Thursday's Final Scores & Recaps
La Serna had a trilling victory and Cal and Santa Fe couldn't rally for wins. Here are the game recaps for Thursday night.
La Serna 32, La Mirada 28
Despite falling behind by as many as 11 points in the fourth quarter, the Daily News' No. 2-ranked La Serna High School football team mounted an improbable rally in defeating La Mirada, 32-28, in a thrilling nonleague game on Thursday at California High.
La Serna running back Richard Alvarez carried off tackle left from 28 yards for the game-winning touchdown with 1:38 remaining.
Even though La Mirada (1-3) received the ball, quarterback Shane Blood was sacked and the ball was recovered by linebacker Craig Jones with 43.6 seconds left to clinch it for La Serna.
The game appeared over when La Mirada's Max Gama sacked La Serna quarterback Andrew Buenrostro on fourth down with less than two minutes remaining at midfield.
The Lancers (3-1), however, received the break of the game when the Matadores were called for a facemask penalty that extended the drive and allowed Alvarez to score.
La Serna had pulled within three on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Buenrostro to Connor Burke.
The Matadores took their biggest lead at 6:42 in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard carry by Alex Munoz.
La Mirada scored the only touchdown of the third quarter when Gama punched in his third score of the game on a 6-yard off-tackle carry on a fourth-and-1.
The Lancers led 17-14 following a first half that had five lead changes.
La Serna trailed by four with 3:30 remaining in the half when it marched 62 yards on 11 plays and scored on a 2-yard plunge by Jones with 28.2 seconds left.
A point after by sophomore Tavis Guerra cemented the score at 17-14.
Guerra kick-started the game's scoring with a 31-yard field goal on La Serna's opening drive that consumed 8:59 and spanned 69 yards.
La Mirada struck back with a 10-yard touchdown run from Gama that put La Mirada on top 7-3 with 5:44 in the second quarter.
Gama later rolled into the end zone behind the Matadores' massive offensive line on a power sweep from 23 yards to give La Mirada a 14-10 lead with 3:37 left.
La Serna's other first-half score came on a one-play drive in which Buenrostro hooked up on a 55-yard scoring pass to receiver Andrew Rosales on a scoring slant.

After limiting Santa Fe to just one first down, the Aztecs needed 10 plays to go 67 yards as quarterback Austin Steele scored on an 8-yard scoring run to boost the lead to 14-0 with 26 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

On Esperanza's next possession, the Aztecs were stopped when a 50-yard pass play ended with a tackle by Santa Fe defender Gael Esparza, who forced a fumble in the end zone.
It was recovered by Santa Fe's Alex Mirola for a touchback late in the second quarter.
The third quarter was highlighted by two interceptions, one by Esperanza's Brady Martinez and the other by Santa Fe's Roderick Daniels, who returned it 52 yards.
Early in the fourth quarter, Esperanza culminated a 12-play, 68-yard drive with a 5-yard scoring run by Mike Mavibusan.
Mirola returned the ensuing kickoff 44 yards. The drive ended on an interception in the Esperanza end zone.
In the game's final two minutes, the Chiefs executed a goal-line stand with tackles by Joe Valdez, Esparza, Kevin Granados and Esparza on fourth down.
Sonora 34, California 14
LA HABRA -- Zach Ouderkerken passed for 216 yards and three touchdowns to lead Sonora High School to a 34-14 victory over winless California in a nonleague game on Thursday at La Habra High.
The host Raiders (4-0), who led 20-14 at halftime, took control in the second half against the Condors (0-3) by scoring on their first possession of the third quarter.
Baba Eko scored on a 1-yard run that capped an 11-play, 70-yard drive.
Sonora capped the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 25-yard pass from Ouderkerken to Alex Villagomez with 11:25 remaining.

California's Drew Castro completed 5 of 9 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown.
The host Raiders scored first on Eko' 6-scoring run with 2:31 remaining in the first quarter but missed the extra point.

The Condors briefly took a 7-6 lead on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Ben Siepak to Maximo Gonzales on a double-reverse flea-flicker with 10:18 left in the second quarter that gave the Condors a 7-6 advantage. That was the final play of an 8-play, 68-yard drive.
Sonora, however, rallied and went ahead 20-7 on an Ouderkerken scoring pass of 47 yards to Jakob McCarthy and 14 yards to Nico DiVincenzo.
The first one went 47 yards to McCarthy with 9:18 left in the second quarter. Ouderkeerken's other scoring pass covered 14 yards and went to DiVincenzo.

brand-new heard of the revolutionary Kinect? Its actually awesome! I never had so much fun playing gaming system before, eventhough I could call myself a hardcore player of which usually plays video games like Call of Duty etc. The Kinect is so different than other things I have ever played before. the actual motion controles perform really well, and plus, but not required to use a controller that can be played is the personification associated with freedom! No annoying button smashing any longer, a single word will do! You should think about getting the Kinect!.

