Friday's Week 4 Scores & Recaps

| | Comments (120) |

There was some thrillers and some tough results for our area teams. Here are the recaps.

Charter Oak 17, Santa Fe 0

COVINA -- Held scoreless for three quarters, it would have seemed the Charter Oak High School football team was ripe for an upset on Friday night against visiting Santa Fe.

But the Chargers defense was superb and the offense good enough in a 17-0 nonleague victory in a showcase of two of the winningest coaches in the CIF-Southern Section -- Charter Oak's Lou Farrar (242-100-5) and Santa Fe's Jack Mahlstede (222-132-5).

The big question prior to the game was how well Chargers backup quarterback Josiah Thropay would play.

Thropay completed 10 of 16 passes for 93 yards with one touchdown against two interceptions as Charter Oak scored 17 second-quarter points.

In the second half, however, the Chargers (3-2) were held to one first down and 47 yards of total offense.

That didn't matter, however, as their defense sacked Santa Fe quarterback Justin Rincon (11 for 20 for 99 yards with one interception) four times and held the Chiefs rushing attack to four yards.

Santa Fe's offensive standout was senior receiver Steven Hernandez, who hauled in seven catches for 70 yards. Junior defensive back Marcos Gomez had two interceptions.

Charter Oak sophomore running back Khari Garcia was his team's top offensive performer, rushing 26 times for 154 yards.

The Chargers put the Chiefs (1-3) into a 17-0 hole by halftime.

Thropay connected with junior receiver Chris Gilcrest for a 21-yard touchdown at the 1:45 mark in the second that put Charter Oak up 17-0 after the extra point.

Thropay previously bruised his way into the end zone from a yard out as he capped a 10-play, 53-yard drive that spanned 4 minutes, 43 seconds at the 10:44 mark in the second quarter that gave Charter Oak its first score.

Santa Fe had a chance to repel Charter Oak on the previous play, a fourth and 1 from the Chiefs' 4, but couldn't stop Garcia from picking up three yards.

Charter Oak's other score came via a 37-yard field goal by Jack Schneider.

Santa Fe kept Charter Oak out of the end zone on that drive thanks to a seven-yard sack by junior linebacker Jonathan Altamirano.

The Chiefs defense also came up with a another stop when Altamirano tipped a pass picked off by Gomez.

The turnover was wasted, however, when the Chiefs fumbled two plays later and the ball was recovered by Charter Oak's Nick Alexander.

Chargers senior linebacker Tanner Gibas also picked off a pass by jumping in between a screen pass.

The Chargers owned the first down battle in the first half, 14-1.

St. John Bosco 35, La Habra 17

BELLFLOWER -- Two long touchdowns in the third quarter spurred St. John Bosco High School's 35-17 football victory over visiting La Habra in each team's final nonleague game Friday night.

After La Habra's Sean Wale kicked a 25-yard field goal early in the third quarter to reduce the Highlanders' deficit to 21-17, the Braves (4-1) scored touchdowns on consecutive possessions on pass plays of 65 and 42 yards from quarterback Ray Medina to Rodney Morgan.

The Highlanders (2-3) threatened twice in the fourth quarter, only to be stopped by an interception by St. John Bosco's Royce Moore and a loss of the ball on downs with less than a minute to go in the game.

In the first quarter, each team capitalized on a defensive opportunity.

After La Habra's Aaron Porter intercepted a pass, the Highlanders drove 76 yards on short runs by Drake Griffin, Ahmed Avery and Brett Bartolone with Bartolone scoring the touchdown on a 2-yard run.

After the Braves' Michael Rogers recovered a La Habra fumble, Martin Brown ran 21 yards for a score and a 7-6 lead.

St. John Bosco then held La Habra on downs late in the first quarter and the Braves mounted a 67-yard drive, culminated by Brown's 4-yard scoring run.

The Highlanders then drove 80 yards with Cody Clements passing 12 yards to Alex Ybarra to tie the score at 14-14.

St. John Bosco went ahead 21-14 when Bryce Treggs caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Medina with 4:21 remaining in the first half.

La Mirada 58, Artesia 7

LAKEWOOD -- Dipping into an abundant Artesian well, La Mirada High School overwhelmed host Artesia 58-7 on Friday night.

