Game Balls: Week 3

| | Comments (8) |

Before we talk about the upcoming schedule, let's give a few game balls to the top Week 3 performers.

game_ball-1.jpg The first game ball goes to El Rancho head coach Rick Zepeda.

For the second year in a row, his Dons have opened the season with a 3-1 record. So, what's the big deal?

Only once before this decade (2004) have the Dons started the season with a 3-1 record. El Rancho recorded its third win in four tries on Friday with a convincing 29-9 win over Montebello.

game_ball-1.jpgThe second game ball goes to La Habra quarterback Cody Clements.

The senior marked his first action since the Week 0 opener by completing 14-of-21 passes for 335 yards and four touchdowns in La Habra's 49-20 win over Downey Friday.

Clements was named the Daily News Player of the Week.

game_ball-1.jpg The third game ball goes to St. Paul junior Marcus Garcia, who was a featured participant in Sunday night's "Rogan Hero's" highlight clip show along with La Habra's Cody Clements.

Garcia intercepted L.A. Garfield quarterback Omar Gonzalez in the end zone and return the pick 101 yards for a touchdown in the Swordsmen's 24-10 nonleague win on Friday.

game_ball-1.jpg The fourth game ball goes out to Cantwell Sacred Heart senior quarterback Christian Espinoza.

The Cardinals signal-caller combined for 251 yards of offense and scored three touchdowns in Cantwell Sacred Heart's thrilling 56-46 come-from-behind win over Bell Gardens.

Espinoza competed 8 of 13 passes for 121 yards.

game_ball-1.jpg The fifth game ball goes to Schurr High School kicker Gustavo Tlatebchi.

The converted soccer player never attempted a field goal but still nailed the game-winning 36-yard field goal to propel the Spartans to an amazing come-from-behind 29-28 win over host El Toro. The Spartans trailed by 15 with under 5 minutes left to play but rallied to pick up their first win of the season.

game_ball-1.jpgThe sixth game ball goes to wide receiver Cameron Stanley, who went nuts against St. Margaret's.

The senior, who's also an accomplished center fielder, hauled in 14 receptions for 132 yards and one touchdown in the Heralds' 38-26 win at St. Margaret's. The win was the first for Whittier Christian over St. Margaret's this decade.

game_ball-1.jpgThe seventh and final game ball goes to La Serna senior wide receiver Andrew Rosales.

The two-sport star nabbed seven catches for 124 yards and one touchdown in La Serna's 32-28 nonleague win over La Mirada.

At one point, the Lancers trailed by 11 with under six minutes left before bouncing back.
