Helmets and Pads: Whittier
The paper stopped by Whittier football practice on Tuesday afternoon, as the team was preparing for today's four-way scrimmage at Lawndale.

The big theme was no-shows, as the team was missing a few players due to injuries, excused absences and other reasons.
I had hoped to check out senior Christopher Barclay, who is making transition from fullback to tailback this year. Unfortunately, Barclay missed practice due to a family issue.
My next stop was to check out the offensive line. Unfortunately, two lineman, including talented tackle Alexander Rishton, were out.
Later, I found out the team lost two defensive starters due to grades.
Despite all that, the Cardinals are making progress. I don't remember the last time I've seen as balanced a quarterback competition then what was going on between junior Gio Hernandez and sophomore Michael Viramontes.

I pity offensive coordinator Adrian Garcia, head coach Walter Scott and the rest of the staff with having to make a pick for the starting position. It's going to be a tough call.
I liked what I saw from tight end/kicker Kevin Medina, who was both quarterback's top target on Tuesday.

The good news for the Cardinals is that Rishton (bone bruise) and Barclay should be back before next week's season-opener at home versus Chino.

big oso we have lost most of that freshmen team and the ones wont start at varsity. maybe next year
Whittier Cardinals, the most underrated team in the Del Rio League. It is apparent last years Freshman class was no fluke. Having gone 8-2 with a defense that allowed less than 10 points a game. The sophomores that have been moved up to varsity are primed to make a huge impact.
After viewing Whittier's scrimmage with Lawndale, Santiago and Katella high schools. It was refreshing to see a dominate Cardinal defense. I do believe they only allowed one touchdown. What really stood out was the aggressiveness of the Cardinal defense.Very rarely were there solo tackles. The team swarmed to the ball like starved wolves. The secondary was even more impressive with outstanding run support and pass coverage. Receivers were blasted if they caught the ball and completions were few.
I will be the first to say. This Cardinal team is not a lower tier Del Rio League team. Good Luck Cardinals!