Starting defense of their Suburban League title, the Matadores (2-3) scored early and often, washing over Artesia (0-4) with a flood of touchdowns en route to a 58-0 halftime lead.

Senior quarterback Shane Blood led the early onslaught by passing for touchdowns to cap each of La Mirada's first four possessions.

The huge score must have brought a soothing balm to La Mirada, which had been stunned with three nonleague losses.

After building the massive halftime lead, the Matadores played their reserves the entire second half.

While the Matadores never dented the scoreboard again, Andrew Luna was able to rush for 76 yards on 17 carries.

Another reserve running back, Jason Factor, scored a pair of touchdowns in the first half on runs of 1 and 3 yards.

Artesia's lone touchdown came late in the second half, on a 75-yard pass from Francisco Galan to Dezeon Israel.

The well gushed forth with gallons of refreshment in the first half as the Matadores streaked to a 58-0 lead.

La Mirada streaked to an insurmountable 58-0 halftime lead, which came mostly likemostly via the passing of Blood.

The 6-foot-3 senior quarterback Blood connected on 10 of 14 first-half passes for 223 yards, biting off huge chunks of Artesia real estate.

The first four of those aerials went for touchdowns, 28 yards to Anthony Diaz, 34 yards to Max Gama, 32 yards to Sean Trani and 30 yards to Aaryn Bouzos.

The Matadores' defense racked up another two touchdowns.

Reuben Poncedeleon electrified the La Mirada crowd with a 52-yard punt return for a touchdown and Marcus Vargas picked up a Pioneers' fumble at the 10-yard line and ran it in for a score.

The Artesia defense also inflicted a safety on Warren, when Isaac Luatua tackled quarterback Galan in the end zone.

Whittier Christian 21, Salesian 14

WHITTIER -- Whittier Christian High School maintained its perfect record with a 21-14 nonleague victory over Salesian on Friday at Whittier College.

Grant Escobar turned in an impressive effort for the host Heralds (5-0), gaining 257 total yards from scrimmage. He rushed for 183 yards on 28 carries and hauled in five receptions for 74 yards.

Heralds quarterback Stephen Anderson also played a major role, throwing for 282 yards and two scores on 24 of 37 attempts.

Salesian (3-2) had one last chance late in the contest when it intercepted an Anderson pass deep in Mustangs' territory.

The Heralds defense, however, secured the victory by stopping the Mustangs' drive at the WCHS 28-yard line.

The game was scoreless until late in the first half.

That's when Rudy Robles gave the Heralds a 7-0 lead with a 3-yard run that came with 30 seconds left in the second quarter.

Anderson then accounted for the Heralds' second score when he threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Stanley, who finished with seven receptions for 73 yards.

Salesian scored both its touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Mustangs quarterback Jihad Vercher threw for two scores, a 34-yarder to Dominique Brown and a 15-yarder to Gregory Castillo.

Whittier Christian's third score came on Anderson's 23-yard toss to Cody Bronkar with 6:13 left in the fourth.

Cantwell Sacred Heart 49, St. Bernard 28

MONTEBELLO -- Cantwell-Sacred Heart High School's football team rolled over St. Bernard 49-28 in a Del Rey League opener Friday night.

By winning, the Cardinals ran their record to 4-0. The Vikings fell to 2-3.

St. Bernard opened the game with a touchdown drive, capped by running back Greg West's scoring run. The Vikings, though, countered with a touchdown reception from wide receiver Christopher Mack, though, gave the Vikings up to 14 points in the first half.

The Cardinals scored three times in the first quarter. Two touchdown runs by Jonathan Mesa, and a touchdown catch by Jacob Alaniz, gave the Cardinals a 28-14 lead over the Vikings.

Mesa continued to pile up yards on the ground and finished with 32 carries for 322 yards. He scored five touchdowns -- three in the fourth quarter.

Cardinals quarterback Christian Espinoza also had a good night, throwing for 84 yards and rushing for 49 more.

The Vikings tried to rally late with two fourth-quarter touchdowns by quarterback Christian Smith and running back Davin Barnes, but came up short.

