It's a Stunner -- St. Paul knocks off La Mirada 24-17
Well, I along with Calpreps and my fellow reporter Eric Terrazas were proven wrong by the gutty St. Paul High School team. The Swordsmen upset Southern Division champion La Mirada 24-17 Friday night at Goodman Field.
The win was St. Paul's first in a season-opener since 2004 while the Swordsmen snapped the Matadores 12-game winning streak. More on this game shortly. Congratulations St. Paul. Now that was heart.

You completed a number of good points there. I did a search on the topic and found a good number of people will agree with your blog.

Wow, amazing blog layout! How long have you been blogging for? you make blogging look easy.
Kudos to you! This is a really good blog here and I love your style of writing. How did you get so good at blogging?
Love the blog here. Nice colors. I am definitely staying tuned to this one. Hope to see more.
Close St. Paul? I have three words for you..."March for Hunger". It's a personification of everything good at St. Paul that those who never went there will never understand. Don't disrespect our school's heritage, and we wont disrespect yours. WE ARE...SAINT PAUL! FOREVER!
The LM/La Habra game with be a true test to see who has the most. I think both teams are very good and they bothplayed some very good teams during the zero week. The team that LM has to look out for is Norwalk, their front line is huge and the back that they have is beast. I saw it first hand in a scrimmage game last week.
I would, respectfully, ask all St.Paul fans to put La Mirada and their fans in our rear view mirrors and look forward to our next game in two weeks. There are things being said by some bitter LM fans that we don't have to respond too. Most LM folks are good people and their program is a really good one, but they are no longer relevant to us. Let's start thinking about Norwalk High School. That's our future, leave the past behind. Thank-you
The game was gr8, I loved how SP never allowed LM to gain momentum. As always, there were many negative non-believer. I am very proud of the Kids, and Coaching Staff for keeping focused, and getting the job done! We have never been the bigger team, we win because we r meaner, we r technicians, we r conditioned mentally and physically, we study our scouting report, we practice hard and prepare, prepare, prepare, but most of all we r willing to endure whatever pain and punishment necessary in order to win! I love St Paul, and I am proud to be part of our beautiful tradition! One week at a time, every game is a big one, good luck...shock the world!!!!
Max preps dictates Palmdale beat Dominguez in the Semis 28 to 27. I knew they were close because I had Dominguez to beat Palmdale then win again in the finals.
But St. Paul peaked at the right time and kept getting better and better with that guy from Diamond Ranch.
I apologize for all the blogs one after another, but I thought this is good history.
Enough Already: Still no El Dorado, South Hills, Charter Oak, Trabuco and the like. Yes Diamond Ranch, may West Covina, and Pacific League teams, but nothing LM should not be competitive with. That is the way I see it anyway.
SP 08: My mistake. I thought they did because I seemed to remember Dominguez in the mix because I witnessed them beating up on SO Notre Dame in the finals (in Carson) a few years earlier. Is it possible that Palmdale beat Dominguez in the Semis?
Anyway, St. Paul cannot be taken lightly! That is for sure. And, definitely not to take anything away from LM, they did not have to go through Charter Oak, as they had to a couple or three (I'm not sure, maybe four) years earlier. That year they almost knocked off Charter Oak at the end. They have been place in a much easier division...no Charter Oak, South Hills, El Dorado, etc.
Anonymous: I am with you. SP's history, to anyone who has lived in the area in those days, is well, "HISTORIC". And I do not care what some say, Ancich's history is amazing. I do not care what year it is, or if some say his offense is outdated, etc. They must always be respected. The QB passed for over 200 yards (if I read it correctly). Looks like Visco Ancich will adapt to the situation and talent he has.
To Miguel Halcon and Fanatico LM doce-zero-cino
You said a mouthful. Now put up and shut up, and play.
Good Luck against the Highlanders.
god bless all the area teams
Mike Hawk and LMFan1205-little bitter are we?
Scoreboard baby!
To LM FAN1205-
I don't think anyone from the St. Paul camp is proclaiming another division championship with this win. I think they're just happy to quiet all the negative discussions that have been surrounding this storied program and quieting all the trash talk coming from the La Mirada faithful that has filled all the WDN blogs since La Mirada's win last year and leading up to last week's game.
For Mike Hawk-
Really? LM just moved up to D VII. They have to face teams in the playoffs they haven't played in a long time, if ever. Let me give you a run down of some of the schools they might play now if they make the playoffs...
El Rancho
Burbank
Bonita
Glenn
Diamond Bar
La Serna
Rowland
Muir
Diamond Ranch
Glendale
Arcadia
Crescenta Valley
Pasadena
Walnut
West Covina
Cal
Santa Fe
I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just being realistic.
