While the area didn't produce a draft pick in Thursday's NFL Draft, here are a few players to keep to eye on in today's second day (second & third round) and Saturday's (fourth-seventh round). There are (4) former stars who may be drafted and they've been listed in order or their chances of getting drafted, at least according to a couple of scouting services.
For those following the progress of the St. Paul High School tournament, here's the info on today's final day of games.
Locally:
Cantwell Sacred Heart versus Mary Star at Baldwin Park, 9:30 a.m. for third place in the AA Bracket.
Crespi at La Mirada, 12:30 p.m., for fifth place in the AAA Bracket.
St. Francis at St. Paul, 9:30 a.m., for seventh place in the AAA Bracket.
Championship Games:
Bishop Montgomery vs. Norwalk at John Glenn at 3:30 p.m. in the AA Bracket championship.
Simi Valley vs. St. Bonaventure at St. Paul at 3:30 p.m. in the AAA Bracket championship.
After 37 years of coaching, California High School girls basketball coach Leonard Espinosa is retiring. The coach recently announced he will not be returning next season. Espinosa coached California for 16 seasons, reaching the playoffs in 11 of 16 campaigns.
Cantwell Sacred Heart coach Greg Gilmore didn't endure quiet a tenure. The Cardinals coach was fired last Monday after four seasons that produced a 39-73 record (.348 winning percentage) with two playoffs appearances.
Here is the paper's story - NOTES: California's Espinosa decides it's time to step aside

While the paper picked Santa Fe to win the Del Rio League crown this year, the Whittier Cardinals weren't on our radar.
And yet, both teams do battle today at 3:15 p.m. at Whittier for the right to be in sole possession of first place in the league standings at the 1/3 point of the season.