Paramount 16, Whittier 6

PARAMOUNT -- Whittier High School appeared to be on its way to its first victory of the season but Paramount rallied in the second half for a 16-6 nonleague victory on Friday night at Pirates Stadium.

The score was tied 6-6 in the fourth quarter when a pass by Whittier (0-3) quarterback Michael Viramontes bounced out of the grasp of wide receiver Daniel Gutierrez and into the hands of Paramount (2-1) cornerback Josh Viray, who returned the interception 32 yards for a go-ahead touchdown with five minutes remaining.

The Cardinals took a 6-0 lead on two first-half field goals by Kevin Medina of 36 and 21 yards, both in the second quarter, and Whittier hung onto the advantage at halftime.

The Pirates took possession in the third quarter and drove 80 yards in 16 plays, all rushing attempts.

The game-tying touchdown was scored by Jerramie Jackson on a 1-yard run at 8:14 of the third quarter.

Whittier was led by senior running back Ricardo Villanueva, who rushed for 66 yards on eight carries.

Viramontes, a sophomore, completed 6 passes in 18 attempts for only 33 yards and two interceptions.

St. Paul 28, Ayala 6

CHINO HILLS -- St. Paul High School (3-1) handed Ayala (4-1) its first loss in a hard-fought nonleague game Friday night, 28-6.

The Swordsmen dominated in the third quarter, maintaining possession for most of the time and scoring twice.

Tyler Carrillo caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Paul Telles with 4 minutes to go, and Cabral later punched in a 5-yard scoring run.

St. Paul's A.J. Gonzalez provided the only score of the fourth quarter, returning an interception 35 yards.

The Swordsmen defense limited Ayala to less than 200 total yards, allowing Blake Wallace only two passing completions and picking him off three times.

Gabriel Gonzalez had two of the interceptions.

For St. Paul, David Cabral had 20 rushes for 94 yards and two touchdowns, and Telles finished 5 of 10 for 70 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

For Ayala, Wallace was 2 of 13 for 55 yards and three interceptions. Mauricio Reynoso had 11 rushes for 32 yards.

The first half was slow, the first points coming when Ayala kicker Jacob Osborne made a 33-yard field goal at the start of the second quarter.

Cabral then had a 1-yard touchdown run for the Swordsmen before Osborne nailed a 23-yard field goal to pull the Bulldogs within one just before the end of the half.

The halftime score was 7-6.

Pioneer 17, Cerritos 16

WHITTIER -- After an intense fourth quarter, Pioneer High School held on to win its nonleague football game with Cerritos, 17-16, on Friday night at Pioneer.

Pioneer traded fumbles with Cerritos (the latter was recovered by Titans linebacker Arturo Perez) with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter as Pioneer's 17-10 lead was in jeopardy.

With six minutes left, Cerritos (1-3) drove 60 yards and scored when Montel Hawkins caught a 12-yard pass from quarterback Jimmie Guevara, making the score 17-16.

The Titans (2-2) saw their lead remain intact when the snap on the extra-point attempt was fumbled by Hawkins, who recovered and was tackled before reaching the goal line.

Titans running back Tony Botello rushed for 111 yards and a 10-yard touchdown, and wide receiver Anthony Perales scored a touchdown on a 24-yard pass from quarterback Daniel Castro.

Pioneer's final score came in the third quarter on a 40-yard field goal by kicker John Lobos.

The Titans switched quarterbacks on every possession, alternating between starter Carlos Vasquez, who was 5 of 5 for 18 yards and an interception, and Castro, who completed 3 of 8 for 70 yards and a touchdown.

La Serna 44, Warren 7

WHITTIER -- La Serna High School's assertive aerial attack, effective running game and stout defensive front all contributed to its nonleague victory over visiting Warren on Friday night.

La Serna quarterback Andrew Buenrostro had an impressive outing, completing 13 of 18 passes for 121 yards.

Buenrostro's pocket presence was exemplified midway through the third quarter when, despite a botched snap, the senior kept his composure and spiraled a 52-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Rosales.

That gave the Lancers a commanding 37-7 lead.

With 10:36 left in the second quarter, Craig Jones' tackle of Warren running back Jamill Magee for a 5-yard loss illustrated the effectiveness of the Lancers' defense.