SP?
They got real lucky. LM was not ready to play. Very unusual for Mashetti. My prediction is that SP will NOT win another game the rest of the year. They will be outcoached and outplayed everydown the rest of the year. Sorry guys......Fire Everyone!!
LOL..WOW one game and now your SP players are CHAMPS?? We'll just see who comes home with ANOTHER ring..HATERS like all of you is what will FUEL this LM team to bring home another RING!! Like you all say..Talk is cheap..And for a team with such great ALUMNI where were you all friday?? No Faith?? LM fans will always support no matter the outcome..You may have one this game, but we'll see who will bring home the BIG ONE!! LM fight fight fight!! HPT!!
Once A Swordsmen is correct...time to move to the next game. Lets put this one behind us and start preparing for the next one.
a Victory without 4 starting players due to injuries. wonder what the game would have been like if they were healthy
NORWALK, NORWALK, NORWALK in two weeks. Time for a new focus.
Have to disagree with SP. Defense played well. One LM TD was lucky, came on a deflected pass. SP defense stopped LM on third and short at least twice and fourth and short once. Also, forced a field goal at the end of the game. I think that was on the nine yard line. Linebackers and D backs were flying to the ball making LM runs short on yardage. SP had a smaller D front than LM's O-line. They, also, put pressure on the QB. Is there room for improvement, sure. They can get better. Now it's time to start thinking about the next game. This game was enjoyable, but now over.
I think the additions of Alumni like Wilson and Estrella have helped St. Paul they have been able to bridge the generation gap betwen these kids and Coach A. Good Luck and God Bless! Besides anything can happen on a Friday night and I think if a few more injuries mount for LM then they may be in some trouble. They can possibly lose the next 2 games. Cal Hi will surprise them and La Habra is no joke! Just remeber last year.
First of all I'd like to paraphrase a previous blogger:
"But our tradition of winning has always been with "class". Please keep this in mind (while posting things on this blog) as you continue your quest for a championship season. Be PROUD yet remain HUMBLE. As a SWORDSMAN, you always have the microscope on you. It's what goes with being a part of the Legacy of St. Paul Football. Remain HUMBLE, keep working hard. There is not a day you can't work on improving some facet of your game."
This guy has got it right. I know our kids will WIN WITH HONOR. Now it is our turn as SP bloggers to do the same.
As another blogger said, we now have to concentrate on our next game. The team has to play with the same intensity and heart they did Friday night.
I know some of our SP fans and LM fans are bashing the Matadores. I think you are misguided in your assesment of that team. That is a good team coached by a great coach. They will rebound.
As much as it pains me to say this....La Mirada will beat La Habra Thursday night. That will show everyone that the St. Paul victory was not a fluke.
i agree wit LM gUy
Like Once a Swordsman Said, Time to move on..
Its a long season. And remember;
"Difficulties in life are intended to make us better, not bitter".
One game doesn't make a season, but these types of games can make a season better! Play on and Good Luck!!
LM guy quit crying cause your son doesn't play. not our fault he sucks
You can tell LM Guy is a football idiot. If LM is going to lose all their game then they will go 0-10. Go read the funnies and stay off the sports page.
SP 08, you are correct. I believe Dominquez lost to Culver City or Palmdale in the first round. Culver City and Gahr vs. SP were exciting games.
Good start SP! Stay focused, keep winning, show your class, and bring our school back to its proud past! If we resurrect a winning program, it will help the school enrollment overall, its finances, and our chances of regaining respect.
Time to put this game in the rear view mirror and start thinking about the next game.
SPORTS FAN ORIGINAL:
For the record, I was not a fan of that Coaching staff 3-4 years ago, although I was supportive of the players. When I referred to "winning with class", I meant in our past dating back to the 70's, 80's and 90's. You are correct...those guys were a classless group.
It is disturbing to think that because we beat La Mirada, we feel we shocked the area of "it was an upset". These young men who wear the SWORD on their helmet should believe they will always win and when they do they should not feel like they need to come on to these blogs and throw stones (nor should the parents/fans/alumni).
Just my thoughts!
To Sports Fan Original:
SP didn't play Dominguez 3 years ago. At all. They beat Palmdale in the championship that year. They beat Quartz Kill, Culver City, Gahr in that order that year also. But never Dominguez.
Swordsmen, enjoy this until Sunday night then forget it until the end of the season. Monday start getting ready for the next game.
LM guy- You know what excuses are like.
I Love SP just dont want to get ahead of ourselve,
Yes a Win is a W, but You gotta win big like the old days not just a 7 point victory. The offense looked good but the defense wasnt that impressive, La Mirada was horrible.
