What a Game...La Habra Knocks off La Mirada 23-17
While the La Habra High School football team deserves much credit for defeating La Mirada, I was more impressed with the play of the Matadores.
As disappointed as I was with La Mirada's lack of fight against St. Paul, I was as impressed with their hunger and mentality tonight.
The Highlanders led 10-0 at the half and the Matadores tied it twice at 10-10 and 17-17 before La Habra's Ahmed Avery scored from 5 yards out with 3:17 remaining for the game-winner as the Highlanders escaped, 23-17.
Even then, the Matadores drove down field and quarterback Shane Blood converted a tough 4 & 9 at the La Habra 31 with an 11-yard scramble with 1:42 left.
Blood went up the gut for another 7 yards to the 13 before three straight incompletions ended the game.
Highlanders running backs Ahmad Avery and Drake Griffin had big nights while the Highlanders received a workmanlike effort from backup quarterback Matt Yackey, who was filling in for the injured Cody Clements.
While Blood missed a few wide-open receivers, you had to love the kid's heart and moxy. The same goes with Gama and receiver Anthony Diaz, who stepped up in the absence of Aaryn Bouzos.

It's not necessary to call out individual players for derision. Respect for all the young men who put it on the line every game. Two good programs going head to head is what football fans love. We need more of it in this area. Win, lose or draw I'd love to see my Swordsmen play these two every season. It would be great fun.
Great game by 2 great teams. Anybody who writes negative things about a high school player is weak. The kid from La Mirada is a great player and I hope he has a great season.
@ JUST THE FACTS: No class. Griffin had a great game, don't take that away from him just because it was a bitter loss for a very talented LM team

Nice effort, by the LM Team! Too bad they were short changed by the play calling in the final minute.The bonehead coaches gave that one away!
WHAT A GREAT GAME , BY BOTH TEAMS !! LM Coaches will be / should be kicking themselves for the play calling at the end, 3rd and 2 ; 4th and 2 , why not run the ball? COULD HAVE , SHOULD HAVE WON THAT GAME !!!!

Good effort La Mirada. Should have won it. Two pass plays in the end when you needed 2 yards for a 1st down and good field position at the end killed it for you. Still had plenty of time. Bad play calls by the coach. Your line was dominating the LH D-line; why pass?? Anyway, again good effort and good luck on the rest of the season!