Defensive linemen Micah Earley, Alex Harros, and Ivan Ramirez dominated the line of scrimmage for La Serna.

Lancers running back Richard Alvarez rushed for two touchdowns. Halfback O.J. Medina's 3-yard touchdown in the first quarter opened the Lancers' scoring parade.

SP has a good record. But when you play The Sisters of Mercy High School every week there's no excuse not to win.. The schedule maker gave St.Paul an easy road to go undefeated before league, and they still blew it..Norwalk?? Really.. good luck in league.. you're going to need it.

Oh gee OC Football Fan, your words are so destructive I feel like I may cry. Give me a break. Because you are a Highlander that got thumped by all Trinity league schools I'm an imbecile? Man, my psyche is crushed and I don't know if I can go on - LMAO! What you don't get moron is that it's one thing to have an opinion; it's another to spew crud for the sake of making the locals happy and not checking fact! That does not seem imbecilick to me, it sounds like someone standing up for what's right. Like Campa does get it? What a joke! If he did, none of this would have started inni the first place. Tell you what, you all worry about the "WDN teams" and let us D1 teams move on to bigger and better things - deal?

TrinityFootball said:

Campa, because I'm a man of my word and because I have no problem admitting when I'm wrong, I just researched it and you are right: it was Tolegian that made the dumb "all downhill from here" statement before the Bosco game. I APOLOGIZE. That said, I stick by all alse I said about your reporting and ill advised comments. Now I'm out - really this time.

TrinityFootball,

One thing we all know is that you're a imbecile!! Campa, These guys just don't get it!!

TrinityFootball said:

Campa, All we are doing is pointing out your insulting comments and the fact that they were upsetting. It is normal for human beings to get upset and the personal comments you made deserved a response; you are very thin skinned for a sports reporter. Also, you confirmed my point in that you know nothing at all about SJB football, so why would you make verbal and written comments about something you know nothing about - journalism 101: learn the facts! You sure seemed interested is SJB last week, but you didn't do your homework before running your mouth and pen. Now I'm done! (And as far as all you other folks, mind your own business or don't read the posts. Do I say anythnig about all the SP crude? Like Campa, if you don't know what's going on mind your own business.)

Andrew J. Campa said:

Hefe and TrinityFootball,

You keep on making this conversation into some debate about St. John Bosco football. Let me be clear, I'm not debating St. John Bosco football. I'm not interested in St. John Bosco football because the program is outside the coverage area.

You guys are entitled to your opinion as am I. What I said in the video was my opinion and what you've said in these posts are your opinions.

What I'm saying and what hasn't been addressed is the lack of civility. Why is it okay to make fun of a person's personal appearance? Or to call them a brown noser or other derogatory comments? Are you both saying that's acceptable because you're upset or because you don't agree with me?

I had to delete a post by another commenter who called a 16-year-old football player a "ghetto kid?" Is that acceptable?

Hefe, I'm not debating the "truth" about Negro or St. John Bosco. Look at my last two comments. Here's what I said on the last comment, "There's no need to use profanity or get personal. This is high school football we're talking about. You do your school a disservice by using phrases such as "dumb @%$" and "brown nosing" and "stupid comments" and "dumb commentary." Why is there a need to speak like that? I haven't said anything vulgar in your direction, so why do you feel the need to be vulgar?"

Hefe, so, because you agree with TrinityFootball, it's alright to take cheap shots at another person? It's alright to use the above terminology? Did I use any of that when I talked about St. John Bosco on the video? Did I use any of that to refer to Jason Negro or Martin Brown or anyone else? Have I used any other such phrases in my responses to you? No. So, why do I or does anyone else on this blog deserve that?

C'mon guys. Why do we have to go down that path? Why can't we just disagree without taking everything personally?

Why can't you just make your point and move on without negative comments? I'll tell you both what, let me start that trend. This is my last point and I'm moving on. Thank you.

Hefe said:

You guys might not like what Trinity is saying but his comments are pretty factual in regards to what Campa said in that video and what the truth is in regards to why Coach Negro took that job at Bosco.

Who wouldn't want to coach at their old high school??