LM Guy: Now you start ragging LM coaches and their QB? Ridiculous! They win CIF in the second year with a new staff and start placing their student/athletes in colleges with scholarships, and you are throwing in the towel already. That back-up quarterback must be your boy!
Ragging the guy ahead of him will not help your situation! Have you ever considered that St. Paul is in a bigger division, has Ancich in his 2nd year back, his son Visco is with him, SP may have something to prove, they play better schools on a consistent basis (no doubt about that; no Glenn, no Bellflower, no Artesia, etc), and the school did beat Dominguez (who won a championship a few years ago beating Sherman Oaks Notre Dame) in the CIF championship three years ago.
And I am definitely not a SP fan; I do not like they way they blog, and all the stupid talk they do. But, I have been around long enough (even though I do not follow football as I do baseball) to know they are SP and must always be very respected! ALWAYS!
YUP YUP: I hope Ancich's teams have more class than the group before. Yes they won that championship. That is awesome, but class that group did not have; unless "crap talk" is classy.
Big win SP
"This game appears to be a mismatch although the Swordsmen do boast a solid offensive line".
Nice job Campa, usually there is the separation of something into its constituents in order to find out what it contains, to examine individual parts, or to study the structure of the whole, your analysis was totally inane.. Where's Murray when you need him?
Yup-yup....
Well said.
Well actually, "SP" who posted at 12:31 PM, if you did some homework you would see that with all the realigning that went on during the summer, St. Paul is D IV (4) and La Mirada is D VII (7). Last year St. Paul was in D III (3) and La Mirada was in D IX (9). Wow, D IX... Does anyone happen to know what division 8-man football is in? Back to my point- It was more of a regional realigning that took place as opposed to a strength of athleticism. La Habra is still in D VI (6) and will probably repeat, or at least make a strong push again. Good luck to those boys at LH. As for LM, they'll have a tough time now playing with the likes of Santa Fe, Diamond Ranch and the likes of those boys. Its a whole new monster for LM now. But again, the games still have to be played.
So my question to you, "SP" poster is- Are you a sour LM supporter trying to get a "rise" by using "SP" as your name or are you truly a SP "supporter" who is disgruntled for whatever reason? A full disclosure would be nice.
I'm just saying
Are you for real SP is a Div 3 and La Mirada is A div 6 the score should have been different. SP needs to be in a div like La mirada then maybe you can brag , dont brag unless you really beat your enemy
Were are all the haters now?,I only have one thing to say.........NOW WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Attn St. Paul Parents, Players and Fans:
As an alumni, I congratulate the Swordsmen on a great victory. But our tradition of winning has always been with "class". There is not a day you can't work on improving some facet of your game.
(side note)Visko and Avina did a great job calling the game. Congrats to the entire staff keeping those boys focused despite the recent distractions and injuries.
"Our Lady Queen of Victory".....pray for us
"St. Paul".......pray for us
LA MIRADA WAS HORRIBLE I WAS EMBARRASSED TO SAY I GRADUATED FROM THERE. SHANE BLOOD LOOKS LIKE HIS BROTHER ON THE SNAP WHICH MEANS HE SUCKS. ALSO THEY GOT ONE OF THE BEST THROWING QBs IN THE AREA,BUT HE IS A BACK UP LA MIRADA POLITICS IF THEY ASKED PARENTS WHO IS THERE BEST QB I BET ALOT MAYBE ALL WOULD SAY NOT BLOOD.THESE COACHES NEED TO NOT PLAY FAVORITES AND START PLAYIN TALENT BECAUSE WIT HOW THEY LOOKED LAST NIGHT THERE GOIN TO HAVE A 12 GAME LOSING STREAK NOT ANOTHER WIN STREAK
great win for the Anciches and Ancich fans. Adding his son Visco may pay dividends.
What happened to LM Big 5. All that talk about them and nothing to show for it. If they were really D.1 material this would've been an easy game. I guess it all goes to show you that all that stuff doesn't matter. LM, you have a long season ahead of you and good luck to your verbal commitments cuz that schalorship isn't locked down yet. If they can't handle SP there is no way they should play D.1. That's the truth. S.P. isn't even great this year yet they still smacked your Big five n your weak division cif champion team around. Playing in that division, you shouldn't even be called champions. But congrats to the swords last night. Turns out all talk isn't everything.
Congrats St. Paul!
I was pleasantly surprised to hear the outcome of this game.
I'll admit, I had my doubts but it goes to prove that great coaching and hard working kids goes a long way.