Much better attitude and improvement on the line. The big fullback Ratliff was pretty good; not fast but can grind out yards with power. Him and Dankert, if he gets better, would be a very good backfield. Two hard runners, one with some speed and power, the other pure power. Maybe I should not predict that because Schurr's defense hasn't done well this year, but this team needs something we have not seen yet this year, and that combination in the backfield may be the combination the line needs to succeed. I want to win now, but that pair would be awesome next year, especially with experience.
I also liked the way the QB has improved, even with the two interceptions
I have to agree with Anonymous about the line, best in the league? Not right now but, last night was a much better effort then we have seen thus far. As far as the DB's go, the safeties are seniors who both have quite a bit of varsity experience. They need to hit, plain & simple. The corners are sophomores and will take some time but, they are improving and they will be good. The D-line did a better job also last night but far from what is needed. This whole defense needs to learn how to wrap up, the mistackles are killing them. Props to the soph QB, the kid is tough. He made some nice throws and had a couple of nice runs also. It was also nice to see our running backs actually run some people over like they should.
This team is pretty young & inexperienced but, last night was a huge improvement. If they can continue to improve & get Adam back for league, they may make some noise. Keep your heads up, believe in yourself & bring some attitude.
Big Oso:
Cal is definitely much, much better with Adam. Look what he did last year, even though teams were stacked up, as you say, to stop the 80 to 90% run offense. And he even made a couple of very clutch runs.
I definitely respect your opinion, but I did not see Sonora blitzing much, nor La Mirada. I think they played straight up, stop the run defense, reading the linemen and doing a very good job on weekends preparing the defense against what Cal does offensively.
I do not agree the offensive line is the best in the league, they have not been blocking very good. I think if they were the best in the league we would be able to run better and that may open the pass for a young QB. I am just recognizing that if the O line was really, really good Cal would be more successful on the ground, even with young running backs. There is no way around that. And that would help the passing game. I am not saying the O line is bad and I understand what you are saying about the D stacking up against the run. But Cal lost 3 or 4 very good linemen from last year; the center, Arreola (when they needed him running double tight or whatever), Beyer was nothing less than awesome, and the tight end was good.
I am sure the backs could do better on the blitz but it looks to me like their responsibility is to the outside. I do not know. It looks to me like the most of the time the defensive front is much quicker than the Offensive line. That is why there are so, so many rushing tries that end up for losses. Combine that with a defense that reacts very quickly to the offensive first movements and that leads to trouble for the running game. That, to me was the story against a very quick Rowland, La Mirada (who seemed to be in our back pocket), and an improved pretty quick Sonora.
No veer this week so out that goes. Castro threw the ball much better tonight and the line did better, granted it was against a Schurr team that has given up 106 points in three games.
You would like to see the triple option and I would like to see more double tight ends to spread the defense out. Problem: it may take the QB's running ability out of the picture. Play action out of it.
Good luck Big Oso. I think their attitude was better tonight.
Not having that DB coach around in the summer is hurting them now, especially with the lack of varsity experience back there. The DB's did not have a good summer and they have had a terrible start so far this year.
It's more than just blocking for the Condors, (Cal parent of a senior). The offensive line is the only glimmer of hope. Let me explain. Let's start with the offense. After watching all three games it's apparent the opposing teams realize the Condors can no longer strech the field with the passing game. The Game with Rowland didn't start out that way because Contreras was at the helm for two series before he was hurt and Rowland was in a cover two zone, respecting the pass. The Condors did manage to run the ball because Rowland had only 7 men in the box. Very suitable to run against. However penalties killed the drives and the Condores were unable to sustain them.
This year the Condors philosphy was to have a more balance attack with passing and running. With the graduation of Terris Jones there is no way the Condors could just run like they did last year. There is absolutley not that kind of talent in this years back field. Adam is a very good QB and last year when he did throw he was very efficient with very little mistakes. There was no doubt, going into this season Adam was ready to be a big part of the offense along with Ben Siepak(WR) and Maximo Gonzales(WR). The running game would be anchored with the hard hitting Justin Dankert(RB). However, all of this changed when Adam was injured.
Without Mark Arce, who was a solid back up and is now with St Paul High School. The Condors were left with Sophmore signal caller Drew Castro. This was a huge hit for the Condors. Now, don't get me wrong. Drew Castro will one day be a fine QB, It's just not his time now. He simply was put into a no win situation. The facts are, he doesn't posses the arm strenght of Adam Contreras nor the experience. It's apparent that the Condor offense has been simplified for him. This just happens under these circumstances.
What defenses are doing against the Condor offense are simply shutting down the run. They load the box with 8 or 9 players creating overloades. Very difficult to run against. There have been some instances where the safeties have only been 10 yds from the line of scrimmage. Under normal conditions with Adam at QB Coach Arnold would be licking his chomps if they did this to Adam. He knows if they come with the blitz Adam would recongnize it and check down to an intermediate pass route to the side of the blitz or throw to the reciever with man coverage. Adam simply gives the Condors a better chance of winning.
