completed 15 of 18 passes for 243 yards in the first half to get the Heralds off to an impressive start.
Anderson, a senior, ended his night with four touchdown passes. He also rushed for a pair of scores.
Anderson finished his impressive performance with 298 yards passing. He missed just five of 26 attempts, with his longest gain a 62-yard completion to wide receiver Cameron Stanley.
Stanley also played a major role in the one-sided victory.
He had a big night with six catches, three of which went for touchdowns.
Junior wide receiver Grant Escober also caught six passes for 54 yards.
The defense picked up the slack for the injured Jeff Worthy, who is heading to Boise State next year. The unit was led by linebacker Tim Sanchez, who had eight tackles.
He was followed by Rudy Robles and Paul O'Laghlin with six tackles each.
Rowland 41, California 9
ROWLAND HEIGHTS - Thanks to a very productive first half, Rowland High School routed visiting California in a nonleague game Friday night.
Led by quarterback Michael Ball's 88 passing yards on eight completions, the Raiders (2-0) scored all of their points in the first half.
Ball also did some damage on the ground with touchdown runs of 14 and 1 yards.
Rowland running back Ervin Crawford also contributed with 81 rushing yards on eight carries, including a 19-yard touchdown run.
The Raiders scored two touchdowns on defense.
Danny McMahan recovered a fumble by the Condors (0-1) and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-0 in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, linebacker Terry Ford intercepted a pass and ran it back 19 yards to make it 34-0.
A fumble recovery by McMahan on the ensuing kickoff set up the Raiders' final touchdown, which was scored by Ball on a keeper.
Montebello 17, Rosemead 13
ROSEMEAD - Despite numerous errors, Montebello High School's football team almost pulled out a victory against Rosemead, but the Oilers ran out of luck and time, falling to their rival, 17-13.
It was a see-saw nonleague battle in which the Oilers took a 13-10 lead with just 9:09 to play. Backup quarterback Robert Zamoranos connected with George Romo on a 32-yard scoring pass, Romo catching the ball at the 10 and powering his way into the end zone.
But the Oilers (0-2) ran out of gas and couldn't contain Rosemead's well-oiled machine. Matt Fregoso capped off a 35-yard drive with a 21-yard burst off the right side for the deciding tally. The drive was set up by a 15-yard celebration penalty against Montebello.
The Oilers' Eric Guevarra nailed a couple of first-half field goals, covering 18 and 31 yards, to give his squad a 6-0 lead. And the Oilers front line of Matthew MartinDelCampo, Daniel Servin, Gabriel Moreno and Roberto Garcia held the Panthers out of the end zone through the first half, giving up only a 35-yard field goal by Chris Cancino.
Rosemead took the lead with 11:37 left in the final quarter when Matt Macias hit Danny Villalobos with a 1-yard pass. It was the first play of the last quarter.
Montebello's effort was hampered when starting quarterback Fernando Hoffens was injured in the first half after Rosemead was flagged for a roughing-the-passer penalty.
Downey 35, La Serna 24
DOWNEY - Offensive fireworks highlighted the last stage of the game as Downey High School defeated visiting La Serna 35-24 at Allan Layne Stadium in a nonleague game Friday night.
The scoring began with five minutes left in the third quarter when Downey's Jabari Riffin broke three tackles on a 23-yard touchdown run to give the Vikings a 21-10 lead.
Downey increased its lead with about 11 minutes left when Ralph Regalado's 2-yard screen run concluded a 12-play, 68-yard drive.
The Lancers countered with a 4-play scoring drive that concluded with a 43-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Andrew Buenrostro to Andrew Rosales.
After the Vikings turned the ball over on downs with four minutes left, a screen pass by La Serna was intercepted and returned for a touchdown by Vikings lineman Daniel Oveal to increase Downey's lead to 35-18.
The Lancers retaliated with a scoring drive featuring a 38-yard pass from Buenrostro to Connor Burke and a 21-yard scoring pass to Rosales.
On the game's opening series, Downey used a 33-yard run and a touchdown run of 52 yards by Kyle Lewis to take a 7-0 lead. On the subsequent kickoff, Fabian Salazar's 56-yard return preceded a 31-yard field goal by Travis Guerra to make the score 7-3.
On the Lancers' last possession of the second quarter, Buenrostro passed 24 yards to Rosales, Tommy Ruiz had a 25-yard run and Buenrostro threw a 14-yard scoring pass to Rosales.
Buenrostro finished 7 of 18 for 86 yards and two touchdowns.

Cal's staff is a little different than last years. Two coaches left and that is about 30 percent of the staff. I do not think they were the brain trusts of the group, but it is a little different.
Big Chief don't get me wrong, I too respect the staff at Cal. How could I not? they have done a very good job. Semifinals first year with Ancich's players but that is not that easy. If the players did not respect him they would not have played for him.
And the last two years have been OK in 08 and great in 09! This year is also a very, very big test as will be the next couple. No Terrence Jones. And Santa Fe is not getting the recruits they once did (I believe anyway) from the Norwalk area now that Norwalk is becoming powerful. It should be a very interesting few years.
But as far as Ancich is concerned I believe he deserves respect. Statistics also dictate that he and his staff, now without his brother Visco (a huge loss), deserve much, much more respect than some of the recent players' parents give them.
First taking Cerritos, a poor club, to the playoffs (before he came to Cal), next winning league on the field at Cal(it was not Grigsby's ineligibility that cost them the Santa Fe game), CIF quarterfinals losing to La Habra as Cal did in the new staffs first year. Then trying again at Cerritos, very unsuccessfully. But the job he has done at Villa Park has been very good!