Great win for your school. Nice to show all the doubters what SP football is all about. You just can't go crowning teams (LM) who don't have the tradition nor the history, all everything so fast. Good job SP, maybe now we see you on the schedule next season. Good luck the rest of the way and way to rep.
WOW
Way to go!!!!! nice jobs kids way to focus on football!!!!
and show some pride with in your skool!!!
CAMPA QUIT LIFE.
THANKS,
SP COUSIN
Proud of our boys. They showed big time heart. What a lot of you don't realize is that we were without 2 defensive starters tonight and our 2 biggest offensive line linemen were out as well. Give credit to those boys who stepped up and took their places.
WOW, ALL THIS PRESS ON THEIR 5 TOP DIVISION 1 GUYS AND NO ONE SHOWED UP TONIGHT. SP HAD 2 OF THEIR STARTING LINEMAN OUT DUE TO INJURY AND THEIR D-1 PROSPECTS COULDNT PENITRATE. LOL. ST. PAUL DEFENSE IS BACK AND NOW WE HAVE THE RIGHT COACHING TO DO SOME GOOD THINGS. GOOD JOB COACH A AND THE REST OF YOUR STAFF. THROUGH ALL THE NEGATIVITY AND SET BACKS THE LAST MONTH, YOU ALL CAME TOGETHER AND LED THESE MEN INTO BATTLE AND KNOCKED OFF THE SECOND RATED AREA TEAM. BY THE WAY, GREAT JOB LA MIRADA BY SHOWING SOME CLASS TONIGHT. AFTER SHAKING HANDS YOU ALL RAN OFF TO YOUR LITTLE LOCKER ROOMS AND COULDNT EVEN SHOW RESPECT TO ST PAULS ALMA MATER NORE TO YOUR OWN. WHAT A BUNCH OF CRY BABIES!!!
Congrats to all the SP Boys, this night is your night. Vega #48 dropped the hammer...enough said! SP24-LM17
Normally a Star-News contributor here...but I just wanted to give MAJOR congrats to the SP players and coaches.
I love games like this. A bunch of kids and their coaches under a huge, negative microscope a couple of weeks earlier, put the blinders, ignore the nay-sayers and work HARD.
Not a fan of SP or a hater of LM, just a fan of strong-willed kids who fight against the odds and succeed!!! Congrats guys and have fun tonight!
"St. Paul and La Mirada are two of the areas most storied football programs". I get St Paul. How do you figure La Mirada having a storied Past... El Rancho and St Paul are the story in this part of town! Please explain this one Campa?
Brotherly Love was displayed tonight! Congrats Swordsmen on your Pre-Season Victory over La Mirada.
Wow, What a game! All those irritatingly silly and time-wasting remarks by those SP Haters…. Its history now! You all can Eat Crow! Roger Campa can supply the napkins! LOL!
A "stunner", "upset", Hmmmm? Mr Campa why so melodramatic? We'll forgive you for showing a lack of sophistication and subtlety or for your inaccurate critical judgment and analysis!
Swordsmen showed that talk is cheap. Back to the drawing board Matador fan.
Matador fan, you proved these last two weeks that talk is cheap. You've got to play the game. SP was better tonight and had more heart. SP's O and D lines handled your guys tonight.
No stunner here. Great coach, great players, best fans.....besides La Mirada should be OC News not WDN. LMFAO. Puro st. paul. by the way how did your team do? LOL So much for you know it alls. Oh, by the way, Cantwell should replace that QB that can't' hit it's targets. Only star shining there is Becerra. OMG he was an animal tonight.
ILoveMoschetti said:
How sad are these pics? The practice uni's, the sled and even the coaches look like a Pop Warner team. Final score: LM 42 - SP 10.
Hey ILoveMoschetti, How do you like those practice uni's now?? Good luck with La Habra next week!
St Paul you have heart against all odds you showed La Mirada that bigger is not always a sure thing in football. That game was all heart! CONGRATS to our QB Telles he moved out of the pocket with bullets...
Great win Coach A! The boys came to play. So SPHS is better than La Mirada, tranfers and all!
Great game Saint Paul!! Personally, for me, this win is bittersweet. It is an AWESOME win for the Swordsman team that my son now plays on. He was on last years Freshman Champion Team, and now as a Sophmore is playing on the Varsity Team. I say bittersweet, because I am/was a Matadoor, class of 1987.
Now did St.Paul earn your RESPECT Matadors,or are you still in DENIAL? No,it was not an upset. SP players always go into games knowing they have a chance of winning.
God Bless all the teams and Good Night!
LOL...thank you for recognizing heart...u don't have to post this. keep up the good work Mr.Campa
I hope this win wipes out aram smile when he said "by how Much" meaning how much was ST.Paul was going to lose by.