Campa made it sound like the ONLY reason he did it was to get back at La Habra.

Pretty ridiculous assumption if you ask me.

Mr Campa,
I thought you were going to do something about keeping those so called bloggers off the blog that use more then one name, or the "anonymous tag" to come on here only to incite hate towards a school or a group of people based on were they live or come from.

This so called SP Alum is definitely not from St Paul. I been reading this blog for about 4 years and I can tell you this SP Alum sounds like the same joker that use to identify himself as a Cantwell supporter. The same guy that could not spell or write, and possible had a hard time speaking the english language.

There has to be a better system to keep all these people with personal vendettas off of this blog. I thought you had taken these steps to better the quality of the blog over the summer? There is no need for anyone to come on here and start attacking these young folk, who are out on the field giving it their all. Comments like those need to be removed as soon as possible.

As a whole the WDN blog community has been doing better in not attacking the kids at all our local schools. Its the few (about 10%) knuckle heads that come on here and try to cause problems for all the schools by spreading their hate. Please do a better job at policing the blog. It only my observation. Thank for your time.

I am 1986 Alum from SP Swordsmen and that is when the down turn started, not right away but SP Alums kids started to dwindle. Elongated with the questionable receiving enrollment began to stem away SP Alum and their kids.

Campa,

Just block TrinityFootball's comments. There is no need for his comments.

Trinity Football: That was pointless. You lost me at the first sentence. If you have a point, make it. BTW you looked pretty brave calling out A.C. like that. Takes some big uns to call out someone while hiding behind a keyboard.

Anonymous said:

SP Alum do you not also have two other starter by the name of Ortega & Sanchez that are also Pico Kids? Where you be with out the "Pico Kids". They must have some kind of talent to start over some other player on that team.

TrinityFootball said:

Campa, you need to stop. I know what I read and you can deny that the list exists and that your name was not on it, but it was published in the WDN. I think you guys had a pic of a player wearing powder blue and black and I’m assuming they are the braves or something because of the symbol on the helmet. Oh and by the way, don't talk to me or school me on the Salesian message, I know it well. That said, Salesians and practicing Christians of all sects get upset too, we are human. In addition to the aforementioned comment you and that other guy made about it being downhill for the Whittier Daily News Highlanders, you made an even dumber comment about our Coach in that ridiculous video you're referring to, and it went like this: "what do they say, if you can't beat 'em, join the Trinity League." Do you realize that Coach Negro is an SJB graduate? All of his brothers are SJB graduates too. Did you have any idea that SJB was/is Coach Negro's dream job and it was the only coaching position that Coach would leave Trubuco Hills for; of course not cause you have no fact checker. So moron, he left TH for home and it had nothing to do with the Trinity League. He would have left even if Bosco played in a weaker league, like say the Freeway League. You know the one the Whittier Daily News Highlanders are a part of. Now, I suggest you check your facts and stop making ill advised comments. Open your eyes beyond La Habra, there are a lot of really great teams in the SS that would work them and in fact I don't think there's a single PAC-5 team they can beat. Check it out, you might enjoy it. Oh and by the way, do something about that goofy haircut of yours you brown noser.

SP Alum...if were truly a SP Alum you wouldn't be talking about our (not "are" like you spelled it) kids like this.

Just another hater trying to cause trouble is how I see it.

As a Pico Rivera product and St. Paul alumnus I have to disagree with SP Alum, it is very apparent that you are trying to make SP look bad to the Pico kids. For your information Pico roots are heavy at SP and are necessary for the success of the program. Years back the Dons ran the exact same plays at SP. Let's also not forget to mention that SP was established at St. Marianne in Pico Rivera. Please don't come on these blogs and post as a SP alum, everyone with comon sense knows that Pico Rivera kids are vital to the success of SP. Go St. Paul and go El Rancho Dons! May God bless all of our youth in our city...

TrinityFootball,

You don't seem to understand what I'm saying. If you want to rip me that's perfectly okay. I picked incorrectly and I was wrong. I'm not ducking that and I congratulate St. John Bosco on a good win.

What I don't like is you continue to make incorrect statements about me. Nowhere in the Whittier Daily News Newspaper or website did I ever compile a top 25 list. How can I when we don't even have that many schools? Aram Tolegian did and we works out of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune office.