I
set the record straight said ~ It wasn’t the transfer of Nick Grigsby which caused the Condors to forfeit 5 of the first 6 games. Anonymous has it right that it was another player. But in my own opinion it was the mass efforts to clear D. Ancich's star running back Grigsby that allowed this other kid to slip through the cracks no matter whose fault it was. Some would refer to that as KARMA at its best!
Big Chief,
I think that the enthusiastic but mis-guided anonymous was referring to one Dusan Ancich that left Cal ("got out of town") after the 2006 season and eventually ended up at Villa Park High School after a year at Cerritos College. The performance of Cal High was greatly aided by the questionable (some say induced) transfer of Nick Grigsby which caused the Condors to forfeit 5 of the first 6 games of the 2006 season. Some Cal fans claim that Ancich's departure in March of '07 was as quick as a Grigsby 40. In the end Nick got a D-1 Scholarship (if not fame) at Arizona, Dusan got a head coaching job (if not success) at a wealthy Orange County school and Cal got a coach that plays by the rules and has built Cal into a respected competitor in the DRL. All is well that ends well and given the DRL politics we should leave that sleeping dog lie...
Big Chief: My comment was just a true statement: Grigsby was cleared by the Administration. That is the way schools work. The Head Football Coach does not do the "clearing". That is the job of the CIF and school administrations. I do not know how smart D. Ancich is when it comes to those kind of matters, but I would guess that the administration gave both kids the OK. If they did not OK the 3rd string guy on kickoffs then Cal deserved to forfeit the game. If so, it was a stupid mistake by the coach. I do not think Ancich would make a huge mistake like that: to play a kid on the kickoff, or some special team, with a chance to forfeit. His season was just going OK, then Grigsby changed it all.
"Play sparingly"? I guess that meant if they get down, he will play. And they did get down (If I remember correctly).
Do not get me wrong, I am totally against all that bologne with players transferring in the middle of the year. I remember St. Paul got an Alemany (or some other similar school) at mid season a few years ago. That sucks. I agree. But if Grigsby got OK'd by the administration and I was coaching, I would run him 40 times too. That is the nature of wanting to win.
This isnt your typical schurr team. No one wanted to hit. No intensity whatsoever. Cantwell was ok, and that Mesa kid ran hard. But I have a feeling that this is gonna be a rebuilding year for Schurr. If they keep playing like they did Friday, they will be lucky to get out of the pre-season with a win. And Im a Scurr guy.
Anonymous ~ and how do you get ready for league? In your non league games so I’m not sure what you are “disagreeing again” with. I like Coach A as well and respect what he and his staff are doing over at Cal. I wish them all the best.
As for the administrative error, so not going there again with that one but I did love how the SP reject told the paper when he was given the word that TJ’s (non-recruited wink wink) older brother was cleared to play vs Santa Fe that he would be used sparingly. Anyone care to go back and see how many times he carried the ball that night?? I’m not going to but I do think it was around 40 plus times. Anyone care to define sparingly while you’re looking it up? And let’s not forget how he had his team stretch in the shape of a cross at a public school. Actually it looked more like a plus sign but whatever. TJ was a bonus from Grigsby. Damn good bonus though!
p.s. how funny you mentioned Montebello. Is that not where that other SP jerk landed after he got ran out of town as well????????
I do not know what you mean regarding Jones, but with his talent, he is any coach's guy. He would have had a great year with any good line, which Cal had last year. And that guy that got run out of town deserves more respect. A big reason he got run out of town is because the administration at Cal Ok'd some reserve out of SF who played on a kickoff, or some other special team. It was an administrative mistake, was it not?
Now for this season. I disagree again. I think Cal's staff, headed by Arnold, will have his team ready to play pretty soon. LM is going to be a tough one, but Sonora is a 4th place team that got beaten out of the playoffs by a sub-par Sunny Hills, Schurr just got hammered by Cantwell, a very small school, and Montebello is miserable as far as I am concerned.
Huge hurt of Cal's QB, which will hurt them and force them to run much more. They will be easier to plan a defense against, unless the new QB steps it up. And he may with the experienced staff at Cal.
I am hoping for 3 and 2, or at least 2 and 3! The league will be pretty weak, except for La Serna and Santa Fe. El Rancho has beaten noone, Pioneer has beaten noone, and Whittier just got killed by a team they killed last year!
I just respect the staff a bit; this will be a big test for them.
Terance Jones wasnt a Coach A guy, he was a leftover from that first SP jerk that got ran out of town. Love Coach A and know he will get it together for league.
I don't know if Schurr is that bad or is Cantwell that good. I'm leaning towards a combination of both. This did not look like a typical Schurr team. Schurr has always prided themselves with laying the hat. On Friday Schurr did not want to hit anybody. There was way too much arm tackling going on. I'm sure the coaches will right this ship and they will play better on Friday against a good Downey team.
Cal is a good team and Coach Arnold will coach his guys. Without Terance Jones they will be lucky to get out of pre-season with one win.
What the reporter failed to indicate in the Rowland-California game was that Cal QB Adam Contreras was knocked out of the game in the 2nd quarter with a shoulder injury. He went for x-rays and no details are available this morning.
Cal is very young and showed that, fullback Justin Dankert carried the ball with merit in the second half.
Coach Arnold's roll the week will be to prepare for a hungry La Mirada (0-2).