As far as the offensive line, it is still the best in the Del Rio League. Remember there are only five of them and they do a very good blocking for the run and pass. Why you see the other team in the back field is because of overloads and Blitz' not being picked up by the running back. This makes it very difficult for a young QB to feel comfortable in the pocket. This is exactley what the Condors defense would do against a team under the exact same circumstances.
Coach Arnold against Sonora did implement a veer option for young Drew Castro. He did this knowing this was better suited for Castro. What is difficult with the veer is you need more than a week to perfect it. This was a huge change for an offense that has not worked with it all spring and summer. The bottom line is, while Drew Castro is at QB, teams will shut down the run and force him to beat them with passing. So far it's working against the Condors.
What I would like to see is a old school triple option implemented for Drew Castro. It's apparent that his greatest asset is his speed. The triple option is designed for just running and it doesn't matter how many men the defense has in the box. The triple option is about isolating the defense and creating one on one coverage for the running backs out on the perimeter. Example would be the wish bone of Oklahoma of the 60's and 70's or out of the power "I" as the way Nebraska perfected it all the way to the 90's. University of Texas Coach Royal invented it back in the 50's and for a very long time thats how football was played. It was such a dominating offense. It took the great Coach Bud Wilkerson of The University of Oklahoma to off set it with the 5-2 defense otherwise known as the "okie". In comparision its would be what the 3-4 defense is to the spread offense of today.
The blocking is very bad and its hard to win without it. Parents of seniors lets get our kids to believe we can come back and cause a little havoc. Give your kids confidence
Titan fan,
Yes, I would have loved for you to win Friday night and come into the Cerritos game and DRL with some great momentum and a surprise record. The difference is that LSHS did come through in the last 6 minutes and came home with the W. Then your fellow fan PT FB has to pop off about the quality of the competition that LSHS has played before your game at SH. My point, play the game you got in front of you and don't try to pee on someone else’s parade. I do believe that the Titans can win the next 3 and come into the LSHS game above 500. If so then best of luck to them to make the playoffs for the 1st time in I don't know many years. As far as I am concerned, everyone in the DRL is a brother (or at least a cousin) until we play them that game. The quality of the play is always best when the competition is better and great wins always bring cred to everyone in the league.
Good luck and we will see you in 5 weeks.
PS you can leave PT FB at home licking his wounds and crying in his beer...
Caught you RED faced Campa,
Titan running attack actually did pretty well against Sunny Hills. Too bad the team came up short at the end.
Trying to stay away from football but it is tough. PT FB talking trash before beating anybody that won 3 or more games in a season. When is the last time you finished ahead of La Serna? 8 or 9 years?
Ridiculous. Talk is cheap, and you are talking with no reality. Rushing attack of Pioneer. You guys have not been to the playoffs for how long?
Real Talk,
It is very fortunate that NCAA referees are not required to take a literacy, punctuation or grammar test. Looking at your writing I would say that you may have finished High School, but I doubt that you finished the 1st semester of the Community College that you attended because you were unable to pass your SAT's. Please don't insult our intelligence by claiming you are anything but what you are, a disgruntled fan that is grasping for explanations as to how your team blew an 11 point lead in 5 minutes. It is not necessary to try to convince yourself and others that La Mirada is a better team by lying about your credentials. La Mirada lost, get over it and help the team to get better.
PT FB
So tell us, how did that awesome Titan running attack work out against Sunny Hills? I bet you are not still wondering how La Serna is going to handle that awesome attack.
PTFB
Yes, you are right. I bet after taking on D1 Wilson and La Mirada the entire La Serna team are staying up late at night worrying about that Pioneer rushing attack. Do you think before you write or it just an impossible urge for you to contain that drivel? Is the chance to throw up an empty challenge too great because you know that when the deed is done you will have nothing to do but tuck your tail and mutter as you walk away in disgrace?,... Bring it and then pop off or better yet pop off after you meet Sunny Hills and Cerritos... I think after those 2 games, you will be seen as the fool that you are.
saw the video that was sent to me there was al ot of questionable calls not one holding call when i saw at least 10 that were right in front of the ref. Then the facemask call that no one grabbed or even touched the facemask .Im a ncca ref and to see that no wonder there in high school. Other then that it was a good game but that la mirada team should have won but that la serna running back is amazing.I think if La mirada had a better Qb who didnt flop with the pressure they would have won. But im hoping the RB from La serna gets picked up from a D-1
Lets wait till La Serna plays some real teams in Del Rio League. Cant wait to see if they can handle the rushing attack of the Titans. P and G.
Don't even try to jump on the bandwagon with that "Daily News' No. 2-ranked La Serna High School football team" stuff Campa. The truth is you picked against La Serna and the last poll that you have published had them at 4th. Just admit that you missed the mark and have been kissing the wrong A$$ all season. Maybe now you can realize that they are a good team with GREAT character. Give me that profile over a bunch of D-1 super stars any day.