Nowhere did I say anything about La Habra's schedule going downhill prior to the St. John Bosco game - Aram Tolegian said.

That's all I'm saying.

As far as everything else you're saying, just chill out. There's no need to use profanity or get personal. This is high school football we're talking about. You do your school a disservice by using phrases such as "dumb @%$" and "brown nosing" and "stupid comments" and "dumb commentary." Why is there a need to speak like that? I haven't said anything vulgar in your direction, so why do you feel the need to be vulgar?

This is not the Salesian message of St. John Bosco.

I did it my way! said:

Coach Gil is a nice guy,I have enjoyed his approach to the game when he was at St.Paul, and every football parent I talk to from St.Paul always has kind words for him ,the kids stay in touch with him,he produced some fine players while at St.Paul.
Good Luck Coach!

I need to pay, or "play" close attention? Who's not paying attention? All I know is that earlier in the week there was an article in this rag ranking the top 25 "local" programs and the comment after LH's ranking was, "it's all downhill from here for the Highlanders." Your name and the other dude's you mentioned were listed as the writers/producers of the list. Man up and at least take responsibility for your dumb @%$ predictions and quotes. You guys brown nose LH and build them up like they are actually some great historic program. Yeah, they've done well over the last 10/11 years and those kids deserve credit, but you do them a disservice with all your brown nosing and dumb predictions. How dare you make such stupid comments. In a video you stated that LH had a tougher non-league schdule than Bosco siting teams like Servite and OLu - well I hate to tell you pal, but we play those teams every year in league (an example of your dumb commentary). And by the way, Loyola and Mission Hills would spank LH - LH could not stop Brown and the Mission Hills QB would run all over them too).

Always gets a beat down??? Warren went 10-2 last year and were back to back league champs they also had the leading rusher in california...callier might be gone but with weapons like magee bettancourt and the whole offensive line returning theres no way they should be this bad they went from 719 in the nation to 5716 under jimenez

Its funny all 4 of those pics for St Paul are from Pico Rivera kids.... Wheres all the SP people saying you dont need the Pico Rivera kids???

Andrew J. Campa said:

Trinity Football,

You need to play close attention to the video introductions. If you have, you'd realize that I never said what you quote me to say. That was Aram Tolegian.

Rip me if you want but at least be accurate.

TrinityFootball said:

Campa, you are not too smart. NOW la habra's schedule "is all down hill." Don't ever over look the Braves again - and you get paid for this stuff?

Love of the game said:

Small mistake in the St. Paul write up; St. Paul had 4 interceptions not 3 - G.Gonzalez had 2, A.J. Gonzalez (brother) had 1 returned for a touchdown and A. Llamas had an interception in the 1st half. They looked good.

Danny said:

Senior running back Martin Brown rushed for 304 yards and two touchdowns against La Habra. Wow!!

Gil Jimenez Morals?

I will agree with one thing, He does know football. If he wasn't so emotional and kept his poise he could be a great head coach. I saw him over the years at SP and he did a fine job. He just didn't know how to act like a coach. He acted like a brat. His bad attitude will rub off on the players. His coaching staff is nothing more then a Pop Warner staff. Another group of whinners and complainers. Stick to Grant Rea park.....

Football Fan said:

Gil has the best morals, HA!!! I have coached with and against him a few times and to me he looks like a fool yelling and cussing at his players. Always looking for excuses. Plus he favors way to many kids. If its not winning or loosing and how you play the game, It looks to me that he's definitly not playing the game right. I agree with the Warren fan, stick to basketball. Or stick to being just a DC and not a Head coach.

Anonymous said:

Are you kidding me. Warren always gets a beat down from everyone. Coach Gil is making us have hope for the future. Best Coach of all time. Great with the kids. Its not on winning or losing, it how you play the game. Coach Gil has the best morals and we love him for that. If you have something against him because he didn't play your kid, then your kid doesn't have talent and shouldn't be on the field.

Warren Fan said:

Wow, can't remember the last time Warren was beaten like this...Coach Gil, I truly feel sorry for you...basketball is your calling!
